by Gina Conkle

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Rough-around-the-edges Cyrus Ryland rose from humble origins to become England’s wealthiest citizen and most eligible bachelor. Called the King of Commerce, he thinks nothing of marriage until he hosts a masked ball and discovers an alluring woman hiding in his study. After one dance the lady vanishes, leaving behind a single shoe. The hunt is on, but finding her is only half the battle.
Claire Mayhew wants her hard won independence…a mid-town shop of her own. She resists the scorching attraction with Mr. Ryland — her new landlord, but Cyrus isn’t a man who gives up easily.
She peeked up at him around his arm, her pretty face impertinent among all that untamed hair. Her tone and bearing matched the prim coffee shop proprietress, but the view was pure brazen tavern maid at the end of her day.
His arms flexed. So, the East Ender gave him up. He wanted to thrash the lad for doing something so foolhardy as bringing Claire here. Too many bad things happened to women in this ward, even those who lived here and knew their way around.
Claire placed a hand high on his arm while her flimsy linen cleaned him. She made small, soft sweeps low, where his spine met his breeches. Her skirts brushed the backs of his exposed calves, something more intimate than their first dance. A wicked need to tease her struck, lightening his mood.
“I have a better idea for getting my back clean. It involves a copper tub, large enough for two.”
The swiping slowed. Her hand on his arm lifted, and the loss left his skin cool.
Perhaps he went too far.
Then her palm rested on his ribs, settling there with discovery. The heat of each curious finger splayed provocatively on his flesh in a lover’s exploratory touch. A heady rush followed, sending a pleasant burn over his already-hot torso.
“Whatever your plans in that copper tub of yours, I’m sure it’s not safe for a woman like me.” She said softly against his shoulder blade. “Though I’m sure you have some creative ideas.”
Cyrus looked over his shoulder, her blond head close to his back. “Careful, Miss Mayhew, or you’ll admit out loud you want more to happen between us.”
Lemongrass Hope by Amy Impellizzeri (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) GFT
It is my pleasure to share a guest post from author Amy Impellizzeri, who tells us...
BLOG TOPIC: YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST TIME
By Amy Impellizzeri
You never forget your first time.
I had submitted my first ever submission to an Editor about 3 or 4 weeks earlier.
An essay to Brain, Child Magazine - one of my favorites. And I had already practiced telling my success story: “Yes! It’s going to be published by the magazine coined ‘The New Yorker for mothers.’ Isn’t that great news?”
So I’ll never forget sitting in front of my computer staring at the newest inbox entry from the Brain, Child Editor reading my first ever form rejection letter:
We enjoyed reading your piece!
Relatable topic!
Thanks for submitting!
But oh yeah – “However, we receive many more submissions than we are able to publish and as such we've decided to give it a pass.”
A PASS? What the –
I stared at her words for many, many minutes - that’s a long time to read one sentence over and over again - until I grasped the meaning: No New Yorker for mothers for me.
That was over five years ago, and I have since learned, of course, that submissions are rejected for a host of reasons, including: timing, the wrong fit for a magazine’s current needs, editor indigestion, or – as was the case for my first-ever editorial submission –
It just  might not be good enough.
After that first rejection, I clicked back and looked again at my carefully written and lovingly submitted essay, and I saw for the first time what the Editor must have seen. Indulgence. Clichés. Boring writing. Familiar phrases.
I had taken a sabbatical from my successful corporate law career and was ready to embark on a new chapter as a professional writer, zealously jumping in headfirst with all of the confidence and self-assuredness that 13 years of successfully practicing law had ingrained in me. And with one email – one form rejection letter - all that confidence and self-assuredness with which I had embarked on my professional writing career went right out the window.
But don’t worry, that was a GOOD thing.
This was a brand new world I was entering. And it would not be enough that I had been good at being a lawyer. I would now have to be good at being a creative and commercial writer. A new journey. A new world. Arguably, the skills  that had served me well previously (over-thinking from every angle, carefully researched words, objective thought, consistent phrasing) would be hindrances in this new world.  It was time I realized that. It was time someone told me so.
