Edges by Kenzie Macallan (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

I have the pleasure of sharing great information from author Kenzie Macallan.

The Path to Publishing: A Starter’s Guide

by
Kenzie Macallan

Whether you want to self-publish or traditionally publish your manuscript, there are a couple things to keep in mind. I’m publishing my second book so I’m writing to you from the early stages. I’m still navigating the waters. Here are some tips that I hope are helpful.

·      I went to an RWA (Romance Writers of America) conference a couple of years back. What kept coming up over and over again was the need to get on all the social media outlets right away, before your book comes out. The top sites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. Your readers want to know who you are as a person. Don’t make all your posts about your book. Let them into your world both personally and as a writer. Even traditional publishers want to know about your social media base.
·      Create a website and keep it simple. My website is my name. I chose www.wix.com and there is also www.blogspot.com. Connect with both beginning and experienced authors. I know some writers that wished they would have started two years before their first book came out. These are also your connections to editors, cover design artist, proofreaders, and promotion companies. It’s a community that is willingly to give advice.
·      After you write your first draft, put it away for at least six weeks. This is some great advice from Stephen King’s book On Writing. I highly recommend this book. Then come back to it and begin the editing process. I found the website www.AutoCrit.com to be very helpful. Put your manuscript through at least two more rounds of editing.
·      Get into a critique group. There is www.scribophile.com as well as others. Have other writers look at your work and you can learn how to critique their work too. Learning how to critique is important because it will help you critique your own work.
·      Find yourself a great editor. This isn’t easy to do considering there are many editors out there who want your business. The hard part is finding an editor who understands what you’re trying to do with your storyline. Don’t take it personally. Just listen.
·      If you’re looking to go the path of traditional publishing, then you need to put together a query letter and start sending them out. There are many websites and resources that can help you put this together in a professional manner.
·      If you’re self-publishing, hire a professional cover design person. Start by looking at covers that catch your eye both in your genre and in other genres. Do some research to find out who did the work.
·      Once you think your book is polished, find a formatter. Formatting wasn’t something I attempted to do. If you feel technically confident in this area then go for it. But professional formatters know the little tricks, the latest trend for books, and add a professionalism you may miss. I have found it’s not that expensive and well worth it. I use http://thekilliongroupinc.com .
·      Put together and ARC (Advanced Reader/Reviewer Copy) in both ePUB and mobi (kindle). Start building a reader group that will read, give feedback and write a review when the book gets published.
·      Find a promotion company that has been around a while, has a strong audience base on all platforms and are professional.
·      You should get ISBN numbers for both your ebooks and paperbacks. I took the plunge and bought a package of 10 directly from www.Bowker.com .
·      Get your manuscript registered with the copyright office in the US. It protects you should anyone want to make another book out of your book.
·      The promoting and selling of your book never ends. It’s constant. It changes over time. My suggestions include Facebook ads, Amazon ads, Goodread giveaways, Facebook Takeovers on other pages, Twitter ads promos, and making connections with your readers through newsletters and website.
·      Last, but not least, it costs money. The first year cost is probably the most you’ll spend. If you plan to write for a long time then I recommend you invest in that first year. The second year will be less expensive as you navigate what worked for you and what doesn’t.
·      Stay calm and write on!

Dean needed a distraction from the scene that just unfolded before him. Cooking would give him an escape. His hands trembled. He had been here before, only last time he completely fucked it up. The fierce connection to the beautiful, strong creature in the next room would be his undoing. His past caught up with him. Did he honestly think he could bury himself in work and one-night stands to keep him from facing his past mistakes? Every time he thought about not being able to save her, the winch tightened in his chest, cutting off his air.

Hunched over the cooking eggs, his memories flooded him. No other options presented themselves other than to keep Leigha safe. The emotions pulled at him from several directions, demanding his attention. Over the years he had tried to hammer them down, hoping they would leave of their own accord. He had even tried to drink them away without success.

“Hey, you okay?” She blew into the room like a warm Australian ocean breeze. They already had connections that only true lovers have with each other. That link that allowed you to feel and sense things about the other person.

He turned around and pasted on his model smile. “Yeah, just remembering something.”

She walked over next to him as her eyes read his lie. “The model smile doesn’t work on me and the eggs are going to burn.”

Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes by Tony Hampton (Spotlight and review) PUYB

FIX YOUR DIET, FIX YOUR DIABETES
by
 Tony Hampton, MD

Publisher: Windy City Publishers
Pages: 168
Genre: Self-Help

BOOK BLURB:

Want to fix your diabetes?  In this book, I share with my diabetic and borderline diabetic readers that they have the power to reverse or prevent diabetes simply by changing their diets.  It starts with how you think.  By removing old beliefs to new ones that better serve you, the path to recovery from diabetes can be that simple.  Once I provide the rationale for changing old beliefs to more productive ones, I then share with you ways to stay motivated as you journey to a new way of eating.  You are then given a deeper understanding of why so many people have diabetes.  This knowledge will allow you to remove thoughts you may have had where you blamed yourself for having diabetes.  You are then given tips on how to maintain the motivation needed to make a successful transition to a diabetic friendly diet.  Additional knowledge is given about the many complications which could occur when this condition is not well controlled.  Empowered with the understanding of why diabetes occurs and its many complications, you will be given a case for changing how diabetes is treated.  This is done by changing the focus of diabetes management away from the symptoms (elevated glucose), which is how we currently manage this condition, to treating the cause of the disease (insulin resistance).  You are then given the rationale for increasing healthy fats in your diets while reducing starchy carbohydrates and processed foods.  Once this is explained, examples of foods that should be considered for smoothies, snacks, and dinner are given so you will know how to choose foods which are best.   Finally, tips on how to avoid being fooled by marketing labels and claims of so-called healthy foods provide the framework by which great dietary choices can be made.  This new approach to reversing diabetes with diet will reverse diabetes in nearly anyone willing to make these simply lifestyle changes.

My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes: Your Dietary Solution to Reversing Diabetes by Tony Hampton is a practical guide that attempts to address both attitude and action to treat a prevalent killer. I like that it starts by reminding us how important our beliefs and attitude are for success and the danger of FEAR (false evidence appearing real) and emphasizes that change is needed to achieve success. Dr. Hampton gives assignments and challenges longstanding beliefs even as he reminds us to check with our own physicians to help evaluate what should be tried. He makes some surprising statements such as the positive benefits of fats in the diet and the beneficial effects that a 24-hour fast can have. His acknowledgment of factors such as ethnicity and culture impacting on food choices reinforces that it is the attitude and effort that are important…not a specific addition or subtraction of a food from one’s menu.

I like the pragmatic approach that acknowledges the difficulty of changing to have a healthy way of eating and the practical suggestions, including recipes and food choices that will help one’s ability to avoid or manage diabetes. I admit, some of the items are not part of my normal menu…e.g. hemp or chia seeds or coconut, but I can definitely work on adding these in gradually, I am working on using cauliflower and fatty fish in the menu more often, and I am relieved by the author’s support of whole eggs in one’s diet. Water and dark chocolate will require that I continue trying to retrain my palate but, I agree that who I hang out with will definitely affect my results.

The book starts with encouragement to have the proper attitude, exemplified by a quote from Mahatma Gandhi about the relationship between your beliefs and your values and how that becomes your destiny, and it points out that it takes somewhere around two months to acquire a new habit. It gets a little technical and detailed about the way diabetes develops, but then goes into foods and supplements that have a low glycemic index and the importance of replacing an unhealthy choice with a healthy one. Dr. Hampton advocates healthy foods rather than a specific diet, and I am very happy to have had the opportunity to increase my knowledge base by reading this informative and practical book that would be of benefit to most of us, particularly those at risk of developing or currently dealing with diabetes.

Sophie Washington: The Snitch by Tonya Duncan Ellis (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author Tonya Duncan Ellis, who answers my question...

ELF:  What scares you the most or makes you the happiest about writing?

TDEThe thought of writing being scary is interesting. I imagine myself running off screaming in fright as a giant pen, notepad or computer come to life and chase me down the road. I quiver behind a giant bush while troops of dictionaries and thesaurus books hunt me down. Expressing myself through words comes natural to me, just like an athlete takes to playing basketball or football, or a musician effortlessly hits the right key. It’s what I do to convey my feelings and share my voice. Writing can be laborious when I struggle to choose a topic or strain to obtain just the right word. But it can also be glorious after the right theme is selected and the letters sing off the page. There’s nothing better than saying what I want to say in a way I want to say it. The goosebumps come when it’s publication time. People who know nothing about me might actually read my work. What if they don’t like it? Amazon and Goodreads review pages sometimes seem like my adversaries. I tensely click on my book page links and spot some new review. Boo! A comment I haven’t seen before is on the page. I take a deep breath and read it. Not too bad. Some things were liked, others not. Maybe I can use these suggestions in my upcoming book. Like a horror flick fan waiting for the next victim, I put fingers to keyboard and begin to write another page, ready to face my demons again.

GENRE: Children's (Middle Grade)

BLURB:

There’s nothing worse than being a tattletale…

That’s what 10-year-old Sophie Washington thinks until she runs into Lanie Mitchell, a new girl at school. Lanie pushes Sophie and her friends around at their lockers, and even takes their lunch money. If they tell, they are scared the other kids in their class will call them snitches, and won’t be their friends. And when you’re in the fifth grade, nothing seems worse than that.

