Love in Mission City: The Wedding Duet by Gabbi Grey (spotlight)

Love in Mission City: The Wedding Duet

by
Gabbi Grey

Love in Mission City: The Wedding Duet Synopsis

The Wedding Duet includes a novella and short story

Mission City is tucked in the charming Cedar Valley in southwestern British Columbia. If you love heartwarming, contemporary small-town gay romances, then come home to Mission City and fall in love with the men and women who live there. Romance shows up in the unlikeliest places. And trouble has a way of finding them...

Too Much in Love to Care

Taryn Briggs found the love of her life when she stopped to tow a stranded car owned by a beautiful blonde. Now she and Stephanie are engaged and planning their trip down the aisle. Life's just about perfect, but the one thing that would make it better for Taryn would be getting her brother Lachlan to show up for the ceremony. The only problem? Stephanie's brother Cooper is already a member of the wedding party, and the two men get along like cats and dogs. But surely Lachlan and Cooper can set their friction aside, just for one day?

Too Much in Love to Care is a 10k short story about a classic engagement, crazy wedding planning, two headstrong brothers, and a lesbian wedding to remember. This story first appeared in the anthology Love is All Volume 8.

Never Thought I’d Want You

Cooper Gander adores his sister, Stephanie. He's thrilled to be standing at her side as best man while she marries the woman she loves. He's determined to make the day go well and not get derailed by the presence of Taryn's brother Lachlan, a guy way too hot to have that stick up his ass. One day, and then Cooper won't have to see his annoying brother-in-law-to-be more than once in a blue moon. He can handle one day.

Lachlan Briggs will do anything for his baby sister. Even stand next to loud and proud Cooper, her fiancée's brother, in the wedding party. So what if Cooper evokes every emotion from envy to irritation to lust, dialed up to 11? This wedding isn't about them. Lachlan can control himself, keep his mouth shut, and ignore Cooper for just one day.

Never Thought I’d Want You is a 15k word enemies-to-lovers, opposites-attract, age-gap gay romance between a by-the-book lawyer, a freespirited advertising executive, and the wedding no one will ever forget. This novella first appeared in the anthology Save the Date.

Never Thought I’d Want You

Cooper

Stephanie watched me intently. She did that—let me work through my ruminations until I was able to come to a conclusion. Hell, sometimes not even that. Sometimes I needed time to find the next sentence. “I could hit on the server again.”

“To make Lachlan jealous?”

I squinted. “Steph, he’s straight. Like a ramrod. Did you see that picture of him and what’s-her-name?”

“Lydia? I thought they made a striking couple, but she wasn’t right for him. He needs someone…softer. More considerate. Less self-obsessed.”

I eyed my sister. I didn’t think Lachlan deserved any of those things. I sighed. “He hates me.”

“He doesn't hate you. Lookjust keep him busy. He likes to be busy. He's busy all the timeno vacation time for Lachlan Briggs.”

“Fine, then. He and I can do all the last-minute wedding stuff.”

Tara’s married to her soulmate and Dominant, George. They are about to celebrate their 30th anniversary and are more in love today than yesterday. George encouraged Tara to start writing, and with each passing day, she’s more thankful for his insistence that she tell her stories and his partnership on this journey. There’s no one else in this world she’d ever want by her side. He is her happily ever after.

A.D. Ellis

A lot of her time is also devoted to phone call avoidance and her hatred of cooking.
She loves chocolate, wine, pizza, and naps along with reading and writing romance. These loves don't leave much time for housework, much to the chagrin of her husband. Who would pick cleaning the house over a nap or a good book? She uses any extra time to increase her fluency in sarcasm.

MA Wardell

Writing as M.A. Wardell, Lambda Literary Award nominee Matt writes spicy queer rom-coms.

His goal is to tell adult gay love stories with a diverse representation of flawed and damaged characters who find healing through love.

Matt loves rom-coms and has always wished for better representation, so he's writing the stories he wishes existed. The queer men in his stories are flawed and messy. Helping them find their HEA is Matt's passion.

Rinda Elliott

I write in many genres, always with a love story in the mix. That love story can be M/F, M/M, M/M/F and more. I tend to read more M/M than anything else, so that’s what I mostly write. I’m also an AVID reader, collector of music, and love cozy games!

While all of my books are romantic and sexy, most lean toward erotic. For adult books that are just sexy, there are my Beri O’Dell books and if you’re looking for sweeter, but still sexy, there’s the young adult trilogy I wrote for Harlequin Teen. All of the others? Expect some heat because I love it. I also love unusual stories and credit growing up in a family of curious life-lovers who moved all over the country. Books and movies full of fantasy, science fiction and romance kept us amused, especially in some of the stranger places. For years, I tried to separate my darker side with my humorous and romantic one. I published short fiction, but things really started happening when I gave in and mixed it up. I have several ongoing series, both contemporary romantic suspense and paranormal. You can find out about them in the links above and to the right. When not lost in fiction, I love making wine, collecting music, gaming and spending time with my husband and two children.

