Exclusive Excerpt:

Natan returned to the beach and walked along the shoreline, his mind racing. He would need to kill a man on the marrow. His nature screamed in horror with the thought, a knot of dread tangling in his gut. There had to be another way, but he couldn’t see it.

As the sun began to set, he threw himself on the sand and rolled to his back, then fell to dreaming about Kavi. He knew he shouldn’t, but the sun shone warmly on his face, and the ceaseless waves were making him drowsy. Wistfully, he wondered if Kavi could marry a fisherman. He didn’t think he would mind. After all, Kavi’s family had fished the sea. And it would be easy enough to put in a raised bed in the back of the house for a vegetable garden, if Kavi wished...

He pictured Kavi in his mind, and faint heat rose in his face. Of course, Kavi was lovely, all his people were handsome, but Natan remembered the sparkle in his dark eyes when they’d first met, reflecting the joyous spirit within. Natan would give anything to see happiness in Kavi’s face again. Anything to be the one to put it there.

Someone sat beside him. Natan peered through his lashes, wondering if he should feign sleep. His breath caught at the sight of Kavi so close. Natan was reaching for him before he recalled himself and scrambled to sit up.

“Hello,” he stammered, then cleared his throat.

“Did I wake you?” Kavi asked as he wrapped his arms around his knees. “I hope you don’t mind that I came looking for you.”

“You didn’t wake me.” Natan turned his gaze to the sea. Kavi had caught him off guard, and his love was pounding through his body as relentless as the tide. How was he to keep it from him? But then, why should he? He believed he could make Kavi happy. In time maybe Kavi could learn to love him in return.

His breath quickened. He’d do better not to think of that. If Kavi could only care for him a little, the heavens knew he had enough love for both of them. Natan leaned toward him, the confession trembling on his tongue.

But Kavi began to speak, and Natan’s words turned to ash in his mouth.

Kavi’s accusations battered at him. “I understand why you did it, Natan. Why you took our power from us and kept it for yourself. But did you have to let my father die as well? Were you that threatened by him?”

“What?” Natan faltered, dazed by the cruel attack. “Do you truly believe me capable of that?”

Triumph gleamed in Kavi’s eyes. “Yes I do, though it’s not your fault. The madness had us all at one time, dear. I’m sure Kirstin can help you, as well.”

Natan rose to his feet, his heart leaden. “I’m sorry if…” He couldn’t continue and gave Kavi a deep bow, acknowledging all that he had said.

Dianne is the author of m/m romance, paranormal/suspense, fantasy adventure, the occasional thriller, and anything else that comes to mind.

She now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. Dianne says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee in her hands, which kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

The Lady Under the Lake by EJ Russell (Spotlight, excerpt, and review)

The Lady Under the Lake

Quest Investigations, Book 3

by

E.J. Russell

Blurb:

This client is all wet...

After receiving a hot tip on the whereabouts of my almost-boyfriend’s nearly-ex-husband (hey, I told you—it’s complicated!), I thought my love life was finally coming up for air. But when we stake out the remote lake, it’s not the ex who surfaces.

It’s the Faerie King’s long-missing mother (and I mean really long, as in double-digit centuries), and she wants to hire Quest Investigations. Since one of my bosses is the king’s brother, he has a tsunami of…feelings about her as a potential client, and refuses to take the case. Instead, he passes it to me.

Yes! However…

Should I be thrilled at the vote of confidence or suspicious that he’s tossing me in the deep end without a life preserver, the better to punish the woman who abandoned her kid all those years ago?

You know what? It doesn’t matter. I may be Quest’s token human, but I’ve proven I can get the job done, so I dive right in. Then the lady explains what she wants me to do: find her missing child.

Seriously? I expected more of a challenge. All I have to do is introduce her to the king and bingo, case closed. But when she says, "Not that one," this little family drama threatens to send ripples throughout the supernatural community—especially with my boss in over his head as the prime suspect in a fae kidnapping.

As if things weren’t complicated enough… Remember that nearly-ex? When he shows up and muddies the waters, I’m faced with a choice: I can solve this case or I can finally hook my almost-boyfriend.

Dammit.

