Again: Fox Hollow Zodiac by Morgan Brice (Spotlight, interview, excerpt, and review) GBP

It is my pleasure to share an interview from prolific author Morgan Brice (aka Gail Z. Martin)

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing goals.

A: I’m a full-time author, I love writing MM romance, and I’m a huge fan of the TV show Supernatural. My goal is to write fun stories that let readers escape from their worries!

Congratulations on your new release. Please tell us a little bit about it.

A: Again is the second book in my Fox Hollow Zodiac series, which is set in a small upstate New York town that is a haven for misfit shifters and psychics.

Again is a thrill-packed MM shifter romance adventure full of sexy shifters, hurt/comfort, one true pairing, reincarnation, sincere psychics, hunky mechanics, first responders, a sexy wildlife photographer, found family, and fated mates.

Are you a planner or a pantser? How much do you know about your story before you start writing? How often does your plan change? Why does this work best for you?

A: I’m mostly a planner, although I am totally up for seizing inspiration when it presents itself. I have a solid idea of the story when I start, although sometimes new twists and additions present themselves as the book goes along. Those almost always make the book better, so I’ve learned to roll with them.

What was the most difficult part of writing this book? Why?

A: There’s something about getting to the two-thirds point in a manuscript that presents a mental obstacle. Usually that’s because there’s something missing that I haven’t figured out yet—and don’t know that I don’t know. Once I dig down and work that through, the rest comes along pretty easily.

How do you develop a story idea? Do you always use the same method? Specifically, which do you develop first in your story building, the characters or the plot?

A: It really depends on the book. Sometimes I just get the plot idea and then fill in the characters from there. In other cases, I have a general direction in mind and fill in the details and world building and flesh out the plot.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

A: Both—but I get cranky if I don’t write. Plus I have bills to pay!

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

A: Hang in there. Everything takes longer than you think it will.

What is the best money you ever spent as an author?

A: A good desk chair!

How do you select the names of your characters?

A: I think about their age and where they’re from and their ethnicity, and then look at lists of baby names that fit those criteria.

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

A: Usually the next scene I have to write!

What were you like in high school?

A: I was the nerd who said she was going to be a writer when she grew up.

Then Noah accidentally records a murder, and the killer is on his trail. Can he elude a master tracker and reach the safety of Fox Hollow, or will he and Drew have to wait to find happiness in another life?

Excerpt

“I wish you could see this view in person—except for how cold it is.” Noah snapped a photo that didn’t do the colors of dawn justice, and sent it with his text to Drew.

He waited for a reply and realized Drew probably wasn’t awake yet. No one in their right mind is up at this hour.

He’d made the best of the cramped hotel room, knowing from experience to bring an extra blanket, good pillow, books, and power strips. Hotels never had enough outlets to charge his cameras. Fortunately, travel wasn’t a constant, but staying overnight to get the right light or have time to set up cameras happened fairly often.

Will that be a problem with Drew? Will he resent my photography? It’s a demanding job.

Noah cleaned his lenses and checked his batteries as he packed his day bag. Travel made it easy to find overnight company without entanglement, and he’d long ago grown tired of waking up alone. He’d had a serious relationship back in film school, which fizzled after graduation. There were a few boyfriends who lasted more than a month or two, but his irregular hours always ended up being more than anyone wanted to deal with for long.

Can it be different with Drew? We felt such an immediate bond—I’ve never had a connection like that with anyone. It’s like we’ve known each other forever.

“Of course. We’re fated mates,” his lynx reminded him, as if Noah could forget.

He smiled, thinking of their conversation that ended only a few hours ago. It wasn’t just the sex—although that was combustible in a way Noah had never experienced before. Everything took on a different light when it involved Drew. Talking about the trivial activities of the day wasn’t boring. Sharing a movie or even reading the same book and talking about their reactions now felt satisfying and fun.

I’m a Cancer—we’re protective and defend our family. Except I don’t really have any.

