Excerpt

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.

He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.

Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.

And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe, but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.

Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolvable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.

He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.

“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”

Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by the prolific and talented author Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin...

Hitting the Books for the Book

By Morgan Brice

Research is one of my favorite parts of writing. Every book requires some research--even if it's set in the present. Of course, since I write urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, I end up doing a lot of research on story elements--some of which are 'normal' and some which are definitely strange! Like most writers, I assume I'm on a lot of 'lists' for some of the things I search for on the Internet!

Whether I'm writing paranormal romance as Morgan or non-romance urban fantasy as Gail Z. Martin, I take the magical elements very seriously. I want to get the lore right. There is a large body of information based on many real-world magical traditions, and I not only want to get the details correct, but I also want to be respectful to those traditions, which are the belief systems of real people.

So I'm constantly looking up the reputed magical properties of plants, minerals, and other things. I look at the urban legends and the lore around different types of monsters. I study up on banishing spells and exorcisms. And if I'm incorporating monsters, I base them on actual legends and mythology.

Wherever a book is set, the location is important. I try to ground my books in the history, legends, scandals, landmarks and lore of its location so that the place becomes a character in its own right, and the story couldn't happen the same way anywhere else. Also, since these are real places, people actually live there, and they'll let me know if I get it wrong! So details matter. Sometimes I make the decision to change a name or create a fictional location based on a real person or place to preserve privacy or for legal reasons, but it's always anchored in research.

Research also helps me get unstuck. When I can't move forward on a story, I know it's because my brain knows I don't have all the pieces. Usually if I start researching and let one interesting thing lead me to another and another, I find the missing piece that I didn't even know to look for! It's a wonderful feeling, a little bit of 'magic' in itself!

Research is definitely part of the fun of writing. I get to look up all kinds of things, no matter how strange, because it's 'for the book'!

Excerpt

From Chapter 3

“Hi, and welcome to Charleston,” Alicia said. “I’ve heard a lot about both of you.”

That left one other person. He looked to be in his late twenties, with blond hair in a trendy cut, high cheekbones, and gray eyes the color of the sea after a storm. Unlike the others, he didn’t have a drink or a plate in front of him. The man’s appraisal made Evan shiver, although nothing in his manner seemed hostile.

“This is Sorren,” Cassidy said. “He’s my business partner, and he and my ancestor founded Trifles and Folly—my shop—back when Charleston was first chartered.”

Seth and Evan exchanged a glance. “But Charleston is over three hundred years old,” Seth protested.

Sorren smiled, and Evan caught his breath as he glimpsed the tips of fangs behind his lips. “You’re correct. And I am nearly six hundred. I am deeply interested in finding out about this witch-disciple you hunt. He has, apparently, gone to great lengths to avoid my notice.”

As soon as Sorren spoke, Evan wondered how he could have thought the man was close to his own age. Sorren had a presence that made it easy to believe he was immortal. Instinct warned him not to meet Sorren’s gaze, and he remembered stories about a vampire’s ability to glamour mortals and bend their will.

“Don’t worry. You’re safe here,” Sorren said, apparently noting Evan’s uneasiness. “You are guests in Cassidy’s home, and allies. That puts you under my protection—something I take very seriously.”

Evan pasted on a smile and nodded. Holy shit. What have we gotten ourselves into?

“You already know Teag, and I believe he and Seth have bonded over hacking to get information on some of the cases we’ve worked on. But his ninja computer skills are really an outgrowth of his Weaver magic,” Cassidy said, “which you know at least something about, from the spell-woven braided bracelets you gave each other for your birthdays.”

She sat at the table beside Teag. “Eat first, and then we all want to hear your story.”

Evan wasn’t sure what might pass for normal conversation with this crew, but the banter felt comfortable and familiar. They obviously knew each other well and were friends as well as colleagues. While they ate, the conversation drifted to local happenings, upcoming events, and the shared frustration that went with having to avoid road construction. Even Sorren commented now and again, and Evan noticed that no one at the table seemed to regard him fearfully. Evan glanced at Seth and knew from the look on his boyfriend’s face that the mental wheels were turning, appraising their new allies.

When everyone had their fill of the pizza and had topped off their drinks, the chatter stopped, and they all looked to Seth and Evan. Teag stepped away and returned with his laptop.

“We know a little bit about your hunt for the witch-disciples from the information Teag helped you find in the past,” Cassidy said.

