Revealed, plus Kalona's Fall by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast (reviews)

These books are from a very entertaining young adult vampire series, that started with the novel, Marked   I have included the covers of the first two below, but there are lots more for your reading pleasure if you are new to the series.  The second title reviewed below probably would be best appreciated once you have gotten into the series a bit, that way you can get a feel for the characters.

Revealed by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast is part of the ‘House of Night’ series that centers around a group of young vampyres who have dealt with a considerable amount of upheaval that results in some startling revelations. Just as they are trying to recover, evil regroups and strikes a serious blow which not only results in two unexpected deaths, but prompts humans to try to interfere with the vampyres’ autonomy. Zoey is learning to wield her powers as High Priestess and her friends Aphrodite and Stevie Rae are also settling into their roles but emotions and past ties threaten to upset the fragile equilibrium that has been established and the House of Night may be unable to recover from the attacks which are escalating against them.

This new adult paranormal series is written by a wonderfully talented mother-daughter team who have created a fascinatingly textured universe with humans and vampyres coexisting. The youngsters in this particular corner of the world have experienced extreme highs and lows that mirror the history of their Goddess, and death and betrayal has sabotaged their path but has not prevented them from gradually beginning to mature into their roles. This was a great blend of a recap of Neferet’s journey and the metamorphosis of the Tulsa House of Night, even as major forces start shifting the balance of power. Familiarity with the series is important, as each story builds on the one before, and it was especially intriguing to learn about Neferet’s history after reading about the history of Kalona, Erebus and Nyx in “Kalona’s Fall”. An exciting addition to a series that blends age-old issues such as greed, jealousy and envy, with traditional elements of mythology in a modern twist that intrigues and entertains, with a startling cliffhanger that makes one anxious to read more in the series.

Kalona's Fall, written by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast and illustrated by Aura Dalian, depicts the history behind the formation of the Gods, Goddesses, and Fey, and the evolution of events which resulted in the formation of humans and eventually, the Nightkind. The tale of Nyx and her complicated relationship with Erebus and Kalona is described as patterns of mistrust and betrayal set the stage for the eons of conflict to follow.

This intriguing introduction to the mythology that underlies the vampyre society that is part of the ‘House of Night’ series provides a fascinating perspective of some of the key characters. The twist on certain aspects of traditional mythology and the events that gradually unfold holds one spellbound as events build to the inevitable conclusion that one knows is coming yet can do nothing to prevent. It was amazing to get a sympathetic view of a tortured individual and enlightening to see what transpired to cause this. A great and informative addition to the series.

In His Keeping by Maya Banks (VBT, review, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) Tasty Book Tours (ADULT title)

In His Keeping  is an ADULT title
Slow Burn #2
By: Maya Banks
Releasing January 27th, 2015
Avon Romance

Blurb
#1 bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and steamy Slow Burn trilogy with this second book-a twisting tale featuring a strong yet vulnerable heroine in danger and the sexy alpha hero who must save her.

Abandoned as a baby to a young wealthy couple and raised in a world of privilege, Arial has no hint of her past or who she belonged to. Her only link lies in the one thing that sets her apart from everyone else—telekinetic powers. Protected by her adoptive parents and hidden from the public to keep her gift secret, Ari is raised in the lap of luxury, and isolation. That is, until someone begins threatening her life.

Beau Devereaux is no stranger to the strange. As the head of Deveraux Security, he’s more than familiar with the realities of physic powers. So when a family friend approaches him about protecting his daughter, he’s more than ready to jump on board. What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.

Excerpt:

Gavin had always had an understanding for what money and power could achieve, but it wasn’t until Arial, the name they’d chosen for their precious baby girl, that he fully appreciated or felt there was a purpose for the wealth he’d accumulated his entire adult life. As though he’d always been preparing for something so important. In the moment that innocent baby girl had arrived on their doorstep, he’d known that his wealth would finally serve a greater purpose.

It had all come down to this and to what he had been able to provide his wife—and now his daughter.

Ari was theirs. There was a paper trail he’d meticulously crafted documenting his wife’s pregnancy and the fact that after so many miscarriages he’d taken her away and kept her in com- plete isolation and privacy to give birth to their daughter.

A birth certificate listing date of birth, his and Ginger’s names as the parents, even the small clinic he funded where she’d been “born.”

