My Fake Rake by Eva Leigh (Spotlight, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) PTPR

by
Eva Leigh
 Union of the Rakes Series

In the first book in Eva Leigh's new Union of the Rakes series, a bluestocking enlists a faux suitor to help her land an ideal husband only to be blindsided by real desire…

Lady Grace Wyatt is content as a wallflower, focusing on scientific pursuits rather than the complications of society matches. But when a handsome, celebrated naturalist returns from abroad, Grace wishes, for once, to be noticed. Her solution: to “build” the perfect man, who will court her publicly and help her catch his eye. Grace’s colleague, anthropologist Sebastian Holloway, is just the blank slate she requires.
To further his own research on English society, Sebastian agrees to let Grace transform him from a bespectacled, bookish academic into a dashing—albeit fake—rake. Between secret lessons on how to be a rogue and exaggerated public flirtations, Grace’s feelings for Sebastian grow from friendship into undeniable, inconvenient, real attraction. If only she hadn’t asked him to help her marry someone else...
Sebastian is in love with brilliant, beautiful Grace, but their bargain is complete, and she desires another. Yet when he’s faced with losing her forever, Sebastian will do whatever it takes to tell her the truth, even if it means risking his own future—and his heart.

“You don’t need to alter yourself for anyone. Especially not Fredericks.”
No one had ever said such a thing to her. Something stung her eyes, and she realized it was the heat of unshed tears of appreciation. “But Rotherby said—”
Sebastian drew closer. “Trust in me, Grace. Trust that when the time comes, Fredericks will be utterly captivated by you. And if he still can’t get his head out of his arse, then he’s not worth the effort.”
“You seem to keep swearing in my presence,” she said, because it was either make a jest or gratefully kiss him.
Kiss him.
Wait—what?

An All For Love Novel

Nothing mattered but looking into Logan’s eyes. . .

. . .keeping his gaze as he placed his other arm around her, fully embracing her.

She didn’t say a word of protest as he bent his head. Nor did she move away when he kissed her, his arms pulling her even closer. For a matter of seconds, perhaps minutes, she lost her sense of self, the apartness she’d felt for years.

Her hands grabbed his jacket, holding on as her knees nearly buckled. Her heartbeat escalated; her breathing grew tight. Blood heated and pounded as her skin warmed. She wanted to be closer, for this feeling to continue, to never end. He was no longer a stranger or quite a friend. Instead, he was more than that.

Sinful Rewards #12 by Cynthia Sax ADULT title (Guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) TBT

It is my very great pleasure to have a guest post by the very talented Cynthia Sax. I have enjoyed this ADULT series immensely and I hope that those of you who have read it have had as much fun with it as I have!

Sinful Rewards 12 – Saying Goodbye To Beloved Characters

by
Cynthia Sax

I’m often asked what the toughest part of writing is. For me, hands down, no competition, it’s writing that final chapter, knowing I’ll have to say goodbye to the characters in the story.

With Sinful Rewards, this was especially difficult. I’ve spent 12 novellas, over 1,200 pages with Bee, Hawke and Nicolas. We’ve grown together, shared secrets, laughs, tears. They’re as real to me as many real life people are. (My dear wonderful hubby always prefaces any of our discussions with ‘Are these people you know in real life or in books?’)

I loved most seeing how Bee has matured. When we first met her in Sinful Rewards 1, she was all about the exterior. She sought to look the part, believed in faking it until making it. She was a fashionista, caring about labels and designers.

During the 12 novellas, all of this is stripped away (literally and figuratively). She hooks up with Hawke, a fellow exhibitionist. He helps her become comfortable in her own skin. As she builds her confidence, she cares less and less about what people think about her. She starts to look at the interior, at people’s souls, rather than their clothes.

A defining snippet in Sinful Rewards 12 is when she realizes she doesn’t need her nemesis’s approval.

***

She hates me. For the first time in my life, I ask myself why. I’ve never done anything to warrant her loathing. Could her attacks be a deflection, as Mrs. Davis’s were, as Mr. Wynters’s were? Were her criticisms about herself, not me?

Have I been trying to impress someone who is more f***ed-up, more miserable and self-loathing, than I’ve ever been?

***

In Sinful Rewards 1, Bee’s inner dialogue would have focused on herself, on the problem being her, not the nemesis. In Sinful Rewards 12, she realizes that the hatred isn’t about her. It is about her nemesis.

One of the fun things about having a 12 novella serial is being able to show this huge change but the offset is I’m even more committed to Bee and her adventures. It was very challenging stopping the serial at 12 stories.

That’s why I’m hoping that readers will want a story about Cyndi or our lonely billionaire or another character in Sinful Rewards. That way, I can revisit Bee and see how she’s doing. (grins)

Do you find it challenging to end a story or series you’re reading, saying goodbye to those characters?

Excerpt

(note from ELF...this is one of the tamer excerpts, but I love what it shows about how far the relationship has come between Nicolas & Bee)

Nicolas stands in the hallway, a sheepish smile on his beautiful face, and my small burst of joy dissipates, replaced by the dreaded malaise. He’s handsome, the lights shining on his black wavy hair, tanned skin, dark eyes. He’s immaculately dressed in a gray suit, white shirt, pink tie. He’s carrying ice cream, a small tub of Heavenly Hash cradled in his perfectly manicured fingers.

