The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman (Review)

The Invisible Library
by Genevieve Cogman

4 out of 5 stars

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman is the first book in the fantasy ‘Invisible Library’ series and features Irene, a Librarian whose main goal in life is to “just find a good book to read” and everything she does is in pursuit of that goal. Her assignment to retrieve a manuscript from a quarantined destination is complicated by her new protégé, Kai, whose opinions and attitude don’t quite reflect his purported role. Add in a vicious rival, less-than-helpful contact persons, a society that is engaged in a deadly power struggle, oh, and a troublesome possible super-villain, and one has to wonder, what exactly is in this book she is tasked with retrieving?

What bibliophile could resist a story that features Librarians as intrepid explorers and protectors of unique printed works of fiction? I love that there is a special Language that is used for all kinds of remarkable functions and that there are multiple alternate worlds that are gradually unveiled. The fascinating combination of steampunk, biology, and magic that is characteristic of the world Irene and Kai are assigned to gives delightful unexpected twists (who knew vampires had an issue with sticky rice, lol) as well as some fairly creepy experiences. The introduction to the various factions and the mysterious characters who may be allies or enemies keep one guessing.

I think this author did a great job of creating a new and exciting universe with intriguing characters faced with unique dilemmas. I was a little disappointed that more things weren’t tied up more completely but I understand the desire to keep one invested in the series. Kai fascinates me, as he represents a type of character I have always been fond of, and I look forward to learning much more about him in the future. It is difficult to establish a series without overwhelming the reader with too much detail but I wish there had been a little more exposition about some of the characters and look forward to reading the subsequent books in the series.

From Prussia With Love by Tina Christopher (VBT, guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

It is my pleasure to have a guest post from (well-traveled) author Tina Christopher who shares...

My Cunning Plan to Visit All the Continents
  by Tina Christopher

Hello there! I’m so delighted to visit. Thank you for having me, ELF.

I love to travel. Not too long ago I took stock and realised I’ve made it to four continents so far. That leaves three, but as I will never ever want to visit Antarctica (I severely dislike the cold;), there’re really only two continents left.

I grew up in Europe and had plenty of opportunity to explore. Some of my favourite destinations include Rome, Nice and the Costa del Sol. I’ve also taken a lovely trip to the Sweden and cycled around the south of Ireland.

It’s funny how you never appreciate what you’re surrounded by. While living in Germany and England all I wanted to do was go and visit North America. Now that I live in Toronto I wish I had taken more time to appreciate the beauty in my back garden.

A few years ago (I will not say how many because it’s always a bit of a shock to realise how much time has passed;) I spent three months in South Africa as a conservation volunteer. This meant I saw the game reserves I stayed at from a very different perspective. You could say I had a bit of a behind-the-scenes view. One of my favourite memories is the first time I saw an elephant and that time when Mummy rhino introduced baby rhino to one of the single males roaming the reserve. At another location I injected a hyena with a vitamin boost before it was transported to a new site and saw the strength of vultures up close and personal.

As a tween living in Germany I read an author who unfortunately was never translated into English. Federica de Cesco was married to a Japanese photographer and must have lived in every country on the planet (or that's what it felt like to me;). She wrote YA fiction set across the world (I’d definitely call her the Queen of Diversity), but her books set in Japan in particular took my breath away.  I read about Japan’s history, their customs and dreamed of visiting. My opportunity came a few years ago when a friend was living in Hong Kong. I went to visit her and on my way back stopped in Tokyo and Kyoto for just over a week. It was utterly incredible! I would love to go back and see more of the country.

BLURB:

Clara Redbeck has one goal: to prove to the sods at work—and to herself—that the best man for the job can be a woman. To do that, she must prevent a traitor from blowing London to bits. If only the dashing first mate of the dirigible she’d been tasked to plunder didn’t set her aflame.

Garrett Dewhurst has one goal: to execute the coup of a lifetime. His plans do not include a spanking dalliance with the most intriguing woman he has ever met.

With each encounter, the fire between them burns hotter and their need grows stronger. Finally, the cramped cabin aboard the Bismarck becomes their intimate playground, where Garrett introduces Clara to the pleasure of submission and they explore their passion in every way possible.

