BLURB:

Kandi Cain inherited her Dr. Doolittle abilities from her grandmother and became a psychic pet detective. To her dismay, she just acquired the power to communicate with the spirit world, but dead people give her the willies.

Just when Kandi thought her life couldn’t get more complicated, the neighbor from hell moved in next door. The nasty guy’s name is Dutch Callaghan. How can someone so gorgeous be such a dick? Kandi could chalk some of it up to his job. Dutch is a Phoenix PD homicide cop.

Kandi’s current case is rescuing a Yorkie from a brutal dog fighting ring. Little does she know her dog napping suspect is involved in a series of brutal murders. Disguised as an elderly nun, Kandi rescues the Yorkie and, in the process, blows the hell out of Dutch’s undercover operation.

Kandi now finds herself a person of interest in her client’s murder and her sexy-as-hell, pain-in-the-butt neighbor is in hot pursuit of the Ninja Nun. Is Dutch about to slap the cuffs on? Only time will tell.

EXCERPT

Bang! Bang! Bang! My front door shuddered under the blows. “Shut those fucking roosters up,” Dutch bellowed.

If I stopped them, he’d know for sure I could control critters, but would anyone believe him?

The roosters’ crowing got louder and louder.

My headache got worse and worse. I only had four glasses of champagne and I shouldn’t be this hung over.

Dutch shouted, “Shut them up or I’m going to write you a ticket for disturbing the peace.”

“Arrrgh!” I climbed out of bed, opened the bedroom window and leaned out. “Go ahead. It’ll get laughed out of court.” My eyes widened in surprise. Shadows wrapped around Dutch’s abdomen, but left his bare chest and legs exposed. I suddenly had the urge to run my hands all over those yummy muscles. Was he naked?  And if he was, how did I get him to move into the light?

I smacked my forehead. What in the hell was wrong with me? Why was I drooling over the asshole? I had seen a nude man before and his little pecker kinda reminded me of a one-eyed snake. “How about I call 9-1-1 and report a naked prowler.”

Dutch stepped into view. “I’m not naked.”

My girly parts danced in delight. Whoa, he was hung like a stallion. His jockey shorts displayed every inch of his impressive morning woody.

Dutch crossed his arms and smirked. “Like what you see?”

“I’ve seen bigger.”

“Really?” The bastard laughed and shook his head. “You’re lying.”

“Am not.” God, that sounded juvenile.

“I have it on good authority that you’re a virgin.”

“What?” It came out as a squawk of horror. “Who told you that?”

“Your mother.”

I was going to kill her.

More cock-a-doodle-doos rang out.

“Make them stop and I’ll drop the assault charge,” Dutch promised.

I snorted. “Right.”

“You have my word.”

I pulled my eyes off his crotch. “And why should I believe you?”

“I was a Boy Scout.”

Like I believed that, but the crowing was making my head throb. “Fine.” I reached out psychically. “Stop crowing.”

The chickens fell silent.

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea what a real emergency is. Take this for example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone I took up writing.

What Happens in Summer by Caridad Pineiro (Spotlight, guest post, and excerpt) PUYB

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author Caridad Pineiro, who shares...

I love the summer for so many reasons. The sun and warmth. The sexy surfers down along the beachfront. Best of all, getting to spend a few hours lazing on the sand beneath my umbrella or on my little balcony with a fabulous beach read. I actually get most of my reading down during the summer months and maybe that’s why I love the season best!

When I decided to write a contemporary romance series I had no doubt that the first stories in the At the Shore series would be set during the summer in the quaint and enchanting Jersey Shore town of Sea Kiss!

I also knew that I wanted to explore a moment in women’s lives when a sudden change comes about. In the first book in the series, ONE SUMMER NIGHT, you meet Maggie, Connie and Emma, lifelong friends who are about to experience those changes.

In ONE SUMMER NIGHT, it’s an unexpected relationship between the heirs of two feuding families, Maggie Sinclair and Owen Pierce, that leads to life changes for all the friends. The ONE SUMMER NIGHT ebook is on sale if you’d like to check out that Romeo and Juliet story (but with a much happier ending).
(Note from ELF, please check price before purchasing)

My latest release in the At the Shore series, WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER, is a book of my heart because I fell in love with Connie and Jonathan and their second chance love story.

Jonathan left Sea Kiss after ending a teenaged fling with Connie, but Jon has never been able to forget his first love. Now he's back in town to show her the man he's become… but is she ready to see it? When Connie and Jon are reunited as adults, they both have something to prove, but neither are prepared for the consequences of their lasting mutual attraction.

It was a lot of fun to explore the changes in Connie and Jonathan and how they deal with their past issues in order to re-kindle their love and build a relationship together.
I hope you’ll take a moment to check out WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER and find out why I love this story so much!

WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER
by Caridad Pineiro

Contemporary Romance, 320 pp.
$7.99 (paperback) $4.99 (kindle)

The sizzling heat doesn’t always stay in summer. . .

Connie Reyes and Jonathan Pierce only discovered how different they were after a magical summer on the Jersey Shore. She was ambitious and practical; he was artistic and rebellious. Their parting was heartrending, and the intervening years have only made a reunion less and less possible.
Now, Jonathan is back in Sea Kiss, having made a fortune in tech. He has everything money can buy, but his bed is empty and his heart is hollow. He’s never stopped thinking about Connie, and he’ll do anything to show her the man he’s become. . .

Prologue
Sea Kiss, New Jersey
Playing it safe was far worse than taking a risk on what you wanted.
Jonathan Pierce knew just what he wanted.
He grabbed hold of the gnarly branch of the decades-old wisteria vine that climbed the side of the Sinclair mansion and boosted himself up. He’d made the journey so many times this past summer, he could do it blindfolded.
He scrambled up the vine, finding the familiar foot and handholds until he vaulted up and over the second floor railing, and landed silently as a cat burglar on the balcony. It ran the length of the immense oceanfront mansion, with elegant french doors offering views of the sea.
The first darkened doorway was Maggie Sinclair’s room. He rushed past it quietly; Maggie belonged to his older brother, Owen. Not that Owen had acted on it yet, but Jonathan had known for years that the two were meant to be together, family feud be damned.
The next doorway was usually Maggie’s dad’s, but the old man had stopped coming down to the Shore as often as he once had, so it was a good bet that room was unoccupied.
Reaching the third room, he saw the curtains wafting in the summer breeze and the dim light from behind the partially closed french doors. He smiled and his heart raced with pleasure.
Connie was waiting for him. Ever-responsible, ever-loyal Connie had broken her own rules to fall in love with him. Or at least he thought it was love. It definitely was on his part. With barely a week left before the girls all went back to school, he intended to let her know just how he felt.
He slipped carefully through the open doors and shut them behind him. He’d gone no more than a step when she launched herself at him, laughing and kissing him as she said, “What took you so long?”
“I missed you, too,” he said, knowing it was more about the separation to come in a week and not about the long hours since last night.
He bent his head and kissed her, his touch tender and caring, and she answered in kind, her lips soft and coaxing.
Although Maggie had been bringing her friends to the Jersey Shore every summer since they’d met freshman year in college, he’d never really paid much attention to Connie at first. He’d had his share of girls from his high school class fawning over him.
But when Maggie and her friends had come back the next year, he had finally, gratefully, noticed what a real woman should be. Like Connie: all luscious curves; also proud, smart, and independent,
As impatient as he might be to make love to her tonight, he wanted her to know how much this meant to him. How this wasn’t only a summer romance for him.
He leaned over her, his gaze locked on her face. He wanted to say the words—Lord, how he wanted to—but they stuck in his throat and so he let every kiss and touch tell her what he couldn’t voice.

Excerpt:

Guy released a breath as he let his whip fly. It struck his old friend, Ruliff, or Rule, as he preferred to be called. Rule stood, his hands suspended from manacles dangling from chains overhead.

Even if Rule screamed, no one would hear him, deep in the cellar of this mansion owned by their vampiric kin, Ansley and Brayden. Rule wouldn't scream, though. It wasn't in his nature to show what he believed to be weakness. To drag more than a groan from Rule, Guy would be forced to practically kill him and his sessions weren't meant to cause permanent damage. They had already been at it for longer than usual, even for someone with a supernatural constitution.

Five more times Guy struck him with strategically placed blows before he paused and approached Rule. Using the handle of his whip, he traced an especially fierce-looking welt on Rule's sweat-slicked back. Rule had a tremendous capacity for pain. Always had.

Guy recalled the days when they, along with Brayden, Ansley and the fifth member of their "family," Bryce, had sailed with Tarun, a genuine monster. The five men had shared a strange and violent past, one that could have destroyed them, but together they had overcome it. Still their days at sea with the vampire pirate -- the master who had tried to mold them in his image -- had left scars on their souls as well as their bodies. These sessions with Rule reminded Guy of how strong yet vulnerable they all were, even if they refused to admit it.

Rule could be stubborn to the point of stupid.

Guy tightened his hand around the whip and struck Rule again with a blow that would have had most men screaming. A strangled groan escaped the tall, dark-haired man and Guy curled his lip in disgust.

