How to Catch A Cowboy by Sandra Madden (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by Sandra Madden

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Western Historical
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Matilda Rose Applebee isn't looking for love when she captures Cooper T. Davis at gunpoint. Her younger sister is in the family way and claims Cooper is responsible. Matilda aims to haul the snake-belly back to her sister's waiting arms. But Cooper insists Matty's sister is mistaken as they begin a long and dangerous journey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Matilda Rose Applebee had bided her time until she figured the fast-talking drummer had passed out. No more than a silver-tongued swindler, Cooper T. Davis drifted from town to town selling patent medicine. Until now. Marty was about to put an end to his nefarious career. With the element of surprise on her side, she'd slipped into his room, Winchester at the ready.
The man was snoring loud enough to cover the noise of a stampeding herd of cattle, let alone one small woman.
She hissed in his ear.
He moaned and pulled the pillow over his head.
"Git up, varmit."
"Go away," he mumbled.
"You're comin' with me now to marry my sister or I'm makin' her a widow. Take your choice."
Before she could stick the rifle in his ribs to show him she meant business, the shad-belly rolled over, away from Matilda. He didn't even bother to open his eyes.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
This mostly truthful biography is longer than most of my books. But the older you become, it seems the more there is to say.  Whether it’s important or not.  Whether anyone is listening.
I was born in New York City but raised in Winthrop, Massachusetts, a small isthmus that juts into the Atlantic Ocean five miles north of Boston. During the long cold winters – read REALLY COLD! – I read and I wrote. My favorite authors were Bronte and Austin before they became required reading. I wrote stories to amuse myself which led to writing the 6th grade school play. When I discovered drama classes in the ninth grade, I gave up writing for a few years. And, yes, I was the perky cheerleader who played Emily in Our Town.  Not a dry eye in the house!
Following high school graduation my family moved to the warmer climate of South Florida - just when I was getting acclimated to the constant cold.
At the University of Miami, I majored in Radio/TV/Film. (As the program was called in those days - and one of the first departments of its kind in the nation.) I minored in drama. For three of my four years in college I acted in thirty- minute radio dramas almost on a weekly basis. Inevitably these live broadcasts of Theater X were love stories in which I played the heroine. Usually, the tragic heroine. I credit this experience as having set me on a course of no return. Romance and fantasy became my fate.
But first I experienced a short-lived career as a broadcast journalist. I was too far ahead of my time to fight the slings and arrows of the newsmens’ contempt, so I switched. I became a broadcast copy/promotional writer and worked in the Miami and Los Angeles markets. But my most rewarding work was as a writer/producer/host for a Miami PBS station. (Due to the public broadcasting budget each person is expected to fill a variety of roles for one salary. One small salary.) I focused on How-To series, public affairs – of the political kind - and women’s issues. During this time I met many inspiring women who shared their stories with me, women whose remarkable achievements, great spirits and strength influenced my work as I started to write. First, I became a published poet. It didn’t take much time for me to write short verses.
As with most writers, I wrote my first historical novels in the evenings after my day job. A second wind is required to do this and it magically appears with the passion for writing.
Passion for the writing and persistence in submitting are the keys to becoming a published author.  The secrets of the sisterhood gleaned from lessons learned along the way.
Not long after being published I discovered that a writer’s life is not all about the voices in your head demanding release to a page – frequently at an inopportune time. And it’s not all about three figure contracts, champagne tours and as much chocolate as you can consume. Oh. No. A writer’s life includes thundering deadlines, dry spells, assorted blocks, carpal tunnel syndrome and frozen shoulders. Occasionally, the green-eyed monster rears her head and wraps grown women in knots. But most of all, writing romance is a wonderful love story in itself. There is nothing else a romance writer would rather be doing. She is totally in love with romance and with the ability to share her stories with gracious readers. Thank you, dear reader.
Praise for A Lady’s Code of Misconduct:
“Political intrigue and conspiracies abound in Duran’s engrossing fifth Rules for the Reckless Victorian romance (after Luck Be a Lady), which boasts plot twists galore…Duran is at the pinnacle of her craft as she weaves together humor, forgiveness, and love in a flawlessly executed plot. Jane, Crispin, and the rest of the characters are all well drawn, and the love scenes strike the perfect balance of steamy and sweet. Each layer in the story is suspenseful and delightful, making this the best installment so far.”
Publishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW
“A sham marriage, political intrigue, and a case of amnesia provide a backdrop for this absorbing Victorian romance. Although Duran (Luck Be a Lady, 2015, etc.) has written a novel as layered as an onion, the characters are well-drawn and the plot flawlessly executed. Add in some very steamy sex, and the fifth installment of Duran's Rules for the Reckless series can't help but delight. This book weaves its spell so thoroughly that the most fortunate reader will be the one who has time to read the entire thing in one sitting. A masterful tale of suspense, forgiveness, and love.”