Clara and Garrett want a future together, but each holds a secret that if revealed could cost them everything. When danger closes in, they have to choose between protecting themselves or the whole of London.

EXCERPT

She didn’t respond. Instead she studied him from the tips of his boots to the top of his head and every inch in between. Heat spread through his body, unexpected and not completely welcome.

Then she mirrored his stance right down to the raised eyebrow.

Unable to help himself, he smiled.

It had been a very, very long time since a woman had intrigued him after exchanging just a few sentences. She took his breath away and made him want to laugh. Judging by her frown, this was not the response she’d expected.

Garrett turned to Jens. “I believe you have other passengers to look after. I’ll take care of Miss Riesenbeck and anything she may require.”

Jens nodded. He bowed to both of them and practically ran away.

“I don’t know if I should be insulted at the speed of his departure or pat his cheek.”

Garrett chuckled. “Neither. I just think you are too much woman for him. He wouldn’t know how to handle you.”

She widened her eyes. “And you do?”

He curved his lips and knew his smile carried an edge. “Would you like me to prove it?”

She scrutinized him, leaving him hanging on the lip of the abyss, waiting for her response.

“Give me the tour Jens had promised to escort me on, and I will let you know at the end.”

Challenge curled through him. He bowed lightly but continued to hold her gaze captive. “Please step into my cargo hold.”

Her smile lit up her face. Her beauty was not conventional, but in that moment, it grabbed him by the throat. “Said the spider to the fly.”

“Will you step into my web?”

She turned around and threw a glance over her shoulder. “That has yet to be determined.” She strode to the door, and Garrett fell into step behind her.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Tina Christopher spent her early years flitting across the Channel between Germany and England. After touring the world extensively—from hanging out with elephants in South Africa to hiking through the wilderness in Alaska—she finally laid down roots in Toronto. Although Canada’s winters may be frigid, Tina’s characters are anything but!

Like most writers, Tina often hears voices in her head, but it took the encouragement of an editor friend to have her actually put fingers to keyboard. While those first stories will never see the light of day, she’s subsequently honed her craft and learned to build not just worlds, but entire galaxies. History has always been an area of interest for her, and she’s enjoys few things more than imagining what could happen when history and future meet.

When not imagining far-away worlds and scorching-hot encounters, Tina can be found on her sofa working through her never-ending TBR pile or venturing into the real world—whether to a nearby café or a passport-required destination. She’s a member of the Romance Writers of America Toronto chapter and looks forward to where her characters take her next!

A Study in Ashes by Emma Jane Holloway (review) (and a reminder about Brenda Novak's fundraiser)

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who celebrate...whether you are mom to humans or fur-persons or feathery people!

Blurb:

As part of her devil’s bargain with the industrial steam barons, Evelina Cooper is finally enrolled in the Ladies’ College of London. However, she’s attending as the Gold King’s pet magician, handcuffed and forbidden contact with even her closest relation, the detective Sherlock Holmes.

But Evelina’s problems are only part of a larger war. The Baskerville affair is finally coming to light, and the rebels are making their move to wrest power from the barons and restore it to Queen Victoria. Missing heirs and nightmare hounds are the order of the day—or at least that’s what Dr. Watson is telling the press.

But their plans are doomed unless Evelina escapes to unite her magic with the rebels’ machines—and even then her powers aren’t what they used to be. A sorcerer has awakened a dark hunger in Evelina’s soul, and only he can keep her from endangering them all. The only problem is . . . he’s dead.