Excerpt:

I gazed out the window, not that the fields in Lane County were particularly interesting this time of year. As I did, I caught sight of the truck bed in the side-view mirror. The empty truck bed. “Where’s the canoe?”

Lachlan chuckled. “The beaver clan doesn’t want us on the water. It seems that their kits’ first ever lodges aren’t as sturdy as they might be, and they don’t want to risk any damage.”

“Then how—”

“Rusty Johnson and Casimir Moreau are letting us use their dock. The rest of the clan can’t fuss about it because Rusty built the house on the opposite side of the lake from where most of them live—after Casimir bought all the other lots on that end of the lake.” Lachlan chuckled. “Seems the two of them like their privacy.” He winked. “Fond of naked midnight swims as they are.”

I swallowed, my throat gone thick. “G-good to know.” To distract myself from the image of Lachlan and me on a naked midnight swim, I looked everywhere but at him. That’s when I noticed something else missing. “Where’s your pack?”

Lachlan flicked on his turn signal and headed for the highway exit. “Back on my boat.”

I turned in my seat, the better to frown at him. “But Wyn’s at the bottom of that lake. How are you going to find him without your skin?” Before you ask, that’s not as creepy a question as it sounds. Selkies are seal shifters, and they control their shifts by putting on or removing their seal skin, which resembles a very closely furred wetsuit more than a creepy eyeless seal that’s been boned by a Ginsu knife.

“I couldn’t swim in the lake anyway, lad, not in my skin.” His smile glinted as the sun slanted in through his window. “Not my seal skin, anyway. Selkies are salt water folk. The lake’s fresh water.”

“So what would happen?” My eyes got round. “You can swim, can’t you? I mean, without shifting? You wouldn’t drown?”

“I can swim, and I wouldn’t drown, but I couldn’t shift either. It takes the touch of the sea to keep me in seal form.”

I folded my arms. “Why does none of the selkie lore mention that?”

“Think back on all the selkie tales you’ve read or pestered me for. Have any of them taken place anywhere but by the sea?”

“Well. No.”

He turned onto a road marked Private. “There you go then. Maybe we like to keep a few secrets to ourselves.” He winked at me. “We’re not like you humans, who want to share every little thing about our lives with the world, whether the world cares about it or not.”

You humans. Yep, there’s still a divide, but with Lachlan, it’s always seemed like my humanity was more of a turn on than a drawback. Eleri had once told me, “Selkies and humans. It’s a thing.” Yeah, I was counting on that traditional thing. A lot.

“So if you can’t dive into the lake and invite him topside for a little chat, how will we get his attention?”

Lachlan patted his anorak pocket. “Your friend Dr. MacLeod gave me a wee calling card.”

I blinked. “Bryce?” My other boss, Mal Kendrick, was married to a druid. I narrowed my eyes. “It’s not a potion, is it? Mal always says druid potions are nasty.” Since Bryce was an environmental science professor as well as a druid, I knew better than to think whatever magical doodad he passed along would hurt the lake or its denizens. But that didn’t mean it wouldn’t hurt Lachlan, or at least cause him significant discomfort.

“Nay. Just a little message I’ll float along on the water, to let Wyn know he’s safe and we’d be grateful for a chat.”

On the one hand, good that the calling card wasn’t too invasive. On the other hand, I’d prefer to deliver a more forceful message to Wyn. Something along the lines of Get your ass up here and divorce Lachlan already.

Lachlan pulled the truck onto a gravel drive that snaked through the woods and ended at a beautiful, sprawling Craftsman-style house right on the lakeshore. While the shrubs along the flagstone walk leading to its wide front porch were neat and healthy—I suspected a dryad gardening service—they weren’t particularly well-established. “This is new?”

He nodded. “Finished last spring. A wedding present from Rusty to Cas.”

I frowned at him. “How do you know so much about them?” I’d met both men—Casimir was the youngest vampire in the country, and would remain so since one of the conditions for that mass vampire rescue/exodus was a moratorium on turning anybody else. Rusty was a beaver shifter, but Inactive—unable to shift—so he was effectively human, although it didn’t seem to bother either him or Cas.

