Gore in the Garden by Colleen J. Shogan (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

 Colleen J. Shogan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After her boss narrowly escaped political defeat, Kit Marshall is settling into life as a busy congressional staffer. While attending an evening reception at the United States Botanic Garden, Kit’s best friend stumbles upon the body of a high-ranking government official. The chairwoman of a congressional committee asks Kit to investigate, and she finds herself once again in the thick of a murder investigation. The complications keep coming with the unexpected arrival of Kit’s younger brother Sebastian, a hippie protestor who seems more concerned about corporate greed than the professional problems he causes for his sister. To make matters even worse, the romantic lives of Kit’s closest friends are driving her crazy, diverting her attention from the mystery she’s been tasked to solve. The search for the killer requires her to tussle with an investigative journalist right out of a noir novel, a congresswoman fixated on getting a statue of James Madison installed on the Capitol grounds, and a bossy botanist who would do anything to protect the plants he loves. When the murderer sends a threatening message to Kit via a highly unusual delivery mechanism, Kit knows she must find the killer or risk the lives of her friends and loved ones.

Sebastian, Doug, and I drifted back to the sidewalk outside the butterfly garden. “Tell me more about your friend Meg,” said Sebastian. His eyes sparkled with interest.

“She’s not dating these days,” I said quickly. “Let’s not go there.”

“Meg is attractive,” said Doug. “But I’m not sure she’s your type. I don’t see her taking to the streets anytime soon to protest the world’s injustices.”

“Not unless the protest was taking place inside Nordstrom’s,” I said. “If you could arrange that location for a demonstration, then you persuade her to make an appearance.”

Doug and Sebastian both chuckled. But their laughter was interrupted suddenly by a bloodcurdling scream from inside the conservatory.

“That sounds like Meg!” I exclaimed. “Come on.”

We rushed over to the entrance, pulled open the door, and entered the garden court. Meg was standing next to the blooming corpse flower. I didn’t even notice the odor because I was fixated on her terrified face.

I ran to her and put my hands on her shoulders. “Meg, what’s wrong? It looks like you’ve just seen a ghost.”

“Worse than that,” she sputtered, gesturing wildly behind her.

“Is something wrong inside the tropical rain forest?” I asked.

“You could say so,” Meg gasped. “Someone’s dead.”

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

Gore in the Garden by Colleen J. Shogan is Book 5 in the ‘Washington Whodunit’ series that feature Kit Marshall, Congresswoman Dixon’s chief of staff. An exclusive opportunity to see the rare blooming of the plant known as the corpse flower becomes all too apropos when Kit’s best friend and fellow staff member discovers a body. This time, even more of the family gets involved in the investigation as Kit’s husband, brother, and dog all become embroiled in the case.

This fun cozy mystery truly gives an insider view of Washington D.C. and the machinations of some of its denizens. As usual, Kit tries to navigate the delicate pathway between appeasing those in power, refraining from antagonizing anyone who could become (or already is) an important player, and maintaining a harmonious personal life while solving a murder mystery. Although I appreciate the authenticity of the details that permeate the story, at times I felt a bit overwhelmed by them and would rather have had a bit more connection to the characters. I like that Kit is growing in confidence, although I was a bit surprised that the detective who she is always thrown into contact with during the course of her investigations has evidently given up and welcomes her interference, ahem, assistance. Despite the widespread influence of the players in this environment, this still has the small town feel of a cozy mystery, and I was happy to read another tale from this series. Those who are unfamiliar with the series may want to read one or two (or four) of the previous stories to get a bit more oriented, but you can probably get by reading this as a stand-alone story. I look forward to seeing what other complicated situations Kit gets into in the future, as well as learning about other obscure locations in the nation’s capital.

Excerpt

Keeping his mind on the topic always took all of Alex’s effort anyway. When Charlotte sat hip-to-hip with him as she had today, he felt the heat of her skin, saw the long length of thigh exposed in front of him, heard her heavy post-run breathing until he was in sensory overload. She smelled so good, not stinky and sweaty like he must. She smelled classy and expensive with all those clean, floral scents. She smelled like a woman he could trust.

