BLURB:

Witches, cats, pumpkin pies and murder!

I’m Evelyn Grayson and if you’d told me by the time I was 23, I’d have lost both my parents in a mysterious accident, moved in with the coolest Aunt ever, lived in a magical town, and I was a witch, I would have said you were crazy. Funny thing is, you’d be right.

Camille Stenson, the grumpiest woman in Saltwater Cove is set on making this year’s Halloween celebrations difficult for everyone, but when she turns up dead and my best friend is on the suspect list, I have no choice but to find out whodunit and clear her name.

Amongst the pumpkin carving, abandoned houses, and apple bobbing, it soon becomes apparent dark magic is at play and I must use all my newfound witches’ abilities to find the killer before another spell is cast.

Step into Evelyn Grayson’s magical world in the first book of the Melting Pot Café series, a fun and flirty romantic paranormal cozy mystery where the spells are flowing, and the adventure is just beginning.

EXCERPT

Oh, my goodness, breakfast smells divine,” I said, bounding down the stairs two at a time toward the lip-smacking scent streaming from the kitchen. Rubbing my grumbling stomach, I peeked over Aunt Edie’s shoulder at the green gooey concoction boiling on the stove. I’ve been living with my aunt for the past eleven years since my parents died, and not once have I questioned her cooking abilities. Until now. I folded my arms and leant against the kitchen bench. “I know it smells amazing but are you sure it’s edible because it sure as heck doesn’t look like it.”

Aunt Edie frowned and her eyebrows pulled together. Her classic pondering expression. She snapped her fingers and looked straight at me with her golden honey-brown eyes glowing like she’d just solved the world’s climate crisis.

“Popcorn. I forgot the popcorn. Evelyn, honey be a dear and grab me the popcorn from the second shelf in the pantry. The caramel packet, not the plain.”

Caramel popcorn for breakfast? That’s a new one.

I shrugged. “Sure.” Walking into Aunt Edie’s pantry was like walking into the potions classroom at Hogwarts. Every witch’s dream pantry. Normal food on the left-hand side and on the right, every potion ingredient a witch could possibly need, clearly labelled in its allocated spot. Aunt Edie would always say: a place for everything and everything in its place.

“I can’t believe Halloween is only three days away,” I called, swiping the caramel popcorn bag off the shelf. Heading back out, the hunger monster growing in my stomach grumbled, clearly protesting the fact I still hadn’t satisfied its demand for food.

    Excerpt:

    He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them. “I miss Cam. It was as if we were two parts of the same soul. I lived vicariously through him even while I worried constantly about him. It was one of the reasons I was constantly warning him to be careful. I was afraid to lose him.”

    Ethan looked away and rubbed the back of his neck. “And then I did.”

    She felt as if her heart were breaking all over again, not for her but for Ethan. He was so good to her. He even loved her. And she… “Ethan, I understand.”

    His gaze returned to hers. Though she couldn’t see his face clearly, the limited light reflected off the sheen in his eyes.

    She placed her hand on his cheek and rising on her toes brushed her lips across his in a feather-light kiss. She only meant to give comfort, but a spark of something else hit her heart.

    She remained there, her lips close to his but not touching, wanting more but afraid to ask.

    Ethan remained absolutely still, his breath mixing with her own.

    He loved her but would never push her. It wasn’t his nature. She could walk away right now, but to what?

    Nothing.

    She stared at his mouth in the dim light. She wanted to live again. She wanted to feel again. Tilting her head, she pressed her lips more firmly against his, moving her hand down his stubbled jaw and behind his neck to pull him closer.

    Ethan’s lips opened, and she slipped her tongue between them.

    As his arms came around her, it was like waking from a dream. A slow burn flowed through her veins as he took control of the kiss and explored her mouth with his tongue. It was an unhurried exploration and heat built in her belly. When he pulled back to lick the underside of her top lip, she took her first deep breath. As she exhaled, tingles spread throughout her body.

    He kissed the corners of her mouth before leaning his forehead against her own. “Ye catch my blood on fire, lass.”

        BLURB:

        Apollo is fond of many things. Music, poetry, physical prowess, truth, and love. Coronis' duty is to marry, but she yearns for so much more. She is a fierce competitor, a hunter, skilled in strategy and reason. Those that would court her lack both the mind and the body to rival hers - she will settle for no less. As a mortal, Apollo was both infuriating and tempting. But Apollo the Olympian is terrifying. He sat in a metal tub, one leg dangling over the side. He was talking, of course. The man seemed to think his every word a gift from the Gods. Erato, who was on her knees washing his foot, laughed as if she agreed. Stupid cow.

        Khloris appeared then, pouring water over his shoulders from a large earthen jug. He sighed, shivering slightly, as Khloris set the jug aside and began to scrub his neck and shoulders. Her pale fingers clasped a thin rag against his gilded skin, sliding it over the impressive curve of his shoulder.

