Synopsis

Hynd Perrent leads a lonely life, rejected by most of society after a debilitating illness permanently changed him. He has spent nearly a decade investigating the disappearance of a military unit, Seventh Dragoons, in a war nearly a century prior, content to immerse himself in the frustrating search and the book he intends to write about it.

When his sister sets him up with a handsome stranger, Hynd can scarcely believe his luck, unable to recall the last time somebody wanted to be near him and did not fear or revile him for his illness. But Julius Ocere has come for a different reason: Hynd’s. He wants to learn what happened to the Seventh and prove that his great-grandfather was not a traitor.

While a research assistant isn’t what Hynd had hoped for, he takes Julius on. The mystery they uncover is larger than either of them could have imagined, and it will take both of them together to finally put the ghosts of the Seventh to rest.

Hynd was in the study, bent over a book when Alycia arrived. He ought to have known something was suspicious from her sudden appearance in his doorway, but he had been squinting at faded pages all day, and his eye wasn’t working quite right. So, he was caught off-guard when she said, voice sly, “I’ve found you a lover.”

“Oh,” said Hynd, and then, “no.”

“Well, perhaps not yet.” Alycia entered the study and dropped into the opposite chair. “A potential lover. He’s Viola’s cousin. Julius Ocere. Have you met him?” She reached across the desk and plucked up his pen, fiddling with it as she spoke.

“No,” said Hynd again, turning a page. He had to be careful when doing so, for the book was so old, the material so worn, that the slightest tug could send things flying disastrously out of their bindings. The book—one of Captain Walsh’s journals, written during the end of the Lily Wars—was on loan from the Royal University library; to wreck the library’s treasure would be to wreck his access to the Old Archives, and at that point, Hynd could bid farewell to ever completing his manuscript.

“I do love it when you stop listening to me,” Alycia said. Had she been speaking?

When he glanced at her, she rolled her eyes theatrically. “Thank you, brother. As I was saying, Mr. Ocere wants to meet you. He’s very interested in you.”

That seemed unlikely, all things considered, but when Hynd raised a dubious eyebrow at her, she continued more fiercely than before. “I mean it! Listen, I didn’t sell you to him—”

“I should hope not.”

That got him a scowl. “He asked about you,” Alycia continued. “I was talking with Viola, and I happened to mention the book you’re writing, on the Seventh Dragoons, and immediately, he was right there. Apparently, he’s as interested in the Dragoons as you are.”

Which…wasn’t where Hynd had thought things would go. “Really?”

“Truly. When I told him about you, he became more and more interested. Viola says that he recently parted ways with his lover, and even though it was amicable—at least, according to Viola, though God knows whether she’s right about that—Mr. Ocere is lonely. He wanted me to pass a message on to you.”

Something flipped a little in Hynd’s stomach. He tried to quash it—don’t get your hopes up—but it was like a queer little flame burning inside him. It wasn’t exactly as though Hynd were drowning in suitors; of course, a man personally asking to call upon him would have an impact. He knew that, and he knew it was foolish, and he still couldn’t help the warmth that rose in his cheeks.

Alycia noticed and smirked. “He wants to meet you,” she said, in a singsong way.

“When?”

“Tomorrow night, eight o’clock. At the Vine and Blade. Do you know where that is?”

Hynd did, and told her as much, which made her look pleased as a cat in cream. “Good. So, you’ll meet him?”

“Last time you tried to arrange a meeting with a gentleman for me, he didn’t even appear.”

“I’m sure Julius Ocere will appear.”

“The time before that,” Hynd reminded her, “the man you found was actually planning on wooing you.”

Alycia colored and turned her face away. “Felix Roddan was just a silly boy. I can’t believe I even gave him the time of day. No, this isn’t like that. He’s interested in you, Hynd. He asked all about your work, and he wanted to know about your hobbies and what you like. He was enthralled that you’re a Royal Scholar, you know. He didn’t think twice about me.”

The funny feeling had returned, stronger than before. Hynd swallowed. “Did you tell him about me?”

“Of course, I did. I answered every question he had.” She tilted her head, looking concerned. “Did that breach your privacy?”

“No, that’s not… I mean, did you tell him about me?”

Alycia blinked at him, but he couldn’t tell if her confusion was sincere or feigned. “Yes,” she finally said, and her tone, at least, was decisive. “I told him all about you.”

“And he wants to meet me?”

“He sent you a message, didn’t he? You ought to send him a response as soon as possible. He seems like a busy fellow.”

No doubt, Julius Ocere was a busy fellow. Busier than Hynd, at any rate. It was easy to have lots of free time when one never left the house except on mandatory errands. It was easy to avoid packed schedules when one had no friends.

