“First, you should know about your family, Jackson,” Father began.
“He does know about his family,” Mother said under her breath.
Father ignored her and continued. “There are Channings all over England, mostly distant relations and you needn’t be overly concerned with them.”
“Although it is nice to know they exist,” Lucy said.
“Exactly.” Father nodded. “And I dare say you’ll meet them all eventually.”
    “I really don’t see –“ Mother began.
“Quiet Mother.” Jack nodded at his father. “Go on.”
“For the most part, they’re not especially important although admittedly some of them are most amusing. Eccentric is probably the kindest description.” The colonel lowered his voice in a confidential manner. “There is Cousin Wilfred on my father’s side. He was quite convinced he could fly. He couldn’t of course. Pity, as it turned out.” Father shook his head in a regretful manner. “But as I was saying, you needn’t bother concerning yourself with anyone aside from the immediate family. At least for now.”
    “The immediate family?” Jack said.
“You my boy, have an uncle, my twin brother, Nigel, and an aunt, his wife Bernadette. They have three daughters, charming girls all of them. They’ve grown up quite nicely, all things considered. Oddly enough, I am not the only brother whose wife preferred to let his offspring believe he was dead.”
    Lucy stared.
“Although in Nigel’s case, he did rather deserve it. But that’s neither here nor there at the moment.” Father’s brow furrowed thoughtfully. “Let me thin. The eldest girls are older than you and are twins. One is married, the other a widow and about to be married again. The youngest, Delilah, is also a widow. So you can see how the revelation that I have a son changes, well, everything. Especially the future. The family’s and yours.”
“Basil.” A warning sounded in Mother’s voice. ‘This is not how I wanted –“
“It no longer matters what you want Elizabeth. You’ve had what you wanted for far too long.” Father cast her a hard look.
“I’m not certain I understand,” Jack said slowly. “I know I am as shocked by your existence as you are by mine. And this does change a lot, for any number of reasons. But while it certainly is significant, in a personal sense, I fail to see what effect my having a living father, and you having a son has on your future or mine. Not that I don’t like the idea mind you,” he added quickly. “It would be different if we were having this, oh, reunion I suppose is the only word for it, when I was ten years old or even twenty. Burt I am an adult. I have a position of responsibility at the bank and a sound, solid career ahead of me there. My future is well planned out.”
“Exactly,” Mother said under her breath.
“It might well have been planned out yesterday or this morning or even a few hours ago but now…” His father’s gaze me his. “Now your future is entirely different.”
Jack drew his brows together. “I still don’t see-“
“My brother is the Earl of Briston.” Father paused to allow the others to grasp the significance of his pronouncement.
“Jackson, your uncle is an earl,” Lucy said with delight. “How very interesting.”
“It’s more than merely interesting my dear girl,” Father said. “I know it’s not the same in your country-“
“We don’t have earls for one thing.” Mother sniffed.
“But in my country”-he met Jack’s gaze-“your country as well titles and property are often tied together in what is called an entailment. Are you familiar with it?”
“Vaguely.” Jack nodded. “We deal on occasion with English financial institutions and I’ve seen reference to it in correspondence. It has to do with inheritance doesn’t it?”
“Exactly.” His father studied him closely. “A title is tied to a family’s property, they are passed on together. In our case, Millworth Manor, the estate that has been in our family for generations, as well as some other properties, are tied to the title. The title can only be inherited by the closest male relative. If my brother died, I would be next in line to be the Earl of Briston. If I died..”
    Lucy gasped.
    Mother sighed.
Jack stared. “Are you saying that I would be the next earl?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.” Father nodded. “And thank God, too. We were all afraid Millworth and the title would eventually go to Wilfred’s son.” He shuddered. “And believe me no one wanted that.”

She turned to writing full time and has never looked back. Victoria grew up traveling the country as an Air Force brat and is now settled in a very old house in Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two allegedly grown children and two bearded collies. Coloring Animal Mandalas by Wendy Piersall and Zen Doodling Mandalas by Carolyn Scrace (reviews)

Ok, so there's a theme here...I love to color although I haven't had as much time to indulge lately as I would like, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to review these two books.  Both are such fun!

