Tight Quarters by Annabeth Albert (spotlight and review) ANT ADULT title

Tight Quarters
(Out of Uniform series)
by
Annabeth Albert
ADULT title

 Blurb

 Petty Officer Bacon, a navy SEAL and ace sharpshooter, has been on the front lines of more than his fair share of dangerous ops. Yet when a minor injury relegates him to the beta team, he’s tasked with what may be his riskiest assignment yet: the silver fox journalist he’s babysitting is the hottest, most charismatic man he’s ever encountered.

Award-winning journalist Spencer Bryant may have been named one of Pride magazine’s most eligible bachelors of the year, but he’s not looking to change his relationship status. He’s a consummate professional who won’t risk his ethics or impeccable reputation by getting involved with a source. Even a sexy-as-hell military man. But while Spencer can resist his physical attraction to Bacon, he has less control over his emotions—especially when the mission goes sideways and the two men are trapped alone.

Getting out of the jungle alive turns out to be easy compared to facing the truth about their feelings for one another back in the real world. And whether or not they can build a future is a different story altogether.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

Excerpt:

Bacon liked running, liked anything that got his body moving. Being still and alone with his thoughts was harder on him than any twenty-mile trek. And generally, he liked company, was never the sort to turn down being around people. But, he was trying hard not to like being around Bryant—getting too comfortable with the journalist seemed like a recipe for disaster. Who knew what would make it into his articles? And fuck this being on Team Bravo nonsense. Why the hell did he have to hang back on their next mission and babysit the reporter? He was still not over the LT assigning him this duty, and it didn’t matter how good a runner Spencer Bryant was, Bacon’s mood wasn’t improving.

My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Tight Quarters by Annabeth Albert is part of the ‘Out of Uniform’ series and features Spencer Bryant, a well-known journalist who is embedded briefly with a SEAL team during a dicey mission. He is being shepherded through the experience by a reluctant Petty Officer Bacon, who resents being sidelined to the secondary squad instead of functioning as the elite sniper his team needs. Bacon has his own demons to deal with, including his discomfort with the apparent homophobic attitudes of those who should be his brothers, his fellow team members. A mutual attraction between the two men strains the lines of propriety and ethics but it may not be strong enough for them to form a lasting relationship.

This adult m/m military romance has a couple of characters that really appealed to me because of their combination of strength and vulnerability. I ached at the history that has made them into the men they are and cheered at the way they lived their lives unapologetically. I think the author did a great job at creating realistic and charismatic characters and the story showed the challenges of dealing with people’s preconceptions, especially in a group that depends on its brotherhood and unstinting support. I was disappointed by the choice that Spencer made even as I understood his reasoning and motivation and I cheered that Bacon was able to call him out and display his own pain at the decision. I was drawn into the story immediately and had no trouble reading it as a stand-alone even though I want to read the tales that came before this one in the series. I look forward to reading more stories set in this environment.

Dr. Llewellyn Lewis leads a double life, as both an awkward but distinguished history professor and the more flamboyant Ramon Rondell, infamous writer of sensational historical theories. It also means a chance for Llewellyn to get to know Blaise much better.

Not everyone thinks Llewellyn should take the case-or the money. Between feuding siblings, rival patrons, jealous colleagues, and greedy administrators, almost anyone could be trying to thwart his work... and one of them is willing to kill to do it.

Under the Radar by Dee J. Adams (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) ADULT title GFT

by Dee J. Adams
ADULT title
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Two brothers. Two best friends. One robbery gone wrong.

With a court date looming, a near-fatal car accident, and a house invasion, the four surviving witnesses to an armed robbery know they are targets. In a desperate attempt to stay safe, they take matters into their own hands and go off the grid a week before the trial.

Danny St. John was stuck in a dark place of guilt and regret after a personal tragedy. On the run from violent criminals, he is forced to spend time with the one woman who makes him feel too much. Victoria Lopez needs to protect her heart, but she also misses the guy Danny used to be and thinks she might be able to bring him back. Now, evading gunmen together in Sequoia National Forest, Vic will risk everything to keep Danny safe.

Eric St. John isn’t a big fan of his sister-in-law-to-be, Zoe Turner. Sure, she’s beautiful, but also bossy and brash. When Eric and Zoe are forced to rely on each other for survival, he sees a side to Zoe he never anticipated, a side he definitely likes. But as the two grow closer, so do the men hunting them down.