Noah didn’t have many living relatives. His father had vanished when he was young, and his mother died two years ago from a bad heart. He had a brother and sister, but they drifted apart, and Noah hadn’t heard from them in years. He wasn’t sure he even had valid addresses for them.

Drew is my mate. He’s my family now. And he has Russ and Liam and their friends. A pack. Someday, they’ll be my pack.

Clowder, his lynx sniffed. Lynxes have a clowder, not a pack.

Sounds like soup.

Clowder is not chowder, silly human. But we could vote to let Drew be an honorary lynx and join.

Vote? Who—you and me?

We are the only ones in our clowder now. It would be nice to add our mate—even if he is a dog.

Wolf.

Canine.

I’ve fallen hard. And it should scare me. But it doesn’t. When I worry that he might not feel the same, I can’t breathe

My review:

4.25 stars

Again by Morgan Brice is the second book in the ‘Fox Hollow Zodiac’ series, and picks up where “Huntsman” ends, as the former victims start to recover from their ordeal. Drew Lowe is supporting Noah Wilson, and despite their animal shapes being potential enemies, they decide to explore the connection they feel almost from the start. When Noah is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, danger mounts, and Drew discovers the glimpses of couples he’s been dreaming of have more significance than he ever dreamed of, they must find a way to break a terrible cycle if they’re going to survive to explore their attraction.

This exciting adult gay paranormal romance continues to give more insight into the inhabitants of Fox Hollow and the challenges they face. I was immediately drawn into the story and invested in the journey for these guys. I love that the characters from the previous story are also important in this one even as we get to know Drew and his wolf and Noah and his lynx. The tension mounts even as the mystical elements complicate matters, and I couldn’t help but root for the guys to find their happy ever after, despite them being from different countries and having different species as their alter egos. This is a fun addition to the series, and I hope there will be even more stories about the residents of Fox Hollow.

Excerpt

“Since when do serial killers get fan mail?” Homicide detective Vic D’Amato fumed. “How fucked up is that?”

“They don’t just get fan letters; they get marriage proposals,” his partner Ross Hamilton replied, shaking his head in disbelief. “I don’t get it, but that doesn’t stop it from being true.”

Vic took a slug of coffee from his stained mug and barely kept from grimacing at the bitter taste. Hospitals and police precincts always made the worst java. “I guess it’s like the people who follow all the true-crime podcasts. We get paid to be hip-deep in the worst humanity has to offer, but doing it for fun? People are weird.”

“You’ve been a cop for how long, and you’re just figuring that out now?” Ross teased.

Vic shrugged. “Every time I think that I’ve lowered my expectations too far, reality says—‘Here, hold my beer.’”

“Yeah, well. I’m right there with you on this one.” Ross chuckled. “Have you heard whether you and Simon will have to testify at the trial?”

“Pretty certain. Of all the charges, Fischer shooting Simon is the most ironclad, with plenty of witnesses,” Vic replied. “I’m not in any hurry to be part of the media circus, but I don’t see a way to avoid it.”

“Lucky you—the Slitter trial is shaping up to be the biggest deal Myrtle Beach has had in a long time.”

Vic grew up in a family of cops back in Pittsburgh. For generations, D’Amatos had been proud to serve. His father, brothers, and other relatives were still on the force up north while his sister was studying criminology. But an encounter with something supernat‐ ural Vic couldn’t explain had made him unwelcome with the Pitts‐ burgh police. Vic had relocated, started over in Myrtle Beach—and met the love of his life.

“I don’t want to put Simon through what happened the last time,” Vic confided.

“Not sure you’re going to have much choice about it.” Ross finished his coffee and set the cup aside. “The closer we get to the trial date, the more reporters will be angling for a scoop. I’m surprised there haven’t been some camped out in front of the store already.”

“I suspect Simon boosted the wardings against nuisance as well as malice. I tried talking him into going down to Charleston to spend some time with his cousin, but he flat-out refused to leave me here alone during the run-up to the trial.”

“Alone—with me and the captain and the rest of the department, plus a squad of lawyers and witnesses?” Ross joked.