Excitement at home keeps Sophie’s mind off the trouble with Lanie. She takes a fishing trip to the Gulf of Mexico with her parents and little brother, Cole, and discovers a mysterious creature in the attic above her room. For a while, Sophie is able to keep her parents from knowing what is going on at school. But Lanie’s bullying goes too far, and a classmate gets seriously hurt. Sophie needs to make a decision. Should she stand up to the bully, or become a snitch?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
I’ve got a secret. Want to hear it?
Secrets are usually nice. Like when my dad surprised me with a new goldfish last year. Or the time Grandma Washington unexpectedly visited us in Houston from her house in Corpus Christi.
I used to love secrets. But this one’s not so great.
No one knows it, except my best friend Chloe. It’s her secret, too. We don’t talk about it, ‘cause if we do people won’t like us. And in the fifth grade being liked is as important as having a fun birthday party, or staying up as late as possible, or…Christmas.
For now, I’m not telling. Chloe’s not either.
“Hey Sophie, wait up!” Chloe yells as I make my way down the hall to our first period math class. “How was your weekend?”
“The same old, same old,” I reply, hoisting my math book and binder up in my arms. “Cole whined about having nothing to do, so Mom and Dad took us to the zoo and then out for ice cream. On Sunday I caught up on all my homework after church.”
Cole is my seven-year-old brother. My mom thinks he’s an angel, but I think he was sent here to drive me crazy. Just this morning at breakfast, for example, he pulled my ponytail while she wasn’t looking, and then started crying loudly after I whacked him with an empty Cheerios box. Of course, I’m the one who got in trouble. My dad is nicer to Cole than he deserves, but I think he’s figured out his game a little bit better than Mom.
“Nothing much exciting happened at our house, either,” says Chloe, “but I did get this cute new purse.” Chloe is what you’d call a Fashionista. I admire the pretty, powder blue bag and notice the red, glittery, slide-on shoes she wears on her feet. She always manages to make our boring, private school uniforms look stylish.
“That’s nice,” I say.
As we near the classroom I see someone in the shadows and my heart starts to beat fast.
“Just great,” I mutter.
The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish (review)
The Remaking of Corbin Wale
by Roan Parrish
Blurb:
A 2017 Riptide Holiday Charity Novel
Last month, Alex Barrow’s whole life imploded—partner, home, job, all gone in forty-eight hours. But sometimes when everything falls apart, better things appear almost like magic. Now, he’s back in his Michigan hometown, finally opening the bakery he’s always dreamed of. But the pleasure of opening day is nothing compared to the lonely and beautiful man who bewitches Alex before he even orders.
Corbin Wale is a weirdo. At least, that’s what he’s heard his whole life. He knows he’s often in a fantasy world, but the things he feels are very real. And so is the reason why he can never, ever be with Alex Barrow. Even if Alex is everything he’s always fantasized about. Even if maybe, just maybe, Corbin is Alex’s fantasy too.
When Corbin begins working at the bakery, he and Alex can’t deny their connection any longer. As the holiday season works its magic, Alex yearns for the man who seems out of reach. But to be with Alex, Corbin will have to challenge every truth he’s ever known. If his holiday risk pays off, two men from different worlds will get the love they’ve always longed for.
******************************************
My review:
4.5 out of 5 stars
The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish follows baker Alex Barrow after his life is turned upside down and he finds a way to start anew. His patient interactions with the almost fey Corbin Wale provide a turning point for both of them, but there may be insurmountable obstacles to them having a deeper relationship. The book is divided according to the four elements (earth, water, fire, and water) and the point of view shifts as the element shifts, from one main character to the other. A portion of the profits from this story will support the Russian LGBT network.
This m/m contemporary romance is a gentle romance with a touch of otherworldliness. The connection that forms between two injured souls…one of whom has seen things clearly yet been called a weirdo for most of his life…is lovely to watch develop. I like the care and consideration that Alex shows for the wary Corbin and the way he strives to understand the other man even as he shows his affection through his baked creations. Corbin’s struggle with the truth that has been passed down through his family makes him understandably wary of entering into a relationship, and his coping mechanisms that set him apart from most people make him a very unique individual.
I enjoyed the slow burn that escalates into a sensual relationship and the evolution of each character’s growth. Alex’s best friend was a little abrasive at first but did redeem himself, and I really want to know how his situation turns out, so I hope he stars in the next book! I learned about the celebration of Chanukah (and want to taste some of the traditional dishes, lol), and I am intrigued by Corbin’s idea for a way to deal with negativity. The author paints wonderful word portraits and creates vivid characters, and this is another great example.
Deep End by Kathleen Duhamel (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
It is my pleasure to share a guest post from author Kathleen Duhamel, who shares her thoughts on...
CREATING MEMORABLE HEROINES
By Kathleen Duhamel
A few years ago, when I began writing what became my first novel, Deep Blue, I had no idea it would ever be published, much less met with positive reviews. I also worried that my characters were too old to be relatable. Until recently, conventional romance and women’s fiction seldom featured characters past their thirties. When Deep Blue begins, Claire Martin is a 58-year-old “barely not starving” artist and her love interest is 62-year-old musician, Robert Silver. Would readers be turned off by the idea of these two enjoying a healthy love/sex life?
 Deep Blue is also not a conventional “romance” in the sense that not every problem in the relationship gets resolved before the last page. Life tends to get a lot more complicated when you’re attempting to balance the demands of children, grandchildren, health issues, career pressures, and aging parents, and I wanted to touch on these issues in the book. Surprisingly, the age issue I worried about turned out to be a bonus for some readers, who found the senior love story “refreshing.”
What began as one book has morphed into three, with Deep End, the third book in the trilogy, published in December 2017. As in the first and second books, what drives the plot is Claire’s emotional journey. While love is certainly part of that journey, she also is forced to deal with several unresolved issues in her life as a new wife and unexpected stepmother.
Here are my tips on how to create a strong female character that readers will remember.
Give her a spine.
She insists on solving her own problems without having to be “rescued” by her man.
However, she’s also a bit of a risk taker, and after being advised by her BFF to “go for it,” she begins an improbable, long-distance relationship with Rob. The same risk-taking behavior emerges in Book 2, Deeper, when she’s forced to acknowledge her husband’s eight-year-old love child and must decide if she’s willing to continue her marriage under vastly different circumstances.
Drawing on the same inner strength that got her through cancer treatment, she is ultimately able to express her disappointment and anger to Rob, while re-affirming her commitment to him and her new step-son.
The greatest test of her inner resolve occurs in Deep End, when a disaster forces her to confront the possibility of life without her beloved husband.
Give her a guiding principle.
Claire’s favorite quote, which also becomes her mantra, is from Goethe: “Nothing is worth more than this day.” It is the perfect summation of who she is and how she approaches her post-cancer life. Not even a life-threatening illness could take away her fun-loving spirit and her determination to live fully, the very qualities that initially attracted Rob to her.
Allow her to have flaws.
She’s far from perfect. Claire worries about her scarred abdomen, disfigured from cancer surgeries. She continues to obsess over Rob’s first wife, a brilliant screenwriter killed in a car accident. Doubts about her relationship and endless taunts by Baby Mama land her in legal trouble and cause her to lose a promising new client. Her loathing of the news media manages to gain her more publicity, instead of less.
Like so many of us, she tends to suppress her negative feelings until they erupt in a damaging way.  Although she struggles at times, the fact that she is able to move past her inner turmoil and re-focus on what is most important in her life makes her a well-rounded and likeable heroine, scars and all.
GENRE: Contemporary Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After years of struggle and harsh criticism, happily married rock star wife Claire Martin has finally achieved the career success of her dreams. As the featured artist in an international traveling exhibit, she looks forward to her best year ever, while her husband, singer Robert Silver of the legendary band Deep Blue, contemplates a return to touring.