More like a woman I want to trust.

Thinking back, Alex recognized that she had been hiding something all along. When he wasn’t lost in a sensual fog, he was able to zero in on where the conversations lagged, when she got testy with his probing or tried to change the subject. It had something to do with her life in Boston before she moved to Chicago and it was something that had been going on for a while. She was practiced at her excuses by the time she used them on him. She was making too many trips back East for ‘Harvard stuff.’ She had met Regan Howe through this same ‘Harvard stuff’ yet Regan went back to her alma mater only once or twice a year, if that.

Oh yeah, Charlotte is definitely up to something and I intend to find out what. I have been patient long enough.

Sitting waiting now for Charlotte to arrive at Starbucks, Alex promised himself that he would get to the bottom of this or walk away.

Since she had declined his offer of a ride, Alex currently sat at a shady outside table enjoying the last of summer, waiting for her to walk over and speculating on her possible secrets. He was planning his subtle interrogation during the few minutes Charlotte would need to make her way across the park,

Stubborn. She should have just accepted the ride.

You driving over or walking?” she had asked him, once they caught their breath.

“I have the car if you want a ride?” When she hesitated, he tried tempting her. “I have the new car.”

Alex was the proud owner of a brand new Mercedes AMG. The sleek, luxury sports car suited him despite most people’s image of him as logical, conservative and staid. The need for speed was actually deep in his blood. “You will love it, tight on the curves, fast and quiet. She purrs,” he had bragged.

Charlotte hesitated on his last remark and Alex had been sure she would accept. “The new car, huh?” she sounded intrigued. “I am excited to see it at last, Alex. You have certainly been talking about it long enough.”

“I need to walk off this tight hamstring, so I’ll have to pass this time,” she had replied reluctantly. “Meet you there in five.” Of course, Charlotte had been Charlotte, and that included being unpredictable.

Charlotte, leaving Alex standing there, had taken off across the park without a backward glance. Alex stood dumbfounded a moment, watching her slow jog-walk toward the trail across the grassy lawns of Lincoln Park. She was heading directly toward their usual post-run Starbucks and if he didn’t get moving, she would be there first.

Still he stood, willing her to look back and flash him that smile that changed her whole face. She didn’t, of course, and Alex was left standing there, admiring her lithe figure and the smooth bunch and release of her muscles in those tiny running shorts as she moved into the distance. Reminding himself to close his gaping mouth, Alex jogged to the parking lot, trading an extra moment of admiring a beautiful woman for a few short moments admiring his beautiful new car.

Arriving at the coffee shop several minutes before Charlotte, Alex was forced to cool his heels. He spent the time piecing together anything he could think of to uncover Charlotte’s deep, dark, secret. Admittedly, he needed the ten-minute head start away from her to give his overheated blood a little cooling time too. He kept envisioning the two of them in that sweet ride, sitting close with their sweat-slicked bodies. The image had intensified the jolts of.electricity already coursing through his veins from running beside her scantily clothed body.

Too bad she turned me down. One of these days we will be in tight quarters, all alone, and I will make my move. I have resisted too long already.

Since the mention of her tight hamstring, all Alex could think about was massaging her leg, and moving up from there. Did the woman not understand what she was doing to him? After all, he was a healthy red-blooded man. How long was he supposed to watch her round little ass wiggle in front of him, or the glide of muscles in those incredible legs – or OMG – her breasts bob up and down in those little running tops. The woman was killing him. He wanted her so badly he could taste it.

He chided himself to stop thinking of her that way, as he always did when he lusted after her. He would catch himself wanting her and repress the overwhelming sexual response that had plagued him since the beginning. She was so much more than just beautiful and sexy. She was a brilliant woman, funny, witty, complex and delightful. She considered him a running partner, and a friend…

…but that body, oh, that body. Stop it!

