Three Lessons in Seduction by Sofie Darling (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by Sofie Darling

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Lord Nicholas Asquith needs his wife. Too bad he broke her heart ten years ago.

Can he resist a second chance at the love he lost?

When Mariana catches the eye of the man at the center of an assassination plot, Nick puts aside their painful past and enlists her to obtain information by any means necessary, even if it means seducing the enemy agent.

Even if the thought makes his blood boil.

Only by keeping his distance from Mariana these last ten years was he able to pretend indifference to her. With every moment spent with her, he feels his tightly held control slipping . . .

Can she trust the spy who broke her heart?

Mariana spent the last decade forgetting Nick. Now she has the chance to best him at his own game, an opportunity she can’t resist, even as her view of him begins to shift. Increasingly, she wants nothing more than to seduce her own husband . . .

It’s only a matter of time before mad passion ignites, a passion never convincingly extinguished. A passion that insists on surrendering to the yearning of the flesh and, quite possibly, of the heart.

“Unbutton your dress?” Nick repeated. It wasn’t possible he’d heard those words in that order.

“Have you spent a single minute of your life bound within layers of corset, shift, and tightly buttoned dress? Has this ever been required for one of your spy missions?”

He couldn’t miss the scorn in her voice. “Never.”

“Then you’ll have to trust me when I suggest that it’s a bloody fantastic idea for you to unbutton me. You’ve done it before, in case you’ve forgotten.”

“I haven’t,” he said, his voice incapable of more than a low, gravelly rumble.

She blinked, and a moment passed.

Reason bade Nick exit the room and abandon the entire proposition. Under no circumstance should he close the distance between them and place his hands on Mariana’s body. Paper thin layers of chartreuse silk and muslin between his fingers and her skin wouldn’t be enough.

A few quick steps could carry him to her.

A few quick steps could undo him.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

Three Lessons in Seduction by Sophie Darling is set during the upheaval of the last days of the reign of King Louis XVIII. An estranged couple, Lord Nicholas Asquith, and his wife, Mariana, reunite in Paris and get involved in a dangerous game of spies, royal intrigue, and politics, not to mention the risk of finally destroying their precarious ties to one another.

This adult historical romance with political intrigue elements provides a glimpse of the machinations involved in change in power and the sacrifices that are attendant upon devoting one’s life to working behind the scenes. I think the author did a good job of creating intriguing characters, even though several of them frustrated me as they seemed to vacillate in their behavior and agendas. I occasionally wanted to smack some folks (or at least shake some sense into them, lol), but I enjoyed the overall story. There are elements that I was confused about, but I suspect it’s because this is destined to be the first in a series and some of these characters will figure prominently in subsequent stories. I found this an entertaining tale and will be on the lookout for more stories by this author as I thought there was a nice blend of intrigue, sensuality, and romance.

“I will do what is necessary to keep my mother safe.”

Quinn snorted. “And get your ass shot off. Wait for me.”

“No.”

“Stupidity is not a virtue.”

The first chance I got I was stunning his ass. “You need to get laid. It might improve your disposition.” I gave myself a mental head smack. Goddess, where in the nine hells had that come from?

A smile curved Quinn’s mouth. “You offering, darlin’?”

“Not in this lifetime.” My love life might suck, but taking on a dictatorial, bad- tempered Coletti warrior was sheer madness. A sigh escaped me. No matter how attractive I found him.

“You’ve never been kissed, have you?”

My jaw dropped. What? One look at the devilry in Quinn’s eyes, and I knew he enjoyed provoking me. “That is none of your business.” My duties didn’t allow time for romance, and keeping Mami safe was a full-time job.

Quinn smirked. “Pucker up, sweetheart. It’s an easy fix.”

I started the hover bike and zoomed off. I was definitely stunning him. Twice.

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.

Excerpt:

Share a bed with Egan? After what had just happened? Could she do it? Had they done it before?

“I’m sleeping on the floor,” he said, as though sensing her thoughts.

She whirled around. “I wasn’t…I was wondering if we…” Her cheeks grew hot. How did she ask that question?

The corner of his mouth twitched. “No. We haven’t.”

“Oh.” That settled the question about being lovers. Disappointment gnawed at her. She wasn’t his student anymore. She was a grown woman, with mature needs and desires. “I’m perfectly fine if you want to sleep on the bed with me.” At least she thought she was. “Besides, you’ll be uncomfortable, and might kink your neck, or worse.”

He shrugged off her concern. “Comfort isn’t the issue.”

“Then what is?”

 “Let’s just say I don’t need the distraction.”

Her? A distraction? His admission ignited a flare of hope. Without a second thought, she walked over to him, stood on her toes and planted a kiss on the same cheek she’d slapped earlier. His scruffy whiskers grazed her lips, searing a new memory into her brain.

“What was that for?” Frustration edged his voice.

“For slapping you. You didn’t deserve it. You were doing your job.” She returned to the bed and pulled down the covers, watching him out of the corner of her eye.

Egan stood rooted to the carpet for a moment. Then he strode decisively into the bathroom.

She smiled when she heard him swear just before slamming the door.

“So where is this alien craft?”

Fletcher had never completely trusted Commander Viktor Atrocitor. Since he had taken command of GIG two years ago, the atmosphere at the agency had become cold and suspicious, like the man himself. He seemed carved from six and a half feet of granite, blocky and scowling.

“It has disappeared.” Fletcher knew this statement would draw Atrocitor’s ire and disdain, but what was the use of denying the obvious?

“Fool! Can you do nothing right?” Atrocitor turned to the GIG agents waiting at a wary distance. “Search the neighborhood. Someone must have seen something or is hiding them.”