Kirkus STARRED REVIEW
“Political intrigue drives a captivating historical romance…This Regency romance, part of the Rules for the Reckless series, is a smart love story, peopled with complex and absorbing characters.”
BookPage, TOP PICK IN ROMANCE
“A riveting story.”
—Heroes and Heartbreakers
“A masterful author of historical romances…A Lady’s Code of Misconduct takes worn threads of old tropes, like amnesia and the tortured hero, and weaves them into a lush tapestry with sophisticated, beautiful writing. Crispin seems power-mad and Jane seems saintly, but as Duran slowly unravels their characters amidst a plot of intrigue, betrayal, and dark secrets, we discover they’re more alike than they (or we) realize. The hero is swoonworthy, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with Jane as his flaws shine a light on her own. The tale and characters so captivated me, that I literally couldn’t put it down.”
Omnivoracious Amazon Book Review by Sabrina Jeffries
“Thoughtfully written and the story creates not just a simple story of two people but an entire world for them to inhabit. If you like your historicals to have some meat to them, I highly recommend this one.”
—All About Romance
“Extremely relevant to our current political state…I could have easily sat and devoured this in one evening as each of the chapters seemed to end on a cliffhanger that just won't let you put the book down. Quill says: A Lady’s Code of Misconduct is the perfect book to sit in your favorite chair with and let the world pass by for a little while you get lost in the past.”
Feathered Quill
I absolutely love this series… Meredith writes intelligent characters with a fast paced plot.  Her writing is sensual, witty and totally captivating.  This book has everything you would want in a Historical Romance.   It is witty, sensual with a mystery that will keep you guessing to the very end. Crispin and Jane are extraordinary characters in a riveting story that will leave you wanting more.  The journey of Crispin and Jane to their HAE is fabulous.  I will read anything that Meredith writes.”
—The Reading Wench
“A fun read. I enjoyed Duran’s characters and plot…there’s a villain who made me think of a Regency era James Bond villain.”
—Bookfan
Taming the Texas Beauty by Jody Vitek (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author Jody Vitek, who shares...
What scares you the most or makes you the happiest about writing?
by Jody Vitek
I’m going to be real honest. Receiving a review scares me the most when it comes to writing. If you ask any author or publisher, they’ll tell you that you need reviews to sell books. With the market overflowing with authors, it is very difficult to get reviews. I do experience a little anxiety when I receive a review. Did they like it? How many stars did they give the book? Were they nice in their review giving constructive criticism? Sometimes I have to remind myself that not everyone is going to like my story. We all have different tastes.
My wish would be that more readers leave book reviews. For me, it’s not so much for me to sell more books but for me to gauge how I’m doing as a writer. I love to hear from my readers. What book and or character is their favorite? What scene moved them or maybe reminded them of their own life.
Do you want to know how I handle the negative reviews? Because you know it can’t be as easy as just letting go. Well, as I said, I’m going to be honest. It’s not easy. It hurts. As writers, we agonize over every word, every sentence, every paragraph, every scene, every chapter until we think we have it right. Then we send the book to our editor who spends hours to help make the words better. Stronger. I might get upset at the reviewer and complain to my husband or fellow writer friends. I might cry, not often. Sometimes I question myself as a writer and if I should keep writing.
So how do I bounce back? My friends reassure me that I’m a good writer and tell me not to give up. I read the positive reviews to pick me up from my doldrums. Sometimes, I have an adult beverage to help wash the pain away. Other times, I’ll take a break from writing and watch a good romance flick, or maybe scrapbook to use the other creative side of my brain.
Being a published author isn’t easy. If you’re a writer aiming for publication, make sure you have a good support group and remember the positives outweigh the negatives. Really, they do.
I want to end this on what makes me the happiest about writing. It is very simple – seeing my books published and available for others to enjoy. That makes me happy each and every time a book is released. The joy hasn’t changed from my first release, Florida Heat to my current fifth release, Taming the Texas Beauty.
Thank you for visiting. Since I’m being real, is there a question you want to ask me about my writing or books?
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
BLURB:
Two years ago, Ryan Rogers was attracted to Stephanie Lockhart, but as the detective who brought down her criminal brother, getting close to her was out of the question. Now, ready to restart the relationship, he discovers her salon is connected to a series of high-end robberies.
In spite of losing her brother because of Detective Rogers, Stephanie hasn’t forgotten their attraction. It could be happily ever after when they meet once again…until she and her salon are implicated in crime, sending her world spiraling out of control.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