“The water-based supe community isn’t that big. I’ve known Rusty for years. We’re both…at odds with our clans, although for Rusty, it’s them rejecting him. With me, it’s the reverse. We’ve tipped a few pints in our day.”

We got out of the truck and I looked around. The house’s windows were all covered with blackout shades—which made sense, given that a vampire lived there. “They’re not at home, are they?”

Lachlan shook his head. “Nay. They’re at Cas’s place in Portland this week. Some kind of benefit for the hospital.” He gestured to a gravel path on one side of the house that led toward the lakeshore. “The dock’s down that way.”

We crunched down the slight slope toward the dock that extended fifteen feet or more into the lake. There was a small structure next to the dock, but it was completely on land, clearly not like the boathouses that dotted the far shore. “If they don’t have any boats, what’s that building for?”

Lachlan grinned at me. “Best not to ask, lad. But when they’re done with their naked swims, maybe they’d prefer not walking all the way back to the house.”

My jaw dropped. “You’re kidding. It’s a wank shack?”

He studied the building, head tilted. “More than a shack, I’m thinking. I’d reckon more than wanking too, but also not our business.”

Lachlan took my hand and led me onto the dock, our footsteps echoing hollowly. When we got to the end, he sat down and patted the boards next to him. “Have a seat. We may need to wait for a bit before we get Wyn’s attention.” I complied, and when he pulled me tighter against his side, I didn’t resist.

My review:

“The Lady Under the Lake” by E.J. Russell is part of the ‘Quest Investigations’ series and continues the adventures of Matt Steinitz, better known to the paranormal beings as Hugh Mann, as he tries to free his love interest, the selkie Lachlan Brodie, from his handfasting to Wyn, a water fae. Unfortunately, he gets sidetracked by a new client, also a water fae, who not only disrupts the smooth running of Quest, but may cause a rift that will affect even the rulers of the fragile Seelie/Unseelie Convergence.

This delightful gay paranormal story is an excellent addition to a fun and exciting series. I’m afraid that the show is always stolen any time Jordan, the young werewolf with a Frisbee obsession, is present, but adding the hellhound puppy Doop just seals the deal.

I love watching Hugh/Matt navigate the tricky and perilous path of being one of the few humans who is actually aware of the myriad of paranormal beings and who is truly interested in all of the permutations of the fae. He started out as a little too pushy, I thought, but his arc has shown that he truly cares…both for Lachlan, but also for those he’s come into contact with while working with Quest Investigations.

These stories are such a breath of fresh air, and I always am anxious to find out what is going to develop in these beings’ lives. I’ve always been enamored with various mythologies, and I find these new perspectives to be both fun and thought-provoking. I adore Jordan and Doop, and I can’t wait to find out how they destroy, I mean, help with more cases.

In Ancient Egypt when the pharaohs ruled the banks of the Nile, Mahu led a simple, if somewhat melancholy, life. Making papyrus filled his days. His needs were provided for, but deep in his soul, Mahu longed for companionship.

Dakarai, born of a demon mother and a human father, craved independence. A young incubus constantly in the shadows of his full-blooded siblings, Daka set out for a new city and a life of his own.

While a starving Daka roams the streets hunting for a meal, the sight of a beautiful man walking alone stops him in his tracks. The handsome stranger is just what he needs to quench his spiraling thirst.

But Mahu turns out to be more than Daka bargained for, and his heart falls for the lonely man.

What betrayal shatters their foundation, can Daka and Mahu find their way back to each other, or is each soul destined to long for the other for all eternity?

Excerpt

Dakarai

Hunger stirred deep in Daka’s core, an emptiness with claws and teeth demanding to be filled. It was his first night in Naukratis, and already he wondered if he’d

made a mistake abandoning the safe cocoon of his family. Though eager for a taste of independence, Daka’s nerves flut‐ tered with unease as he stalked the unfamiliar streets.

With only a warm sea breeze for company, Daka let loose his extra sense, the one that would lead him to a meal. Entering the wide market square, he cast his gaze over dozens of stalls, their colorful awnings muted in the evening light. Laborers celerated the end of a day’s work with beer, bread, and conversa‐ tion. Street vendors peddled their offerings. Naukratis smelled of fresh spiced fish, baking bread, and candied nuts—all of which appealed to him, but none that would quench this particular hunger.