Thank you Brain, Child Magazine editor.
I set out to polishing some new essays – never publishing – indeed never even submitting again – that first submitted essay. It was never really going to be good enough.
No matter, though.
Other pieces were.
I published in The Huffington Post, Skirt! Magazine, The Glass Hammer, to name a few. And then in 2013-2014, two different publishers agreed to put two of my books in print. Lawyer Interrupted was accepted for publication by the American Bar Association’s publishing arm, and Lemongrass Hope was published by award-winning indie press, Wyatt MacKenzie. It went on to win the Bronze award in the INDIEFAB Book of the Year Contest (Romance), and was named the #1 Reviewed book by book blogger The Literary Connoisseur, among other accolades.
And while the wonderful reception of Lemongrass Hope has been a great boon to my new career, the real inspiration as I move forward – continue to write, to revise, to submit - is still that first rejection (and truth be told, others that have followed it).
There’s no place for over-confidence and self-assuredness in the world of commercial writing. The drive to be better is a much more useful tool.  And while I would never be foolish enough to hope  that none of my submissions are ever rejected again, I do hope for a day when none of my submissions will ever be given a pass because they:
Just weren’t good enough.
Benton came and sat down next to Kate. Right next to her. Almost on top of her. Benton was tall and thin, and had long hair the color of Autumn. The right mix of red and brown with flecks of gold. She had friendly eyes and a bright white smile and was dressed all in navy like a banker, even though she looked like no banker Kate had ever met.
“See, I knew it.” Benton had said confidently, waving her long, manicured fingers over the textbooks and handwritten notes scattered across the park table, nearly knocking over Kate’s cup of coffee without apology.
“I told my friend last night that you were not a starving actress. That you were an academic. An intellectual. He said that you were too pretty to be an intellectual – that you were for sure, a ‘wannabe actress.’ His words, not mine, - so gauche no?”
Kate laughed in spite of herself. In spite also of having no clue what this gorgeous but obviously deranged creature was talking about.
***
Later, she would enjoy telling the story of how she met Benton in Bryant Park over and over again to Ian. He would say, “Wait, show me exactly how she sat down. And you had to actually push your chair back to shake her hand? And you couldn’t remember me? Not at all?”
Fake pout and then tender, long kiss.
Kate would always shake her head, of course, as incredulous as Ian was that she did not remember him as Benton’s dinner companion at Rocco’s that first night.
Especially since that is the night he had always said that he first fell in love with her.
My review:
3.75 stars
Anger's Children by K.D. Rose is a collection of three short stories, “Under the Shadow of Wings”, “Eyes Only”, and “The Dark Man”.  The first is a little disconcerting to me with its fluid treatment of time and changes in point of view, but it is an interesting twist on explaining why joining the mile high club can be fraught with danger.  The second provides a thought-provoking look at the challenges facing those who serve their country and the price and sacrifices that the service required.  There are interesting twists that tie the story together and I enjoyed the ending.  The last story has more of a paranormal flavor but bends space and time and gives a different look at the concept of geographic regions.
It is difficult to categorize these stories as belonging to a particular genre.  They give a sense of ‘what if’ and invite one to see the world from a slightly different tilt.  The brevity of the first and third stories keep one from getting a strong sense of the characters but there is a succinct poetry in some of the concepts presented that keeps one interested in the storyline, short though it is.  I think this story will appeal to those in search of a quick read that will stimulate the imagination.
The Convenient Wedding by Susie Warren (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) GFT
I am always delighted when authors are willing to share glimpses of their journey, and today I have the pleasure of a guest post from author Susie Warren as she answers:
What was the most difficult thing to overcome on your path to becoming a published author and how did you conquer it?