Time nearly runs out as each couple must not only brave the perils of the wilderness and their growing feelings for each other, but also outwit their pursuers in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Something moved in the bushes just outside the window in the corner of the room. Zoe’s pulse leapt as she sat up in bed.
“Did you hear that?” Vic whispered almost soundlessly.
“I thought you were sleeping.” Zoe’s voice wasn’t much louder.
“Tried. Not successful.”
They heard the tiniest scrape on the glass and both of them bolted out of bed. “Stuff the pillow under the blankets,” Zoe ordered softly. “Shoes,” she said next as she grabbed her flats. Before they could leave the room, an explosion of sound came from the front of the house and Zoe swung Vic into the closet, followed her in, and shut the door as the window in their room blasted apart. Seconds later, heavy footsteps crunched over broken glass.
Fear and nausea erupted in Zoe’s gut like a geyser. Grunts and thuds coming from the hallway marked the sounds of a fight and she held her breath, waiting for someone to pull open the door. She’d pulled Vic into a death trap by jamming them into this closet.
Bullets erupted outside the door and Zoe slapped a hand over her mouth to hold back a scream. The noise stopped and long tense seconds passed as Zoe and Vic stared at each other, the whites of Vic’s eyes clear in the dark. Before Zoe knew what happened, Vic slammed the door open and pounced on the man in front of them, putting him in a chokehold while hanging onto his back. It was the same thing Casey had done when she’d fought off her ex last year. The gun bounced on the floor and Zoe scrambled to reach it, her hands shaking and breath billowing in and out of her lungs.
My review:
4 out of 5 stars
Under the Radar by Dee J. Adams is Book 4 of the ‘High Stakes’ series. A shopping trip to prepare for the engagement party of the couple all four are devoted to plunges brothers Eric and Danny St. John plus Zoe Turner and Victoria (Vic) Lopez into forced proximity. A flight and fight for their lives forces them to reconsider how much they truly irk each other but they may not survive long enough to explore their new attitudes.
This contemporary romantic suspense tale is exciting and action-packed. Surprisingly, I was not completely lost, even though this is ostensibly the final volume in this series, although I daresay it would be easier to understand some of the nuances if I had read the previous stories. Those who are squeamish should be forewarned that there is plenty of violence surrounding this quartet. Given the events that take place as well as the references to past occurrences, one has to assume that it is extremely dangerous becoming involved with the St. John family and collateral damage is very likely. The setting is vividly described and ALMOST makes me want to try camping, although I’m pretty attached to my creature comforts, lol.
I was a little overwhelmed by the issues plaguing three of the quartet—both professionally and personally—and I have to wonder whether the epiphanies that are elicited by the intense experiences they undergo could be longlasting, despite the epilogue. I think the challenge of showing two different relationships developing kept either from being sufficiently delved into, hence my skepticism. Despite that, I am curious about the rest of this series as well as the crossover book that connects to another group of stories and I will be looking for more of this author’s exciting tales that blend a beautiful setting with dangerous events.
by Seelie Kay
ADULT title
About The President’s Wife:  What happens when one of your best friends, the First Lady of the newly democratic Republic of Lodatia, appears to be an imposter? If you’re criminal defense attorney Julianna Constant, you pursue the truth like a rabid dog, then wage a battle to save your friend’s life. When criminal defense attorney Julianna Constant travels to Washington, D.C. to join her former college roommate, Marella de la Aerelli, in celebrating her husband’s election as the first president of the newly democratic Republic of Lodatia, she is met with an unpleasant surprise. Her friend of almost 30 years not only looks unwell, she is cold and distant. After Julianna becomes convinced the woman is really an imposter, she attempts to expose the faux Marella by using a secret only she, Marella, and the sitting U.S. President share. In the process, Julianna helps to uncover an international conspiracy to seize control of the new country, using the president’s wife as a pawn in a dangerous and potentially deadly game. Will Marella be rescued before a coup takes place? Or will she become collateral damage in one tiny nation’s fight to be free?
Excerpt:
The state dinner at the White House was in full swing. Waiters were busy delivering food and pouring wine, as guests ate and chatted with others seated at their tables.