He loved the whip and was an expert with it. Like his vampire kin, he had taken what he'd learned about pain and battle from their hated master and made it a form of expression. They had ultimately used their skills to fight back, not only for themselves but for victims who crossed their path. Each of the five men had mastered certain weapons. Guy's obsession was the lash. From bullwhips to floggers, all were slaves to him, bringing pleasure or pain as he saw fit. His love of leather had melded into every part of his life, including sex. He used his floggers to pleasure and punish, sometimes separately, sometimes both at once.

Long ago, Guy had honed his skills on his willing brothers, except for Bryce, who refused to submit to anyone, even for fun. Only Rule to this day came to Guy for regular sessions. Guy decided this one had gone on long enough. He knew Rule would push himself past his limits. He needed a strong but sensitive Dominant who knew when to stop.

Glancing at Rule, Guy noted that he seemed to be in a trance. His blue eyes were narrowed to slits, his lips parted and his breathing shallow. Wet black curls clung to his perspiring forehead and neck. Blood trickled from his lower lip where he'd pierced it with his fangs.

"Our session is over for today," Guy said without room for argument.

Rule ignored his authoritative tone and said in a deep, hoarse voice, "More."

"Your name might be Rule, but you don't rule here," Guy said.

"Fine. Release me then."

"Not until you calm down."

"I am calm."

"You forget how well I know you."

Rule's cool facade snapped. Bellowing, he yanked at his bonds.

Now he screams, Guy thought, but he knew it was probably a good thing. Rule wouldn't allow Guy to comfort him like some clients enjoyed after a session. Guy worked mainly with supernatural beings -- vampires, wizards, and even an occasional werewolf paid well for him to tease and torment them with his leather and chains. But even those creatures had a tender side. Rule's was buried deep and Guy hoped that eventually someone would reach it.

Despite Rule's impressive strength, he couldn't break the chains. Guy's survival often depended on knowing how to properly bind supernatural beings.

Guy placed his whip next to a heavy purple flogger on a table covered in red plastic. He'd clean his tools later. He was about to clean Rule's back when his cell phone rang.

He knew who it was by the ringtone.

He picked up the phone and said, "What's up?"

"It's Bryce. I need your help. It's business."

Although the five men had different careers in the human world, their true purpose was to protect those in need. The weapons they had once used as criminals were now their means of redemption.

Bryce worked as a police officer in the city. Sometimes he called upon his brothers to help him resolve crimes in which the human world could offer no justice.

"What does he want?" Rule asked, having ceased his rampage when the phone rang. "Is there a case for us? Let me go!"

"Do you have Rule strung up in the dungeon again?" Bryce asked.

"Yes. I'm putting you on speakerphone."

"You don't have to. I can hear him quite well," Rule said, straining to look at Guy over his shoulder.

Though keen senses were an advantage of vampirism, the speakerphone would make a three-way conversation easier.

"I've been working on what we believe are serial killings," Bryce said. "You've probably heard about them. The media calls them the Bodybuilder Murders. We've found a common denominator and, Guy, I believe you can get the evidence I need. Will you help?"

"You have to ask?" Guy said.

"Can you use me?" Rule asked.

"Right now this is a one-man job," Bryce said. "But thanks."

Rule looked a bit disappointed, but with all the trouble in the world, he was sure to have another case to work on soon.

"Guy, can you meet me in an hour?" Bryce asked.

"Absolutely. Where?"

"Stay put. I'll come to you."

One of the authors I follow (M. Crane Hana) put the following plea out for assistance in helping her transport a disabled veteran to dialysis appointments. The link for information is here. The link for the GoFundMe account is here. If you are so moved, please help spread the word on your social media. Thank you!

While I am discussing non-book subjects, one of the reasons my life has been more chaotic than usual is that I have been dealing with multiple deaths over the past 6 months...not the best way to spend Christmas and subsequent months. The ONLY reason I mention this is that THREE of those deaths were due to cancer. PLEASE make sure you are getting regular exams, as two victims were older women who had breast cancer.

Excerpt:

“Please, try your best, then when you are ready, come to the pavilion and find me. This discussion is not over. I need you to do this first, okay?” She stood up, nodded humbly, and started walking down the hill.

“Don’t forget, drop it like a sack of potatoes, and focus on your breathing!” she called back politely.

She wanted me to grasp the moment, and to focus on cultivating the art of a controlled mind, to increase wisdom and mental awareness. In return, that should give me the ability to focus on my childhood years with controlled thoughts that would no longer affect my emotions, if I learnt to have empathy and to forgive.

“Oh God, how on earth am I going to forgive? Okay, let’s try,” I mumbled to myself.

