Mini-mushroom growing kit (Back to the Roots) Review

Gourmet Oyster Mushroom Mini Grow Kit

Back to the Roots

I had the opportunity to try several of the growing kits from Back to the Roots. The weather has been a little rainy, so I haven't tried out all of them yet. I will review those later in the year.

I was provided with coupons for the kits, but it turned out they were only available at certain locations. It was almost a scavenger hunt to find them, once I found the right store, and THEN they didn't want to take my coupons, but I eventually was able to exchange the coupons for the items.

These kits are neatly packaged, containing everything needed to grow, clear instructions, and best of all, I didn't need warm sunny days to start. The drawback...I'd never eaten oyster mushrooms, so I wasn't quite sure about eating the finished product, lol.

***********************

The premise behind the company:

Our story

How we got our start?
In a college class, we learned that mushrooms could grow entirely on spent coffee grounds. After watching hours of how-to videos and turning our college apartment into a science experiment, we gave up our corporate job offers and became full-time urban mushroom farmers in Oakland, CA.
What makes our product unique?
Our indoor gardening kits were created from a passion to reconnect families to food. We want to inspire everyone to ask where their food comes from and experience the magic of growing it themselves.
Why we love what we do?
We feel so fortunate to be able to work every day towards a mission we love and are so passionate about. We think there is a false divide in business - of "not for profits" or "for profit companies" - they should all just be "for purpose"!

***********************

I removed the contents from the cute little box...

X was easily cut into packaging

Plastic flaps peeled back

Score the substrate (I used a toothpick)

Turn package upside down and soak

Of course, I forgot to remove the package from the water before I went to bed...so it soaked a little longer than the instructions said...

Back in the box (March 31, 2020)

The one thing I had to do several times is remove the substrate from the box to peel the flaps back, because I couldn't position them properly at first. Of course, I didn't notice until I had tucked everything together (twice!), so I had to undo the box each time. Fortunately, it's very easy to put together.

When the baby mushrooms start appearing, it's called pinning

Baby mushrooms, April 4, 2020

I'm a REALLY impatient gardener (as in, I have been known to dig up seeds just to see if anything is happening), so it is SO much fun to see this happening so quickly.

April 5, 2020

I became concerned that the box was restricting the mushroom growth, so I used a box knife to cut a flap from the top and lifted it up.

April 6, 2020

April 8, 2020--HARVEST DAY!

I was afraid to wait any longer, so I decided to harvest. Then there was the challenge of figuring out how that worked. I finally took a sharp knife and sawed away...(instilling fear into my hubby, who worries that I will be a klutz like normal and cut myself)...

Underside of mushroom cluster so gills can be seen

Harvested

Chopped

Omelet w/mushrooms and cheese (plus bacon and hash browns
)

We like to have breakfast for dinner sometimes, so I fried some of the chopped mushrooms, then put them in an omelet. They were just a little more chewy than the button mushrooms I'm used to, but delicious.

There were enough mushrooms to make two omelets, plus plenty to add to the spaghetti sauce for the next night's dinner.

I've started composting, so I added the substrate and the nifty cardboard to the pile. Who knows if I will get additional mushrooms if the materials don't break down quickly!

This was a fun and tasty project, and I'm looking forward to more adventures with my other Back to the Roots kits! Stay tuned...

Have you started plants for your garden (indoors, if you are still having chilly days)? What are you growing?

Subgenre: LGBTQ Urban Fantasy

Blurb:

The devil you know is never the one you should trust.

Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the MorrĂgan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to election day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second.

But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the case: a stand-offish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister. Fighting Hannah and the Dominion Sect provides Patrick with a sinister reminder that some blood ties can never be cut.

Left behind in New York City, Jonothon de Vere finds himself targeted by hunters who will go through anyone to kill him—including the packs under his protection. With a bounty on his head, Jono is forced to make a choice that Patrick would never approve of. Doing so risks breaking the trust he’s built with the man he loves, but not acting will give the rival New York City god pack leverage Jono can’t afford to give up.

When Patrick and Jono reunite in Chicago, Patrick must confront the fraying of a relationship he’s come to rely on for his own sanity. But fixing their personal problems will have to wait—because Niflheim is clawing at the shores of Lake Michigan and the dead are hungry.