Julianna picked at her dinner, some sort of beef dish with quirky vegetables, and continued to study Lodatian President Georges and Mrs. Marella de la Aerelli, as they chatted quietly with the U.S. president and his wife. Marella barely looked up from her plate, and conversation with her hosts appeared to be minimal. God, that is so not the Marella I know. She hasn’t even acknowledged me and I sent her an email informing her that I would be here.
Julianna set her fork down on her plate and nudged her husband, Little River, Wisconsin Police Chief David Manders. “Something’s wrong.” Julianna whispered. “Marella looks wrong. Maybe she’s just tired after the campaign, but she looks sick. Too thin and too pale. And she isn’t smiling. Marella is always smiling, even when she feels like shit. And she hasn’t even looked at me. Why is she ignoring me? Something is not right. I can feel it.”
David looked at his wife and tried to hide his smile. “Jules, you find a conspiracy behind every door these days,” he said quietly. He looked around to ensure that the other four couples seated at their table were otherwise engaged. “I vote for tired, no, make that exhausted. My God, five months ago, she was a farm wife in Lodatia, now she’s been thrust into the international spotlight as the wife of the President. That would exhaust anyone. I know if you ran for president, it would have a negative impact on me.”
Julianna smirked. “If I became President, sir, it would have a negative impact on both of us.”
David sighed and ran a hand through his short, silver hair. His piercing blue eyes gazed at his wife, his fondness apparent. “Well, instead of jumping to conclusions, let’s wait until the reception at the Lodatian Embassy. There are a lot of rules and protocols for visiting dignitaries. Maybe it just isn’t appropriate to buddy up to an old friend at a state dinner. Once you get up close and personal with Marella, you can get a better fix on things. That woman has been through the wringer, what with that opposition group trying to assassinate her husband not once, but twice. I imagine the stress of clinging to Lodatia’s newly formed democratic government is a kind of like hanging on to a cliff, knowing that if you fall, there will be no net to catch you. Cut her some slack and do not tell her she looks awful.”
NAVY SEAL'S MATCH
by Amber Leigh Williams
Contemporary Romance
 384 pp.
 $6.99 (paperback) $4.49 (kindle)
Blurb:
Former SEAL Gavin Savitt always knew who he was—until his last deployment ended tragically. Now he’s home, his mind hijacked by trauma and the shadow of his once-perfect sight. Yet in this new hazy, unclear world, one person stands out—Mavis Bracken.
There are a million reasons why Gavin shouldn’t be with Mavis, including that she’s his best friend’s little sister. Yet he longs for her touch, her freckles and her special way with wild, skittish beasts like him. He just needs the courage to take his life back. And Mavis won’t let him give up without a fight.
“I know it’d be better for you if I left.”
“You let me be the judge of that,” she advised.
“The moment you’re burdened by me,” he said, slowly, “I’m out of here.”
She didn’t agree. No. Instead, she raised herself onto her toes.
Gavin’s eyes closed and his breath hitched as her kiss washed breathily over his lips and blew him away. Answers cropped up inside him, bright like candles. His hand moved to the back of her head, no more able to snuff them out than he was to convince her to walk away.
My review:
Navy SEAL’S Match. by Amber Leigh Williams is a Harlequin Superromance that is part of the ‘Fairhope, Alabama’ series and features Gavin Savitt, whose military service left him with both physical and emotional wounds. The unexpected contacts with his best friend’s sister, Mavis Bracken, help him deal with some of his challenges, but this may not be enough to keep him from repeating his pattern of fleeing from those who care about him.
This contemporary military romance has one of my favorite tropes, a wounded hero, and the author does a great job of depicting not only his challenges but some of the impact on those who care about him. I love Mavis’ quirky personality and her unconventional approach to various problems but I thought her handicap was a little glossed over and I was a little troubled about some of the blowback the pair had to deal with from those who should have been supportive. I understand the protective instincts, but I thought some of the actions were excessive and some of the following scenes seemed to be a little rushed. The parental issues that the hero has to deal with are creepy and didn’t seem to flow well with the rest of the story, even though they explain elements of Gavin’s pattern of behavior. The paranormal aspect of the story imparted an interesting twist, but I wish it had been expounded upon more.
Nonetheless, this story had a great combination of humor, romance, and a couple of appealing animals, and I was quickly invested in the relationship between the main characters as well as entertained by several of the secondary ones. This tale is part of a series and can be read as a stand-alone story but I have to wonder whether some of my reservations about the pacing come from not having read the previous books and being unfamiliar with much of the backstory. I like the author’s characters and I will be looking for more of her stories.
