The dangers of too much sun!

If you have followed my blog for a while, you may remember that I went to see the poppies blooming a few weeks ago. The following week I worked in the garden, and then...I started having these weird little bumps on my arm...that ITCHED! It progressed to little fluid-filled itchy bumps that began spreading along one arm, up over my face, and a bit on my other arm. I started wondering about chicken pox or something else infectious, as I didn't suffer from most of the childhood diseases but I looked up symptoms and breathed a sigh of relief when I didn't have any of the major signs.

The doctors postulated that it was a perfect storm of things, including an allergic reaction to my having used my hubby's soap by accident. The doctor mentioned the fact that my most severe reaction was on my left side, and said that skin cancer can also present on the left side, because that is often the side exposed to the sun when driving. Unfortunately...no matter what they prescribed or suggested...I ITCHED! Of course, the allergist indicated that calamine lotion (which the urgent care doctor mentioned as something to try) was not recommended any longer because it is also itchy once it dries, the steroid ointments that were prescribed gave relief that lasted only minutes at a time and I was concerned about the potential side effects. So...I can't recommend strongly enough...if you have itchy skin, consider using Eucerin Skin Calming Natural Oatmeal-Enriched Creme. It was wonderfully effective and helped make me less miserable. I wasn't so worried about potential side effects, and it helped my skin heal much quicker and allowed me to sleep at night.

I was feeling better by the time the LA Times Festival of Books came around, but I evidently didn't put enough sunscreen on, and I had a mild recurrence of my bumps, but nothing like the first time. It DID remind me...EARS have to be protected as well, and even more complicated...eyelids are susceptible also.

So, now I know I have to be extremely diligent about sunscreen. I have been using Aveeno ultra-calming daily moisturizer on my face, and although I know the SPF isn't high enough, it seems to have been doing the trick enough to keep things to a dull roar.

For my arms (and I guess my dead-fish looking legs once I start wearing shorts regularly, lol), I am using Coppertone Oil Free Sunscreen Lotion. Knock on wood, there won't be additional episodes, and I will have to remember to renew the application if I am going to be in the sun for an extended time (or in the pool). One caveat, I dropped the bottle right after I got it home and it hit the linoleum and the cap shattered! One of those comedy of errors....the lotion splattered on the walls and started oozing out of the container and I was running around trying to find something to mop it up and frantically trying to keep the lotion from continuing to ooze out. I did write the company and suggest that they consider making the cap less brittle, especially since I can't imagine kids with slippery hands not dropping the container at some point. They graciously sent me a coupon for a new bottle, but I remind you to be careful when handling it!

So, take a note from my misfortune...and make sure you are adequately protected from the sun's harmful effects while enjoying the warmer weather!

And...Happy Anniversary to my beloved hubby!

EXCERPT

A young woman stood in the doorway with a Spires cloak over her arm. Ash could tell by her clothes the woman did not come from a farming community. Her dress frills on the light material floating in the air movement from the corridor, would have been considered unnecessary by Tulia.

"Oh." The newcomer paused for effect. "I thought I would have a room to myself."

"It's cozier when there are more of us," Rupe told her. "I'm Rupe, this is Ash."

"Charmed, I'm sure. My name is Ceku Atania Beland. You may call me Ceku. I wonder where the servant is with my bags." The young lady entered the room and looked around. "I think I'll take this bed."

Ceku seated herself daintily on the bed nearest the door and placed her cloak beside her. Ash hoped their new roommate wasn't as stuck up as she appeared. Maybe offering some help to the other girl would make her more friendly.

"Hilso said we were to leave the bed by the door for the second year student."

"Nonsense. This is the best bed. I shall sleep here."

"Move."

All three of them jumped at the brusque command. A tall dark haired girl stood in the doorway glaring at Ceku.

"I shall do no such thing. Do you know who I am?"

"Yes, I do. You're a first year student and any other rank you hold outside Spires doesn't count here. Now move yourself and get your bags. They're still sitting in the courtyard."

"The servants will no doubt bring them when they have time." Ceku still didn't move from the bed.

"I'm Uma, your second year roomie." The girl introduced herself to Ash and Rupe then turned to face Ceku and muttered something under her breath.