        Coronis swallowed again, her hands fisting inexplicably.

        He looked at her then, startled. But instead of looking ashamed, his brows rose, his lips curved in that smug grin, and he waited.

        She wanted to yell. She wanted to hit him, to slap that look from his all-too-handsome face… To demand his apology for putting his baser needs before the respect he owed her father. He should not sit, smug and waited-upon, when she’d been sent to fetch him. She was not a common servant. She was certainly better than the two serving him. Oh, how she longed to tear the cloth from Khloris’ pudgy fingers and knock Erato aside...

        She stopped then, stunned by rage twisting her insides.

        She was a fool, too, to waste time expecting more from the likes of him. He may be named after Apollo, but was a man. An irreverent, lustful, peacock of a man…

        She cocked a brow in return, not bothering to hide her disdain as she spoke. “I will inform my father that you’re too busy for his company this evening.” Erato gasped, Apollo’s foot sliding from her hands, while Khloris dropped the rag in the dirt at her feet. With mumbled apologies, they both hurried from the tent, scurrying past Coronis into the night.

        He dared laugh. “Stay, awhile, fair Coronis. These maids were simply attempting to make me fit to visit your father’s home.”

        “I fear it would take far more than a… bath to make you fit company for my father.”

        My review:

        4 out of 5 stars
        Eclipsing Apollo by Sasha Summers is part of the 'Loves of Olympus' series and is a retelling of several elements of Greek mythology, particularly events involving the interactions between Apollo and the humans who populate his favored city of Delphi.  A celebration of the Pythian games draws Apollo and Hermes to interact with mortals who have no idea of the honor being bestowed upon them.  King Phlegys’ daughter, Coronis, enthralls Apollo but becomes an unwitting pawn in an ongoing struggle amongst many of the deities.  Coronis must figure out whether it is possible to believe in eternal happiness with a god and Apollo will have to figure out whether he can give his heart to a mortal.

        This deftly told story brings to life many of the beings who populate the fascinating tales of the gods in Olympus and the way they interact (and interfere) with the mortals on Earth.  The author does a nice job of bringing to life some of the salient details of several different tales, including those of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades; Demeter’s feud with Erysichthon; and the conflict between various mortal factions, but I think that a few liberties may have been taken with some of the events as this version differs from some of the ones that I have read.  Despite that, the story does a nice job of evoking some of the excitement and fascination with the competitions of the era, and the heroine’s expertise in one particular skill is inspirational—although one wishes she was a bit more unconventional in other aspects.  The story is a combination of sensual romance and cautionary tale and provided an enjoyable reminder of the complicated relationship between the Greek gods and their subjects.

        Forbidden Things: Book One - Dissident by Nikki McCormack (VBT, excerpt, GIVEAWAY) GFT

        Here's a fun interview with author Niki McCormack

        What group did you hang out with in high school?
        NM: I tended to be rather solitary. When I did hang out with a particular group, it was either the nerds/geeks or the goths/stoners. I’m not sure I fit properly with either, but I found them all interesting. Socializing was always less compelling than people watching to gather fodder for my books. The majority of my true friends came into my life after high school.

        What are you passionate about these days?

        NM: My writing, as always, is still a primary passion in my life. I am, unfortunately for my work, also quite passionate about video games. I love a good RPG, mostly because I love having the opportunity to play in the stories of others in such an interactive way. Several injuries have limited some of my other passions, such as horseback riding, kayaking, and cave exploration; though I hope to spend more time doing those things again soon.

        If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?
        NM: I think the only thing I really wish I had done differently is taking my writing seriously earlier in my life. I treated it like a hobby for years, even though it was the only career I ever wanted. I feel as if I might have been in a better position coming into the eBook revolution than I am now if I had focused on it back then, but I have also improved significantly in my writing over the years, so it might also be better that I waited.

        Ebook or print? And why?

        NM: Both. I love eBooks because that format is so accessible to people and is the most popular medium these days. I will probably always have print available, however, because I love being able to have a copy of my books on my shelves and because it is so much fun to do public signings where I can actually meet people who are interested in what I do.

        What is your favorite scene in this book?