But he’s not Hawke. He’s not the man I love, the only person I want to see.

“Don’t look at me like that, Bee.” Nicolas pushes his way into the condo. “I had that situation with the New York build last night. There will be fancy events in the future.” He holds up the tub. “I brought ice cream.”

I summon a smile. “You forgot about me.” I take the ice cream from the dashing billionaire. “What do those articles I sent you say about forgetting friends?”

Nicolas grimaces. “You knew I was a bad friend.” He walks with me to the kitchen, smelling of expensive cologne and wealth.

“You’re not a bad friend.” I set two bowls and two spoons on the counter. “You’re a terrible friend.” I open the tub of ice cream.

The real estate developer settles his long lean body on a bar stool and dips a spoon in the container. “You’re not giving up on me, are you?” The lines carved between his perfect eyebrows belie his casual tone.

“I’d never give up on you.” I knock his sucked-clean spoon away and huddle over the tub, protecting the ice cream from impatient-billionaire-induced contamination. “Hawke doesn’t love me,” I blurt, needing to voice this, to share this with someone.

“He said that?” Nicolas steals a spoonful of ice cream from the bowl I’m filling.

“No.” I frown, scooping as fast as I can. “But he’s never said he loves me, either.” I push Nicolas’s bowl toward him.

His eyes sparkle. “I’ve never said I love ice cream.” He shovels the sweet treat into his mouth with a boyish glee. “But I do. Very much.” His lips curl upward. “The name of this flavor is perfect. It is heavenly.”

“Hawke doesn’t love me,” I repeat stubbornly, dishing out a smaller portion for myself.

“A good friend would agree with you.” Nicolas’s head is bent over his ice cream.

“You’re not a good friend.” I place the tub in the freezer compartment of the fridge. “What would you do?”

“I’d tell you that neither of you are acting rationally, that if craziness is a sign of love, Hawke has it much worse than you.” Nicolas licks his spoon. “He guards you like you’re the last piece of prime real estate on the planet. I’m taking my life into my hands by simply eating ice cream with you.”

I climb onto the bar stool beside him, his observations about Hawke’s protectiveness appeasing me, banishing some of my melancholy. “He cares about me.”

“No, he cares about his team.” The billionaire’s lips flatten grimly. “Disregarding all of my advice about maintaining his distance.” Nicolas believes remaining aloof from his employees makes painful staffing decisions less traumatic. “What Hawke feels for you is in an entirely different category.”

“It isn’t love.” Or is it?

Twisted by Cynthia Eden (Review) TBT

I had the lovely opportunity to have a guest post and excerpt from Cynthia Eden last month at this link.

Now, it is my pleasure to offer my review.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Twisted by Cynthia Eden is the tale of a search for a missing girl that involves the Last Option Search team (L.O.S.T.) but morphs into a far more sinister and complex case that threatens both those directly involved and the satellite people who are drawn in.  Emma Castille has managed to carve a safe niche for herself in New Orleans, until she gets drawn into a case that will require her to not only use her powers of observation but will also cause her to risk everything she values.  Dean Bannon has found a way to move on with his life and has found a new profession but he is still overshadowed by his past and his skepticism and distrust make it difficult to accept the attraction he feels for the woman who becomes pivotal to the case he is investigating, if he can keep her alive long enough.

There are some stories that draw you in and ratchet up the tension until you are wincing as the action unfolds yet can’t wait to find out how things will turn out.  This was one of those, and even better, it was filled with fascinating people who are multilayered, have plenty of demons of their own, yet have an ideal that coerces them to go on, despite the obstacles they encounter.  This story stands alone as a compelling and intense thriller that has lots of unexpected twists and turns, yet makes one intrigued enough to look for others in the series.  Although there were a few areas that were a bit illogical for me and a couple of areas of predictability, one becomes invested in the story so much that they don’t matter because it’s a great read.  Be warned, this is not a tale for those who are squeamish as there is a fair amount of blood and gore, but I definitely want to read the story that started the series and will be anxiously awaiting additional adventures involving these intriguing characters.

A copy of this title was provided for my honest review

Can You Read Me?
by Cynthia Eden

I have a confession to make…I’ve always wanted to be able to read people.  To be able to look at someone and pick up on all the unconscious “tells” that people give off to others.  I think it would be so much fun to understand all the secrets that people tried so hard to keep…but still managed to reveal with the wrong body language.
In my latest novel, Twisted, my heroine can “read” just about anyone.  She sizes up her prey in just a glance and can find all the secrets that people would prefer to keep hidden.  While doing my research to develop Emma Castille’s character, I picked up a lot of tips about how to read someone’s body language. I thought I’d share a few with you. (You may already be aware of these “tells” and some could be new.)