Coloring Animal Mandalas by Wendy Piersall is a beautiful collection of drawings that can be colored. Each drawing is printed on white paper and is comprised of a multitude of repetitive shapes that combine to form all kinds of creatures, some a bit more fantastical than others. This is a great way to stimulate creative ideas in both adults and children as one can both mindlessly color in the various small sections and allow one’s mind to wander or carefully plot out a sequence of colors such as those illustrated on the front and back covers. I think that colored pencils or fine markers are the most useful for these particular drawings as some of the areas are very tiny, and there are so many permutations that can be chosen for these beautiful creatures that each drawing will be a unique work of art. This will provide hours of entertainment and allow the artist in all of us a chance to flourish.

Zen Doodling Mandalas by Carolyn Scrace is a wonderful and inspirational book that encourages all of us who are prone to idly scribble loops and curves and lines when we are caught on hold or stuck waiting in a place where we are unable to politely take out a book and read!  The author has beautifully illustrated pages that center around the mandala, or sacred circle.  The author indicates that Buddhist monks create intricate mandalas with sand and then destroy them to symbolize the impermanence of existence, putting the sand into water to share the blessing.  It is a remarkable application of art and the book carefully details the way to start with parts of the whole and build upon each aspect to make a masterpiece of artwork.  There are instructions on utilizing color to enhance the effects created but I actually just had a ball doodling on pieces of paper.  I can see how one can meditate and free oneself from the cares of the day by getting lost in the curves and flow of this exquisite artwork that allows even a non-talented person such as myself to create a fun and multifaceted piece of art.

Indulging in Autumn’s Rainy Days
by Vicki Batman

Hopefully, you have blue skies and the air is crisp with fall

But what we really need is rain. I love rainy weekends when I can throw a light blanket on me and hit the couch. I grab the channel changer and head to the movie stations and settle in for a long stretch, the requisite diet drink and popcorn by my side.  Sometimes, I'll haul out my needlepoint and watch and work. The hours slip by as I go from one movie to the next.
Once, Handsome asked me what I wanted for my birthday. He laughed when I named two girly movies, popcorn, and a cold drink. No boys. No man. No housework. Nothing. Just me and my movies.

It was a really great day.

Besides watching old movies when a drip-drip is coming down, I like a really great book I cannot put down. I'm carried along, and before I know it, The End. A day all for me.

When I was younger and we had bad weather, I had built-in playmates in my three sisters. We played a lot of board games, card games, did puzzles, and read. Sometimes, the non-network TV station showed a really good old movie. Sometimes, we baked cookies or other treats.

Seems like we all need a drizzly day to slow down from our hectic pace and get back to ourselves. To indulge just a bit. To laugh with loved one. To read.

What do you indulge in when you have a rainy day?

Excerpt:

“Yuck.”

Pretty much covered the whole freakin’ day.

A blinding red-white, red-white strobe, reflected in my brand new Wrangler’s rearview mirror, seized my attention. The police. I tossed my hands skyward, ready to surrender. I shouldn’t have been too surprised. Like I'd commented this a.m. to my roommate, Jenny, “Today, anything’s possible.”

My Bad Day checklist included:

- Crappy job interview, one which might have provided desperately needed income.

- Wore gut-busting panty hose on a hot day which had now worked past my waist and strangled my diaphragm.

- A barely blowing air conditioner indicated something had malfunctioned in my new, fun car.

I stole another glance in the mirror, and with great reluctance, flipped the right turn indicator. My vehicle coasted to a stop on the shoulder of Boston Avenue in my hometown of Sommerville, a nice suburb located between two large cities. Four lanes of cars and trucks zipped by as I sat there where every single one of my family, friends, friends’ friends, and their friends—including Rat Fink Suzanne—would see a police vehicle positioned right behind mine. Gleefully, drivers would chant the “Ha-ha, got you, not me” ditty.

How embarrassing.

After killing the engine, I flopped back in the seat. Shooting the morons the finger was an idea. Nah. I'm too exhausted to care.

A litany of: "No, not hiring." "Just filled the position." "You're over qualified." "You're under qualified…" tornadoed through my head. Coupled with the intense job search through various outlets like the internet and completing numerous online employment applications, no wonder my body had been depleted of all life force.

Not even a breeze blew to take the edge off the unbearable summertime heat. Tangled wild trees and dry scrubby bushes banked the roadside. The grass had taken on a scorched look. Rolling down the driver’s window, I surveyed my surroundings. Nothing great. Nothing new.

I stole a glance in the side mirror at the policeman who strode purposefully along the shoulder. The gravel crunched under his boots. He looked huge, probably because his uniform, which appeared to be bulked with a bullet-proof vest, made him resemble a buffed-up superhero in size. Exceedingly intimidating.

Sigh. When things went wrong, they were really wrong.
