It is my pleasure to have a guest post by author Judy Teel, as she shares...

7 Things About Urban Fantasy That Readers Want Writers to Know

Judy Teel

I’m a writer, but I’m also a reader and I love Urban Fantasy. Here are seven things I’d tell future writers if I could. What would you say?

1. I like action and lots of it. Don’t bore me with pages of angst-ridden thinking. Pepper it into the action and dialogue.

The strange Weres’ scent caught my attention again, and I ducked farther back into the leafy cover, tightening my grip on the branch above me. I wasn’t sure who or what I was going to see coming down the trail, but I doubted it would be friendly.

There were plenty of both kinds of paranormals in the world now; those who saw humans as food or at best slaves, and those who wanted an inclusive society and lived under the new laws. It was the last kind that had swung the war our way, coming out of hiding to help what was left of the human population beat back the bad guys….

2. I like my heroines and heroes to say and do the things I’d be too chicken to. Give them witty comebacks and snappy back-and-forths with other characters.

I pulled in a deep breath to calm the butterflies in my stomach. “Hey!” I called across the ring to Deg. “Are you ready to apologize for being a rude moron so that I can get to my dinner?”

Deg stared at me, appalled, and then his brow lowered. He stepped into the ring. “Are you anxious to die?”

“I hope your fighting style is more interesting than your banter.” I smiled and his scowled deepened.

3. I want to see new places and experience new adventures without actually endangering my life. Give me smells, give me touch, give me emotion – I want to live outside my box for a few hours.

As we approached, the wind swept down from the cliff and rushed over us, sending a chill of apprehension across my skin. At least twelve times the height of the tallest building I’d ever seen in the city, the Bone Clan stronghold was beautiful, inspiring and terrifying all at the same time.

4. I want to care about my new friends and know that they (and me living as them) will triumph in the end, or at least in the right now. I want to feel that sense of victory.

Using her half-second of surprise, I slammed my forehead into the socket of the vulnerable shoulder. The joint dislocated with a muffled pop.

She gave a startled yelp and her grip on my wrist gave out, gifting me with another second to drop my knife and bear down with both hands on her gun. I broke her hold on the weapon and tore it from her fingers.

Grabbing my knife, I leaped off of her and aimed her Glock at her head. “Who are you?”

5. I love to be kept in suspense!

Turning left and then right, Cooper pulled in several long breaths, testing the air. “Something's wrong."

As soon as he said it, a shiver swept up my back and my stomach knotted. That was the only warning I got.

6. I like to laugh too. Let your characters say funny things and do stupid stuff that sometimes backfires in hilarious ways.

The guards’ beady Were eyes landed on me and then slid off to lock onto a point beyond my shoulder. The irritation in their expressions compressed into anger. “He had nothing to do with this,” I said, keeping myself between them and Noah. “Ryker sent for me.”

Both guards raised their brows at the same time and then the closest one pulled in a breath. “She’s lying,” he said with satisfaction.

Damn Were noses. “Or I’m nervous because you’re, you know, so intimidating to a wee human and all.” They gave me matching scowls and I wondered if Weres could be cloned. Also if I were about to die.

7. If you can do all this for me, I will love you forever and buy everything you write! (Probably forever.)

EXCERPT

Directly across from us, the gates of Hell rose up — the doorway to Cooper’s hometown, so to speak.

Thirty-foot high stone walls stretched to the right and left until they curved out of sight. Standing between were the gates, made entirely of bones. Thick bones of varying prehistoric-level sizes that looked like they’d come from animals that had died out thousands of years ago, if they had ever existed outside of a fantasy book.

Two nasty looking Weres stood on guard duty, a female who looked like she ate scrap metal and pooped nails, and a bald guy who was built like a professional wrestler, or maybe a bull. His shaved head was covered with tribal tattoos that ran down his neck and over his arms to his wrists and he glowered at me as he stepped aside to let us pass.

Huge and sweeping, the Bone Clan fortress looked like it was designed to withstand a lifetime of sieges without batting an eye. And it was nothing compared to the sheer face of the mountain at its back and the three tiers carved into it.

“Welcome to Cha’dana.” Bald Guy shoved me in the middle of the back, forcing me to stumble forward. “Keep moving.”

The wind swept down from the cliff and rushed over us, sending a chill of apprehension across my skin. At least twelve times the height of the tallest building I’d ever seen in the city, the stronghold was beautiful, inspiring and terrifying all at the same time.

So much for finding safe haven with Cooper’s Clan.