A Vigil in the Mourning is a 102k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Crown of Iron & Silver. Reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

Praise for A Vigil in the Mourning (Soulbound #4):

Patrick and Jono fight for their lives, tangling with Norse gods and monsters, while their relationship is strained by secrets and separation, in another exciting, deliciously angsty ride from Turner's Soulbound series. — Layla Reyne, author of the Fog City Trilogy

VIGIL IN MOURNING takes the Soulbound series a step further into stellar story crafting. A change in scenery for Patrick and a separation from his soulmate raises the stakes, and cliches are deftly avoided and expectations shattered as the central love story becomes fraught with tension. Each plot twist leaves the reader gasping and clinging to the pages, and I was not expecting that ending. Jono and Patrick lead an ensemble cast of characters that includes a snack obsessed dragon, a seer with a sarcasm problem, and gods that can't help but meddle. Patrick's snarktastic attitude leaves me laughing and terrified at the trouble he calls down.  — SJ Himes, bestselling author

**************

Excerpt:

Patrick shoved the TSA badge, a set of janitor keys, someone’s paper boarding pass, and a lanyard with LaGuardia printed on it into his jacket pocket, fingertips glowing from a look-away ward. Sparks of his magic twisted through the air in their immediate area as the ward directed everyone’s attention away from them.

“I told you to keep your hands to yourself when we went through security,” Patrick hissed.

“Maybe people shouldn’t leave stuff lying around waiting for someone to take it,” Wade muttered.

“They were wearing the damn things!”

Wade shrugged, gaze darting around as they walked through O’Hare, apparently unrepentant of his thieving ways. “I want a hot dog.”

Patrick rolled his eyes and kept walking. “I spent fifty dollars on the plane feeding you. Can we get out of O’Hare first?”

“But Chicago Style Hot Dogs is right there.”

My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

A Vigil in the Mourning by Hailey Turner is part of the ‘Soulbound’ series, and centers around Jonothon de Vere and his mate, Special Agent Patrick Collins, as they continue to deal with the conflicts stemming from establishing their own god pack, searching for the Morrigan’s staff, and the commitments they are bound by. Pressures and dangers mount, and their relationship may be stretched to the breaking point if they don’t have faith in what they have formed together.

This adult gay paranormal romance continues to enthrall, with its cast of compelling characters and the complex problems that face them. I adore their care for Wade, the young dragon who is coming to terms with his freedom, even if that means allowing him to overindulge his junk food addiction. The multiple pantheons involved make the situation even more complicated, as each faction strives for power and their share of worship. More people are learning about the closely held secrets that the pair have been dealing with, which leads to both hurt feelings and entanglements that may become an issue at some point.

One of the reasons I like this series so much is the intensity of the relationships. It’s obvious that both Patrick and Jon are determined to care for those around them AND each other, but neither is perfect and therefore mistakes will be made. I’ve always been intrigued by various mythological beings, and this mixture of Norse, Greek, and Haudenosaunee (Native American) not to mention vampire and shifter characters is such fun to explore. Of course, who can resist the Valkyries and their trusty rides, or the vision of Wade warming his feet IN the fireplace, or Thor as a bartender? And I agree, “Adulthood sucks. I want to return it.” (snicker)

This is a fun series that combines adventure, magic, mystery, world-shaking struggles, territorialism and gods vying for worshipers, plus dysfunctional blood family relationships and made family dynamics. I’m caught by the spell every time I pick up one of the books in this series, and for me this was the best one yet. I can’t wait to experience more adventures with these folks, but I am quite happy to reread this one while I wait!

Lady Adeline Wivenly is resolved to keep him at arm’s length during her first Season—until she overhears another woman’s plot to trick him into marriage. Her sense of justice is so strong she agrees to help him despite her mistrust. But can the ton’s most elusive lord convince the lady he is finally serious about marriage—as long as she will be his bride?

