by
Jennifer Ivy Walker

GENRE: Paranormal Historical Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Haldor Falk, fierce warrior and powerful vitki blessed by the Goddess Freyja with the extraordinary ability to transform into a falcon, has been charged with forging Skjöld, grandson of King Harald Bluetooth, into a rugged warlord in the wild north of Norway.
With his acolyte’s training now complete, Haldor intends to return to the Viking stronghold of Normandy. But when a vision reveals an imminent attack on a dwarf guarding a hidden treasure trove in a secret cave, Haldor and Skjöld gain Dwarven-forged weapons and an unexpected, invaluable ally.
Úlvhild, a völva of formidable seiðr magic and Haldor’s lover of nearly twenty winters, foresees that the Dökkálfar Dark Elves will strike to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy. When the Norns unveil the terrible price of her fate, Úlvhild must confront a crimson-eyed witch to save her beloved falcon and ensure that the prophesied Son of the Dragon fulfills his destined path.
Falcon of the Faroe Islands is the sweeping, epic conclusion to the award-winning Valiant Vikings trilogy set in tenth century Normandy.
A sizzling blend of historical fiction, paranormal fantasy, Norse mythology, and steamy Viking romance!
EXCERPT
Tattoos in bluish black covered his rugged face, corded neck, and sinewy forearms. For the past two weeks, Skjöld had undergone the transformative ritual of fasting, isolation, and pain, as the images were carved into his skin. Blackened with ash, bone, and blood, each symbol embodied Skjöld’s ancestral heritage and Sámi spiritual power.
On his scarred, bearded face, a trio of droplets beneath his left eye marked the Veil of Vision with which Skjöld would attempt to wield the otherworldly gift of sight through water that he had inherited from his mother Ylva, his grandmother Lova, and his great-grandmother Sprota, a trinity of gifted Celtic priestesses from Bretagne in northwestern Francia.
An enormous dark blue dragon—emblem of Skjöld’s heritage as the prophesied son of the Dragon of Denmark and the Celtic priestess mother with otherworldly sight through water—covered his left shoulder and coiled around his thick neck. The fanged maw of the mammoth serpentine beast displayed a trio of Nordic runes.  Uruz, for strength; Tiwaz, for honor and valor; and Dagaz, for the transformation of Skjöld the Viking warrior into a Sámi spirit sorcerer with second sight through water.
Upon Skjöld’s sculpted forearms flowed long, fluid patterns of the Nordic rune Laguz, the Norse symbol for water, representing his Viking heritage.  Amidst the river of runes, Celtic triple spirals— symbolic of the trio of female ancestors who had passed their otherworldly gift of sight to Skjöld— covered his burnished skin, bronzed by the strong summer sun. Beneath the waves of runes and spirals were a trio of eyes beneath the water, evoking the Áhkká—the ancestral spirits and deities who would grant Skjöld the ability to wield his gift of sight through water.
After two weeks of isolation, fasting, pushing his body to the physical limits of pain and endurance, Skjöld would now face his final test—to enter the spirit world of water and wield his inherited gift to see beyond the human realm.
The rhythmic beat of Jaskka’s drum and the cadence of his slow, deep chant called Haldor’s attention back to the spirit leader of the Láhpi tribe. Haldor rose to his feet in solemn silence and strode toward Skjöld, who waited at the edge of the assembled tribe gathered around the fire.
A contradictory blend of courage and fear blazed in his fierce blue gaze.
 Haldor led his acolyte toward the frosty shore of the starlit fjord where the long, narrow boat that he and Skjöld had skillfully crafted from pine was waiting upon the smooth white sand. As part of Skjöld’s preparation for tonight’s ritual, the two of them had felled the tall tree, hollowing and smoothing the sturdy wood. Skjöld himself had shaped the vessel for tonight’s voyage to the spirit world by carving soft curves along the sides, like the protective waves of the sacred fjord. He’d etched Sámi sigils, Celtic symbols, and Nordic runes into the hewn wood, carving a mermaid at the prow, to symbolize his female ancestors—the Áhkká—guiding him on the monumental spiritual journey.