My review:

4.5 stars

Unholy by Morgan Brice is part of the ‘Witchbane’ series and features Seth Tanner and Evan Malone as they continue to travel the U.S., trying to break the evil cycle started by the disciples of dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory. The hunt takes them to Charleston, where they finally get a chance to meet some of the allies who have been giving them assistance and advice thus far. Unfortunately, danger stalks the pair as well, and this time, they may have run into a curse that they can’t defeat.

This adult gay urban fantasy is also a romance, with plenty of action and adventure. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone story, however, one will appreciate the nuances better if the other books have been absorbed. The ticking clock adds to the tension of the story and the interactions with the denizens of the city are fascinating and provide a nice crossover with some of the other series by this author. I love the camaraderie and unhesitating support that is provided even as I was captivated by the challenges faced by Seth and Evan as they fought the curse that threatened to destroy everything they’ve accomplished thus far.

This is one of those books that you don’t want to start too late at night because you’re never going to be able to put it down until the very end. Whether you’re new to the series or already a fan, plan to be enthralled by an exciting entertaining story featuring two likable guys who are devoted to each other and determined to break the cycle of evil that has destroyed so many families.

My Past, Your Future by Gabbi Grey (Spotlight, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) RBC ADULT title

My Past, Your Future

by

Gabbi Grey

Callum MacLaren, a professor from Scotland, visits Willow Springs, Vermont during the Winter Solstice to study and explore the rich history of St. Joseph's Cemetery. His encounter with a sexy soldier in a tattered Civil War uniform is a captivating puzzle, and the more he learns, the deeper his attraction.

A hundred and fifty years ago, Elijah Freeman was killed during the Second Battle of Fort Wagner and woke up in Willow Springs, the only home he'd known. Alone, he roams the town, unable to leave or interact with a single soul until an intriguing Scot addresses him. Even stranger, the man can see him, hear him, and touch him--a sizzling caress that leaves Elijah aching for more.

But will Elijah return to his ghostly form when the magic of the solstice fades, or is Callum's love enough to keep him in the land of the living?

Genre: M/M Paranormal Erotic Romance

Excerpt:

“I’m not sure I have many answers.” And Elijah wasn’t. He’d figured a few things out over the years, but much of it was contradictory and nonsensical. Still, he relaxed a little, no longer on edge.

“Well, let’s start with you being able to touch people and them able to touch you.” As if experimentally, he placed his hand on Elijah’s. “You’re cold. Are you always cold, or is it the weather?”

Elijah cleared his throat. This was the first human touch he’d had in years, and it affected him more than he’d ever imagined. Not that he’d spent a lot of time wondering because he’d assumed it’d never happen. Should he have tried earlier, or was it, as he suspected, only this man?

Please don’t let go of my hand.

Cautiously, he curled his fingers, holding on tighter.

Callum reciprocated.

“As for temperature. I don’t understand. I don’t feel cold now, and I don’t feel hot in the summer. And summers around here can be brutal, despite how far north we are.”

Callum nodded. “Edinburgh, where I’m from, can get warm in the summer. But we’re closer to the northern point of the country, so it’s temperate as opposed to oppressive.”

His thumb caressed the juncture where Elijah’s thumb met his finger, and little zings shot through him. Like the sound he associated with the electric lights when they turned on at dusk. Of course, the whole concept of electricity was beyond him.

Two-Date Rule by Tawna Fenske (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) ANT ADULT title

by
Tawna Fenske
ADULT title

Publisher: Entangled (Amara)

Release Date (Print & Ebook): February 25, 2020

Length (Print & Ebook): 89,000 words | 362 pages

Genre: contemporary romance / romantic comedy

Tropes: Afraid to commit

Book blurb:

Willa Frank has one simple rule: never go on a date with anyone more than twice. Now that her business is providing the stability she’s always needed, she can’t afford distractions. Her two-date rule will protect her just fine...until she meets smokejumper Grady Billman.

After one date—one amazing, unforgettable date—Grady isn’t ready to call it quits, despite his own no-attachments policy, and he’s found a sneaky way around both their rules.

Throwing gutter balls with pitchers of beer? Not a real date. Everyone knows bowling doesn’t count.

Watching a band play at a local show? They just happen to have the same great taste in music. Definitely not a date.

Hiking? Nope. How can exercise be considered a date?

With every "non-date" Grady suggests, his reasoning gets more ridiculous, and Willa must admit she’s having fun playing along. But when their time together costs Willa two critical clients, it's clear she needs to focus on the only thing that matters—her future. And really, he should do the same.