Now, for the first time, they were returning to the United States with their daughter, assured that Ari’s past was airtight. That all the i’s were dotted and t’s crossed. All they had to do was resume their lives, but even with the confidence that Ari’s past was unshakable, Gavin wasn’t fool enough to ever even think about relaxing his guard. Their lives would be forever al- tered, and he didn’t have a single regret for the changing course of their destinies. He had all a man could ever hope for—wish for. It was all finally his, a fact he gave thanks for every single day since that snowy Christmas night when Ari had entered their lives.

He’d carefully explained to Ginger the changes to their lives that would occur, that they would have to exercise complete caution in every aspect of their day-to-day lives. He’d worried that Ginger would feel imprisoned, that she’d grow tired of liv- ing such an isolated existence, but he should have known that his wife—like him—would do anything at all to protect their daughter.

An unbreakable bond had been formed that night when Ari had been left on their doorstep. It was inexplicable and instantaneous, as if she’d always been meant to be theirs. And that bond had only strengthened until neither of them could remember their lives before Ari was a part of their family.

The very first thing Gavin had done in his preparation to return to the United States was to quietly sell his house in Con- necticut, because he wanted no trace of their past before Ari. No chance of Ari’s mother showing back up at the same place she’d left her baby, asking for her back.

He’d systematically worked during the months they were out of the country to remove them from the public eye. He’d sold off several of his businesses and invested the proceeds so that his family would always be secure.

He’d bought a huge home under a dummy corporation that could never be traced back to him and made sure that the secu- rity was impenetrable. And then he’d worked to turn it into Gin- ger’s dream home. A place she would love and wouldn’t be upset over being confined to so much.

She laughingly told him that she had everything she could possibly ever want. A husband she loved and a daughter she adored. No sacrifice was too great for her if it meant keeping her family.

Seeing Ginger so happy for these last months had given Gavin a sense of purpose he’d never before experienced. After so much sorrow and loss, the woman he loved sparkled with life, love and laughter. Every day she delighted in discovering some- thing new about motherhood and their precious baby girl.

Gavin knew in his heart that there was nothing he wouldn’t do to protect them both. No price was too high to pay. No, he hadn’t done it cleanly or by the book. He should have notified the police and social services. And pursued adoption through the proper channels.

But he only had to look into his wife’s eyes as she stared at that tiny baby girl and he knew he could never risk losing their daughter by doing things the “right” way. He could live with his conscience and even live with his soul forever being damned just as long as Ginger was happy. He’d brave the fires of hell and the devil himself before ever being the cause of her eyes losing their shine.

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

In His Keeping by Maya Banks is part of the ‘Slow Burn’ series that combines exotic paranormal powers and thrilling romantic suspense.  This particular story centers around Arial (Ari) Rochester, who suddenly needs to utilize the remarkable psychic powers that she has had minimal experience developing.  Danger results in her contacting Beau Devereaux, and enlisting the help of his security agency, but has the unexpected result of her discovering ties to the Devereaux family that neither realized existed.  Unfortunately, since threats escalate and threaten both of their respective families, they may not have the time or luxury of exploring the relationship and seeing where it can lead, unless Ari learns to harness her abilities in a hurry and survives long enough to do so.

This imaginative tale combines wondrous concepts of the potential use of extraordinary mental abilities with an exciting suspenseful story that follows the age-old struggle between good and evil.  Although the opening is a little slow and the writing not quite as crisp as I have come to expect due to the exciting ‘KGI’ series , the action eventually begins to intensify and develops into the delicious combination of sizzling intimacy and exciting fight scenes that characterize this author’s works.  The heroine was a bit irksome to me at first, as I prefer proactive and capable females, but she grew nicely during the course of the story.  I was able to read this work as a stand-alone, although I am sure that it would be helpful to learn the story behind the events alluded to that center around a couple of the secondary characters, who have a cameo in this book.  The villains are a little nebulous, but definitely evil, and I suspect that there is an underlying threat that will tie the entire series together.  I am always fascinated by the concept of psychic phenomena, and the differing abilities described add a nice twist to this fun read which celebrates romance and adventure, and I look forward to reading more about the Devereaux family and the mates who change their lives.