As Haldor now helped Skjöld into the vessel, he glimpsed the mermaid shimmering in the moonlight. Her long, flowing hair and slender arms blended with the curved waves along the sides of the vessel.  Intricate Celtic spirals and the Nordic rune Laguz wrapped around her limbs and elaborate tailfin, connecting her to the essence of the fjord and to Skjöld’s heritage as a spirit walker into the sacred realm of water.
My review:
3.75 stars
“Falcon of the Faroe Islands” by Jennifer Ivy Walker is the third book in the ‘Valiant Vikings’ series and features Haldor, who has been given the ability to shapeshift into a falcon, Skjöld, the male he has been tasked with mentoring, and respective females each becomes entwined with.
This lush adult historical paranormal Viking romance creatively portrays the struggles for supremacy by those who would rule that part of the world. The author paints very vivid word portraits of the society and its intersection with the gods that take interest in their actions and rule. I was drawn into the intrigues and harsh lifestyle and impressed with the depth of research that obviously went into the descriptions, but they became a bit repetitious after a while, and I definitely became convinced that juniper berries were used for everything! There is an odd cadence to some of the sentences for me, so it interfered with the flow of the story, and at first, I thought that Skjöld was the main character, not his mentor. The fantastical creatures that participate in the vicious struggles gave this story a unique twist, and I did enjoy the blend of paranormal and history, so I think fans of this genre will appreciate the care that went into the crafting of this story.
Thea Harrison
***This book does NOT end on a cliffhanger***
My review:
4.25 out of 5 stars
The Adversary by Thea Harrison is the second book in ‘Chronicles of Rhyacia’ series that features the Other land that Dragos and Pia and their associates are colonizing. The story begins immediately after the events in “The Unseen” as the desperate struggle to evict the being that has taken over Dragos’s body continues.
This story underscores the ruthlessness of the Wyr, and the cunning and intelligence that accompanies their athleticism and arcane powers. The heartbreaking elements shake their world to its foundation, and I suspect the repercussions will be ongoing, despite the temporary bandage that’s been applied.
Great cameos by multiple beings who have populated the various series in this universe. Not only did this story prompt me to go back and reread the prequel, “The Unseen,” but I am tempted to renew my acquaintance with many of the other stories set in this well-built universe. As always, the characters are both charismatic and memorable, and have unexpected depths and facets that continue to intrigue. I definitely hope that there are still many stories to come featuring some of my favorite characters of all time.
 Previous book in the series:
My review:
4.25 stars
The Unseen by Thea Harrison is the first in the quartet of novellas (edit: this is now a 2-book series) that continues the saga of Dragos and Pia and their growing family. It starts after the events depicted in “Planet Dragos” as Dragos and Pia relocate their home base to the Other land Dragos has named Rhyacia. All of the challenges of establishing an eco-friendly existence with none of the anticipated peace and quiet, as feverish construction efforts run into quite a few snags…some of which reveal significant peril.
This delightful addition to the Elder Races stories highlights what I enjoy most about these paranormal romance tales—deliciously fantastical characters, snarky dialogue, romance, danger, and great world-building. Pay attention to the warnings…this DOES end in a cliffhanger. Of course, it made me realize I had missed a story in Pia and Dragos’ life before this, and reminded me how much I loved the little novellas that popped up with new characters, particularly “Natural Evil,” which is one of my favorites. The wonderful cameos by most of the significant cast in the ‘Elder Races’ series was a delightful surprise.