SW:  I think the most difficult obstacle for me to overcome was figuring out how to get all the working parts to move in a carefully orchestrated way to allow for a novel to be completed.  Here was my path:
Attending Conferences and Workshops
Writing can be a lonely profession and many writers are introverts. So I joined writing groups and went to conferences. I found many, many like-minded people who were happy to give advice and talk about writing. Learning about the craft and speaking with other writers helped to push me forward.
Carefully Using My Free Time
I’ve sacrificed most of my free time and quite a bit of sleep in the last five years to pursue a writing career. I have a full-time job as an administrator in a small school and three growing children who are now teenagers. I get up early to write each day and then spend longer stretches of time on weekends and holidays to push a story forward.
Staying Focused
When I started writing, there were often gaps in the time I could dedicate to writing.  In these intervals, new story ideas would surface and I would start a new project if I had a few hours. I would have three or four stories going at the same time. Ultimately, this approach didn’t work for me and nothing got completed. Out of sheer necessity, I became more disciplined. I started writing an hour each day and wouldn’t allow myself to switch projects. If a new idea surfaced, I would write it down in an idea folder and go back to my current project.
Deciding Not to Allow Tangents to Rule
I also realized that I would often completely change a central element of the story and then spend weeks revising the entire novel. This would happen four or five times. I decided not to allow myself to change something important just because the idea presented itself. It would have to greatly improve the story or I would make note of it for a new story.  Something interesting happened. I became more focused and productive. And I started completing projects.
Taking a Leap of Faith
In my writing career, I think my best accomplishment has been to take the leap into indie publishing. I have a good friend who I met years ago at a writing conference, Christina Tetreault, who is a successful author and has offered advice and encouragement at each juncture. There is so much to know in self-publishing, you have to do so much more than just write. At times, it can be overwhelming but if you are able to push through then it can be enormously satisfying at the end of the day.
Remembering Why I Write
I write for the playfulness and sheer joy of escaping into a different world. As a writer, you have ultimate control and can let your imagination run wild. But I have learned over time how to harness this energy so I can use it to stay focused and complete a novel.
Even though she had seen many images and video clips of him, Anderson was more impressive in the flesh. His intense presence drew her closer to him, and the rest of the party faded from view. His confidence was not surprising, but his relaxed charm was and it put her at ease.
She nodded. “Lucia Montgomery.”
He met her gaze. “My campaign manager seemed to think you go by Bella.”
Lucia gasped and shook her head. “Bella was a childhood nickname. It’s Lucia these days.”
“Bella suits you.”
“I was hoping I would have an opportunity to speak with you.”
He raised his eyebrows slightly, and she cringed at her forwardness. He didn’t need more adoration. She fiddled with the slim rope belt on her gown and smoothed the fabric down, trying to remember what she wanted to say to him.
His penetrating gaze sent a slow blush over her skin. “Do you have advice for me? It seems everyone in this room has an opinion on how I could win this race.”
Her mind went blank. “I don’t know if winning is possible.”
He looked at her intently. “Would you care to dance?”
Lucia straightened her spine. Why had she said that? Was it because she didn’t want to fall into the category of people wanting something from him? Or had his nearness elicited the truth from her?
He led her to the dance floor and she could feel his hand resting lightly on her lower back. The band was playing a love song and she realized she hadn’t even attempted her pitch for Isabel. She didn’t want to date Anderson Adams. She wanted to spark his curiosity in creating a documentary and tactfully mention her cousin. She had also wanted to appease her grandfather by being seen speaking with the candidate. But she had no intention of seeking a position in his campaign.
He gathered her into his embrace and she could feel her body respond to him. The evening was not going according to plan. She could barely string two words together and now she was dancing with him.
Her body stiffened and he said, “Relax. We can talk about the campaign later.”
She looked up into his eyes. “How did you know I wanted to talk about the campaign?”
He drew her slightly closer as they continued to dance. “There are very few secrets in politics. My campaign manager informed me that your grandfather mentioned that you are seeking a public relations position.”
She shook her head. “No, I’m not interested in working on your campaign, but I have an interesting idea for you.”
“Do you?” His face showed no expression.
