GENRE:  Historical Fantasy

BLURB:

Gypsum, the sixth of seven sisters, has always been a rebel. Yet no one thought she would go so far as to join the reczavy, a group living in tents on the edge of the desert and known for their sexual promiscuity and playful ways.

But as the date of the Mongols’ return draws near, Ilarians of all types must work together if they are to have any hope of surviving. And the reczavy, for all of their odd ways, do have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Well, up their sleeves whenever they are bothering to wear clothes, that is.

Gypsum is touched when her oldest sister Ryalgar comes to call, and brings an olive branch with her. Ryalgar recognizes that the reczavy have as much to lose as anyone, and as much to contribute. Will Gypsum accept a key role in the plan to stop the invasion? Of course she will.

Unfortunately, her playmates don’t all feel the same sense of urgency. Many would rather simply enjoy the time they have left. A few claim to be allergic to long term planning. And some are too busy with their own poorly-timed plans to overthrow the government Ilari already has.

Good thing needlepoint is the one traditional skill at which Gypsum has always excelled. She will need to thread a fine needle in order to coax this recalcitrant group into becoming life-saving warriors of a very different kind.

Curled up naked beside him on his lumpy bed, I learned of the ill-advised pranks that forced him to change schools. Stupid things. I thought his school over-reacted until I learned his closest friend received no punishment at all.

“They decided I had to be the bad influence. Best to get rid of me, you know? Probably shouldn’t have let me in to begin with…”

“Because your name is Sheep Scump?” Despite my joke, I sat up, indignant for him.

He sat up as well, and wrapped a blanket around both of our shoulders.

“No. Because my friend has a father who teaches there. They look out for their own.”

Maybe this wasn’t the time to tell him my father taught also.

“Your parents weren’t inclined to intervene on your behalf?” I saw the displeasure on his face before I finished the sentence. “Wait. I remember. They don’t care that you’re in school.”

“Oh, they care; they just don’t care which one. Anything that keeps me from herding goats pisses them off.”

I only knew one place in Ilari where goat herding was common. I scooted away from him without thinking.

“You’re an Edser?”

“Yes.” He met my gaze with a look saying you want make something of it?

I didn’t. Edsers were known for being cranky, intolerant, and ignorant. So far Sheep Scump had only shown signs of crankiness. I didn’t want to encourage it.

“So. You’re an unusual Edser who wants an education.”

“I thought I did. And what are you? The cherished daughter of a  …”

I interrupted him. “Don’t go there. I’m not a cherished anything. I’m the sixth daughter of wheat farmers, and I’m the child both parents wish had never been born.”

My eyes met his. Top that they said.

My review:

4.25 out of 5 stars

“She’s the One Who Won’t Behave” by S.R. Cronin is Book 6 of ‘The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters’ series and features Gypsum, the sixth of the seven sisters. Her ongoing discomfort with her place in the family and lack of connection to her mother, plus the relationship she forms with a fellow student she affectionately calls Sheep Scump, leads her on an adventure she never would have dreamed of. Her habit of imbuing her needlework with a sentiment morphs into an amazing journey of self-realization and bolsters her self-appointed task of finding a way to help oppose the invasion of the Mongols. Like her sisters, Gypsum has hidden depths, and her refusal to be forced into the expectations of others will make her into a force to be reckoned with.

This intricately plotted fantasy portrays a massive, world-changing invasion as seen and reacted to by seven very different sisters. The excellent world building allows the reader to clearly picture the various factions that must learn to cooperate in order to defeat their common enemy. Gypsum’s frustration, both with her family and with those who are vital to resist the usurpation of their part of the world, comes through clearly and vividly.

I enjoyed watching Gypsum as she navigates life and grows into her role and into self-acceptance. The unfolding of her relationships as she learns to search for the truth rather than just accepting what she is being told is inspirational and compelling, and I was fascinated by the way I changed my opinion about some of the characters as I learned more about their motives and backgrounds.

The stories in this series explore the various aspects of love…romantic, patriotic, and familial. Gypsum’s journey requires that she learn certain truths, but also that she finds a way to gently bend and coax rather than demand. Although this is part of a series, I think one could read it without having read any of the other stories because there are recaps of major events, but it is even better savored when one learns more details about the adventures the other sisters are having. Even though I haven’t read all of the stories prior to this one, I had no trouble becoming immersed in the struggles and adventures portrayed in this tale.

I like the mixture of pragmatism and the mystical as well as the life lessons that are portrayed, and I look forward to learning more about the last sister.

Growling, a hound ventured closer to Black Tail. The sow rushed him, and he twisted away. The pig grabbed his tail and stomped on him. Whirling on her hind legs, she whacked him against the rock, making a streak of blood as the carcass slid down.

"Blast. I didn't know pigs fought like that!" the peasant yelled when the dog lay lifeless.

"Stop her. You're the one who's supposed to have elf powers."

