If the kiss had stayed careful and guarded, she might have continued to question it. But the blindfold disappeared. She’d fallen asleep. Her eyes flew open, and he was there. Oh, my God. He was there! Heated eyes watched her. Rakish dark hair fell over his forehead as he breathed hard, and the morning sun lit up the world behind him. She shuddered and took a deep breath to speak, but his hands moved to cup her face. He held still and closed his eyes as his lips took her mouth. Right then and there, she knew with crystal clarity this was real. This was the weight of a real man on top of her, clothed. He smelled citrusy and freshly laundered. What in the hell is this?

How did he get here? He was only her dream lover.

Or was he?

Confused beyond all comprehension, Lark didn’t have any time to contemplate a single thing. His lips delivered a breath-stealing, soul-shattering kiss, and then they were all over each other. This, ah, this she knew. Lark hooked her ankle over his, put a hand on his shoulder, and tried to rid him of his jacket as she drew him closer. She fisted his hair as he devoured her mouth. He braced himself on the weight of his hands above her, his bright green eyes bearing into hers. His face was the face of her dreams—the sensual bowed lips and cleft chin, the built body, and the thick hair. His hair… She blinked. His hair was cut at the nape and styled for a day at work. She glanced at his clothes.

“Um, why are you wearing a suit and tie this time?” She squinted against the sunlight. Please, God, let this be a dream. He moved his head and put her in shade.

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.

He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.

Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.

And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe,but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.

Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolveable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.

He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.

“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”

Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.

“There you are, darling!”  Nik swooped in, handing her a glass of wine.  “I’m so sorry I’m late.  Will you ever forgive me?”  He wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her cheek.

Stunned, Petey stammered a bit.  “Um, yes.  Well…darling, yes, you certainly are late.  What’s up with that?  I’ve been waiting for you.”

“I know.  But traffic was a nightmare, what with the rain.  You just wouldn’t believe it.”  Nik turned to Howard.  “Who’s your friend?”  He smiled pleasantly at the confused man.

“Oh, sorry.  Nik, this is Howard.  Howard, meet Nik.”

Howard worked his mouth, but was blissfully silent.

Nik reached to shake his hand.  “So nice to meet you.  If you’ll excuse us, I need to make up for lost time.  Come, darling.”

He grasped Petey’s hand and led her to the opposite side of the gallery.  When they reached a quiet corner, he turned and smiled at her.

She gave a relieved laugh.  “Oh, my God, for the second time tonight, you saved my bacon.”

Nik laughed, too.  “The exasperation on your face said that you needed rescuing.  Who was he anyway?”

“Some guy that my friend Jules thought I should meet.  I mean, he’s nice enough, but he had absolutely no sense of personal space.  And he would notstop talking.  Sheesh!”

“He’s probably just shy in the presence of such a pretty woman.”  Nik’s blue eyes sparkled.

Petey rolled her eyes.  “Yes, I’m sure that’s it,” she said sarcastically.  “I guess you ditched your business dinner?”

Nik nodded. “I did.”

She eyed him curiously.  “What kind of business are you in?”

He paused a beat.  “I’m in international finance and development.”

Warmth flooded her face, and she knew she was blushing.  A sheepish smile curled her lips.  “I have no idea what that means.”

He smiled, too.  “I travel and meet with business people, mostly, occasionally politicians, and we discuss ways to improve our national economies, and ways to assist developing economies as well.”

“Oh.  I’m sure Jules would understand completely.  She has a sharp business mind.  I’m just so,” she gave a self-deprecating chuckle, “right-brained.”

She fanned herself lightly with her hand.  “So, you’d had enough of finances and development for one night?”

Nik nodded agreeably.  “I’ve worked all day.  As I sat listening to more business conversation, all I could think was that I’d like to attend the gallery opening of a promising young sculptor.”

Petey’s eyes sparkled mischievously.  “Well, if I hear of any, I’ll let you know.”  They both laughed together.

“I just watched your video.  Such an interesting way to introduce yourself to patrons.”

