Reconnecting with the Past

Have you ever reunited with a friend from years earlier? And they seemed just like you remembered them years ago?
That connection can really be fun. But werewolves live LONG lives. So if they haven't seen one in a very, very, very long time, and it was only a really, really brief moment in passing—as a Highland warrior tries to take a Highland lass in hand…and protect her from the bad guys, and she doesn't know him from any other Highlander…so he could be one of the bad guys…
And you have a conundrum, in the future. Cearnach has to admit he has a lousy time with faces and names for the long term. But there's something awfully familiar about the sexy American she-wolf who just ran him off the road as he was trying to get to a friend's wedding. Something even more disturbing because the lass recognizes him, he's sure, and she's denying it.
I love mysteries. How are you at remembering faces and names? I'm awful. I can love a particular movie star even, and can't remember the name. Or a movie. A person. Definitely names.
So for me it was perfectly feasible to think as Cearnach thinks—he's dying to know who she is. And she's adamant about denying they know each other.
Have you ever been somewhere, like maybe you know the person at the bank, then see him or her at a park? Or the grocery store? They're not in the same place you normally see them. So there's this disconnection.
When I worked at the library (for over 4 years), I would visit the nearby grocery store either before or after work, or sometimes on my day off. I'd see library patrons there all the time. I'd say hi, and some would recognize me, yet even so, there's this little bit of a surprise. I'm not supposed to be in the grocery store. I'm supposed to be in the library. Others smile and say hi and haven't a clue where they've seen me before. One patron said, "Why aren't you at the library?" LOL We did get some time off.
I just went to my library friend's son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor and saw two people who were library patrons. I recognized them, but they looked so puzzled about who I was. LOL I love it when I'm not the only one who is confused.
Of course, our heroine remembers Cearnach—and still wonders why he had tried to protect her back in the old days, still believes he didn't have totally honorable intentions. And yet, wow, Highlander in kilt, very wolfish male type, and yes, how could she forget?
She had been cloaked, trying to hide her appearance, so she could understand his forgetting her. Though scents play a role also. Which also is another trigger he has that clues him in that he knows her from somewhere.
And it's not just a "how are you" in passing either. He comes to recall that he was trying to protect her way back when. Now, he's trying to all over again.
Do you ever wonder how differently life would have turned out if you had made one choice over another? Both Cearnach and Emily do. And I have to admit, I wonder about that too.