She decided to go ahead and pitch her idea. “My cousin is an enormously talented filmmaker and I wondered if you had given any thought to recording your run for congress? Images of you campaigning could be used as a powerful marketing tool if done well.”
He smiled at her. “I agree. Maybe we could get together and discuss it further?”
Lucia nodded and allowed herself to let down her guard slightly and enjoy the dance. Anderson was agile and impressed her with his ability to dance. She stopped worrying about the intimacy of their embrace and let him lead her through a series of intricate moves.
After a second dance and then a third, she was slightly breathless and laughing at her inability to keep up with him. When the song ended, he said to her, “Let’s get a drink.”
She followed him to the bar and he ordered two glasses of Perrier with lime. Lucia cautioned herself not to be too taken with him. He was an expert at luring people in and impressing them. It didn’t hurt that he was a marvelous dancer.
He lifted his glass to her and said, “May that be the first of many dances.”
Trending
Trending is when thousands of people across a state, country, countries, or continents, (depending on your settings) all decide to tweet about the same topic. This usually involves hashtags, a topic listed under “Trending,” and many, many people looking for their moment in the spotlight. Generally, trends are about something happening on social media, the news, movies, music, or taking place in the world at the moment. New releases, and celebrities often dominate. Celebrity deaths and death hoaxes also make their appearance. For example, as I write, #royalbaby is trending because that news was just announced and 3— not 1, not 2, but 3 trending subjects are about 1Direction. There is also a #HappyBDayCamCam trending about someone named Cameron Dallas who has 3.4 Million Twitter followers, and I don’t know who he is because, well, I’m old.
Not that these aren’t THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS EVER, but occasionally, just occasionally something will trend that is interesting to writers, or nerds, or writer-nerds like me. Sometimes these are more local trending subjects, but occasionally even God arises and says- “I am TIRED of Chris Brown, and Margaret Atwood is not tweeting today— Let the Higgs-Boson Particle be found!” Then suddenly science nerds and writer nerds and wordplay nerds form a bond. Higgs-Boson trends, writers have a field day, scientists nash their teeth at all the incorrect explanations going around, thunder claps, rivers overflow, and for a brief moment, even science makes twitter news.
Higgs-Boson Tweets:
•Higgs Boson- “The Force is strong with that one.”#laymangeekbutIcanthelpit
•Ok Kids: Higgs, Top Quark, Ultra High Energy Ray, TOE. In that order. I’ll be waiting for a report at dinner. Higgs Boson
•Wow- articles are now out saying US sees stronger hints of Higgs. Way to grab the spotlight for a dead collider. CERN is EU. Higgs Boson
•True- the US found hints of Higgs Boson too, but wasnt up to more so it was kind of expected from CERN. Atom Smasher suffers collider envy.
•They might have found Higgs Boson. They might have not. Schrodinger is happy.
•Oh my- Higgs is now trending without Boson. Seriously!
•People who can make Higgs Boson jokes return my faith in humanity.
•Higgs Boson? How quaint. Where’s the (S)top Quark? What- did I just suck all the air out of CERN? Oh no wait that’s another experiment.
•Higgs Boson Why Science Works: There is no religion around supersymmetry.
My Review:
4 out of 5 stars
The Brevity of Twit:  Poetry and More in 140 Characters” by K.D. Rose is an intriguing collection of observations and poems using the framework of Twitter specifications.  This is not a medium that I am very familiar with but I was fascinated by both the pithy observations that can be presented concisely and the methods of bypassing the limitations of only 140 characters using a technique called a ‘Tweet series’.
I have found a few new favorite aphorisms, such as “At the table of intellect, some are missing a few portions…” or “The best books change every time you read them.” and, especially, “Charisma is usually mistaken for enlightenment, intelligence and expertise.  Hence, the state of the world.”  and I was entertained by the hashtags for certain ‘Trends’.  This is a fun, quick read that will appeal to those who enjoy witty collections, whether one is familiar with this form of social media or not.