What Daka needed would be found past the town’s main market, perhaps down a side street or along a narrow alley. Inhaling through his nose, sorting the myriad array of scents, he searched for the alluring aroma of pleasure. A brothel would suit perfectly.

Daka’s intuition guided him forward, but before he could cut south to chase the divine smell of arousal around the corner, his gaze landed on an elegant man and refused to budge. His eyes possessed a will of their own, such was the man’s appeal.

He was taller than Daka’s average height, long of limb with wide shoulders and perfect posture. He wore cornflower blue linen, belted at his narrow waist, skirt hanging to a svelte pair of thighs. Dark onyx tresses hung past his chin, straight and prob‐ ably silken to the touch. Daka couldn’t be sure of the texture at this distance and it was suddenly of the utmost importance to find out.

Though brothel workers would make for an easier target, Daka veered off course to pursue the handsome man instead. To seduce him and touch his lovely hair for himself. He followed through the square—dodging people and slinking amongst the crowd, stealthy as a cat and just as light on his feet—until he was no more than ten paces from his quarry.

This close, Daka could pick up the scent lingering in the man’s wake. Earthen and woody, like the papyrus that grew in the marshy lands nearby. He inhaled greedily. What would he smell like aroused? Daka had to know.

The man left the busy center of town, turned west, and continued between rows of mud brick houses, his pace steady as a pulsing heart. He had the stride of a man to a purpose. Daka’s curiosity grew with each step. Instead of catching up to begin the seduction, Daka shoved his appetite aside in favor of learning the man’s destination.

They walked for another quarter hour until the chirps of bugs overtook the noise from town and houses gave way to farmland. Daka spotted the neat rows of tumuli leading to an ancient mastaba, and their endpoint became clear.

The man had led him to the final resting place of Naukratis’ dead.

Well-maintained burial mounds, with funerary gardens throughout, lined the landscape. Daka hung back so as not to be noticed or to disturb this man in his grief. The perfect posture he’d noted earlier began to sag, shoulders drooping forward, head bowed as he knelt by a triad of graves. He sat back on his heels, long thighs stretched thin, the blue linen of his skirt revealing smooth bronzed skin.

Daka could not help his appetite, inappropriate as it may be, though he would strive to contain it. This man was in no mood for the sort of amorous encounter an incubus like himself fed on. He needed a warm, familial embrace, not the frenzied release Daka itched to provide.

He slunk back into the shadows to watch from under a sweet-smelling date palm. The man sat with the dead. Daka sat by himself, wondering who the man had lost.

Daka’s family possessed immortality. At least, his mother and siblings did. His father was human, but Daka had never met him. As a half-blooded demon, he’d staked claim to immortality but not to all the gifts that came with it. His powers of sway and persuasion were paltry in comparison to his full-blooded brethren. Unable to bend people to his will, Daka could only nudge. He might never develop the skill of astral projection. But he would live forever, a feat which seemed unfathomable at only twenty-two years into eternity.

The man bent over the graves had a decade or so on Daka in age, perhaps more. Maybe thirty-five or forty, Daka couldn’t tell. A man in his prime but worn around the edges with the melancholy that loss thrusts upon the living.

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

Beyond the Ruby River by Lee Colgin centers around a half-incubus named Dakarai, who has never quite felt in sync with his family of immortals. His connection with a mortal widower, Mahu, leads him to believe that he can find love, but it can only be fleeting because humans have such a short lifespan. Finding a way to maintain a relationship may require a price neither is willing to pay.

This adult historical gay paranormal romance gives an intriguing and vivid glimpse of life in ancient Egypt and provides several thought-provoking conundrums. There is the conflict of being a demon and entirely outside of the other person’s religious beliefs, Mahu’s faith that he will rejoin his family in the afterlife that Daka doesn’t believe in, the punishment for making a significant decision without permission, and the challenge of immortality and its effect on decisions, to name a few.