Forged By Desire by Bec McMaster (review)

Forged by Desire by Bec McMaster is part of the exciting ‘London Steampunk’ series and centers on newly promoted Garrett Reed, who is acting Master of the Nighthawks. His relationship with the mysterious and capable Perry has shifted recently, as she has ceased to be simply the lethal and rare female blue blood he has been attuned with for so long but has become both alluring and essential to his equanimity, as he struggles to cope with both his new duties and the insidious increase of his craving virus (CV) levels to dangerous heights. A threat from Perry’s past triggers a cascade of events that are complicated even more by a brutal serial killer and may prompt the restructuring of society, and not in a good way.

This wonderfully textured and fascinating story combines steampunk and vampire precepts in a winning mixture. The evocation of historical England as it flourishes with the inventiveness of the burgeoning industrial age using steam, gears and other mechanical advances is artfully interwoven with a deliciously chilling imagining of a race that has suppressed humanity and forced it into a vehicle to supply blood and labor. This is the first book I have read in this series, yet I was drawn into the world effortlessly and mesmerized by the color and action that is evoked with this story that combines exciting sword fights, creative (and sometimes creepy) inventions, and stomach-clenching and emotional conundrums. This can be read as a stand-alone, but it definitely will engender a desire to read more about the intriguing characters that populate this world and I definitely have added a new name to my favorite authors list!

In Your Wildest Scottish Dreams by Karen Ranney (interview, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) Tasty Book Tours

It is my very great pleasure to have a 'self-interview' from the delightful Karen Ranney.  She has a great blog that I follow regularly, and I have enjoyed many of her titles over the years.

Here's Karen...

Five Questions I’ve Never Been Asked

What are my biggest fears as a writer?

That the words will dry up. Since I have an opinion about everything, and my imagination is still going strong, that doesn’t seem likely.

What’s my greatest triumph as a writer?

When someone tells me their book got them through hard times. Seriously, isn’t that the greatest compliment?

Have you ever had trouble getting out of the way as a writer?

I think writing must be like what an actor feels. When I’m “in character” I’m not me. I’m the character. I think like the character. I respond like the character. I don’t have a problem pushing Karen Ranney aside. She lives beneath (which sounds like a great premise for a horror novel, doesn’t it?).

Has a character ever refused to do what you want him to do?

See the above question and answer. If I’m truly “in character”, Karen Ranney has no part in the process. Whatever the character wants to do is fine. And I’ve “been” some strange characters in the past.

A character is not a reflection of the author’s secret self. If authors only write about “nice” people, it would make for very boring books. I remember when I wrote about a truly vile character and was excoriated for years. Again, a character is not a reflection of the author’s secret self.

Why don’t you have a favorite book?

Here’s a confession: because I don’t remember a book the minute it’s in print form. I never read it in print form. I don’t remember the characters. I don’t recall much of the plot, and I certainly don’t remember names and places. I’ve had some darling readers ask me about a character from a book I wrote ten years ago. I have no clue who they’re talking about.

The only difference is when I’m writing a series, and the only series I’m interested in lately are trilogies. I truly think most series go on too long, and I like things that happen in threes. In a series, I write a “bible” of who’s what, where, when, and other important things I need to remember. Otherwise, I’m sure it would disappear just like every other book.

I guess my favorite book is the one I’m writing now. At least I remember that book.

In Your Wildest Scottish Dreams
The MacIain Trilogy #1
By: Karen Ranney
Releasing January 27th, 2015
Avon Romance

Blurb

New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney's first novel in a brand-new series spins the intriguing story of a beautiful widow and a devilishly handsome shipbuilder...

Seven years have passed since Glynis MacIain made the foolish mistake of declaring her love to Lennox Cameron, only to have him stare at her dumbfounded. Heartbroken, she accepted the proposal of a diplomat and moved to America, where she played the role of a dutiful wife among Washington's elite. Now a widow, Glynis is back in Scotland. Though Lennox can still unravel her with just one glance, Glynis is no longer the naïve girl Lennox knew and vows to resist him.

With the American Civil War raging, shipbuilder Lennox Cameron must complete a sleek new blockade runner for the Confederate Navy. He cannot afford any distractions, especially the one woman he's always loved. Glynis's cool demeanor tempts him to prove to her what a terrible mistake she made seven years ago.

As the war casts its long shadow across the ocean, will a secret from Glynis's past destroy any chance for a future between the two star-crossed lovers?

Excerpt:

“Are you very experienced, Lennox?”