But what is she supposed to do with a future that looks gray without Grady in it?

From Tawna Fenske:

The Two-Date Rule is all about finding the sweet spot between planning for the future and living in the moment.

Excerpt

She clutched the back of his head with an urgency he could read like subtitles on a skin flick. She wanted this as badly as he did.

“Grady,” she said, and his name was a hungry growl. He peeled the straps of her tank top down both shoulders, baring her to him. What perfect breasts. Round and full and exactly the right size to cup in his hands. Her nipples pebbled with his breath, then tightened as he swirled his tongue around one and then the other. He moved between them, growing dizzy with sensation and heat and the haze of his own need. Fuck, she tasted sweet.

“More,” he growled, gripping her hips.

She gave a soft squeak as he lifted her off his lap and eased her back onto the couch. Her hair fell over one eye, and she peered at him through the golden-brown curtain, looking rumpled and hungry and thoroughly debauched.

“I like where this is going.” She grinned at him, tossing her hair.

“So do I.” Boy, did he.

He gripped the waistband of her leggings, drawing them slowly down her thighs. Her panties came along for the ride, baring her inch by glorious inch. Jesus, her skin was flawless.

He paused with the fabric bunched at her ankles, giving her a chance to halt things, to tell him he was moving too fast. He could slow it down if he had to. Hell, he could take all night.

All fucking night.

Willa tossed her hair again, letting her thighs fall apart. “I want you.”

Or that.

My review:

4.25 stars

The Two-Date Rule by Tawna Fenske centers around Willa Frank, a driven woman who mistakes smokejumper Grady Billman for a stripper. Willa’s stipulation that she only allows herself to date a man twice prompts Grady to be very creative in planning “outings” that aren’t dates. Unfortunately, he may not be able to get Willa to join him in his casual approach to life, so the second date may never become a major concern.

This adult contemporary romance is the first book in the ‘Smokejumper’ series and is a perfect pick-me-up for a gloomy day. The chemistry and cute repartee between the main characters is fun and heartwarming, and the gradual revelations about their respective backgrounds keep one invested in the story. I love Willa’s collection of handicapped pets and what that says about her, and I enjoyed Grady’s ability to adjust to whatever is being thrown at him, including a desperate request for the use of a bathroom. There are delightful comedic elements that are counterbalanced by the serious issues that keep Willa off-kilter, and even though I thought the demands that result in the major conflict were ridiculous, I could see how they would threaten everything Willa has worked for.

I was in kind of a blah mood when I started this story, but it immediately caught my attention and brightened my day. I love that Grady looked at the relationship in this fashion: “This was how it was, getting to know her, like a treasure hunt of sorts.” This is a fun and touching romantic comedy and I look forward to reading other stories in the series by this talented author.

Two jobs down, three to go, and job #3 is mine. My name is Ridge Pfeiffer. I’m a dirt poor jewel thief from the wrong side of the tracks, and I don't play well with others.

Theoretically, the deal works like this. I do the job Charlie planned for me and Miranda erases my past, makes my biggest problems go away. Too bad my biggest problem is the one thing I don’t want to go away: Diplomatic Security Agent Davis Ethan.

When Davis caught me breaking into a safe during job #2, I should have ended up in jail. instead, I ended up in his bed. Rich, gorgeous, and privileged, the only thing we have in common is a love of beautiful lingerie and beautiful men. He’s everything I hate, everything I want, and he could destroy me with a word.

There are a hundred red flags surrounding this job, I should walk away and take my chances, but I’m going to do it anyway. Anything to buy me one more night with Davis.

One more job, one more night, and then I’ll leave for good.

Excerpt

“You know we don't have to meet in places like this. I'm willing to spring for some better accommodations.” I said, stripping the nylon bedspread off and tossing it to the floor. I grimaced at the feel of it between my fingers.

“I like this,” Ridge said. “It's perfect.”

“Perfect for what?”

“Perfect for cheap, meaningless sex. And that's all this is.”

I wanted to argue with him, but I also wanted to get laid, and I knew pointing out that we both knew this was more would only chase him away. “Can’t we have expensive meaningless sex? I’ve done it in five-star resorts. All I’m asking for is a place with nice sheets and room service. And a mattress that may have been cleaned sometime in the last twenty years.”

Ridge pushed me against the wall. “We could, Rich Boy, but this is my world and if you want me, you get my world with it.”

“Maybe we could chip in and meet in the middle.”