Although this story is part of the ‘Immortal Jewels’ series, there is no problem reading it as a stand-alone tale. I suspect that one of the secondary characters had a major role in a previous story, but, although I am curious, I had no problem understanding his concerns and motivations. I liked the way the relationship unfolded for the first part of the story, but I was disappointed by the way things unfolded for the second half, even though I could understand the reasoning. I can’t help thinking that one of the pair deserved better, even though he did commit a pretty egregious error. This left me feeling vaguely dissatisfied, even though the story ultimately did meet the criteria of a romance. The bonus story did help and makes me hopeful that there will be a tale featuring yet another unique being. Now I need to read the previous stories in the series!

Book blurb:

Forgiveness is a hollow prayer you only hear in your dreams.

Patrick Collins has spent years handling cases as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency, even as his secret standing in the preternatural world has changed. He should have confessed to his role as co-leader of the New York City god pack when he and Jonothon de Vere took up the mantle months ago, but he didn’t. Now that split loyalty will cost him at a time when he can least afford it.

Outmaneuvered, framed for murder, and targeted by the Dominion Sect, Patrick has to face a past full of lies to regain his freedom. Revealing the truth means he’ll need to give up the life that has defined him. Everything he’s fought to build with his pack is at stake, and losing them isn’t a price Patrick is willing to pay, but some choices aren’t his to make.

Jono knows they can’t cede any more territory if they want to win the god pack civil war spilling into the streets of New York City. But the souls of werecreatures are free for the taking when demons come to town and angels sing a warning no one can ignore. “The only way to win is to take them out completely. That’s going to be a costly fight in terms of blood and territory,” Jono said.

“What about our alliances?” Wade asked.

Jono shook his head. “Their assistance in maintaining our borders is helpful, but we need to be the ones to push Estelle and Youssef out. This is our fight.”

“What about going the direct route and meeting them in the challenge ring?” Marek asked.

“I wouldn’t trust any fight that happens in that place,” Amelia said flatly.

Other people in the crowd echoed her statement. Patrick had never been to the challenge ring located beneath the god pack home in Hamilton Heights. The underground space was familiar to everyone else from the times all the alphas had been summoned to meetings. He’d seen the aftermath of fights held in other challenge rings to know they were bloody spaces. He agreed with Amelia though—no fight held in a space controlled by Estelle and Youssef could be handled fairly.

“I’m not sure how much help the fae will be able to provide right now. Tiarnán was summoned to Tír na nÓg today on an emergency basis. He’s been our liaison for the fae, and I don’t know when he’ll return,” Sage said.

Patrick shrugged. “His absence shouldn’t affect the alliance. We—”

A loud explosion in the bar above cut him off, magic crashing against the wards embedded in Tempest’s walls. They flashed fire bright for a split second, nearly blinding Patrick. Before the glow faded, Patrick was on his feet and racing for the stairs, Jono right on his heels. The crowd of alphas peeled away from his headlong rush forward, giving them both space.

 My review:

4.5 stars

An Echo in the Sorrow by Hailey Turner is Book 6 in the ‘Soulbond’ series that features god pack alpha werewolf Jonothan de Vere and his lover and co-pack leader, mage and Special Agent Patrick Collins. The pair continue to deal with the threats to their leadership as violence escalates in New York City, but the pack dire, Sage, is determined that nothing is going to ruin her wedding…not even the gods’ pesky machinations.

This gay paranormal romance series continues to enthrall, with its fantastical adventures and deft blending of various pantheons that continue to complicate the lives of the main characters. The tale picks up after the momentous struggles in the previous story and its surprising revelation at the end. More gods and demigods are drawn into the struggle that is taking place on a couple of levels, and the city is unwittingly drawn into the civil war that has erupted as Jon and Patrick try to cement their pack’s hold. I love that Wade the dragon is continuing to evolve in his position as part of the family and pack although I can’t quite understand his fascination with pop tarts, lol.

As always, this story is exciting and immediately draws the reader in to cheer for the main characters, has plenty of secondary characters who are intriguing enough to hopefully get their own storylines occasionally, and provides a unique look at a familiar city through a paranormal lens. Those who have not read the other books in the series should probably start at the beginning in order to better appreciate some of the events and revelations in this story. The tension continues to rise, and I can’t wait to find out which new pantheons get involved in the mix as the quest continues.
