Fever 
by Joan Swan introduces a powerful new author and an intriguing and unlikely hero, a fleeing convict named Teague Creek who takes Doctor Alyssa Foster hostage during his flight. An unusually high body temperature reflects a side effect of his previous life as a firefighter and his struggle to return to the one person in his life who has never lost faith in him forms the backdrop for the difficult decisions that he must make. Struggling to determine who he can depend on even as he fights against his attraction to his feisty hostage, Teague inevitably runs into vivid reminders of his previous profession and must utilize the skills he learned in his profession. The author provides wonderful realism using knowledge gained from her experience as a sonographer and undoubtedly uses her heroic husband's expertise gleaned from his profession as a firefighter. The story has a few areas where one's disbelief must be suspended but it is an exciting read with sensual scenes and amazing descriptions of the potential for destruction that fire wields in its different formats.