Renna unshadowed and stepped into the clearing, still holding her power tight inside her. The hoe, with its sharp metal blade, hung ready at her side. "Mayhap you might return to where you came from before my pig kills all your dogs."

"What's a little thing like you going to do against two grown men, girlie?" The bumpkin sneered after one glance at her in her grimy clothes. "I'm a trained warrior from Linden's camp—better get on your way, like a good little lamb."

With a heft of the hoe, Renna asked, "You want to find out how dainty I am?"

The guard's hand rested on his plain belt, but he made no move. Her warrior's braid hanging to the hem of her patched tunic should have been sign enough of her power, Renna thought. She seldom wore her veteran's belt decorated with many gold insignia earned during the Rebellion that would have alerted them to trouble if she were in the habit of wearing the heavy thing.

He's right. I am alone.

EXCERPT

The brigands never showed up. The Svadlu concluded the thieves had seen soldiers moving in to protect the school and had elected to flee the realm with the little they’d stolen from a few farms in Gruen the day before. At any rate, after an afternoon of hiding in the hay, we were allowed to come out.

Davor sent most of his soldiers back to Pilk, leaving a few to stand guard through the night.

“Do all the children return home each day?” he asked.

“Most do. A few stay over for various reasons. We teachers take turns spending the night with any left behind. With winter here, more will stay. In bad weather, the barn is nearly full and all the teachers remain. Why?”

“I wondered if perhaps you’d be spending the night?”

“Not tonight.”

“Oh. So does a new husband expect you home soon?”

“I’m single, sir.” I felt the flush in my cheeks at his question. Of the seven girls in my family, I’d been the one cursed with flaming hair no one could ignore and a fair skin that turned warm and pink at the slightest embarrassment. “I live with my parents. My family never knows whether to expect me or not, given the situation.” I tried to force the heat back out of my cheeks.

“I see.” His smile widened. “I travel with a tent befitting my station. I know it would be a tad peculiar, but under the circumstances, could a Mozdol of the realm offer a beautiful young woman…,” at this he reached out and ran his fingers through my silky orange hair “… a toast to her bravery and her assistance during a difficult situation?”

A Mozdol? This man was more than a soldier, more than an officer. I’d been flirting with an honorary prince of the realm, a fighter who’d received this high honor for his bravery in battle. Oh my.

My heart skipped a beat. I looked closer. He was years older than I, his skin weathered by time in the sun. He was stocky and strong, although a bit short for a man. He had a full head of gorgeous shiny black hair, though, and dark eyes that spoke of mystery. I liked him.

“Well, sir …”

My review:

4.25 stars

“She’s the One Who Cares Too Much” by S.R. Cronin is Book 2 of ‘The War Stories of Seven Troublesome Sisters’ series and centers on Coral, the sister who discovers that she may find a way to be of benefit in her sister Ryalgar’s defense plan against the potential of invading Mongols. Coral’s courtship by a warrior prince provides a way for her to leave the family home, but complications change their relationship and force Coral to examine what she wants to accomplish with her life. But first she has to survive long enough to make that decision.

This historical fantasy continues the saga of a people who discover that their best defense against a potential invasion of their country, Ilari, is learning to work together and change their preconceived notions to allow them to think outside of the box. Fair warning…this book, just like its predecessor, ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. This story is told from the perspective of Carol, who has been content to live at home and teach children even as her eldest sister has left home to join with a mysterious group of women who live in the forest.

Although this can be read as a stand-alone story, especially if one reads the glossary in the back to learn more about the various aspects of this world and some of its inhabitants, the tale will be savored better if one has read “She’s the One Who Thinks Too Much” first. The world-building is intricate and provides excellent realism, and both the major and minor conflicts are depicted in such a way as to keep the reader invested and cheering for the heroine and those who are important to her. There are plenty of dangling threads (and five other sisters who need their time in the spotlight), but the story also completes a satisfying arc about Coral’s life. I look forward to learning more about the various talents in the family and discovering what other feats of ingenuity reflect the increased power that is amassed by lots of individuals working toward a common cause.

EXCERPT

Taking several minutes to convince myself that the only way is forward, I stand again and insert the three rubies into the matching three holes in the floor. Is that my heart beating, or some noise coming off the walls?

Hard-knocking clicks begin deep below my feet, like giant metallic cogs revolving under the floor. A grating noise accompanies, the sound moving up to the very stone I’m standing on.

I scramble back, jumping on the altar as if I’ll be safe there if the floor falls away.

The sound stops.

My heart shakes my ribcage like a prisoner wanting out of his cell. Nothing has changed in the chamber, but I don’t move. I hear another sound. A thumping. It’s coming from beneath the floor so quietly, I only hear it because I’m holding my breath.

Fear prickles through my body, but I can’t convince myself to run. Transfixed, I stare, even though I’m aware that whatever is coming up might do me harm. I draw Reuben’s bone-handled knife, planting my feet, determined to know what I came here for, what purpose stealing the two pieces of the keys had, whether Reuben’s death was worth it, and whether I’ve just released the monster Cuthbert warned me about.