“And not one of you with any magic, in a trial where the killer used spells to help him get away with murder,” Vic answered. “Simon doesn’t want to be in the spotlight—or the crosshairs—but if it comes to that, I don’t doubt he and his friends will come up with ways to protect us.”

Simon Kincaide, Vic’s fiancé, ran Grand Strand Ghost Tours. The boardwalk shop also offered psychic readings and séances, showcasing Simon’s abilities as a psychic medium as well as his knowledge of the spooky side of local history and his background as a former folklore and mythology professor.

When an impasse in the hunt for the Strand Slitter brought the investigation to a standstill more than a year ago, Vic tamped down on his deep skepticism about the paranormal and asked for Simon’s help as a psychic. Their first encounters with each other were prickly, and Vic accepted much of the blame for that since he had doubted Simon’s abilities and hated needing his help.

Simon turned out to be the real deal, and his visions plus the ability to communicate with the ghosts of the Slitter’s victims cracked the case—nearly costing Simon his life. In the year since then, Simon became an official police consultant, working cases with Vic and Ross when a supernatural connection seemed likely. Vic and Simon fell in love and now had a wedding to plan.

My review:

4.25 out of 5 stars

“No Surrender” by Morgan Brice is part of the ‘Badlands’ series that features Simon Kincaid and his fiance Vic D’Amato, who use their skills as a psychic medium and homicide detective, respectively, to solve paranormal cases. Mysterious curses threaten to derail an important trial, complicated by a very poorly investigated cold case involving missing women. The pair will have to use all the resources they can find to resolve the cases, but even that may not be enough to keep them safe from a determined killer.

This exciting gay paranormal mystery and romance continues to highlight the challenges of solving cases when the only witnesses are dead, and the skills needed are highly specialized and require sometimes unorthodox methods. It is always fascinating to get glimpses of the arcane abilities that Simon displays, but it’s wonderful to see how far his relationship with Vic has progressed from those early days of suspicion and doubt. The love that the two have for each other shines through clearly, and the trust and faith that underpins their connection only deepens as the series continues.

This author has the talent to make these characters come alive and become folks one would love to know (not so sure about interacting with the ghosts, though). The story is exciting and holds one’s attention, not only because of the uniqueness of the crime-solving, but because many of the secondary characters are so fascinating as well. I always am excited to see a new episode in these guys’ lives, and I enjoy getting cameos from characters in the author’s other series. Although this probably can be read as a stand-alone book, it will be much more enjoyable if the other stories in the series have been read. Be prepared to stay up all night to finish the story as you get caught up in the enthralling and thrilling action.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Flashing lights broke Liam out of his gloomy thoughts. The tow truck headed toward him, then did a U-turn and pulled in front of Liam’s car, backing up until it was close enough to hook up the Honda.

The truck driver got out and walked toward Liam, who reluctantly got out of the car. Even though he had called for assistance and it was clear the stranger was a legitimate responder, Liam couldn’t help feeling jittery, with his hands sweating, and heart thumping.

Those reactions doubled when he got a good look at the driver.

Oh, just shoot me now. Fuck my life. Why did he have to be so fine?

In the glare of the truck’s spotlights, Liam made out all the important details. The man had broad shoulders, strong arms, powerful legs, and a solid chest, standing a good five inches or more over Liam’s five-foot-seven frame. Liam had thought he might be saved if the driver was ugly as sin, but he was out of luck. His face was as utterly lickable as the rest of him.

“You called for a tow? Mr. Reynard?”

Liam nodded.

“I’m Russell Lowe—everyone calls me Russ. I own Lowe’s Auto Shop in Fox Hollow, and tonight I’m your personal tow truck driver,” he said with a broad smile and dimples. The man’s sharp cheekbones, full lips, and strong chin were highlighted by dark brown scruff. Liam’s gaze traveled upward, surprised at gray hair flecked with brown framing a face that couldn’t be older than thirty-five. Green eyes made Liam wonder what kind of shifter Russ might be.

He swallowed hard and might have blushed when he realized Russ seemed to be checking him out too. No matter how attractive his roadside savior might be, Liam’d had enough man trouble to last an eternity, and he sure didn’t need more in a new town.