“Maybe I like seeing the pretty rich boy begging for someone like me in this run down pay-by-the-hour motel.”

“Do you like it here?”

“No, I don't like it. But this is where we are.”

We didn’t normally do this during the day. Dust motes danced in the light rimming the curtains. The room was dark and smelled of things I’d rather not think about.

Except for him. He smelled amazing. Whatever soap or shampoo or cologne he wore carried the scent of oranges and tk.

“Wait, how did you...why did you call me a rich boy?” How did he know?

“Really? I could smell it on you. Literally smell it on you. Your fucking Ambre Topkapi cologne, which sounds like a Pokemon for chrissake. You have perfect teeth, perfect haircut. Manicure, pedicure. You’ve never missed a meal in your life. You don’t live anywhere in the real world. Do you even know any normal people?”

“Everybody I work with.”

“And are you friends with them?”

I wasn’t. Not really. I tried but there was this barrier between us. Really, what could I say about kids and wives and bills?

He slid his hand down the back of my trousers and grabbed my ass. His grip turned into a caress as his fingers brushed across the silky lace and he lost his train of thought. “Are these the same ones?”

“Yes.” I said leaning my shoulders back against the wall and grinning at it. “The purple and black lace La Perla.” He loved those. They might not be the most expensive pair I owned, but they were certainly the most effective at getting him to fuck me through the mattress the way I loved. I had another surprised for him as well, but I’d let him discover that on his own time.

“Anyway. Stop distracting me.” His long fingers wrapped around my wrists, pinning them to the wall. His thumb caressed my pulse point, his thigh pressed between my legs and I couldn’t stop myself from grinding down against it.

“I’m distracting you?”

“Mmm hmmm,” he said mouthing along my neck. I tilted my chin up to give him better access. “You never talk about normal thing. You never complain about car repairs, the cost of anything.” His thumb pressed into the palm of my hand. “This watch?” he pulled away from me far enough to dangle my own watch in front of my eye. I hadn’t even felt him taking it off me.

“Clever boy,” I said, kissing him in reward.

His fox-like grin short-circuited my brain. In my defense, anyone would find thinking impossible with an angel rubbing up against them. I was surprised I could still breathe. “Gotta keep you on your toes.”

“Asshole,” I said, grinning back at him. I snatched it out of his hand, Knowing I was able to only because he let me was incredible arousing. I’d talk to my therapist about that another day.

“You’re the asshole, wearing a thirty-thousand dollar watch in a neighborhood like this.”

“Yeah, but—”

“But who would know? Everyone. We know how much everything costs in a way you never will.”

“We?”

“Poor people, Davey. We know the price of everything down to the penny because we have to.”

“Oh really?”

Really.

I jerked my chin at the shopping bag I had dropped at the doorway. “Then how about a quiz?” My brain came back on line as he backed away from me.

“What kind of a test?”

“I got you a present.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to.”

Laughing at his suspicious look, I handed him the bag.

He took it gingerly, holding it between two fingers much in the same way I had held the bedspread. “What is it?”

“It’s a present.”

“What is it?”

“Open it and see. That’s usually how presents work.

My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Pros & Cons of Desire by A.E. Wasp is the third in the series and focuses on Ridge Pfeiffer and his assignment from the crafty Charles Bingham. The restitution that the recently departed manipulator wants to accomplish is complicated by Ridge’s intense attraction to the mysterious Davis Ethan who had a significant influence on the previous mission. It turns out that it isn’t only Ridge who has been harboring significant secrets, some of which may prove to be deadly.

This contemporary gay romance series just keeps getting more entertaining, and the “gang” gathered at the late Charlie’s behest is melding together into a cohesive unit that is comprised of both lovers and friends (and brothers). I love the counterpoint of the intense and lusty relationship that is burning between the unwilling pair and the planning and research that is taking place. The twists and turns kept me riveted and I enjoyed seeing not only this relationship evolve, but getting glimpses of how the other guys are becoming more comfortable in their roles and in their connections with each other. The formidable Josie continues to provide a fun contrast (and a mind-boggling role model) even as the guys continue to dance along that tightrope between legal and not-so-legal maneuverings.

This author does a great job of balancing the angst and pathos of the horrific backgrounds that many of these men have dealt with and their sometimes challenging methods of coping with their pasts. Add in the delicious capers they embark upon, the hint of danger and violence that surrounds them, and the gradual revelations of their respective histories, and this series continues to enthrall and entertain. I thought this was the best story thus far and anxiously await the next installment.