Pia has definitely developed a feisty personality and this story reflects the adage, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger.” Her new baby, Niall, is definitely keeping everyone busy, and the rescue of a dog provides great comic relief as Dragos comes to terms with adding a “rejected snack” to his dependents. The eerie events that lead to the breathtaking climax are vividly depicted, and, impatient person that I am, made me search for and reread several of the connecting novellas while I strive to patiently await the next episode in the adventures of the Cuelebre family. Those new to these stories should definitely read some of the preceding stories in order to better appreciate the nuances and those who are fans already will enjoy re-immersing themselves in this wonderfully creative universe.
A century ago, the fairy crown was stolen from Alina Lehrer's clan, but now the usurper is dead and it's time to reclaim what's theirs. EXCERPT
I’m going to Paris, the city of love. Maybe I’ll even have a passionate love affair.
“Bonsoir.”
Alina jerked her head up at the sound of the stranger’s lilting French accent. “Hello.” Hello, handsome. Did my imagination conjure this hunk?
“First trip to Paris?” His pronunciation of “pah-rhee” rolled off his tongue like honey.
“Yes.” Alina twisted in her seat to get a better look. Her perceptive eyes sized up her companion. He was a gorgeous specimen of a man. Dark brown, shaggy hair. Hypnotic brown eyes. Strong jawline. Just a hint of stubble, like he had shaved that morning. Stop staring. “What gave it away?”
“The guidebook in your tote?”
“Yeah. That’ll do it.”
“Business or pleasure?”
Alina flashed him a suspicious “you’re a stranger, I’m not telling you anything” look.
He threw his arms up in mock defeat. “I am Rylan Jackson.” He extended his hand.
“A—” Wait a minute. I don’t need to give him a real name. It’s a good time as any to try on a new persona. “Allie.” She picked an alias, not so different than her real name, before reaching out to shake his hand. His hand was warm, rough, like he used his hands to make a living. Touching him sent a buzz of awareness swirling through her body.
“Now, we are friends, oui?”
His sultry smile disarmed her objections to the friendly conversation. It can’t hurt to flirt a little while I wait for my flight. It’ll be good practice.
My review:
3.5 out of 5 stars
A Fairy’s Quest by Maya Tyler is part of ‘The Magicals’ series and centers on Alina Lehrer, who is struggling to restore her family to their rightful place as fairy royalty. Unfortunately, there are multiple obstacles, including an assassin who has been tasked with eliminating her…despite his inclinations to the contrary.
This adult paranormal romance has an interesting twist on the relationship between fairies and wizards (non-congenial) and a bit of a mystery. I think it would have been better to have familiarity with the previous stories in the series because there are a lot of dangling threads that are woven together which refer to prior events.
There are a lot of introspective thoughts, flashbacks, and historical events experienced, so things get a bit confusing at times as Alina pursues the goal that has been emphasized for all of her life, and sometimes the pace of the story was a bit jerky for me. I did enjoy the glimpse of Paris and the connection that Alina forms with Rylan, but I think it would be nice to get a little more depth for all of the characters. I also appreciate the nod to the importance of getting professional help to deal with trauma.
Sin City Wolf: Howl by January Bain (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title
Sin City Wolf
ADULT title
by
January Bain
Never get between a wolf and his mate…
Billionaire. Casino owner. Tall, dark and deadly. Cristaldo Luceres is a potent force and a dangerous wolf to cross. Head of the House of Luceres, he’s used to fighting—literally—off any threat from rival houses. Wealth and women are his, but the one thing missing from his life is his mate.
Cristaldo’s on full alert when trouble comes to town in the beautiful shape of one Miss Everly Affini. The talented musician won a shot to play at the coveted Nero’s in Cristaldo’s Glittering Palace… and she could be the one, Cristaldo’s Forever Mate.
One problem is that she doesn’t think so—and isn’t shy about telling him—and another is that Rocco, an enforcer for the House of Ribelle, the Luceres’ sworn enemies, thinks she’s destined for him. Oh, and it’s the most powerful Super Blood Wolf Moon of the century, meaning chaos is unleashed.
Too bad. Once Cristaldo has a scent of his Forever Mate, he’ll fight for her…to the death if necessary. Everly doesn’t stand a chance.