“You’re making that face,” said Alycia. “Don’t. Just send him a message and go tomorrow evening. He’s very nice, and he’s dashing, and he’s utterly handsome—tall and golden—and he practically begged me to mention him to you. What more could you want?”

She winked at him and rose, vanishing back into the hallway. Alone, he returned to his work but found himself unable to concentrate. His mind kept picking over the conversation. Tall and golden. What more could Hynd want?

My review:

3.75

Seventh by Rachel White centers around Hynd Perrent’s determined research into the mysterious disappearance of a military unit. When Julius Ocero wants to join him in researching the group, there are multiple hurdles to overcome, including fear of the Blight, missing information, and active opposition…and a question of whether their attraction is mutual or if their potential relationship doomed before it begins.

This m/m fantasy story has an interesting twist on research and emphasizes the challenges that must be overcome when one has a visible disfigurement. I liked the gradual unfolding of clues to the mystery and I enjoyed watching the way the relationship evolved from its rocky start. The story vividly evoked the pain of being constantly judged and I was reassured to see that Hynd had someone who was definitely in his corner. I like mystery stories, so this was fun for me, and having the romantic element was a nice bonus.

I was still left with multiple questions and hope there are additional stories in this series that flesh out some of the elements. I thought a particular reaction by one of the secondary characters at the end was pretty calm, considering what had been revealed, and I wonder if there will be more repercussions in a future tale. This is the first story I have read by this author and I definitely would like to read more stories in this universe.

Rueberry Orchard by Michele Notaro (Review)

Rueberry Orchard

Beyond the Realm: Remember, Book 1

by

Michele Notaro

“There’s no time. Remember Rueberry Orchard.”

A beautiful man in strange clothing starts invading my dreams, and even though I know he isn’t real, the dreams—mind-links, according to him—are so vivid it’s hard to imagine this man doesn’t exist. After a few of these nightly visits, I start looking forward to meeting him and listening to his smooth voice as he tries to convince me to go to Rueberry Orchard.

To my surprise, the place really exists, but I know it would be crazy to go there when it’s ten hours away… right?

When the visits don’t stop, some deep desire inside me knows I have to listen to this dream man, even if it’s absolutely insane. I follow his instructions to Rueberry Orchard, and nothing in this world could’ve prepared me for what I find. Or for the wild adventure I’m about to embark on.

My review:

3.5 out of 5 stars

Rueberry Orchard by Michele Notaro is part of the ‘Beyond the Realm: Remember’ series and centers on Rhile Lore, who starts being haunted by a man in his dreams who is urging him to travel to someplace named Rueberry Orchard. Accompanied by his best friend, Rhile embarks on a fantastical journey that introduces him to a world he could never have dreamed of…or could he have?

This adult gay fantasy romance introduces a world that has fascinating beings such as elves, dwarves, lacunae, and fae, as well as a dysfunctional family that has a remarkable influence on the world. There are multiple tropes, including amnesia, mate bonds, a central source of magic, and an evil, power-hungry villain who is willing to destroy any number of things in a quest for supremacy.

The story is told in alternating points of view between the main characters, with some shifts between past and present. I was a bit frustrated by the personalities of the focal couple, since their relationship vacillated between an intense attraction and either rejection or fear of rejection. Rhile’s mate is recovering from some horrible experiences, but his emotional outbursts and overprotective actions sometimes made me wonder about how equal the partnership was, despite the purported capabilities of Rhile and his best friend.

The erratic training, constant fleeing, and vague allusions to the ruling arrangements and enforcements made me less than convinced of the eliteness of this group and their superiority to others. I think this story has great potential, but it has a lot of dangling threads, so I hope there are additional stories in the work to explore some of the other interesting secondary characters and to flesh out elements of this world.

Fly Twice Backward by David McCracken (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFP

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author David McCracken, who shares...

ELF: What was the most difficult thing to overcome on your path to becoming a published author and how did you conquer it?

DM: The hardest thing to overcome in getting my novel done and published was succumbing to distractions. Hunger, sleepiness, restlessness, frustration, an urge to keep on researching past a reasonable stopping point, an urge to stop editing before a reasonable stopping point.   I think it all comes down to anxiety. To whatever degree I did overcome the anxiety, and I did enough so as to finish a two hundred forty thousand word novel, I think it was through developing a strong urge to keep on, always coming back to the work. My mantra was, “I can always start.” Writing a few words or editing another paragraph could be enough, and could be enough to get me going again. When I just couldn’t get going, I found a catnap, a form of calming meditation, actually, worked wonders.