Too Much in Love to Care

Gabbi Grey

Stephanie

I've been in love with Taryn from the moment she climbed out of her tow truck to rescue me and my broken-down car. She’s strong, fearless, and damn beautiful to boot. I have the rings, she said yes, now all I need is to get her to the altar. But our respective brothers, Cooper and Lachlan, seem determined to wreck our wedding.

Taryn

Helping stranded motorists is my superpower, and rescuing Stephanie turned my world upside down. Loving her is the easiest thing in the world. Managing to get married while our brothers fight like cats and dogs is a whole other thing. I can't decide if I want to elope, or to lock the guys in a bathroom together till they learn how to get along. It's worse than a six-car pileup, trying to make this wedding and this blended family work out. So will we manage to merge our families seamlessly or are our brothers destined to be enemies forever?

Too Much in Love to Care is a 10k short story about a classic engagement, crazy wedding planning, two headstrong brothers, and a lesbian wedding to remember.

Cooper grinned as he dug into his chicken. “You know, this is pretty good.”

“You were expecting rubber chicken?” I arched an eyebrow.

“Well…”

“Given what Mom and Dad paid, I’d hoped it would be top-notch food.”

“Well, you’re in luck.” He buttered his roll and then put a huge chunk on his asparagus.

“Would you like some vegetables with your butter?” Lachlan frowned.

Cooper grinned and offered a little wave of…pleasure? Teasing?

I couldn’t figure it out.

Lachlan scowled.

Then bent down to rub his shin.

He glared at Taryn before clearly realizing Cooper and I were watching the entire byplay.

Cooper chuckled. “Bested by a girl.”

“Hush.” I hissed at him. “Don’t ever let Taryn hear you say that.”

“She gets my humor. So what’s for dessert?”

I narrowed my eyes. He knew we were having chocolate mousse or apple crumble. Wedding cakes were, as far as I was concerned, overrated. Plus, we had a couple of guests with dietary restrictions—better to give two simple choices that most people could enjoy at least one of. “Cooper—”

“I just, uh, need to stretch my legs. I promise I’ll be back.” He rose, offered a sheepish smile, and headed for the door.

What the hell?

Lachlan rose and headed toward the back of the hall.

Just beyond those doors were the washrooms.

I turned to Taryn.

She shrugged.

We engaged our parents in a discussion about our excitement over our honeymoon.

Dinner plates were cleared.

Still no sign of either man.

My review:

4 stars

“Love is All, Vol. 7” is an anthology of m/m and f/f romance novellas and short stories by Gabbi Grey, Xio Axelrod, et al. Each tale artfully depicts the challenges of following one’s heart and the joys of finding love.

Each story is set up with a unique twist, yet all celebrate love. I lean more toward reading m/m rather than sapphic romance, but this collection gave me a chance to read stories by several new-to-me authors, and I appreciated the opportunity to expand my horizons. Even better, this is a charitable endeavor to benefit transgender individuals.

I continue to be a fan of Gabbi Grey, and enjoyed her tale of discovering something that’s been in front of you all of the time; I was intrigued by R. L. Merrill’s exploration of the feminine archetypes as portrayed by someone who is exploring such and finds more than she bargained for, including whether you actually can go home again; and Piper Malone’s rebound vacation romance tale was fun and I adored the secondary characters who styled Bram. All of the stories were entertaining and easy to read and a delightful celebration of love. I am happy to add new authors to my list of those to keep an eye out for.

Synopsis

Colin

Being rejected by family hurt like hell, but I kept my head high, left my toxic relatives behind, and moved across the country to Gaynor Beach, CA. Luckily, I have great furry company. My French bulldog puppy, Widget, was dumped on me for not meeting my parents' ridiculously high standards either, so we're comforting each other. With a nice rental house and a new job, Widget and I were ready for a fresh start—until I got a devastating diagnosis. I can't take care of Widget properly while trying to save my own life, and I expect a long, hard road. I'll have to break both our hearts and put her up for adoption, for her sake. Right?

James

I’ve wanted a pet forever, but my family circumstances didn’t allow it. Now I’m away from my masses of relatives and on my own, and I’m ready to take on a furry companion. My friend, a guy who never says no to an animal in need, introduces me to Colin and his beautiful puppy Widget. I’m horrified Colin feels he needs to give her up just because he's sick, but I’m happy to take Widget as a temporary foster. I’m also happy to offer support to the new guy in town who is so very alone during a time of crisis. Helping someone in need comes naturally to me. But what if that temporary help turns into me wanting a forever relationship?

This is a gay romance slow-burn novel about new beginnings, found family, unconditional love, and a puppy named Widget. This middle-angst story has a guaranteed happily ever after.