Excerpt
Cristaldo
I stared out at the night, the pull of the waxing moon yanking hard. Taking a gulp of my Dalmore 62, the finest single malt whisky ever produced, I raked a hand through my hair. The need to run free was building, growing stronger by the hour. I needed to let the clean, dry desert wind blow everything else away.
Blame it on the blood moon, an ominous potent to all my wild forbearers, scheduled to rise over Las Vegas’s towering skyline in a matter of days. All my billions couldn’t stop that trickster from wreaking havoc on my kind. Not that I would trade places with any otherworldly creature. Nothing beats being a werewolf. Nothing. Especially being a billionaire werewolf, with more money and possessions than any other wolf or human on the planet.
I savored the final gulp of the fragrant whisky with its drumroll and smooth finish. It would prove amusing to see what my rivals at the House of Ribelle had planned during the event, necessitating me showing those mongrels their low rank in the pecking order. My wolf bristled at the very idea, prepared to strike.
I dropped my glass onto the proofs of the recent interview I’d done for Business Leader Quarterly. The founding of the Royal Bank of Luceres and the recent expansion of our casino enterprises into several new countries was the stuff of legend and warranted a huge center spread in the magazine. Amusing really, humans being unable to see more than what was right in front of their noses. My photo stared from the piece, all GQ to the public, but the slick surface hid a beast, ready to burst forth at a moment’s notice.
And that beast, bored and weary at the sameness of the days, needed a change. Where was the excitement? The new challenge? Having gathered all the riches the world had to offer didn’t fill the deep void of longing, growing stronger by the day, of wanting something more. Only to myself would I admit that my life was lacking, that surrounded by so many, I was lonely.
Maybe it was time to choose a mate? Even if she wasn’t the famed Forever Mate so valued by the pack, at least I would have company at night. Someone to share my victories with. No. I wanted the real thing. A true mate at my side, anointed as being the chosen one of destiny. I raised my head and closed my eyes, catching a sense of change on the wind. Something…was coming.
Thud.
My office door slammed wide open, causing a low growl of warning to escape my throat before I caught sight of the intruder who’d broken my concentration. Ah, Lucius. My identical twin. He’d come bearing dubious gifts, by the look of it.
Two frightened young women preceded my brother inside the penthouse offices of the Glitter Palace casino. They should be scared. Lucius might have been named for the light, but his heart was filled with darkness.
EXCERPT
Oh, my goodness, breakfast smells divine,” I said, bounding down the stairs two at a time toward the lip-smacking scent streaming from the kitchen. Rubbing my grumbling stomach, I peeked over Aunt Edie’s shoulder at the green gooey concoction boiling on the stove. I’ve been living with my aunt for the past eleven years since my parents died, and not once have I questioned her cooking abilities. Until now. I folded my arms and leant against the kitchen bench. “I know it smells amazing but are you sure it’s edible because it sure as heck doesn’t look like it.”
Aunt Edie frowned and her eyebrows pulled together. Her classic pondering expression. She snapped her fingers and looked straight at me with her golden honey-brown eyes glowing like she’d just solved the world’s climate crisis.
“Popcorn. I forgot the popcorn. Evelyn, honey be a dear and grab me the popcorn from the second shelf in the pantry. The caramel packet, not the plain.”
Caramel popcorn for breakfast? That’s a new one.
I shrugged. “Sure.” Walking into Aunt Edie’s pantry was like walking into the potions classroom at Hogwarts. Every witch’s dream pantry. Normal food on the left-hand side and on the right, every potion ingredient a witch could possibly need, clearly labelled in its allocated spot. Aunt Edie would always say: a place for everything and everything in its place.
“I can’t believe Halloween is only three days away,” I called, swiping the caramel popcorn bag off the shelf. Heading back out, the hunger monster growing in my stomach grumbled, clearly protesting the fact I still hadn’t satisfied its demand for food.