I got in a state of mind where the novel pretty much always came up on my short list of things to do. Sometimes I’d bounce from one part of the work to another to keep going. I decided if I didn’t have the energy for a scene, I might well drop it or put in “an explosion”.The same distractions got in the way of the other part of getting the novel out, the marketing of it. In both parts, I’d do just a bit more before stopping, and then a bit more than that, until I often found I’d been working for hours, finding satisfaction in what I could see developing. There are passages that still choke me up when I read them, with what’s said and how it’s said. I wrote exactly what I wanted to write, in just the way I wanted to write it. L'état, c'est moi: The state, it is I. self-publishing.

Fly Twice Backward

by

David McCracken

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Alt-history/sci-fi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

You wake back in early adolescence, adult memories intact, including ones that could make you very wealthy now. Your birth family is here, alive again, but your later families are gone, perhaps forever. What has happened, what should you do about coming problems like violence, ignorance, pollution, and global warming? You realize one key connects most, the fundamentalist strains of all the major religions, disdaining science, equality, and social welfare. You see that there are some things you can change, some you can’t, and one you don’t dare to.

Fellow idealists help you spend your growing fortune well--such as an artistic Zoroastrian prince in the Iranian oil industry, a rising officer in the Soviet army working to find a way to destroy his corrupt government, a Bahai woman struggling against Islamic brutality, a Peruvian leader working for a liberal future, and a snake-handling Christian minister, grappling with doubts, sexuality, and destiny. They are supported by an ally who develops essential psychic powers. The group faces familiar-looking corrupt politicians, religious leaders, and corporate czars, but there is an ancient force in the background, promoting greed, violence, hate, and fear.

This exciting, emotional, thoughtful, humorous, and even romantic sci-fi novel weaves progressivism, music, movies, and literature into a struggle spanning the globe. Vivid characters propel the action back up through an alternative history toward an uncertain destination. Experience the unique story and its novel telling.

EXCERPT

When she gets home from school, Mom surprises me with a borrowed newspaper, El Mundo: “I thought you might want to catch up on Latin American news. You can read this OK, can’t you?”

Ah, a test. Thank goodness I’ve been brushing up scanning her upper-level texts. I take in her sly, wolfish grin, restrain one of my own, and say,” Oh, good here’s an article on the coming Venezuelan election, Mom. Have you read it?”

“Um, no, not yet.”

I proceed to summarize the article and mention that the junta had called the elections confident of solidifying their mandate. I go on to add they would lose—and turn power back over to the military. Who’d have thought that my Latin American studies focus would come in so handy, so long before I pursued it!

Mom slinks off to putter in the kitchen, but soon our doorbell rings. She seems to run to answer it.

“David, there’s a man here, Mr. Walker, I’d like you to talk with.” Looks like trouble.

“Oh, about what?” I ask.

“Well, just to get acquainted, for now,” Mom says. “Um, we’re thinking you might be able to use a special teacher.”

Walker is a serious-looking tall man of middle age, conservatively suited.

“Are you a math teacher? I’d love to learn advanced stuff, like algebra.”

“Oh, do you already know about it?

“No, not past the name. Can you teach me algebra?”

Mom puts in, “Maybe history, David?”

“That’d be nice. I don’t know much, except some about the Second World War. I was amazed a friend of mine didn’t know who General Rommel was, though.”

“Mrs. McCracken, is there something in particular you have in mind?”

“Well, he says he came back from the future.”

“Mom, if I’d done that, I wouldn’t have been so surprised by this. You’re worrying me. You don’t want to do electroshock again, I know. You were really confused after the last time.”

“This is nonsense! I’ve never had electroshock.”

“Oh, Mom, are you back in that state? Don’t you remember? You denied it then, but . . . well, you know you wet your pants whenever you’d think about it. She was doing so well, Doctor . . ..”

EXCERPT

Max shut his apartment door and leaned against it, eyes closed, heart pounding. The sweetness of Naomi’s lips, mixed with the flavors of cumin and cinnamon, and the spice of the wine, was a potent aphrodisiac. Her body had been warm and supple against his, and he’d reacted before he could stop himself. Her humor and personality were an added bonus.

What he wouldn’t give to race next door, throw her onto her bed—or the sofa or hell, the floor—and make love to her all night long. He gripped the keys in his hand hard enough to cause the edges to make imprints in his palm. He took deep breaths to try to slow his heart rate and rein in his desire.

No matter how attracted to her he was, sex wasn’t happening.

She was drunk, and he never took advantage of anyone if they weren’t in complete control of themselves.

And she was the subject of his story. While he would do almost anything for his job, sleeping with her was a line he wouldn’t cross. Bile churned in his stomach. She was exactly the woman he wanted, he’d searched for, and she was off limits.