That is, until Mia Evans, the burned-out, anxiety ridden author, needing to get away from her real life, nearly runs him over with her car. Seeing the haunted expression in her gaze and a body he craves, the Dom in him knows he must have her, must taste her and feel her writhing beneath him. But will he be willing to risk his heart for the untamed passion he finds in her arms?
***********************
Excerpt
Mia shoved the gear shift into park and opened her car door. She stumbled out. Her knees trembled. Her belly performed somersaults. She sputtered, with a hand to her chest as she took in the scene, “Are you all right? I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you, I—”
The horse snorted at her and stomped a hoof. And, oh my goodness, it was a gorgeous black stallion with a small teardrop of white fur just above his eyes. The horse was absolutely huge. But the beastie didn’t show any fear or anxiety at almost being struck by a car. It was more like he was annoyed that he had been forced to stop. He vibrated with energy.
Her gaze rose. The man in the saddle had an air of calm authority about him and obviously extended that serenity to the beast. The man was large, or maybe he just seemed intimidating on top of the horse. He was wearing blue jeans and a gray flannel shirt, as well as a brown leather coat in deference to the chill. He tipped his black Stetson up as he studied her, his rich, dark sable hair grazing his impressively broad shoulders. There was a good week’s worth of dark stubble lining his firm, square jaw that was currently clenched tightly. He had high cheekbones and thick black brows that were scrunched in an irritated scowl. But it was his eyes—the intensity of his direct, forthright, charcoal gaze which blazed in fury—that made her feel like he’d peeled away every one of her pretenses and layers to reveal the scared ninny at the center.
“You need to be more careful, city girl,” he chewed out. Displeasure laced his husky voice that made her think of roaring fires and brandy.
Mia flinched like she’d been struck. She hated confrontations of any kind. She always fumbled and never held her own. Her anxiety bounded to new heights and she prayed she didn’t make more of a fool out of herself. “I’m really sorry. I’ve been driving all day and am a little tired. You came out of nowhere.”
The man shook his head and replied, “Just be more careful, city girl.”
His enigmatic eyes pierced through her. The sexy, surly cowboy could obviously tell that she didn’t have her ducks in a row. In fact, she didn’t even have ducks—more like a band of kittens doped up on catnip.
The Melded Child by Jane Routley (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
For ten years the peace negotiated by the Tari has held firm. But greedy eyes watch in the distance, coveting the peaceful lands of Yarmar and even the Tari themselves. A new demon master rises bringing pollution and violence. When Yani the Raven is kidnapped, sorceress Marigoth and her companion Ezratah are drawn to Armaya and a trap set by a brutal necromancer and his insane sister. Meanwhile Elena Starchild’s daughter Alyx, heir to the throne of the Mori finds herself wounded and on the run in a forest full of dark magic. And in the company of a bitter Mirayan enemy.
Can the insular Tari dreaming in the secret land of Ermora be awoken before the demon fire consumes them? And can a Melded Child bring harmony in clasped hands before it is too late?
Excerpt
Mortal enemies Alex Verday and Serge Madraga are in the land of Ernundra seeking the help of the powerful mage race, the Tari, in their fight against a powerful necromancer.
“What a good idea,” said Jerandine. She put her hands on a big earthenware teapot and there was the sound of water being poured. A moment later, fragrant smelling steam came out of the pot’s spout.
Impatience gripped Alyx. Every day death angels attacked the Red Seagani and Sweet Life only knew what was happening to her mother. Yet here they were sitting round watching these layabouts discussing the best tea to eat with honey cakes.
“If they’re not going to help us, we should go,” she hissed at Serge.
“Let me ask them about Olga before we rush off. And we might as well eat. We haven’t had anything since midnight.”
He took a cake and bit into it carefully.
“Mir! That's delicious.”
Alyx bit into one. He was right. Warm syrupy honey filled her mouth with sweetness. Every other thought suddenly receded.
“Have some tea,” said Jerandine. “I’ve cooled it for you. It should be just right.”
Alyx accepted the cup and took a sip. It’s delicious warmth filed her with a relaxed golden feeling. Just the right temperature. Thirstily she drank it down.
***
As she puts down her empty cup she has an odd sense that there is something she is supposed to do. She can’t seem to remember what it is. Does it matter? Probably not!
She smiles at the young man sitting beside her. What is his name? Serge? That’s it. He smiles back at her. A delicious shyness fills her. He is very handsome.