********************

Excerpt:

He forced a smile and made what he knew was a stylish bow. “Ladies, it is a pleasure to meet you. I hope you enjoy your time in the metropolis.” Miss Stern gave him a hard look. Had Lady Dorie already blackened his name to her friend? Lady Augusta was polite but unaffected, as if she did not care one way or the other if she met him. Miss Featherton had narrowed her eyes as if assessing his worth as a human being. That was disconcerting, but it ran in her family.

Then there was Lady Adeline. She just stared at him with considering, soft gray eyes that shone like silver. Curls of gleaming dark honey-blond hair framed her face. She was utterly entrancing. Immediately, he wanted to know what she was thinking. As if she realized she should not continue to look at him, she dropped her gaze and thick brown lashes fluttered to her cheeks, drawing his attention to her straight little nose and a light sprinkling of freckles. If only he’d met her in other company. Naturally, he could not help but notice her deep rose lips and the fact that her bottom lip was just a bit plumper than the top one. His gaze dropped lower, and he sucked in a breath. Even her demure spencer couldn’t hide the bounty beneath. He could have licked his lips at the thought of her in an evening gown. Here was a lady worth getting to know.

A Struggle for Independence by p.m. terrell (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author p.m. terrell, who shares the impact authors can make.

Writing to Make a Difference

by

p.m. terrell

An author’s work can live far beyond the writer’s natural lifetime. It is easy to confirm that statement by merely taking stock of the books you own. How many of those authors have been deceased by decades or even centuries? Yet their words live on, inspiring readers and offering countless hours of insight and enjoyment.

Many writers have used their talents to help change the world. A perfect example is Charles Dickens, who witnessed injustices among the poorest and most helpless among us and sought to change it. Through fiction, he conjured images of slums, orphans and misfortune and yet he often portrayed the characters taking victorious paths, often against the odds.

In writing to make a difference, the author needs to consider their passions and causes. Rather than become preachy or judgemental, we can impart knowledge and empathy through a variety of means, including the following.

Characters should exist outside the box. Develop characters whose actions, beliefs or circumstances allow the reader to see the world through distinctly different eyes. Consider physical, mental, or emotional handicaps they must overcome or situations they must conquer. Antagonists can provide seemingly insurmountable challenges, attempting to thwart their progress at every turn.

In geography lies our destinies. A character living in war-torn Syria will have a distinctly different journey than one living in Australia’s Outback, Calcutta, London, or Main Street America. Consider the opportunities that geography provides, as well as the challenges. There are significant differences between those living in metropolitan areas versus those in more rural towns, hamlets, farms, or villages.

History is always in the making, and it always repeats itself. We may believe we live in unique times regarding war, conflict, disease, economic challenges, natural disasters or political unrest. A closer look at history, however, tells us our ancestors have fought amazingly similar trials and tribulations. Our current times always exist within a bubble of uncertainty, for it is only through the lens of hindsight that we can trace paths to victory or defeat. By selecting similar historical circumstances, we can provide that lens to the reader, providing faith and hope that we will make it through current events.

We are all in this together. We might be tempted to believe that our situations are unique, or that we are the only beings that feel the way we do. A closer look, however, shows us that thousands, often millions of people, share our obstacles and our triumphs. At any given time, readers will be experiencing losses of loved ones through death or separation. They may lose their homes, their cultures, their routines, or the comforts they once knew. By incorporating some of life’s significant stressors into our plotlines, we can touch the hearts, minds, and souls of those facing similar situations.

Writing to make a difference is the mindset that our words have the power to provide hope, comfort, insight, serenity, or stimulation, not only in our lifetime but for centuries to come. It is looking beyond the immediate gratification of seeing our names in print or collecting royalties. It is ultimately the realization that with every story we tell, we can change someone’s life.

EXCERPT

The flames danced and pirouetted like so many ballet members assembled on a stage, their movements mesmerizing, even hypnotic. The warmth, however, was wanting, with a single peat brick trying its hardest to do its job but failing like a tiny child not meant to go it alone. I felt sorry for it falling short of the success it strove so hard to achieve, and then I grew discouraged as the cold pervaded.

I lay on a bed of straw faintly scented with what must have been last year’s lavender blooms, as it was too early in the current season for them to make their appearance. The straw packed under my weight until I felt the pricks from shoulder to knee, and as I turned from one position to another, I eventually felt the hard dirt floor upon which the bed was laid. The blankets meant to cushion and warm me were worn so thin, I could see the outline of my clothes underneath them, and despite wearing several layers, I could not get warm.