“Oh, that.”  Petey blushed.  “Jules flew out to Montana a couple of months ago.  She hired a film crew to follow me for a day, do interviews and stuff.  Then they just put it together.”

He regarded her curiously, eyes sparkling.  “What are the chances you’d give me a guided tour of this incredible exhibit?”

She pretended to consider his request.  “Well, you did see to it that I was put back together after being blasted by that tidal wave.   And, you rescued me from being talked to death by a close-talking dentist.  I’d say your odds are pretty good.”  She laughed.  “I think bringing me a glass of wine put you over the top, though.”

Nik laughed, too.  “Lucky for me, then.”

“Lucky for you.  Okay, let’s take a tour.”

Marlee shifted on her seat. She tapped her fingers against the table, but she would not look at him. Was Marlee finally beginning to see the holes in Saul’s story?

“I have a copy of the signed statement in which Saul goes into great detail about Marion having terminal cancer. I can show it to you if you like.”

“I need to get Max home.” But she made no move to leave. Instead, she rubbed her hands along her thighs and sank her teeth into her lower lip. Her foot started to tap beneath the table. “There’s been a lot to take in. I need to process what I’ve learned tonight.”

She dragged herself to her feet. As she crossed to his bed, her steps were short and jerky. She turned to face him. He wanted to tell her not to go. Instead, he pressed his lips together.

“If I have questions, can I call you?”

Devon nodded. He retrieved his wallet and withdrew his card. She took it immediately.

Saul Moore had seemingly kept his head down and had stayed out of trouble for forty years. There’d been no reported unexplained deaths in or around Burrawang Bend. But Devon was in town to poke the bear. And an angry bear was a dangerous one.

“Marlee, I can’t tell you what to do, but I can ask you to be careful. Think twice if you’re going to confront him with what you’ve learned tonight.”

Devon stood at the door and watched Marlee and Max drive into the darkness. What was she heading to? Was she going to confront Saul with what she had learned?

He reached for his mobile and dialed Annie. She answered on the second ring. “Get a pair of eyeballs on Marlee Moore.”

“Why? What’s going on?”

“I think she may have just realized her grandfather is a murderer.”

Nowhere to Hide by Louise Lyndon is an exciting adult romantic suspense story set in Australia and centering around the conflict between Marlee Moore, the mother of a young boy, and Devon Reilly, the acclaimed investigative journalist who is determined to prove that her grandfather killed her grandmother. As a former Australian Federal Police officer, Devon has the skill and the drive to solve many cold cases, but Marlee and her son Max threaten to make him change his priorities, until circumstances change and lives are endangered, reminding both adults why they keep their hearts guarded and their lives free of encumbrances.

This story is the first in the ‘Justice Served’ series and provides an exotic backdrop to a thrilling and sometimes erotic tale with plenty of violence and tragedy. There are so many unexpected aspects to this story that I was a bit conflicted about how to frame my review. I was surprised to suddenly discover Devon’s kinky side and Marlee’s response seemed a bit uncharacteristic to me, and then his actions seem inconsistent throughout the story. The painful background that prompts Devon’s attitude toward relationships and his subsequent expertise and heightened protectiveness seemed to conflict with his actions as his family arrives unexpectedly, and Marlee’s traumatic background is also gut-wrenching but makes one wonder about genetic implications—which one would have thought would have colored her interactions with her grandfather.

I was surprised by a vicious struggle and sudden twist that came relatively early in the story, thinking things were going to resolve quickly, but then more complications were thrown into the mix and the story goes onto even more scary heights but only after there are both sensual interludes between the main characters and touching interactions between a man who has walled himself off and a young boy who is delighted to find a male role model. Given the sometimes uneven action and motivations, and the disappointing response displayed by Devon toward the end, I was frustrated with the guy, but I was relieved that a resolution was found. Little Max stole the show, and I just loved the scene that details the big alpha male learning to deal with a poopy two-year-old. I think this book would be enjoyed by those who like gritty suspenseful tales featuring complicated characters who aren’t perfect but are willing to try to improve.