He smiled but didn’t answer her. She wanted to press him but it didn’t seem at all proper to ask how many women he’d loved right at the moment.

“I should hire you out to the Americans. They could use you as a weapon in their war. All you have to do is look at the women of America and they’d fall swooning at your feet."

His laugh made her smile.

She took his hand and pressed it against her breast where he could feel the pounding beat of her heart.

The pleasure had splintered her, making her moan aloud.

More than I have ever felt. More than I ever imagined. Until tonight I hadn’t known it was possible to feel this way. I had not even dreamed my soul could go spinning among the stars and I would be left here, to be reborn again by the sight of your smile.

How did she say that?

She was so filled with emotion she could barely speak. Why hadn't she seduced him seven years ago?

He was so kissable she had to cup his face with one hand and move her mouth to his.

The world slid away like a silk chemise.

He tasted wonderful, his tongue moving deep. She opened her mouth wider, welcoming and willing.

Long moments later she pulled back to find Lennox smiling at her.

Karen Ranney began writing when she was five. Her first published work was The Maple Leaf, read over the school intercom when she was in the first grade. In addition to wanting to be a violinist (her parents had a special violin crafted for her when she was seven), she wanted to be a lawyer, a teacher, and, most of all, a writer. Though the violin was discarded early, she still admits to a fascination with the law, and she volunteers as a teacher whenever needed. Writing, however, has remained the overwhelming love of her life.