The thumping rises higher and higher.

I grit my teeth, clench my knife. Reflexes on fire, I’m tensed and ready to spring, ready to run, ready to fight.

The sound stops. The trapdoor flies open with a crash on the floor.

A human arm reaches out.

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

The Foes Between Us by J.M Robison is the first book in ‘The Last Wizard’ series and follows Zadicayn and Brynnella as they navigate the challenges of determining how magic will fit into a society that seeks to eradicate it.

This fantasy story is imaginative and intriguing, but one should be aware that it is definitely the first book in a series, therefore there are a lot of dangling threads and a bit of a cliffhanger at the end. The author does a great job of establishing a complex world seen through the eyes of two very different characters, and I formed a connection to each of them very quickly and winced at their respective experiences. The alternate version of historical British society is fascinating, especially with respect to the chastity-enforcing clothing (shudder), as is the explanation of the way magic works.

It would be nice to have a little more depth with respect to some of the secondary characters, but hopefully that will evolve as the series continues. I tend to be frustrated by cliffhangers, so I hope the next book in the series will be released relatively quickly, as I am anxious to see how matters unfold. This book should appeal to fans who like fantasy stories featuring quests, mysterious prisoners, magical creatures, and those who can manipulate magic.

Cloaked by Taylor Hobbs (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by author (and WRP Rose) Taylor Hobbs, who shares...
(and thank you and your family for your sacrifice and service)

Why minimalism makes me a better writer

by
Taylor Hobbs

Even before deciding to live on a 38-foot sailboat, I'd been obsessed with the idea of minimalism. I came across tiny houses first, and was enchanted with not only their obvious adorableness, but the lifestyle that inevitably accompanied them. Subscribers to the idea of a ‘less is more’ philosophy accumulate time and freedom instead of material goods. Deciding to pare down and declutter to achieve our liveaboard dream has led to a more family-focused and creativity-driven life.

We have only what we need. I don't like decorations or knick knacks, and I avoid Etsy. Stuff is just stuff, and letting go of it all helped me achieve an inner peace. The lightening of baggage was both physical and mental, and encouraged a clean slate. A blank page. Once most of our belongings were gone, I felt like I could take my life story any direction I chose. As a writer, this attitude also transferred over to my novels.

My new day-to-day routine changed my creative headspace. It was freeing to have a limited wardrobe and not wonder what I should wear. I could walk through department stores without stopping for an impulse buy. Grocery store trips were pre-planned to make sure everything fit in our little fridge. When we had our baby (yes, we have a baby on our boat!), we kept it simple with a few basic necessities on the registry. When the possibility of ‘extras’ went away, I didn’t even see them anymore. Instead of concentrating on the thousands of distractions that bombarded me every day, I had so much more time and brain energy to focus on my writing.

One of the bonus aspects of minimalism is an increased appreciation for experiences and relationships. By being unencumbered with excuses and able to say yes to adventure, real-life inspiration for my writing hits me from every direction. When I focus on enriching my relationships with family and friends, my characters also benefit. Motive, dialog, and backstory surround me and help to fully develop my heroes. With so much to draw from, writer’s block is no longer an issue.

Not every writer has to take it to my extreme, but if you find you’ve hit a wall in your life, creative or otherwise, I’d like you to try a few things. Clean up your writing desk. Organize your closet. Hold a garage sale. Donate. Let go of just a few of the many items you’ve been holding onto for years, they will find new purpose with other families that need it. Baby steps toward improving your physical environment might shake some of the cobwebs free and allow you to look at your life, or your novel, with fresh eyes.

But no matter what philosophy you adhere to, minimalism or otherwise, I hope it helps you find joy and appreciation for living in the now.

EXCERPT

“Please, whatever you are,” Henry begged, “don't hurt us. Please.”

There was no answer, but Charlotte heard the rustle of fabric and a felt a light breeze on her skin as the shadow whisked by her. She whirled around to face the cell across from Henry's. Through the haze of her torchlight circle, Charlotte watched as the shadow knelt down, freeing a hand holding a key from the depths of a long, black cloak. With the telltale rasp of iron on iron, the door to the other cell creaked open.

The stranger crept soundlessly inside, returning seconds later with a body slung over its shoulders. The body emitted a low groan, and the shadow lowered its burden to lean against the wall. With unexpected care, the shadow crouched over the emaciated prisoner and murmured softly to him.

Seeing this spark of humanity gave Charlotte the courage she needed. “Help us.” It was a statement, not a question.

The cloaked figure remained kneeling next to its charge, and a man's voice finally spoke in a low rumble. “But you have nothing to offer me.”

Charlotte hesitated at his unexpected statement, trying to decipher its meaning. “Free my brother, and you can have anything you want.”