Nicky’s breathing had been measured, but now I could no longer hear him, and I struggled to see him through the gloom. He lay facing me—that I was sure of—but the shadows prevented me from seeing the details my heart desired. We’d talked until he’d fallen asleep, seemingly unaffected by the cold, and now I longed to hear his voice again. Despite his height and his brawn, his voice was gentle and reassuring, so very different from Stratford’s brusque and impatient tenor.

Shivering, I stood and gathered the blankets about me as best I could and made my way to Nicky’s side. I dropped to my knees upon his straw, which was a great deal thinner than the bed I’d been given. I was surprised to find his eyes open and watching me.

“It will be warmer for both of us if…” my voice trailed off as I felt the heat rising in my cheeks.

He opened his blanket as if inviting me in. I crawled in beside him, my back to his front. Unlike myself, who was wearing every stitch of clothing I’d brought in an attempt to stave off the chill, he was wearing only a gray shirt and trousers. My cold stockinged feet found him, and he covered us with both our blankets and then wrapped his arm around me. I placed my hand upon his and snuggled more deeply against him.

“Are you warmer?” His breath tickled my hair as he whispered, his lips close to my ear.

“Yes,” I said. “Much warmer.” I knew he could feel the beating of my heart; it was thumping wildly in both my chest and my neck, and I felt as though I could not catch my breath.

He settled in behind me, and I tried to listen to the rhythmic breathing I’d heard when he first slipped into slumber, but it did not come. His arm grew heavy across me like a weighty coat determined to protect me from the chill. Then he shifted, his head moving down to my neck where his lips brushed against my skin.

I turned in his arms, and he came upon one elbow to peer into my face. The darkness enveloped us, and I found myself searching out his eyes with a longing to see into his soul. I placed a hand upon his face, running my fingers along his jawline, feeling the stubble that had formed there since his last shave. And then my fingers found his hair and intertwined around the thick locks.

“You don’t have to do this,” he said hoarsely. “I gave you my word.”

“I know. But I did not give you mine.” I pressed upward to find his lips, my own whispering across his, savoring the fullness and the sweetness before his lips parted, and he returned my kiss with a passionate one of his own. I became lost in his kisses, my body burning for his, the longing mounting within me. “You don’t have to do this,” I whispered when we pulled back for a brief moment. “Or do you want to?”

“Desperately,” he answered as his hands followed the lines of my body as if memorizing the bend in my back, the flare of my hips.

“I love your curves,” he whispered.

“I am a bit hefty,” I answered, suddenly self-conscious.

“Oh, I beg to differ,” he said, his voice becoming serious. “I love every curve. Your body might not be perfect, but it is certainly perfect for me.”

I felt as though a thousand pounds had been lifted from my shoulders, and suddenly I felt like the most beautiful woman in the entire world. As if to drive home his point, he set about exploring each curve, and in the process, he set my body on fire. Mountains of clothing and blankets peeled away, and somehow, the peat grew warmer until the room was awash in our moans and our heat, our limbs intertwined, our skin glistening, and I knew with all the assuredness in my soul that I was precisely where I was meant to be.

Excerpt:

GRANT
Grocery bags thumping against my calves, I’d trudged half a mile down Southwest Bank Road before I got a ride from the young guy, who took me all the way to Mitch’s driveway.
“Best of luck,” he said before he drove off.

Finally. Silence.

Well, not exactly silence. Birds twittered. A breeze sang through the hemlock and pine trees. My feet crunched on the gravel.

It was a long driveway.

My shoulders hurt from all the hauling. I prayed the cabin had a bathtub. A soak and a meal would go a long way toward rebooting my brain. I’d spend what remained of the afternoon in contemplation of my situation. If my crap cell phone could pick up a signal, and if I had enough credit left on my pay-as-you-go phone plan, I’d start a job search. I didn’t expect it to take long to find a new job. All I required was The Zone and enough money to keep my ass out of a homeless shelter. On the other hand, I was a thirty-eight-year-old underachiever who’d been suspended from a menial job and then quit, so maybe the ship of employability had sailed without me.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

The Infinite Onion by Alice Archer centers around Grant Eastbrook as his life implodes and he flees all he has known while he regroups. His decision to camp out on an island leads him to encounter a quirky man, Oliver Rossi, who not only has complex layers but who forces Grant to delve into himself, no matter how painful it may be. Surprisingly, each man has something to teach the other, provided he can truly listen.

