Frozen Wild: How Animals Survive in the Coldest Places on Earth by Jim Arnosky (review)

5 out of 5 stars

Frozen Wild: How Animals Survive in the Coldest Places on Earth (Slither and Crawl) by Jim Arnosky is an exquisitely detailed, slightly oversized children’s book that conveys the breadth of life that not only survives but thrives in what some would consider a harsh environment.  The beautifully realistic artwork depicts a gamut of creatures that live in and on land and water and the descriptions vividly conjure up the impressive quality of various creatures’ adaptation to a cold environment.  There are beautiful foldout pages that allow one to compare the sizes of some of the animals described and drawings that depict some of the concepts described such as seasonal pelage or development of a winter coat.  I love that this book evokes both admiration and appreciation for nature even as it points out the impact of the changing climate for a delicately balanced ecosystem.  I think this is a book which is a feast for the eyes that will engender an appreciation for the remarkable adaptation that creatures have evolved to deal with the changing seasons and hopefully stimulate a desire to help conserve the multitude of creatures who are interconnected with us on this planet we call home.