Alex determined to stay focused on what she might be trying to cover up and got his desire under control. He reviewed the signs – when she changed topics or failed to make eye contact. He carefully dissected her words while he waited for her to arrive. He knew she was being intentionally elusive. Alex resolved again that today would be the day he found out what she was concealing, beginning as soon as she arrived.

Speaking of arriving, Charlotte should have shown up long before now. She would have, unless something had happened. How long had he been sitting, pondering? How much time had passed?

Heart racing like a freight train, Alex ran into the park. Unsure why, he was terrified of what he might find.

EXCERPT

The grey of winter had settled into Toronto, and the monad Dave admitted he wouldn’t have minded another week in New York. The climate wasn’t better, but somehow the lights did a better job of fighting off the gloom.

But Warren Moore had said go home and find evil telepaths, so here he was at the Toronto Zoo late on a Friday afternoon, shivering as he walked through the ten-acre Tundra Trek, featuring polar bear habitat. He was thinking he should have explored the Gorilla Rainforest instead when a young boy who couldn’t have been more than ten walked up to him.

“We are not evil,” the child said.

Dave blinked hard, thinking he must be mistaken.

“That’s right.” The boy answered the thoughts in Dave’s head. “It is unusual for a child my age to have this kind of ability. They let me do this to make a point to you. We are children and old people and pregnant women and men that could be your brothers. You don’t need to fight us. You need to get to know us. Yes, it was hard to find you out here. Any sensible man would have walked around the rainforest exhibit.”

Dave started to probe into the boy's mind, and he felt a sharp, defensive wall rise up to stop him. He sought out its source and sensed the woman on the other side of the bushes before he saw her. She stepped out in plain view. Good lord, she had to be at least eight months pregnant.

“Come here, Dave. Now.” The child ran toward her.

“His name is Dave, too,” she said. “My child and I are among the people of x0. You ought to get to know us better before you sign on with the one who wants to destroy us.”

With that she put her arm around the boy and the two of them walked back toward the warmth of a nearby exhibit.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Sherrie Roth grew up in Western Kansas thinking there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.

She published her first science fiction short story and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next tale. When it finally came, it declared to her it had to be a whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.

The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down. He explained that, in a fit of practicality, she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was she found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying. The bad news was the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.

Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.

Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was the book informed her it had grown into a six book collection. Sherrie decided she better start writing before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.

My review:

4.25 stars

One of Two by S.R. Cronin is the final book in the ’46. Ascending’ series. This science fiction/fantasy story brings together all of the characters introduced in the various stories and explores the complicated possibilities that result when those who exploit their powers for selfish gain encounter those who have honed their powers but just want to live in harmony.

What a wild ride. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of psychic phenomena since I once heard that humans only use a fraction of their brain power and I wonder what would happen once we learned to harness our potential. Although each of these stories can be read as a stand-alone tale, I think it would be most difficult to read this one without having read the others in the series because there is so much backstory that influences the actions of each of these folks.

This story (and series) explores current events but uses the psychic twist to make one think about the impact of each person’s action or inaction. I love the capabilities that each of the special characters displays and it was fascinating to watch them learn how to work in tandem with each other, once the walls of secrecy fell. The irony was seeing that some were “handicapped” despite their special abilities and I can’t help seeing the allegory with society in general, which seems to be obsessed with “normal” even though it would be not only a boring place to be surrounded by carbon copies, but also a stagnant one.

As always, the book is thought-provoking and I love getting reacquainted with folks from the previous stories. Ironically, I hadn’t remembered reading this WITHOUT having read the other books, so I was startled to discover I had already reviewed it as a stand-alone story but also gratified that I am at least consistent in my evaluation, lol.

Part of the charm of this series is its diverse group of characters and locations, so that one gets glimpses into different cultures and mores, and it was wonderful to armchair travel from one pole to another and across a multitude of countries.

This is a great series to stimulate “what if” ponderings, and I think everyone could benefit from the creative exploration of our differences as humans and our response to having abilities that set us apart. I think that fans of science fiction and fantasy will enjoy seeing the possibilities while those who are concerned with current events will appreciate watching that just a few determined folks can make a difference, both in the short term and in the future.