Things are also looking up for Claire’s best friend, Denise Hrivnak, who’s planning her wedding to Robert’s musical partner, Art Hoffman. However, what should have been most joyful day of Denise’s life turns to tragedy when an unexpected event forces both woman to contemplate the terrifying possibility of life without the men they love.

Besieged by the paparazzi and sick with worry, Claire waits for answers in a Las Vegas hotel room, thinking over her improbable relationship with Rob and praying that love alone is strong enough to bring her beloved husband back from the brink.

EXCERPT

Before Claire can say a word, I glance across the room to see the older man rise from his chair and begin ambling toward us. When he gets near our table he announces in an apologetic tone, “I don’t mean to disturb your meal, but there’s something I’d like to tell you, Robert, and I’ll never have this chance again.”

Let me guess. He has a friend/relative/colleague who wants to be a singer/songwriter/musician and would I mind listening to his demo? I produce a cursory nod and he continues.

“My wife was a big fan of yours.” His shoulder sag. “She died a few days ago.”

Claire gives him a sympathetic gaze.

“When she went into hospice care, she asked for her little CD player and all her Deep Blue CDs. I wanted you to know your music gave her some happiness and comfort during her final days. Your voice was the last one she heard before she slipped away.”

An enormous lump rises in my throat, rendering me incapable of speech. Claire blinks back tears.

“Do you mind if I give you a hug?” she asks.

Without waiting for an answer, my wife rises and wraps her arms around the grief-stricken stranger for a few seconds. She takes both his hands in hers and says, “Your wife was fortunate to have had someone like you in her life.”

“We were married for 37 years.” His quivering mouth attempts a smile. “I always thought I was the lucky one.”