A Study in Ashes by Emma Jane Holloway is the exciting conclusion to ‘The Baskerville Affair’ trilogy which is a wonderfully textured and multi-layered steampunk series. The remarkable Evelina Cooper lives up to the reputation of her famous uncles, Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes as she applies the deductive techniques and adaptability that they have bequeathed to her even as she struggles to harness the arcane and ofttimes dark aspects of her power. The puppet-masters, including the manipulative Gold King who has entrapped not only Evelina but her former love, Tobias Roth, brother of her best friend, Imogen, continue to pull strings but those are becoming frighteningly tangled. The events that are depicted in the second book of this series, “A Study in Darkness” have provided Evelina with the opportunity to attend college but the cost has been much too high and the world around her is in major upheaval, forcing her to decide what she truly values in life. The rebellion continues to gain momentum but it is possible that there will be no kingdom to rule once all of the factions come into play.
This intricately woven tale continues to enthrall with its depiction of a remarkable society where progress in mechanical and chemical sciences intersect with manipulations using magic and arcane elements. The delightful utilization of key elements from the Sherlock Holmes tales are very entertaining as the unique twists only possible in this particular version of the universe are applied, including the appearances of the inimical Moriarty and the infamous Hound of the Baskervilles. The various threads that have been dangled, including the struggle for possession of Imogen’s body, the fate of the charismatic Captain Niccolo and his beloved deva Athena, the machinations of Lord Bancroft, Tobias’ ethical and personal challenges, Evelina’s thirst for knowledge and fear of her powers and the overall fight for control of England itself are all (relatively) neatly tied off with quite a few unexpected developments.

I think that I particularly enjoyed the glimpses of the Holmes brothers as Sherlock revels in irritating his brother Mycroft, sets out to teach and confound the faithful Watson, and reluctantly faces his attachment to his talented niece. The various romantic relationships present throughout the series have all definitely had their rough phases and I am reminded that this is not a romance with a guaranteed happily ever after ending. The fantastical inventions are memorable (although a few are a bit stomach-churning) and do a wonderful job of bringing the story full circle as the inventive mind that helped create the infamous mechanical squid brings yet another creature to life.

This story is a delicious masterpiece of vivid imagery and breathtaking adventure, reminiscent of the old matinee adventures, and a highly entertaining and thought-provoking tale. The various players have to make very difficult choices and face harsh introspection as a result of those choices, with sometimes very unpalatable results, just like real life. It is very strongly advised that one start with the first book in the series to best savor this story but be forewarned that all are weighty tomes (but well worth reading). An excellent tale from an author with a wondrously fertile imagination, I can’t wait to find out what else has been percolating in her mind!

(If you can't tell, I really enjoyed this series and got a little carried away with my review(s)...my review of the first in the series, A Study in Silks is at this link and my review of the second A Study in Darkness is at this link (or you could just scroll back to yesterday's post, lol).

A Note From Brenda Novak:
Dear Reader:
I can’t tell you how excited I am to bring you this boxed set. I have long admired so many of the authors who are partnering with me on this project, and have been excited to get to know those who are new to me. Every one of them was so generous when I emailed to see if they’d be willing to take part. They all got back to me almost immediately with an enthusiastic YES!
I’m grateful to you, too, for purchasing this set because it is enabling me to raise even more money for diabetes research. For those of you who might not be aware, my youngest son has this disease. He was diagnosed when he was just five years old. Shortly after that, I started Brenda Novak’s Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research, which is running now at http://brendanovak.auctionanything.com. So far, thanks to the support of both my shoppers and my donors, I’ve been able to raise more than $2 million–and this is our big 10-year anniversary, so we are hoping to raise those totals a lot higher. You are now part of that endeavor! If you would like to be more involved, please register for the auction and jump into the fun. We have nearly 2,000 fabulous items up for grabs (all starting at just $3).  Those who support the auction are a community of warm, giving people who are dedicated to making the world a better place, and we’d love to have you join us. “Many hands make light work,” as the saying goes….
I’d like to give a special shout out to Lauren Hawkeye, who also has a book in this collection. She helped me with the auction for many years before her own son was diagnosed, at just two years old. For obvious reasons, this is a cause near and dear to both our hearts. I’d also like to extend a special thank you to my publisher, Harlequin Enterprises, who generously licensed three works to me in order to make this collection become a reality (the book by me and the novellas by Susan Wiggs and Susan Mallery).
I recently heard a frightening statistic–that one in three Americans will have diabetes by 2050. That’s crazy, right? I hope the Diabetes Research Institute, which is the recipient of the money we raise, will be able to find a cure soon. I think they are well on their way and pray that what we are doing will help them a great deal.
Here’s to making a difference!