While Atrocitor berated Fletcher, other GIG agents spread throughout the neighborhood, offending pretty much everyone by demanding they stay in their houses while their property was overrun and searched.

After two hours of fruitless searching, Commander Atrocitor called a halt. “If you want to save your career and this town, you will bring me these aliens within twenty-four hours.”

As Fletcher watched the caravan of GIG vehicles disappear down the road out of Watermark, he felt like a six-year-old kid again. Bullied and humiliated for his belief that beings from distant galaxies simply wanted to explore and build alliances. They weren’t like aliens in movies who wanted to destroy humanity.

That’s why Fletcher started working at Geeks in Green. He thought he found other humans like himself who believed alliances with aliens could benefit everyone. Now he was starting to believe the rumors about Commander Atrocitor being heartless and determined to eliminate aliens were true. How could he know for sure?

His thoughts were interrupted when Agnes staggered out the back door toward the barn. “Who’s disturbing my goats?”

With her hair disheveled and her clothes askew, she did indeed look as if she had spent a raucous night of partying—the after-effects of being zapped by a ray gun.

Laycee and Fletcher followed Agnes into the barn, where the spacecraft was once again visible. Now the hatch was open, with guards standing on either side pointing ray guns at Agnes, Laycee and Fletcher.

“Holy extraterrestrial!”

With a sizzle of purple, one of the alien guards fired his gun and Fletcher crumpled to the ground.

“Why did you do that?” Ryan hustled out of the spacecraft.

“He is of GIG,” one of the guards stated. “He is a danger to our Queen.”

“Is he dead?” Ryan knelt over Fletcher’s inert body.

“Simply stunned. We will revive him when the danger to our Queen is gone.” The two guards loaded Fletcher onto a transport board, which levitated and moved inside the spacecraft.

“Your mouth isn’t moving but I can hear your words.” Laycee’s shocked whisper matched the stunned expression in her eyes.

“Our Canine Queen is birthing and is not to be disturbed.” This time the alien’s mouth moved as he spoke, and he looked like any other human except for a twinkle of star light in his eyes. “Weren’t you getting milk for the royal puppies?”

“Yes.” Ryan refocused his attention on this task, determined to ignore Laycee’s presence. What was she doing here anyway? “Agnes, do you have milk from your goats?”

“My goats don’t much like to be milked.”

“Surely it can’t be that difficult,” Ryan said.

Agnes lifted an eyebrow. “You’re welcome to try. I’ll get a clean bucket.”

Determined to get milk for the Queen’s puppies, Ryan began stalking one of the goats.

“I think it should be a female,” Laycee said.

Ryan felt like a first grader again. “I knew that.”

Laycee coughed behind her hand to cover her laughter. “There’s a girl goat on top of the space ship.”

Ryan looked up the curved, smooth surface. “Maybe there’s another girl somewhere easier to reach.”

He stepped around the space ship and over the boards broken when the craft crashed through the roof. “There’s a girl! Help me get her into a stall.”

“Um-kay.”

While Ryan circled around the nanny goat one way, Laycee closed in on her from the other side. The little goat narrowed her eyes at the humans and, when they were within a couple feet of her, she let out a bleat and ran between Ryan’s legs. Startled, he stumbled and dropped to one knee.

“Watch out!” Laycee’s shout made Ryan turn in time to see an irritated male goat charging toward him.

In fact, I live with a small herd of miracles in the furry forms of dogs, who are constantly trying to teach me to forgive, to play more, and to love without limits.

I write about people who find courage and integrity in the darkest times of their lives, who rescue stray dogs and kittens, who find a person they would willingly give their lives for, and who make their little corners of the world a better place.
People have remarked my stories "aren't what they expected." With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I take that as a compliment.

My review:

3.5 stars

Once Upon a Christmas Moon is a trilogy of very different stories that range from historical to paranormal to science fiction. “Twelve Days to Love” by Christine Love centers on plucky plantation owner Calanthe Durand who has managed to survive the Civil War, albeit with great losses, but still has plenty of obstacles to overcome. Archer Steele admired Cali from the first time he saw her, but getting past her wariness and helping her overcome the considerable obstacles she faces will require all the ingenuity this former northerner can marshall. “Boots and Blades” by C.L. Kraemer centers around gnome warrior Tiamoon who finds a way to combat her boredom by helping search for the missing gnome children from a neighboring village. Solving the mystery will require cunning and magic, and a belief in a legend that has roots in reality. “Christmas Pawsibilities” by Genie Gabriel explores the eccentric Madison family that Dori the time-traveling elfenchaun is about to marry into, and its adventures with the GIG (Geeks in Green) as they discover that all they’e been looking for may have been right under their noses.

This is a fun combination of stories, but I am afraid I don’t really understand how they are connected, especially since a Christmas moon only seems to be vaguely tangential except for the last story. “Twelve Days to Love” evokes the hardship and challenges of surviving the upheaval in the South after the Civil War and gives a glimpse into the struggles faced by women who must survive in that society. There are inklings of the way women find a way to wield power although I wasn’t quite convinced of their true self-sufficiency. The novelty of a unholy amalgam of paranormal creatures gives an interesting twist to “Boots and Blades” but it would have been nice to see more of Tiamoon’s prowess although I definitely enjoyed Pony. I love the inventions and the secondary characters in “Christmas Pawsibilities” that give the story a quirky flavor, and of course I was intrigued by the idea of an elfenchaun!

All of these tales are imaginative, but I think they were underdeveloped and the stories were a little unfocused, probably due to the limitations imposed by the length of the story. Hopefully, these characters will be featured in a longer tale at some point in the future. Those who like American historicals, paranormal, or science fiction will undoubtedly enjoy one or more of these tales.

A copy of this story was provided to me for review