Exclusive excerpt:

“And now you need to give Chambord up?”

Yet again, I nodded. “Yeah. I need to go up to LA regularly, and I can’t leave her alone in the rental house. I suppose I should’ve looked for something closer, but I didn’t want a big city, you know? Gaynor Beach was the right size in the right location. Of course, I hadn’t realized how bad—” My voice broke and I couldn’t go on. I struggled to keep my emotions tamped down. This should’ve been easy. I’d barely had the dog two weeks. We weren’t bonded. Not really. So I’d find her a new home, and—

“Sounds like you love her, though.”

“Which means giving her up. For her sake.”

“There might be an alternative.”

I blinked several times before meeting Arthur’s gaze. The day was unusually cloudy, so I hadn’t worn sunglasses, and the light was making my eyes water. “I don’t understand…”

“What if I found someone to help you out? Who’d come and take Chambord for walks? And watch her when you go to LA for treatment?”

My head swam. “That could last months. Years, if I don’t get a transplant. Or I might die.” There, I’d said it. Admitted my greatest fear. I’d always believed I’d be brave in the face of death, but I was only thirty-two years old. I wasn’t ready to die.

You might not have a choice.

Doesn’t mean I can’t fight.

Arthur placed a comforting hand on my elbow. “I have a friend. Great guy. He’s been wanting to foster, but I think he’s a little commitment-shy, if you know what I mean. He’s never had a pet, so he’s not sure he wants all that responsibility, but he loves animals. When he comes over to my place, he’s happy to hang out with them. Okay, except the snake.”

“You have a snake?” That felt vaguely alarming to me.

“No, I had a snake. Someone abandoned one in a rental house when they took off. Landlady knew me and asked me to take care of it. Poor thing was in need of some care, which I provided. He now lives in a house not too far from here. Great family. Responsible kids.”

Responsible. Like I needed to be. “So you have a friend who likes hanging out with pets? Hardly seems fair that he’d do all the work and leave Chambord with me the rest of the time.”

Excerpt – Big Sky Boyfriend by Gabbi Grey

The day Tate McCready walked back into my life was just an ordinary Friday. And I was doing the same thing as I’d done pretty much every day since he left years ago—surveying my pumpkin field to make sure things were growing properly.

A few things had changed. I’d finally bought the greenhouses I wanted, and I was growing organic bok choy.

Years.

Fifteen years. One hundred and eighty months. Seven hundred and eighty weeks. Five thousand, four hundred and seventy-five days.

Give or take.

He’d left on the last Sunday in August—headed to the big city of Toronto to attend an undergraduate business program.

I’d stayed behind to attend the University of the Fraser Valley for agriculture.

We’d been eighteen. So goddamned young. I could barely remember that boy now.

But I’d never forget the grief he’d suffered. The nights he’d lain awake. The promised letter that’d never come.

So what the hell was Tate doing here now? On my land? At one of the busiest times in my year? Those pumpkins would be ready to be picked soon—just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving and, of course, Halloween.

Seeing Tate nearly stole my breath.

I fingered the inhaler in my pocket.

He advanced toward me with slow, measured steps.

I’d never seen him move so deliberately. He was a mover. A strider. A man who hustled with great speed.

We’d joked he moved at the speed of a hare while I moved at the speed of a tortoise.

I was very much a slow, steady, and measured man. Had always been—would always be.

“Hello, Wyatt.”

VL Locey

V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, Dr. Who, Torchwood, belly laughs, yoga, reading and writing lusty tales, walking, Greek mythology, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.)

She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, one dog, two cats, and a flock of assorted domestic fowl.

When not writing lusty tales, she can be found enjoying her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, fresh cup of java in hand.

Chantal Mer

Chantal Mer is an author and optimist. Her stories explore relationships and what it means to be family. When she’s not writing about strong women, strong men, and strong love, she can be found walking her adorable dog, volunteering at her kids’ school (in the library, of course), teaching at the local university, and reading.

Chantal lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband, kids, Toffee the Wonder Dog, and vicious cat, Gracie.

Susan Scott Shelley

USA Today bestselling author Susan Scott Shelley writes stories with heat and heart, where love always wins. Her romances give readers lighthearted and emotionally satisfying escapes into happily ever after. In addition to crafting stories, she is also a professional voiceover artist and enjoys lending her voice to a wide range of projects.

She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and is an avid fan of her hometown sports teams. Her favorite things include running (honestly, it's more like jogging), sports (especially hockey), hard rock (but will listen to anything from heavy metal to show tunes), and writing about people from all walks of life finding their special someone.

Lee Blair

Lee Blair is a queer author from Oregon who writes low angst, funny, M/M contemporary romance. She's constantly amused by the antics of her two ginger cats, considers daydreaming about future trips to Scotland a part-time job, and is obsessed with Schitt's Creek to an alarming degree.

Sean Michael

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