Ash barely managed to suppress her laughter when the stuck up young woman slid off the bed and landed on the floor. The surprise still showed on her face as she slid across to the vacant bed on the other side of the room and her cloak followed obediently behind her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Chapter 1
Not Sure How to Approach Social Media? CARE about Your Readers
Among all the rules you’ll find online – the 80/20 rule (only 20% of your posts should be about your books or blog posts while 80% of your posts should contain content from other sources), the admonitions against using social media as a bullhorn, the warnings about over automating – there’s also an unspoken tenet.
This tenet isn’t a rule that comes up on the blogosphere. Instead, it’s more of a system of approach and an acronym that I created while preparing for the San Francisco Writers Conference.
If you follow the approach I’m about to explain, you can be sure that the time you spend on social media will generate the type of engagement with readers that you want to have.
Once you start to use social media, be prepared to CARE about people. I know that it seems evident to care about people online but give me a moment to break down the acronym.
           C - Communicate with your readers.
           A - Answer your readers’ questions.
           R - Relate to your readers.
           E - Educate with stellar content.
And most of all simply care about people.
Joanna Penn devised the term social karma. As she explains it, if you want book sales, buy books. If you want book reviews, write reviews for all of the books you read. If you want people to like your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter, like your readers’ and friends’ Facebook pages and follow them on Twitter.
Reciprocate actions. And just as you might offer money to a homeless stranger, smile at a person walking down the street, or invite a new family from your church over for tea or dinner, take the types of actions online that will help you to get to know the people who follow you and want to connect with you.
In other words, be kind online. Be inquisitive. Be responsive. Be open to meeting people and revealing parts of your life.
Let’s look more closely at CARE.
My review:
-->
5 out of 5 stars
Social Media Just for Writers: How to Build Your OnlinePlatform and Find and Engage with Your Readers by Frances Caballo is an excellent resource for information about the major social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Goodreads, and blogging. The author uses clear and simple instructions to walk one through establishing a presence on each of these venues, describes drawbacks and advantages to a particular medium, and explains how to analyze the impact. There are excellent screenshots that provide guidance on what the screen should look like and specific directions on where to find specific tools.
I originally requested to review this book because I work with writers who are at all stages of social media familiarity and wanted to find out if this would be a helpful title. I was impressed by the detail and breadth of information available, and surprised to discover that the lessons are applicable to any newbie to each type of interaction even though they are tailored more for authors. I was intrigued to discover that there is a different emphasis for fiction versus non-fiction authors and reminded that there is a reason I have not engaged in most of the popular media. I admit that I hadn’t previously included Goodreads in my list of social media platforms but I have given the same type of recommendations to authors about how to become engaged on that particular platform.
As a semi-Luddite, I am definitely not adapted to those applications that require the use of a smartphone but I can see how the age group of users will definitely be useful in tailoring one’s marketing efforts to the appropriate market. I think this is a great informational tool, and I presume it will be updated as needed because it has quotes on the various prices being charged for the ancillary applications that refine the use of each platform.
I think this book has value for anyone interested in establishing a social media presence and will save one hours of frustration because it gives tips on how to reach a desired market as well as how to block the undesirable element. I was most impressed that the author reaffirms a mantra that I have attempted to convey to those I work with, i.e. be yourself, do for others what you want them to do for you, and don’t just try to push your book, care about people!
 “Hello.”
“Did I wake you up, cowboy?”
She heard him growl. “Yes. You will pay for it too. Let yourself in.”
She sucked in her breath. She was wet, and more than ready. Grabbing her keys, she headed downstairs. Mrs. Reyes was in the kitchen. “Mamita. I am going out for a while. I will be back early before dinner.”
Harley may have broken a few speed limits on the way over to her cowboy’s house. She used the garage door opener to let herself in, pulling her SUV in beside his truck.
Once inside she walked to his bedroom. He was naked, lying on top of the covers waiting for her. His long black hair spilled over his chest nearly to his tapered waist. She took in his physique His long well-muscled body. His piercing deep brown eyes that looked black in the darkness of his room. His high cheekbones, chiseled chin and sensuous lips.
“Strip.”
About the Author:
Candi Fox, co-host of the wildly popular radio show Candi and Company with over 900 thousand listeners began her venture in the paranormal at the tender age of two, when she witnessed her first apparition. From that moment on the paranormal seemed to follow her. Little did she know that she was indeed a magnet of sorts. It wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she found people who could not only explain her gifts, but would also help her hone them. Armed with this new knowledge she began to openly explore hauntings and other paranormal phenomena. Growing up in Indiana lent her the opportunity to explore many famous haunted places including the Hannah House, which was once part of the Underground Railroad. A little over two years ago she moved to Tulsa, OK and has began to explore the haunted landscape in a new state. Candi lives with her husband, and furry children in Tulsa. Happy Homicides 5: The Purr-fect Crime by Joanna Campbell Slan et al. (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
It is my pleasure to share a guest post from author Neil Plakcy...