        NM: There are several scenes I love, but the first to come to mind is one of the ones I most enjoyed writing. The scene is in the last third of the book when Indigo has a chance to save Yiloch from an assassination attempt, but she must risk exposing her greatest secret to do so. When…oh wait. No spoilers.

        by Nikki McCormack

        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        BLURB:
        Ascard power can strengthen, heal and create. It also has great potential to destroy, enough to topple entire governments. Indigo’s country places strict limitations on the use of ascard so she must channel her talents into the healing arts or risk severe punishment. An orphan from a disgraced family, trapped by her father’s treason, Indigo struggles to reclaim her place in a society that has driven her into an abusive engagement.
        Then a mysterious stranger from a neighboring country contacts her using ascard. He needs help escaping his prison so he can bring an end to his emperor's oppressive rule or die trying. His unshakable devotion to his cause and the passion hidden behind his cool arrogance move her to help him at the risk of being branded a traitor herself.
        When the politics of society bring them together a second time, Indigo decides to use her growing powers to help him fight his war. If only she dared fight for her own future with such passion. Perhaps she can find the courage to do so by helping the man she has fallen for win his revolution. She might have exactly the power he needs to succeed.
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        EXCERPT

        Indigo stared at the place Eldrian had been seconds ago. With him there, even the beasts couldn’t drive her away. With him gone, icy fingers of dread crept up her spine. She wanted to be anywhere else. In scant seconds, everything changed and all she had left of him were memories and a pair of boots.

        Looking at the oversized boots, she grinned. Though she barely knew him, something about him fit her. His arms felt like home more than any place she had ever been. Jayce would be a poor substitute for this exotic man who made her feel so wanted and alive. Such was the price she would pay for her father’s treason.

        She stepped closer to the pillars, pulse racing, but the shimmer was gone. He was gone and she couldn’t follow. In that instant, she would abandon everything to go after him. Placing a hand on either side of one pillar, she closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against rough gray stone. If only…

        The sound of movement behind her shattered her musings like so much fragile glass. Her heart bounded into her throat. She spun. A hound ambled into the canyon. She looked into its sightless eyes and recognized death in them.

        Court of the Hawk by Debbie Peterson (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY)

        I have the pleasure of having a guest post by author Debbie Peterson...

        For this exciting tour stop, my lovely hostess asked me an interesting question. She wanted to know if any of my hobbies has in one way or another, enriched my writing. Now there’s a loaded question if I ever saw one!

        Let me answer it like this…

        For those who know me--have followed any of my previous book tours, or read my bio on the back of any one of my books--know that I have a PASSION for genealogy and family history. This passion goes way beyond looking for the names, dates, and locations one might find on a grave stone in an old cemetery, creepy or otherwise. No, I have to have so much more than just that. Way more. I want to know who they were! I want to know everything about their lives and their families. What did they do for a living? Farmer? Merchant? Fisherman? Sailor? Inventor? What historical events were taking place while they lived? Did they participate in those events or merely witness them? As far as my colonial ancestors go, what made them leave everything they knew behind, cross a temperamental ocean and settle themselves in an unknown land, the dangers of which they couldn’t even begin to comprehend?

        After years and years of research, I’ve been able to answer some of those questions for many of my ancestors. Each tidbit I discovered along the way was like winning the lottery! Especially if I could find a recorded history about them personally in a dusty old library or courthouse.

        In turn, I used some of that knowledge in my books. Spirit of the Rebellion, I took a page pertaining to America’s Civil War from my own family history. My great-great granduncle, William Confer, met his death at the age of nineteen during the battle of Chickamauga. You’ll find parts of his life intertwined in the characters of both Beau and Chauncey. I also patterned a letter that Shae (the heroine) reads to Tristan (my ghostly hero), from several letters that a civil war ancestor penned to his wife.

        In my novel Spirit of the Revolution, Jolena uses her knowledge of the “how-to’s” of genealogical research to help Mathias solve the enigma of his last earthly mission. A mission that involves a mysterious letter written to General George Washington.

        The castles spoken of in both Spirit of the Knightand Court of the Hawk are based on real castles that a couple of my ancestors (bearing the title of “Sir Knight”) occupied or fought to defend. Also included in Spirit of the Knight, are the genuine steps one must take to obtain knighthood. Steps all of these ancestors had to have taken.

        So, at least in my way of thinking, this particular hobby of mine has definitely enriched and will continue to enrich, my writing!

        EXCERPT

        “How old are you?” She held her breath and waited. In fact, she waited so long she wondered if he’d answer the question at all.

        Finally, he dropped his gaze and returned a slow nod. He made the gesture more in response to an inner resignation than directing it toward her. “First, if I might ask, what gave rise to your curiosity?”

        She combed the windblown hair away from her face and shrugged. “Does it make any difference as to how you’ll respond?”

        He considered that for a time before he spoke. “No, I suppose it doesn’t. Still, I’d like to know.”

        “All right, I don’t have a problem giving you the answer.” She cleared her throat. “The quake disturbed several portraits hanging along the hallways. I found one of them on the floor after leaving my room. So, I picked the antiquated thing up with every intention of replacing it, but the subject stole my attention. You see, if asked under oath in a court of law, I would swear you posed for the portrait at least two, maybe even three centuries ago.”

        “And you didn’t stop to consider whether or not the man in the painting might be a distant ancestor to whom I bear a great resemblance?” he asked.

        She extended a finger to his face, gently traced the scar that did naught but enhance his looks, and shook her head. “Not when the artist painted him with this.”
