Excerpt:

“I’m so glad we were down here, Milo.” Cameron blinked a few times, as if she couldn’t believe what she saw. “She could’ve been killed.”

“No. She would’ve protected her head.”

I tried. How did he know?

Milo still held her shoulders, and now his fingers were making tiny circles above her shoulder blades. “We saw you in here and were coming in so I could introduce the two of you.”

“Nice to meet you, Cameron.” Gracie nodded. “I’m bleeding? Where?”

Milo took her hands before she realized she was moving them toward her face. “It’s not bad. Let’s go inside. I’ll fix you up.”

Cameron followed them. “Milo was a corpsman in the Navy. He knows what he’s doing. When I sprained my ankle a few years ago, he took care of it.”

“I don’t usually meet people like this,” Gracie said.

“Yeah she does.” Milo still held her hands in one of his.

Gracie turned to make a face at him. The quick movement made the ground wobble. “Whoa. I’m a little dizzy.”

“That’s all right.” Milo put his free arm around her waist. “You won’t fall.”

How was this happening? She was always the one in control. The person in charge. Yet Milo had stepped up when she needed someone, and she didn’t mind. That was it—she didn’t mind. She always minded when she lost control of a situation. Maybe I have a concussion.

Milo held onto her and led her out of the garage. He glanced at her car. “I like your new Jeep.”

Excerpt:

Twenty minutes later, Gracie parked at Papito’s. It was mid-afternoon and not many cars were in the lot. Two servers were working, neither of them Dee Shepherd. The bartender looked lonely, so Gracie went over and sat on a stool.

He smiled. One of his front teeth was chipped, and it gave him a watch-this-y’all look. “What can I get for you?”

“Guacamole and a club soda with lime.” She’d never noticed him before, but she and Nick, her former SAPD partner, never sat at the bar, either.

“Coming up.” He entered her order on the register and placed the ticket face down in front of her. A few seconds later, he returned with her club soda.

She raised the clear plastic bubble-filled glass. “Cheers.”

He grinned. “Wish all my customers were as easy as you.”

“I’m not always easy. You just caught me on a good day.”

“I’ll remember that.”

Someone from the kitchen wearing a paper hat and an apron brought her guacamole.

“Thanks.”

He nodded and beat a hasty retreat, but not before she saw the prison ink on his hand and arm. The barkeep sliced limes about a foot from her food. They smelled delicious.

Gracie stuck her fork into the guacamole, her mouth already watering. “You know this is some of the best guac around, right?”

“That’s what I hear. I don’t really like avocados, so I haven’t tried it.”

“You should. It’s good enough to change your mind.”

“I’ll remember that, too.”

Nick was talking to a patrol officer who left when Gracie joined him. She poked his arm. “Did you do a full check on all the furniture?”

She got the look—a probe clear to the soles of her feet by two deep brown eyes searching for her brain.

Nick was five-ten, and she was two inches shorter. They stood almost eyeball to eyeball, although she may have outweighed him by ten pounds, given her strong farm-girl bones and ample girly parts. One of which delighted in squirrelling away every single bite of anything sweet that passed between her lips.

“Do you think I forgot how to be a cop just because you left?” Nick placed his hands on his hips, daring her to give him any guff.

“Mea culpa.”

He gave her a one-armed hug. “I forgot you’re such a pain in the ass. Hard to forget the klutzy parts, though. I still have scars. Ready to go?”

They would always be partners—even though it wasn’t official. Just like with Neva, Gracie and Nick had bonded through those early years of academy and patrol.

Nick stayed quiet on the way to his pickup. He opened the passenger door. “Get in. I want you to listen to this call, too.”

Inside the truck, Gracie touched his hand. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I can’t figure out why someone would want them dead. He never hurt anybody.”