1.     Look for signs that indicate stress. Some usual “stress” signs include...a person rubbing his forehead or rubbing his hands against his thighs.
2.     People will stall…If you ask someone a question and instead of responding, she…clears her throat, glances away, bites her lip…then odds are good this person could be thinking of a way to lie…or this person just knows you aren’t going to like the answer that’s coming!
3.     Protect me. You know the little notch at the base of your throat? Right there as you angle down to your chest? If you see a woman touch that notch, she’s trying to protect herself. Your questions could definitely be putting her on edge.
4.     It’s all in the eyes…If a person’s pupils constrict, she is probably looking at something she doesn’t like—something that bothers her.  Cops will often show suspects pictures of their victims just so that they can watch their responses to those images. The eyes truly can be the window to the soul.
5.     Shoulders, baby, shoulders.  If someone is frustrated or exasperated—you’ll see the shoulders start to tense up.  If someone is relieved—those shoulders will drop.

Do you have any particular “tells” that reveal your emotions? Please share them with me!
Thanks so much for checking out my post. Have a great day!
Best,

Cynthia Eden

Blurb

In the second seductive Lost novel from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden, an obsessed Last Option Search Team agent goes looking for trouble—and finds her in the Big Easy.

Dean Bannon comes to New Orleans for one reason only: to track down a missing sixteen-year-old girl. That’s before he meets the drop-dead gorgeous con artist who makes him want to lose his legendary control.

With her past, Emma Castille doesn’t claim to be psychic. She just notices things other people don’t. Like the fear in a runaway’s eyes-or the pain in an ex-FBI agent’s heart. Her chemistry with Dean is blistering, but Emma follows her passion . . . not someone else’s orders.

Then a madman breaks into Emma’s home and leaves a twisted message: “You’re next.” Now Dean refuses to let her out of his sight until he pries every last secret from her full, sexy lips. And suddenly Emma’s aching to give him everything he wants.

Excerpt
“A reading …” he said. She almost shivered. The guy had one of those amazing voices that, once a woman heard it, she didn’t forget. Deep and rumbly. A voice made for darkness.
And sex.
She’d detected no accent in his voice, and Emma was very good at recognizing accents. Accents, habits, behavior—she noticed them all.
Like the way Dean Bannon had a habit of rubbing his jaw with his index finger and thumb. He did that when he was thinking. When he was annoyed, she’d noticed that a muscle flexed along the left-hand side of his jaw. And—
“Your name is Emma Castille.”
She leaned forward. “I can use the cards if you want. Some people like that part.” She actually did know what all of the cards meant, so she could shuffle them and give a reading, no problem. But she preferred to work in other ways.
“You’re not psychic.”
Were they back to that?
She put her hands in her lap. Emma didn’t believe in making nervous gestures. She didn’t believe in giving away anything at all with her body language.
“What you are …” Ah, now he did smile. Her father would have called it a shit-eating grin. The more PC term was probably a Cheshire cat smile. Whatever the name, that smile annoyed her. “What you are, Ms. Castille … is a criminal. A fraud.”
Maybe she should grab her chest and dramatically gasp. She didn’t. “Wonderful for you,” Emma said. “You pulled up a background report one me.” She let her eyes widen a bit. “It’s amazing just what one can find if a person knows how to use a search engine.”
A furrow appeared between his eyes.
“How about I say what … you are?” Emma asked him. “A washed-up FBI agent who snapped on the job. You held your control tight every single day, but the bad guys—they just didn’t stop, did they? You hunted them, you stopped them, and more appeared. While you were fighting the system, they kept coming, and the bodies kept piling up on your watch.”
He shot right back to his feet. The folding chair slammed down behind him.
“You and your father bilked desperate people,” he accused. “You told them you were psychic, that you could help find their missing children. And you—”
“We found them.” Two girls who’d vanished. They’d found them. “We just didn’t get to them in time.” And she would not go back to that place.
She motioned toward Manuel. He knew the signal meant he could take over her booth. There was no way, no way, that she was going to stay there with that prick while he slammed the most painful moments from her past in Emma’s face.
Manuel, pale, tattooed, with piercings in his lips and eyebrows, quickly claimed her spot.
Emma jumped to her feet. Muttered her thanks, and fled right past the guy she was starting to think of as Agent Jackass.
She pushed through the crowd. Wasn’t there always a crowd in Jackson Square ? And that was why she loved the place. It was so easy to vanish in a crowd. To be anyone.
The crowd closed around her.
To be no one at all.
She hurried around the back of the cathedral. She knew the streets so well. Her home was close by. Emma would get inside and forget Agent Jackass.
I’m being followed.
Emma stilled at the intersection. A horse-drawn carriage rolled by her. Voices called out.
And he touched her.
Emma didn’t flinch. Didn’t scream. She looked down at the hand on her shoulder. “When a woman runs away from you, that means you need to stay the hell away from her.”
His hold tightened on her. “You and I aren’t done.”
She looked up at his face. Had she really thought the man was handsome? Annoying, that was all Dean Bannon was.
“I need to find that girl, and you’re the only lead I have so far.”
“Then you’re not a very good investigator.”
Ah, that muscle flexed in his jaw. Lovely.