“Drop it like a sack of potatoes, drop it like a sack of potatoes, sack of potatoes, potatoes. Oh my God, I feel like French fries.” Clearly, meditating about the sack of potatoes wasn’t helping. I tried again, closed my eyes and began to focus on my breathing. Then I took myself back to my childhood years to try to find a way to forgive all that had happened to me. I failed endlessly with that task; a minute of silence seemed like an hour. I kept getting distracted, thinking about French fries and what bills I’d forgotten to pay.

Dark Pleasures by Aja James (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

by Aja James
ADULT title

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   paranormal, fantasy romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Devlin Sinclair, the New England Dark Ones’ Hunter, is on a mission to track down the elusive and mysterious Medusa, perhaps the ultimate nemesis the Pure and Dark Ones have been battling in recent years.

But he can’t do it alone.

Grace Darling has isolated herself from the world since a very young age, after her parents’ death and because of her own social disability. Awkward and brilliant, a born sensualist, Grace agrees to a blind date that changes the course of Destiny.

She has the skills he needs. Their chemistry is off the charts, but will she, can she give him the love he craves?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
The taxi jolted to a stop and Grace got out without waiting for Devlin to disembark first and open the door for her.
He never understood this aspect of modern women, in particular American women. Were they so independent that they couldn’t appreciate gentlemanly behavior? Did they never think that some men simply enjoyed being a gentleman?
After some two hundred years, Devlin would always behave according to the principles and manners that had been ingrained in him since birth. Not because they were habits he couldn’t shake off but because they were part of who he was, part of the man he was.
Well, bloodsucker now.
He rapidly scoured his mind for ideas. How could he get this strange, Sphinx-like woman to invite him inside? Surely there was a—
“Come inside,” she intoned with nary a trace of emotional inflection. Not excitement, anticipation or nervousness.
But at least she saved him from thinking up an excuse to impose on her.
Devlin was about to thank her for her invitation when he met her eyes.
Her pupils had fully swallowed her irises. Her stare was so intense now that it actually gave him pause.
Just who was the hunter and who, the prey? Her unblinking black eyes reminded him of a cobra hypnotizing a field mouse.
He silently accepted her invitation anyway by following her down the steps of her basement apartment in a posh part of Soho, and then inside her abode once she unlocked and opened the door with efficiency.
He was well over ten times as strong as she and a trained killer besides. He was certainly not the prey in this scenario.
Just as efficiently, she locked the door the moment they were both within the entryway, working a series of four locks and deadbolts in addition to punching in the codes to a state-of-the-art security system. No one was getting into her fortress unless she voluntarily admitted them.
Devlin wondered if the same applied for getting out.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Aja has been writing stories since the age of six, and novels since the age of thirteen. While she'd be the first to admit that those early efforts weren't particularly good, she sure loved putting them down on paper!
The best part of writing, according to Aja, is that it’s completely organic, the way the stories develop. When the inspiration hits, she writes just so she herself can learn where the characters are headed because oftentimes, they take her by surprise! It is her ultimate dream to share her stories with as many readers as she possibly can.
Her other loves include art, cooking, old movies (anything with Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, and all the song and dance numbers because she can’t watch them and not be happy!)
She adores taking long walks with her husband and running after her two rambunctious kids. She has traveled extensively (all seven continents except Antarctica) and has a multi-cultural upbringing. She speaks two and a half languages and binge watch TV shows when the mood strikes.
My review:
4.5 out of 5 stars
Dark Pleasures by Aja James follows expert computer hacker Grace Darling who is being pursued by Devlin Sinclair as he searches for a way to take down the enemy Medusa and her minions. He’s astounded by the way this very different human reacts to him, seemingly unfazed by his revelations of a world she’d never dreamed of, but he doesn’t expect the way she’s able to turn his world upside down.
This dark adult paranormal romance is part of the ‘Pure/Dark Ones’ series. It features an almost overwhelming number of characters for someone who is new to the series the way I am, but they are so well-written, one is drawn into this complex world. There is a fair amount of violence so those who are squeamish should be forewarned.
I adore this heroine, with her straightforward approach to coping with her handicap, and her unconventional methods. The fact that she can seduce and wear out an ancient being and continually surprise him provides both humor and heat to the story and it was very entertaining to watch him cope with this enterprising and brilliant human he has spent so much time stalking.
Their intense sexual connection complicates his investigation into the inimical Medusa and Grace’s direct approach to every problem that she faces provides a unique twist on some of the standard tropes of vampire stories. I love her reaction to the discovery of new erogenous zones as well as her courage with Devlin’s colleagues.
There are multiple threads traveling through this story that are part of the series arc as well as secondary characters with their own vivid conflicts and issues and I think it would be much better to start from the beginning to understand the major conflict but this story can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty if one just focuses on the main couple.
This is a new-to-me author but I certainly will be looking for other stories by her.
A copy of this title was provided to me for review