NPI have loved mysteries since I began reading them as a teenager, and I think that while many readers feel that the unraveling of the puzzle is the greatest pleasure, for me the biggest attraction is the chance to understand other people. What pushes someone to commit a crime? Why does the detective pursue justice, often at great cost to him or herself? That kind of insight is key to our knowledge of ourselves as human beings, and crime fiction provides the vehicle for that discovery.
The most difficult obstacle I’ve faced in my writing career has been my desire to reach out to readers that the big New York publishers ignored. When I wrote the first of my golden retriever mysteries, I created a character that I believed in – a good man recovering from the effects of a single bad decision. I wanted to show how adopting a dog, and the unconditional love that golden retriever provided, could help him learn to live, and love, again. The vehicle for that discovery was a cozy, or traditional, mystery, in which he and the dog teamed up to investigate the murder of the dog’s previous owner.
However, my agent at the time told me that publishers were only interested in cozy mysteries with female protagonists, because the bulk of cozy readers were female. He suggested that I either replace my hero with a heroine, or make my straight hero gay—to reach the niche of gay mysteries, where I’d already established myself.
The more I investigated, the more I discovered my agent was right. The leading publisher of cozy mysteries, for example, had at the time thirty-four series—all but two with female protagonists. And the other two were male-female duos.
Amazon helped me overcome that hurdle. I was lucky enough to get in on the first wave of the e-book revolution, when lots of avid readers had Kindles and other devices, and there weren’t enough books available. I knew there was a market of readers who loved both dogs and mysteries, and didn’t care if the protagonist was male or female. I was lucky enough to reach those readers through Amazon.
I am a college teacher by profession, so mentoring others comes easily to me. I teach college creative writing classes and lecture at writer’s conferences about craft. I also teach continuing education programs and talk with library groups about the business of publishing – since I have both an MBA and an MFA, the intersection of creativity and economic reality is one that fascinates me.
Without a doubt, the love of my dogs has been the single thing that has enriched my writing the most. I had a poodle as a kid, and as an adult I longed to have a dog again. When I met my partner, he had two dogs—a Yorkie and a Collie—and in falling in love with him, I joined his pack, loving the dogs as well. Soon after we moved in together, the Collie passed away, and we replaced him with a golden retriever. From the start, the Yorkie made it clear that my partner was HIS daddy, leaving the golden to me. Because my partner was working an evening shift, I did all the dog walking and training, and Sam and I bonded. After a couple of years I realized that I had to write a book about my experience with him, based on the close observation I’d developed. Sam passed on five years ago, to be replaced by Brody, and then Griffin joined our pack. The long walks we share, the ball play and rope tugging, all feature in my golden retriever mysteries. And even though my real dogs may not take to cats too well, my fictional golden, Rochester, likes them enough to follow one into an unoccupied house—leading to my story, “Riding the Tiger,” in Happy Homicides 5: The Purr-fect Crime.
THE NAMING OF CATS: A Rosalie Hart Mystery
Wendy Sand Eckel
Editor’s Note: The quaint little town of Cardigan on Maryland’s Eastern Shore seemed like the perfect spot for Rosalie Hart to open the Day Lily Café. A flat stretch of land between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the Eastern Shore is home to crusty watermen, dug-in farmers, and people who are fiercely proud to call it home. Rosalie has enough on her plate running the restaurant. But when her Maine Coon uncovers a mystery, the cat has been let out of the bag.
Chapter 1
“Your cat is up to something,” Tyler said as he walked into my kitchen. I set a steaming cup of coffee next to him and watched as he scrubbed his hands under the faucet.
“I think Sweeney Todd is happy to be outside.” I lifted my coffee mug and blew over the surface to cool it. “This is the first day it hasn’t rained in over a week.”
He dried his hands and turned to face me. “Thanks for the joe.”
Tyler Wells leased the farmland of my new home, Barclay Meadow. It wasn’t really my choice to move here. Three years ago, when my dear Aunt Charlotte bequeathed me this two-hundred-year-old house and the vast land surrounding it, I was happily immersed in my married life in Chevy Chase. But all that changed when my husband of over twenty years pronounced his love for a much younger and blonder version of me.
The sun streamed through the windows, warming the honey wood floors. Tyler and I had fallen into the habit of sharing a cup of coffee every morning before we started our days. I checked the clock. I would be leaving soon to go to the restaurant I recently opened, the Day Lily Café, currently serving breakfast and lunch five days a week in the sleepy little town of Cardigan.
Tyler brushed his sandy blond hair off his forehead. “Sweeney is digging pretty close to the vegetable gardens. You might want to stop him.”
“I’m on it.” I set my coffee down and headed outside.
My shoes squeaked on the grass as I rounded the house. A dense mist rose from the Cardigan River at the end of the sloping lawn. It was a beautiful spring morning on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
I spotted Sweeney by an old Sycamore tree. Its trunk was gnarled and twisted looking like something out of Sleepy Hollow. He was digging furiously at the ground with his front paws.
My adopted Maine Coon cat was originally named Sweetie Pie. But on the first day I brought him home, he slaughtered four goldfinches in under an hour. That’s when Tyler suggested the name change. At the precise moment I started to disagree, Sweeney dropped a fifth lifeless bird on my peep-toe pump.
I knelt down next to him. He had dug so deep almost all nineteen pounds of him were immersed in the hole.
“Hey, what are you . . .” He swiped one paw with a particularly vigorous motion and a clump of dirt launched onto my black skirt. “Sweeney, for goodness sake.” He stopped digging and let out a long, guttural mmrrrow. He pushed back out of the hole and eyed me intently. My stomach tightened with dread. “What have you found, baby?”