“Yes, I’m Liam Reynard. Just Liam,” he said, wishing he could conjure up the natural charm that had always served him well in community theater performances. His fox could be quite dramatic. But now, on the run, scared for his life, and in the dark with a stranger in the middle of nowhere, he couldn’t muster his usual flair.

“The engine started making strange noises, and I pulled off. I didn’t want to break anything.” Liam cringed because heknew next to nothing about cars. Admitting that takes points off my “man score,” doesn’t it? Then again, so does being a sports-hating, gay fox shifter twink.

Well, at thirty, I’d thought my twink days were behind me. But when he compared his own shorter, lithe, dancer build to the solid man-mountain in front of him? Yeah, twink still fits.

“I’m glad you stopped the car without waiting for the car to stop you.” Russ finally shifted his attention away from Liam and focused on the Civic. “Let’s get the tow set up, and then you can ride in the cab with me to Fox Hollow.”

My review:

4 stars

Huntsman by Morgan Brice is the first book in the ‘Fox Hollow Zodiac’ series and features Liam Reynard, a fox shifter, who flees for his life to a unique hamlet called Fox Hollow and meets Russell Lowe, a wolf shifter who isn’t sure he can believe that he’s met his fated mate. Unfortunately, danger has come to Fox Hollow, and these two are in the eye of the storm.

This adult paranormal gay romance introduces a shifter society that has formed an enclave that is a sanctuary. Liam arrives there under less than auspicious circumstances and is reluctant to trust, so it’s heartwarming to watch his gradual acceptance into the close-knit society. Russell’s tragic backstory and caring interactions with the others in his live made him such an attractive character and I enjoyed the interactions between these two. I always like learning something new, and a skulk of foxes has now been added to my mental files, and I will have to look into key-finders, since I tend to lose several items regularly, lol.

It was fun watching each man argue with his respective animal, especially Liam’s “divafox” persona. I thought this was an entertaining introduction to a new series and I look forward to seeing some of the characters from this author’s other series make cameos in future stories.

As is always the case with this author’s works, this story is a lovely blend of fantasy, suspense, and romance, and I can’t wait to read more in this series.

Publisher: Self-Published

Subgenre: LGBTQ Urban Fantasy
Warnings: None

Blurb:

The devil you know is never the one you should trust.

Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the Morrígan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to election day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second.

But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the case: a stand-offish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister. Fighting Hannah and the Dominion Sect provides Patrick with a sinister reminder that some blood ties can never be cut.

Left behind in New York City, Jonothon de Vere finds himself targeted by hunters who will go through anyone to kill him—including the packs under his protection. With a bounty on his head, Jono is forced to make a choice that Patrick would never approve of. Doing so risks breaking the trust he’s built with the man he loves, but not acting will give the rival New York City god pack leverage Jono can’t afford to give up.

When Patrick and Jono reunite in Chicago, Patrick must confront the fraying of a relationship he’s come to rely on for his own sanity. But fixing their personal problems will have to wait—because Niflheim is clawing at the shores of Lake Michigan and the dead are hungry.

A Vigil in the Mourning is a 102k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Crown of Iron & Silver. Reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

Praise for A Vigil in the Mourning (Soulbound #4):

Patrick and Jono fight for their lives, tangling with Norse gods and monsters, while their relationship is strained by secrets and separation, in another exciting, deliciously angsty ride from Turner's Soulbound series. — Layla Reyne, author of the Fog City Trilogy

VIGIL IN MOURNING takes the Soulbound series a step further into stellar story crafting. A change in scenery for Patrick and a separation from his soulmate raises the stakes, and cliches are deftly avoided and expectations shattered as the central love story becomes fraught with tension. Each plot twist leaves the reader gasping and clinging to the pages, and I was not expecting that ending. Jono and Patrick lead an ensemble cast of characters that includes a snack obsessed dragon, a seer with a sarcasm problem, and gods that can't help but meddle. Patrick's snarktastic attitude leaves me laughing and terrified at the trouble he calls down.  — SJ Himes, bestselling author

**************

Excerpt:

Patrick shoved the TSA badge, a set of janitor keys, someone’s paper boarding pass, and a lanyard with LaGuardia printed on it into his jacket pocket, fingertips glowing from a look-away ward. Sparks of his magic twisted through the air in their immediate area as the ward directed everyone’s attention away from them.