Dare Sonia put her trust and faith in a man she hardly knows to secure Gaia's peace or will the continent's harmony be shattered forever?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Racing forward, he spotted her near Tapin's tents surrounded by three beasts. Tall and slender, she possessed a strong, wild beauty he found intriguing. Long chestnut brown hair flowed down her back. Her eyes were golden yellow with obsidian irises. She'd been bonded! Only the noble bonded. Her high, exotic cheekbones and patrician features were steeled in courage and determination. The primal urge to mate with her made his heart pound in his chest.
A falcon, the heraldic symbol of Tapin, was prominently displayed on her tunic.
A bird screeched. A wyldebeast craned its neck upward and the descending falcon
slashed its talons over the creature's face, spraying blood.
"Well done, Hiro!" exclaimed the woman.
A second wyldebeast lashed at her. She stumbled backwards, tripping on a rock. Her
wrist struck the ground hard, sending her sword sprawling several feet away from her, leaving her vulnerable.
"Draco, defend the Tapin noblewoman!"
Ivánstan's dragon, now overhead, shot a blast of flame from his mouth, scorching the fur of an advancing beast. The creature collapsed and rolled over, attempting to use the ground to extinguish the flames on its body.
The remaining wyldebeast raised his hand, its fingernails moist, poised to strike the noblewoman. Ivánstan lunged forward and sliced off the creature's wrist just inches in front of her face.
"Thank Nyla!" she cried.
The beast howled in pain and spun to face Ivánstan. Draco latched its thorny claws into the creature's shoulders, lifting it into the air.
My Review
The Green Rose by Stephanie Burkhart is a fantasy story that centers around a group of people who are drawn together by a threat to their respective kingdoms.  Each has a link to the creature that is characteristic of a particular realm, whether that be dragon, falcon, raven or jaguar.  A threat from a renegade mage and the ferocious wyldebeasts he directs, causes a reluctant alliance between Ivanstan, Crown Prince of Dhaka, and Sonia, Crown Princess of Tapin, as they seek to rescue their respective kidnapped sires.  They must learn to work together and find that they are able to surmount almost any obstacles if they do so, except possibly the difficulty of following their hearts over their duties.
This imaginative story is an entertaining look at a world that mixes magic and political machinations.  I would have suspected it was geared toward younger readers except that there are some nicely spicy romantic interludes sprinkled in with the journey undertaken by the main characters.  There are intriguing glimpses of the animal partners for the various individuals but I would have liked a little more exposition on the bonds and abilities of each particular species, especially the dragons, and perhaps a slightly more fleshed-out plot as the story itself was fairly predictable in places.  Nonetheless, I think this is a nice introduction to this world and a fun quick read.
Sinful Rewards #7 by Cynthia Sax ADULT title (Guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) Tasty Book Tours
This is an ADULT title
Sinful Rewards 7 – The Point Of No Return
by Cynthia Sax
It is my very great pleasure to have a guest post from the very talented Cynthia Sax...who shares her musings...
Have you ever taken a step and knew your life would be forever changed?
I played in business for decades before I took my writing career seriously (this is why I write about billionaire heroes – I’ve met some extremely sexy secret billionaires). When I started the transition, I took a business contract gig for six months, then wrote for three months, then took another business contract gig for six months. I had a foot in each career, could go either way if I wished.
I stopped taking contract gigs. For a year, I told myself I could go back to business if the writing didn’t work out. My skills were still current. There wasn’t that large of a gap on my resume.
At the twelve month point, I couldn’t fool myself any longer. If I continued to write, I’d be fully committed. I’d reached the point of no return. Today, although I hold onto my accounting designation, paying the annual fees, I’d find it difficult to land an equivalent position in business.
In Sinful Rewards, my sizzling hot contemporary erotic romance serial, Bee has been telling herself that her relationship with Hawke, her bad boy biker, is temporary, that it isn’t really affecting her relationship with Nicolas, her handsome billionaire. She’s been juggling the two men, balancing her time between them, keeping these two worlds separate and all of her options open.
This changes in Sinful Rewards 7. Bee is faced with a series of decisions, prompted by both men. She can’t push her choices forward any longer. There are to be no more delays. She has to decide now and what she decides will propel her over the point of no return.
Of course, no decision is completely irreversible. I could take entry level business positions, gradually working my way up to the level I enjoyed before focusing on my writing career. Bee could overturn her decisions also, find a way to redeem herself with the other man, to accept what she declines in Sinful Rewards 7.
But our situations won’t ever return to ‘normal’. I won’t have the same business career as I did previously. Bee won’t have the same relationships. What we’ve done will affect us. This might not be a bad thing. It will simply be different.
What have been some of your life changing decisions, decisions that pushed you forward, never to go back?
Sinful Rewards 7:
A Billionaires and Bikers Novella
By: Cynthia Sax
Releasing January 20th, 2015
Avon Romance
Blurb
Bee Carter has been offered everything she has ever dreamed of—a caring, lasting relationship with a handsome, often charming billionaire; the permanent home she's never had but has always craved; and wealth to buy the designer fashions she loves, support her hard-working mother, and ensure her acceptance by Chicago's elite.
To obtain what she's desired for so long, she has to do only two things: Walk away from her best friend, a woman who is destined to betray her … and end her passionate nightly encounters with a certain tattooed biker, a former Marine who can never give her what she needs.
Her answer should be clear, but the heart has a way of complicating even the most straightforward decisions.
Excerpt:
Forty minutes later, my brain is overflowing with military and biker speak. The guys joke and laugh, exchanging rather racy, sometimes extremely graphic, and horrifyingly violent stories. Several of the old ladies have joined us, sitting on their guys’ laps.
I shouldn’t fit in. I’m not dressed in black leather. I don’t sport any tatts or scars or excessive body hair. Eighty Proof, the bartender, sets another ginger ale and lime in front of me. I’m not drinking, don’t ride, haven’t served our country.
Yet they don’t seem to care. I’m one of them. My chest warms. I’m accepted, comfortable, and safe. I belong here.
A muscular arm hooks around my waist. A bolt of electric awareness flows from my form to the man’s large frame. I react this way to only one person. A smile curls my lips. “I almost gave up on you.”
“Liar.” Hawke laughs, the sound coiling deep in my stomach. “You were having a good time.” He pulls me snug against his muscle, his grip thrillingly secure. “And you’d never give up on me.” He presses his mouth to my neck and I tremble, his lips firm and hot, branding my skin. “You’re my girl.”
Why does that sound so right? I tilt my head to the side, giving him more access to me, encouraging him without words.
“Are you ready to go?” Hawke mouths against my earlobe, tormenting me with his slow seduction, his stubble leaving a delicious burn on my cheek.
I nod, unable to speak, my brain fried by our connection. This physical, emotional, spiritual link grows stronger with every touch. I have to walk away from him, to end this, while I still can.
Hawke flips me over and slings me across his right shoulder, the impact pushing the air from my lungs. “We’re leaving.” He slaps my ass, the sound loud, the contact titillating. The men cheer and my face heats.
“I have to stop being picked up at bars,” I muse, splaying my fingers over my abductor’s lower back, enthralled by his rippling muscles.
Hawke’s shoulders shake as he laughs. “You’re priceless, love.”
