Wonderful explanation for what threatened the Enchanted Occasions organization. Frighteningly funny look at what can go wrong with a wedding. What a sweetheart of a groom, poor guy. I love visiting the complex and magical world this author has created and as always, this can be read as a stand-alone story but it will whet your appetite for the rest of the adventures set in this wonderfully wacky alternative universe.

A bloodcurdling wail echoed through the little stairwell, and I froze for a second, then rushed headlong down the steps two at a time, skidding to a halt halfway down the staircase when I found the source of the sound—a wriggling baby in a fuzzy pink sweater who was literally crying herself purple, possibly because the giant, tattooed mountain of a man holding her was growling down at her with a ferocious scowl on his face.  

I gripped my folder tightly and opened my mouth to protest even though the guy was twice my size, when the baby’s cries quieted for half a second and I caught that the man wasn’t growling. He was… singing?

“Something… sunshine. Only sunshine. You make me happy. Something gray? Christ.” He heaved a frustrated sigh. “Marigold, you’ve got to stop now. You’ve made your point. Be reasonable, baby girl.”

Oh. Oh, good gravy. That changed everything.

I caught my breath and stared. The man looked like he’d been torn off the stage at a rock concert, transported to Nowhere, Tennessee, and stuffed into the outfit I once wore to a middle school dance. There was no other explanation for a guy with overlong brown-blond hair, graceful black inked scrolls emerging from the collar of his wrinkled, blue button-down shirt, shiny Dockers that clung to his tree-trunk thighs, and black steel-toed boots to have appeared in this stairwell. I sure as heck hadn’t seen any other guys in this neck of the woods who were so unapologetically themselves.

And if that weren’t enough to pierce my heart, the kidlet in his arms was gorgeous, despite her tears and wiggling. She had a head full of dark curls, way more than should have been possible for a baby her age, which I’d peg at somewhere around nine months—somewhere past the shriveled-potato stage of early infancy but not nearly at the terrifying walking age.

The baby wailed again, and the giant looked genuinely panicked. He held her flat across his outstretched forearms, like he was carrying a box of pizza or helping her learn the backstroke, and he bent his knees in a kind of next-level Oompa Loompa jig in time to his stammered singing. A pink-and-white striped tote bag sat on the floor next to the wall.

“Work with me, Marigold, okay? You’re not hungry, ’cause you just drank ten gallons of formula. You’re not stinky…” He lifted the kid gingerly. “Not stinky,” he confirmed in a deep, raspy voice that did things to me. “Are you having an existential crisis? Is that a thing kids do? Do you need alone time? Are your lips chapped? Do you hate my cologne?”

The baby fussed harder, flailing her tiny feet. The man groaned, and I belatedly noticed one of those pacifier stuffed animal things lying on the floor by the giant’s boot.

I scurried down the stairs and picked it up. “I think she might be looking for this,” I said, holding it aloft. It was a gray-and-white polka-dotted chicken with a green sucker on the end.

The guy shut his eyes and shook his head. “Ah, shit.”

His eyes popped open in shock as he realized what he’d said, and he looked from me to the kid guiltily. “Fuck, forget I said that,” he muttered.

His eyes widened further. “Goddamn it all.”

I snickered. “Maybe quit while you’re ahead?”

Liars by Lucy Lennox and May Archer is the second book in the ‘Licking Thicket’ series, and centers around Parrish Partridge, who gets willingly roped into a scheme to help Diesel Church gain custody of his orphaned niece. Their charade of engagement seems to be much too comfortable, and even though they’re relative newcomers to Licking Thicket, their quirky relationship seems perfect for the town. Now to distinguish fact from fiction and keep hearts from being broken.

 

This adult gay romance is a hilarious and heartwarming continuation of a very unique series. All of the inhabitants of this town are precious and unique, and the two main characters of this story are no exception. Parrish had a minor role in the previous book (“Fakers”) and we got to know him and his very big heart as well as his skill at dealing with both an infant and her frazzled uncle in this story. Diesel is just as wonderful, with his kind heart and ability to cherish all who have come under his protection (including the couple of ornery roosters who patrol the Pullet Palace). Diesel was introduced in the previous book as well, and I’m delighted he got his turn in the spotlight. The descriptions are hilarious, including Diesel’s conversation with his pre-verbal niece, Marigold, as are the exclamations that erupt from Parrish (e.g. “sweet blessed corn niblets!”), whose apology casserole might need an apology casserole, lol.

 

This book is just plain fun and full of hijinks, as well as a sweet romance and a tribute to determination and generosity, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to read the series thus far. I can’t wait to read more stories in this quirky series, since the tales thus far have definitely brightened my days and provided much-needed levity.

Thinking about Cooper though… well, that did something to me. It made me annoyed, mostly, but for some reason that annoyance made itself known through what I’d begun to think of as “angry dick.” Yes, thoughts of arguing with Cooper made me hard. And since I was fixing to spend the entire summer sleeping near, fighting with, and pretending to kiss and hug the man, this was going to be a problem.