Blurb

The course of true love runs through every neighborhood….

Only one thing stands between Gregory MacPherson II and his dream revitalization project for the gritty neighborhood of Ball’s End: a rinky-dink, run-down used bookstore called Hailey’s Comic. But when master negotiator Mac shows up to make a deal with the owner, he comes face-to-face with quirky, colorful Hailey—unexpectedly good-humored about Mac’s attempted eviction and, also unexpectedly, a hot guy.

Hailey won’t give up his lease, no matter how much money Mac offers. When it comes to consummating their mutual attraction, though, he’s a lot more flexible. Soon Mac has as hard a time prying himself out of Hailey’s bed as he does prying Hailey out of the building. But Hailey doubts Mac’s plans serve Ball’s End’s best interests, and he insists Mac give him a chance to prove his case. If they’re going to build a happy ever after, one of them will have to be remade….

Excerpt

Chapter One

GREGORY MacPherson II didn’t have the time or the patience to make a personal trip to a bookstore, but here he was. Alone.

No patrons roamed the narrow aisles formed by overstuffed bookshelves. No clerk waited at the vintage cash register sitting on top of a linoleum-covered counter barely capable of holding its weight. No one rushed to greet him from behind the tawdry multicolored curtain hanging at the back of the store.

From where he stood only a few feet inside the doorway, leery of allowing anything in the dusty hodgepodge to brush against his suit, he could see straight down the center aisle all the way to the back of the store. It was a thirty- foot-by-sixty-foot shoebox, longer than it was wide, one of four retail spaces on the ground floor of the six-story brick building and the only one still open. Which was why Gregory MacPherson II, commonly referred to as Mac, had personally dragged himself down here.

How the place could stay in business without any workers, never mind customers, was a mystery he didn’t intend to solve. He was there to shut the place down, not rescue it, though in the few short minutes he’d been exposed to Hailey’s Comic, he could already list a half-dozen ways to improve its profitability.

That sign out front, for instance. It was a purple whirlwind of planets, well done if you were going for an acid-trip vibe, but the name implied there’d be comics, and the sign implied there’d be comets. Or drugs. And from what he could see, there were neither. If an establishment wanted to bring in customers, it needed to make clear the services it provided and establish confidence that it would provide them well.

Then there was the matter of actually waiting on the customers you did bring in. A bell had tinkled as he’d entered, but apparently only for its own enjoyment.

“Hello?” He raised his voice to a level that couldn’t be ignored and had a brief moment to wonder if he really was completely alone before a head and a hand appeared around the edge of the curtain.

“Mercy, you scared me,” the head said. It belonged to a young man and had a mop of brown hair piled on top of it, a few shades lighter than Mac’s own reddish brown.“Sorry, I didn’t hear the bell. Give me a minute. I’m sort of in flagrante delicto.” The head disappeared.

In flagrante delicto doesn’t mean naked, you know,” Mac told the air where the head had been. “It means you were caught doing something you shouldn’t have been. Something sexual.”

“Now, now. It’s never wrong to masturbate. There.” The head reappeared, this time attached to a body that gave Mac a startlingly clear vision of how it would look masturbating. The man was stringy, taller than Mac’s six- foot frame, but lean and underdeveloped—the body of a person who spent a lot of time reading. Or jerking off.

“What can I help you with?” He was in his mid-twenties, so perhaps ten years younger than Mac, dressed in jeans laddered with intentional rips, each the same two inches wide, running down his thighs like claw marks. His face was clean-shaven, fresh with his youth, and Mac wondered how his skin would react to having Mac’s tightly trimmed beard rubbed all over it.

“You’re free to browse around, even if I’m not out here.”

Mac added lax security to the mental list he was pointlessly compiling. “I need to speak to the owner.”

Hailey Green, owner of Hailey’s Comic, was the only thing standing in the way of his plans to revitalize this misbegotten section of Ballhaven, which plan started with this very brick building and would ultimately lead to Ball’s End—as everyone called it; he’d have to do something about the branding—becoming the newest hot spot for millennials to eat, drink, shop, and live. Urban revitalization was Mac’s business, and Hailey Green was Mac’s problem.