“I told you to keep your hands to yourself when we went through security,” Patrick hissed.

“Maybe people shouldn’t leave stuff lying around waiting for someone to take it,” Wade muttered.

“They were wearing the damn things!”

Wade shrugged, gaze darting around as they walked through O’Hare, apparently unrepentant of his thieving ways. “I want a hot dog.”

Patrick rolled his eyes and kept walking. “I spent fifty dollars on the plane feeding you. Can we get out of O’Hare first?”

“But Chicago Style Hot Dogs is right there.”

My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

A Vigil in the Mourning by Hailey Turner is part of the ‘Soulbound’ series, and centers around Jonothon de Vere and his mate, Special Agent Patrick Collins, as they continue to deal with the conflicts stemming from establishing their own god pack, searching for the Morrigan’s staff, and the commitments they are bound by. Pressures and dangers mount, and their relationship may be stretched to the breaking point if they don’t have faith in what they have formed together.

This adult gay paranormal romance continues to enthrall, with its cast of compelling characters and the complex problems that face them. I adore their care for Wade, the young dragon who is coming to terms with his freedom, even if that means allowing him to overindulge his junk food addiction. The multiple pantheons involved make the situation even more complicated, as each faction strives for power and their share of worship. More people are learning about the closely held secrets that the pair have been dealing with, which leads to both hurt feelings and entanglements that may become an issue at some point.

One of the reasons I like this series so much is the intensity of the relationships. It’s obvious that both Patrick and Jon are determined to care for those around them AND each other, but neither is perfect and therefore mistakes will be made. I’ve always been intrigued by various mythological beings, and this mixture of Norse, Greek, and Haudenosaunee (Native American) not to mention vampire and shifter characters is such fun to explore. Of course, who can resist the Valkyries and their trusty rides, or the vision of Wade warming his feet IN the fireplace, or Thor as a bartender? And I agree, “Adulthood sucks. I want to return it.” (snicker)

This is a fun series that combines adventure, magic, mystery, world-shaking struggles, territorialism and gods vying for worshipers, plus dysfunctional blood family relationships and made family dynamics. I’m caught by the spell every time I pick up one of the books in this series, and for me this was the best one yet. I can’t wait to experience more adventures with these folks, but I am quite happy to reread this one while I wait!

Hitting the Books for the Book

By Morgan Brice

Research is one of my favorite parts of writing. Every book requires some research--even if it's set in the present. Of course, since I write urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, I end up doing a lot of research on story elements--some of which are 'normal' and some which are definitely strange! Like most writers, I assume I'm on a lot of 'lists' for some of the things I search for on the Internet!

Whether I'm writing paranormal romance as Morgan or non-romance urban fantasy as Gail Z. Martin, I take the magical elements very seriously. I want to get the lore right. There is a large body of information based on many real-world magical traditions, and I not only want to get the details correct, but I also want to be respectful to those traditions, which are the belief systems of real people.

So I'm constantly looking up the reputed magical properties of plants, minerals, and other things. I look at the urban legends and the lore around different types of monsters. I study up on banishing spells and exorcisms. And if I'm incorporating monsters, I base them on actual legends and mythology.

Wherever a book is set, the location is important. I try to ground my books in the history, legends, scandals, landmarks and lore of its location so that the place becomes a character in its own right, and the story couldn't happen the same way anywhere else. Also, since these are real places, people actually live there, and they'll let me know if I get it wrong! So details matter. Sometimes I make the decision to change a name or create a fictional location based on a real person or place to preserve privacy or for legal reasons, but it's always anchored in research.