Plus, she was vulnerable. No matter how confident she might act, hints of old wounds escaped whenever she talked about her past or her family. There was a flicker of discomfort in those amazing blue eyes of hers, a slight twitch of a beautifully arched eyebrow, a hitch of her breath. Someone that exposed needed to be treated with care, especially when it came to matters of the heart.

The heart? He wasn’t in love with her. He was in lust. There was a difference.

Lust was what made it impossible for him not to kiss her. But he wouldn’t go any further. He wouldn’t make her regret anything later on. Because she would regret it and pull away. And he’d never get his story. And if he did succeed, she’d hate him.

My review:

4 stars

Whispers in Washington by Jennifer Wilck is part of the ‘Ticket to True Love’ series and centers around Naomi Adelman nee Reuben, who has returned to Washington, D.C. after having taken time to recover from her husband’s betrayal and the scandal surrounding his illegal activities. Her new start may include a relationship with her helpful and sexy neighbor, Max Bruder, if they can get past the secrets he also harbors.

This contemporary romance gives insight into the challenges faced by those caught up in scandals, particularly the innocent family left behind to face the media and judgement after the guilty party is apprehended. The story does a great job of presenting multi-layered characters, and although some situations were inevitable and predictable, I had no problem understanding the conflict each main character needed to work through and sympathizing with them.

I liked getting glimpses of the elements of their shared faith and how that was integrated into Naomi’s life, and the author did a great job of portraying how Naomi’s daughters were growing up but staying true to their roots, even though they were away from home. Although I was disappointed at Max’s duplicity, I could understand how he was conflicted, and I enjoyed watching the romance progress. Some of Naomi’s decisions were a little illogical to me, but obviously necessary to move the story along. This is an enjoyable and sweet romance, and I look forward to reading other stories by this author.

Book 6: The Manuscript by J.D. Light - October 22nd

Blurb

“There's no time. Remember the Manuscript.”

Omi has had vague but vivid dreams his whole life but would forget them within minutes of opening his eyes. When he started writing the dreams down as soon as he woke up, he suddenly realized the significance when things in those dreams would pop up in his daily life. A broken toaster that caused a ridiculous automobile accident that was thankfully not fatal to anyone. A pop can that exploded in the middle of class and covered his least favorite teacher in orange soda.

Omi's dreams about a man with sunflower eyes were his favorite and enough to fill the pages of a manuscript. He couldn't help but fall madly in love with the man, even if he never had a name. But the beautiful stranger never appeared like the other objects in his dreams and with every day that he didn't, Omi became more and more depressed until he finally had to lock the manuscript away and stop writing about the man.

Six years have passed since Omi has touched the manuscript, but he would recognize the man that shows up at his favorite coffee shop anywhere, even before he gets close enough for Omi to see his sunflower eyes. How is a guy supposed to react to seeing the man he's been in love with from the time he was eighteen in real life for the first time? Probably NOT how Omi does.

Canton knows that Omi is his oracle the moment he sees him… just like he knows that Omi is his mate from the very beginning. But that is impossible, since fate weavers haven't had mates in centuries, and it is absolutely forbidden to mate your oracle.

Canton has waited for his oracle for two hundred long years, and he desperately wants to finish his work, but the more time he spends with the feisty man, the harder it is to remember to keep his distance emotionally. How can he possibly spend endless hours with a man he wants so much and not get to treasure him like he wants?

The answers to that just might be found in the pages of a manuscript Omi isn't sure he wants to share.

Book 7: Amethyst Isle by Wren Kenzie - October 27th

Blurb

“There’s no time. Remember Amethyst Isle.”

Never trust a stray cat that follows you around and stares at you like it knows your darkest secrets. Especially, when that cat shows up perched on the shoulder of a huge man who demands I meet him on an abandoned pier at midnight if I don’t want to die. A man who also exposes those dark secrets right there on the street in front of my office.

My parents warned me to fear anyone who knew what I was. I should run away, but I can’t make myself do it. I’m drawn to him, and I need answers. I have to know how he knows. And just maybe he can explain the nightmares that have been ruining my nights. Explain why I feel like I’ve known him my entire life. But you know what they say about curiosity killing the cat, except this time, it’s the cat himself that might kill me.

Book 8: Imaginary Lover by Morgan Brice - October 29th

Blurb

“There’s no time. Remember your imaginary lover....”

Cory Caldwell woke up by the side of the road with no memory of how he got there. He pieces together who he is but has no idea what happened to him.

Dark visions haunt him—flashes of blood, magic, and a brutal fight. Scorching dreams of a faceless lover offer no clues. His gut warns that something urgent is eluding him, and that time is running out. Worse is the sense of bone-deep grief, as if Cory is missing part of his soul.