“Keep it together,” I grumbled under my breath. Nacho’s ears perked up in the rearview mirror. “Oh, not you, baby. You’re fine. Go back to sleep. Daddy’s just having a sexuality crisis, no big.”

I remembered one time when Cooper was staying over during a spring break, I’d come home late from helping a neighbor fix his tractor shed and run right into Cooper pouring himself a glass of ice water in the darkened kitchen. He’d been standing there in nothing but navy-striped boxer briefs, and I’d stared at him like he was some kind of alien.

“Nine,” he’d said slowly. “Didn’t know you were out this late.”

I’d glanced my fill of his entire body, curious more than anything about what another man outside my family looked like without his clothes on. Since I’d helped my dad on the farm and worked at Walt’s, I hadn’t played school sports and had the locker room experience like some others had.

I remembered the air getting weird between us and his underwear getting bulgier as we stood there. Had it been possible he was getting hard for me? I’d known he was gay, but this was something else.

“Uh, yeah,” I’d croaked. “Was working at the farm next door. Sorry.” I’d scooted past him and raced for my room, kicking myself for apologizing for being in my own damned kitchen. After that, every time I’d seen Cooper I hadn’t been able to help but look at his fly to see if he was getting hard for me again. It had been this inappropriate addiction I’d had that had pissed me the hell off and started the odd discord between us. Was it ego? Did I really care if some gay guy found me attractive?

So yeah. I was sweating buckets and probably going to puke and faint at the same time the minute I saw him at the renovation cabin. Super-duper.

When I finally pulled off the deserted mountain highway and onto the road where the property was located, I finally pulled over and upchucked into the weeds at the side of the forest. Nothing like christening a new place with a little vomit.

Nacho whimpered and whined from the half-open window, so I waved my hand at him to let him know I was still alive. I used some napkins from the side pocket to wipe my mouth and then swished with water from my water bottle. Finally, I popped in some mint gum from the console and tried to take a deep breath. At least now I wasn’t going to puke when I saw Cooper.

I took a sip of my lemonade. “I just need to know how to work the shower and turn the sofa into a bed and I’m all set.”

Cooper’s brow crinkled. “What sofa?”

“You know, RVs always have like a sofa that turns into an extra bed. Don’t they?”

“Well, maybe. But this one doesn’t. It has recliners.”

I remembered seeing the big leather captain’s chairs in front of the flat-screen television. “Shit. Where am I supposed to sleep?”

He shrugged. “Well, the banquette turns into a bed for a toddler. I think it’s about five feet long. Maybe you could try that.”

“I’m six four. Didn’t you think to ask them for the kind that had an extra bed in it?”

Cooper placed a hand on his hip. “Yeah. So my boyfriend and I could keep a healthy distance from each other at night. No, Nine. I didn’t tell them we needed separate beds. I assume it’s hard enough for the folks at Stallion to believe their beloved lumberjack poster boy is actually queer, and any evidence to the contrary might not be a great idea.”

Uh-oh. Now he was pissed.

“Fine. I’ll sleep outside.”

His jaw dropped. “I don’t have fucking rabies, you asshole. It’s a giant king-sized bed. I thought we could share it. But if you’d rather sleep outside with the wolves and bears, then by all means.”

Before I knew it, he’d stormed out.

Shit. I’d only meant that… I hadn’t wanted to impose on him and assume we’d…

I sighed. The truth was, there was no way I could imagine myself sharing a bed with Cooper. I didn’t even want to share a bed with one of my own brothers. How the hell was I supposed to wake up with morning wood next to a guy who… who… And what if he had morning wood too? What if our morning woods… touched?

I felt my dick begin to act out the scenario. Not helpful.

Say You’ll Be Nine by Lucy Lennox features Isaac Denton Winshed, who is great at making DIY videos for all kinds of handyman projects, but not so great at saying no. When he is paired with his brother’s best friend, Cooper Heath, to work on a renovation project that will be documented on social media, he discovers that he, too, is a work-in-progress who may have plenty to learn from as well as teach the other man.

This adult contemporary gay romance is a wonderful feel-good story that hit all of the right buttons for me. I love stories that feature humble unassuming characters who find someone who sees and values them, when all their life they’ve been overlooked. There are multiple tropes that mesh well, including exploring and expanding one’s sexuality, sibling’s best friend seen in a new light, forced proximity, a fake relationship that becomes real, gay for you, noble sacrifices, annoying siblings…well, you get the picture.

The camaraderie that develops, Nacho the dog’s exuberance, and the fascinating glimpse of social media intersecting with real life all kept me interested in the story, and the combination of laughter, intensity, and challenges being met gave me a great sense of satisfaction and made me want to read even more books by this author. This is theoretically a stand-alone story, but given that Isaac is one of ten siblings, I hope there will be other stories about his family even though they are all ostensibly straight. Those in search of a lovely and fun romance that will lift your spirits should make sure to give this story a try.