This adult contemporary gay romance story has multiple layers, as is to be expected from the title. I found it VERY slow moving and I didn’t feel that Grant was necessarily a very likeable person, despite his allure to and care for children. I did enjoy the way he was able to connect with the kids, and the care he demonstrated for his nephew, but I was a bit disturbed by him. Oliver is a great onion, but a frustrating character for me. The more layers that are peeled back, the more revealed. There are some aspects to the story that continue to puzzle me, and I’m not quite sure that either of these guys are quite stable enough, despite the growth of their character arcs through the story.

One of the things I enjoy about this author’s writing is the vivid and lyrical imagery employed (e.g. “…the sky rang with blue”), and the carving and drawings that are central to the story are evoked deftly even as one puzzles over the person who is creating the works of art. Although this is a thought-provoking story, it is also a discomfiting tale, and I would consider it a happy for now ending as I think both the men and their relationships will continue to be a work in progress.

Dog Town by Debbie L. Richardson (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by
Debbie L. Richardson

Harry loves to race around the streets of Dog Town. When he stumbles upon the lost city of cats, he finds himself in a race against Dog Town’s fastest canine, Grizzly.

The winner of this race will have the power to save Cat World, or destroy it.

Harry wants to win, but there is one small problem. The race is in the ocean, and Harry is terribly afraid of water.

Can Harry overcome his fear of the water and save Cat Town?

Excerpt

HARRY was dreaming that a cat fell out of the sky and landed on his head.

He woke at once. It was dark inside his kennel. He was uncertain if it was very late or very early, but he was wide awake and puzzled about the cat in his dream.

Cats were unheard of in Dog Town. The way summers without mosquitoes were unheard of. Or non-fattening chocolate bars were unheard of.

Baffled, Harry tried thinking about something else. Instead, he became consumed by visions of cats. As he struggled to find meaning behind his odd dream, he became convinced it meant something horrible for dog-kind.

The blanket at his feet offered a good place to avoid thinking on his dream any further. He hid under the blanket, until the heat of the summer’s night made it hot enough to cook a roast.

Harry pushed his nose outside his kennel. It was hot and humid tonight, and there wasn’t a breath of wind. Vastly different to that afternoon when the wind’s temper had set every door in the house banging.

Even though it was too hot inside his kennel, he didn’t want to leave it. Outside in his backyard, shadows skipped across the treetops. Shadows that didn’t belong to the moon or to the wind.

Merlin Raj and the Santa Algorithm by D.G. Priya (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by
D.G. Priya

My name is Merlin Raj. Usually, I only have to worry about being the best service dog. I help my boy, Matthew, walk at school. But when my human Mom has to go away for winter break, getting ready for the holiday becomes a mess. I might be a super-smart golden retriever who wears glasses, but could I help my best friend with more than a disability?

Gulp.

Will a class on algorithms get me barking up the right Christmas tree?

Merlin Raj, The Santa Algorithm is the first installment in the Merlin Raj, Computer Science Service Dog chapter-book series. With a Computer Science degree and a passion for preparing kids for the future, author D. G. Priya blends technology with animal stories to stimulate a desire to read. Each book in the series introduces a new programming skill, complete with study guides for educators. If you or your child like delightful dog tales, practical examples, and accessible learning tools, then you’ll love D. G. Priya’s tail-wagging adventure.

Excerpt

First snow brushed the ground with white. I loved winter. My fur kept me nice and warm on most days. For freezing cold days, my human mother, Mom Raj, had bought me a bright, thermal rain slicker. It was sky blue with a service-animal label.

Blue best matched my golden fur, which I liked to keep well brushed at all times.

Even my glasses were on a stylish athletic band, and they matched Matthew’s glasses. My nose twitched from the cold.