“I’m sorry to have brought it up, but at the salon you seemed to have put distance between us. And seeing you…I wanted to talk to you. Over the phone or in text wouldn’t have been right.” He glanced at his hands.

“Your turn.” She rested her hand on his forearm. “Why didn’t you call me?”

“We were busy with your brother’s investigation, as well as other cases. I couldn’t get involved with you while working on your brother’s case. When the time came around that I could’ve called you, I figured it was too late. A girl like you doesn’t wait around for a guy.”

“No, I didn’t wait around.” She removed her hand. “And what kind of girl am I, Ryan Rogers?” She relaxed against the back cushion and crossed her legs. Waiting. Waiting for his response.

“You’re beautiful and smart. You run your own business. Come from a wealthy, well-known family, and could have any man you wanted.”

She lurched forward with a laugh before raising an eyebrow. “Any man I want, huh? Your brother turned me away when he was single.”

Ryan sat upright. “You—my brother?”

“We kissed, then he kicked me out of his hotel room. So no, I can’t have any man I want. And you didn’t want me either.”

“I never said I didn’t want you. We never got beyond the phone number exchange.” He raised his voice, frustrated with the situation. “What if I told you I want you now? What if I took you into the bedroom and followed through on your handcuff suggestion?”

As soon as she lands, however, Akyra learns the hard way that rival factions have a lot to gain by seeing her fail, no matter what the cost…

Can Akyra, running from her past, learn to lose control of the one thing holding her back, her own heart?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
“You’d give all this up?” Raemus pointed to the cluttered mess of the vehicle maintenance shed they’d been facing the whole time, “for a family?”
Akyra shrugged. “Family isn’t an option anymore.” She rubbed the birth control bolt deep in the skin of her shoulder, the one engineered with a homing beacon that would bring arrest, conviction, and death if removed from her body. “Being really good at fighting for The Church is all I got.” She felt pressure behind her eyes, and her nose began to itch, but she shook it off. “That’s why I’m the best commander I can be.” Akyra rubbed her hands against the intensifying cold. “What’s your excuse?”
Raemus didn’t miss any signs of sadness spreading over Akyra’s body, the slight slouch, the successive blinks, the three irregular deep breaths. “I’m with you,” he said. “I get it. When shooting bad guys gets you through the day, might as well become the best at it.”
She laughed through the frog in her throat. “Yes. Exactly.”
“Well, let’s see… I can let you shoot Levi over there if that’ll make you feel any better.”
She blurted out a big laugh.
Her smile! Raemus thought. Rich and honest. So… real.