Research also helps me get unstuck. When I can't move forward on a story, I know it's because my brain knows I don't have all the pieces. Usually if I start researching and let one interesting thing lead me to another and another, I find the missing piece that I didn't even know to look for! It's a wonderful feeling, a little bit of 'magic' in itself!

Research is definitely part of the fun of writing. I get to look up all kinds of things, no matter how strange, because it's 'for the book'!

Excerpt

From Chapter 3

“Hi, and welcome to Charleston,” Alicia said. “I’ve heard a lot about both of you.”

That left one other person. He looked to be in his late twenties, with blond hair in a trendy cut, high cheekbones, and gray eyes the color of the sea after a storm. Unlike the others, he didn’t have a drink or a plate in front of him. The man’s appraisal made Evan shiver, although nothing in his manner seemed hostile.

“This is Sorren,” Cassidy said. “He’s my business partner, and he and my ancestor founded Trifles and Folly—my shop—back when Charleston was first chartered.”

Seth and Evan exchanged a glance. “But Charleston is over three hundred years old,” Seth protested.

Sorren smiled, and Evan caught his breath as he glimpsed the tips of fangs behind his lips. “You’re correct. And I am nearly six hundred. I am deeply interested in finding out about this witch-disciple you hunt. He has, apparently, gone to great lengths to avoid my notice.”

As soon as Sorren spoke, Evan wondered how he could have thought the man was close to his own age. Sorren had a presence that made it easy to believe he was immortal. Instinct warned him not to meet Sorren’s gaze, and he remembered stories about a vampire’s ability to glamour mortals and bend their will.

“Don’t worry. You’re safe here,” Sorren said, apparently noting Evan’s uneasiness. “You are guests in Cassidy’s home, and allies. That puts you under my protection—something I take very seriously.”

Evan pasted on a smile and nodded. Holy shit. What have we gotten ourselves into?

“You already know Teag, and I believe he and Seth have bonded over hacking to get information on some of the cases we’ve worked on. But his ninja computer skills are really an outgrowth of his Weaver magic,” Cassidy said, “which you know at least something about, from the spell-woven braided bracelets you gave each other for your birthdays.”

She sat at the table beside Teag. “Eat first, and then we all want to hear your story.”

Evan wasn’t sure what might pass for normal conversation with this crew, but the banter felt comfortable and familiar. They obviously knew each other well and were friends as well as colleagues. While they ate, the conversation drifted to local happenings, upcoming events, and the shared frustration that went with having to avoid road construction. Even Sorren commented now and again, and Evan noticed that no one at the table seemed to regard him fearfully. Evan glanced at Seth and knew from the look on his boyfriend’s face that the mental wheels were turning, appraising their new allies.

When everyone had their fill of the pizza and had topped off their drinks, the chatter stopped, and they all looked to Seth and Evan. Teag stepped away and returned with his laptop.

“We know a little bit about your hunt for the witch-disciples from the information Teag helped you find in the past,” Cassidy said.

My review:

4.5 stars

Unholy by Morgan Brice is part of the ‘Witchbane’ series and features Seth Tanner and Evan Malone as they continue to travel the U.S., trying to break the evil cycle started by the disciples of dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory. The hunt takes them to Charleston, where they finally get a chance to meet some of the allies who have been giving them assistance and advice thus far. Unfortunately, danger stalks the pair as well, and this time, they may have run into a curse that they can’t defeat.

This adult gay urban fantasy is also a romance, with plenty of action and adventure. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone story, however, one will appreciate the nuances better if the other books have been absorbed. The ticking clock adds to the tension of the story and the interactions with the denizens of the city are fascinating and provide a nice crossover with some of the other series by this author. I love the camaraderie and unhesitating support that is provided even as I was captivated by the challenges faced by Seth and Evan as they fought the curse that threatened to destroy everything they’ve accomplished thus far.

This is one of those books that you don’t want to start too late at night because you’re never going to be able to put it down until the very end. Whether you’re new to the series or already a fan, plan to be enthralled by an exciting entertaining story featuring two likable guys who are devoted to each other and determined to break the cycle of evil that has destroyed so many families.