“Still me,” the man said, tilting his head to the side as if to take in Mac’s appearance more carefully.

Mac hadn’t changed clothes before driving down to Ball’s End, though he could’ve guessed the place would be dirty. He’d been reading a report on the effort to clear 502 Main Street of its tenants and had made an abrupt decision to come down and take care of ridding the building of its final holdout himself.

My review:

3.75 stars

Him Improvement
by Tanya Chris is a contemporary adult gay romance that features a David and Goliath struggle between Gregory Mac Pherson II (Greg/Mac), urban revitalizer, and Hailey E. Green, bookstore owner. Their personal connection sizzles despite the impasse they are at professionally but eventually one of them is going to lose the battle, which may destroy any relationship they might have had.

This story is part of the ‘Dreamspun Desires’ series and provides a unique perspective on the upheaval that goes with urban renewal. I like the way individual stories are touched upon and I enjoyed Hailey’s quirkiness but I would have liked to get a little more depth to the characters. The heat between the two main characters is intense, but I felt like the story was almost too sweet. There is some conflict, understandably, since the two main characters had opposing goals, but the major one seemed to fizzle, especially given the unequal responses to it. Despite this, I like the secondary characters and enjoyed watching Mac discover the personal impact of his business decisions and recommend this to anyone in search of a gentle romance with a bit of spice mixed in.

Happy Labor Day Weekend (and fun with succulents)

Happy Labor Day to those who are getting that extra day off for their weekend!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a composting lecture given by the folks who are responsible for trash pickup. I learned lots of interesting things, including how frustrating it must be for them to have to go through the green waste cans and remove all kinds of odd trash before they can start using the discarded plants and grass remnants to produce compost and mulch.

Amazingly, that recycled material is available for residents to take for use in their own homes. I was convinced to try composting on my own...and that's going to be a learning curve, lol, because the idea and the execution have a fair amount of distance between them. Anyway, I can stop driving my hubby nuts by throwing the banana peels into the garden, and I will get exercise carrying the food prep scraps (NOT meat/bones/fat) to the compost bin.

I stole (I mean, relocated) the green recycle can to put the grass clipping in the bin, and tried to tell the gardener to leave the bin in the back yard so I don't have to lug it back there. His solution—he left it there, but empty! Sigh. Ok, we'll try that again.

Anyway, I wanted to thin out our tree collard stalks (especially since we aren't eating many collard greens) so I took some with me to see if my fellow curious folks would want any. It was popular enough that I didn't have a stalk for one person, so I arranged to meet her later...and she gave me an array of succulents in exchange.
Collard greens

I'm thrilled because she gave me some donkey/monkey's tail. I always manage to kill those, so we will see if I can keep these alive!

I'm really fascinated by the one called "Mother of Thousands" because it looks so much like a fringed hat, lol. That's the center plant in the picture above. Each one of those little plants can fall to the ground and root. I guess it will be a good idea to keep it in a container, but I am fascinated by how differently succulents propagate. It turns out there are quite a few different varieties of those, so I will see how it goes with the two she gave me, plus the one I got during another plant talk a few months ago.

I generally break off a stem and try to root it, but it turns out I forget to let the end dry out first, so I often fail. I also tend to overwater, so I'm trying to be better about that. And even better, the DWP (the Department of Water and Power) gifted us with low-flow water nozzles AND moisture meters!

It turns out, that some of the leaves are quite capable of deciding to root on their own, as I discovered when checking the dirt around this plant! (Sorry, some are a bit out of focus). This is kind of a fuzzy plant (some kind of water retention adaptation).

Fuzzy, but roots are at the top and small plant is starting at the bottom

Of course, now I have to be patient and not try to pot the thing too soon, lol.

So, you might want to look into what kinds of seminars your local waste management company provides...who knows what treasures you'll be able to pick up!

What kinds of succulents have you been successful at growing?
