When a veterinarian and a construction worker connect, it takes mishaps, mistakes, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Rex to show them they’re made for each other.

Dr. Carter Falon is content living a quiet life in a small town caring for his animal patients. That doesn't mean he's not looking for a distraction. After finding himself precariously wedged… naked and at the mercy of a drop-dead gorgeous construction worker, Carter hires his savior to renovate his home.

When Tanner Grady’s best friend and new niece needed him, he uprooted and relocated without a second thought. His life has since been centered on work and spending time with his family, but when he comes to the rescue of a cute vet, Tanner finds he's a lot more interested in the homeowner than the house he’s renovating.

Excerpt

My eyes widened when they landed on his form. Damn, it wasn’t every day a client greeted me in the nude. Looking at the path between me and who I assumed to be Carter on the ground, I tried not to let my eyes linger for too long on his smooth expanse of skin. He was lightly toned, with a softness about him that was impossible to not notice, despite trying my hardest not to.

With a shake of my head, I calculated each step I took to get to his side. Once I made it safely to the top, the floorboards creaking under my booted feet, Carter angled himself to turn and look at me. Definitely pissed off and in pain, and perhaps a bit mortified too, a light blush covering his cheeks. His gaze roamed me from bottom to top before landing on my own. I quirked my brow in amusement and question while strategically ignoring how fucking pretty his brown eyes were. “So…?” I offered.

He sighed, and I watched in fascination as his Adam’s apple bobbed when he swallowed. “I rushed from the piece-of-crap shower when I heard the knock. My foot went through the board, and it’s stuck.” His pink cheeks turned crimson.

Unable to stay the small smile tugging at my lips, I grinned as I stepped closer. I took my time to get to him, wanting to help the guy out. The last thing he needed was me falling on my ass. Clearing my throat, I crouched down at his side, my focus now on his leg and foot.

The whole area was rotten and would need ripping out. But for the time being, I’d need to tear up the two surrounding boards to get his ankle free. “You have tried to get it out, right?” I felt like a jackass for asking, but it was always best to check first.

Carter huffed out a breath. “Yeah, I did. It’s wedged against something. I tried pulling it out, but it’s a no go. It’s tighter than a virgin ass.”

My gaze whipped to his. What the fuck? With lifted brows, I stared wide-eyed at him, drawing another blush from him.

“Shoot, sorry. That was inappropriate.” His eyes widened in horror. “I meant, it’s wedged. Erm. It’s just wedged tight, and—”

I grinned. “It’s all good. Give me a sec.” The poor guy looked like he wanted to join his foot in the space under the floorboards and curl over. He needed an out, and I needed to get some air in my lungs away from his intoxicating smell and firm thighs, which were impossible to ignore in such close proximity.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

Let Me Show You by Becca Seymour spotlights veterinarian Carter Falon, who is renovating the house he inherited from his grandfather, and Tanner Grady, who has uprooted his life to support his best friend who has become a single dad. A memorable first meeting gradually develops into a sizzling relationship, but it seems that life in the small town of Kirkby may not be as peaceful as they would like.

This contemporary gay romance is a sweet celebration of multiple facets of love—between best friends, adult and child, human and pet, friends, family, and lovers. Although there is a conflict, for me, it seems a little forced and the resolution is even more awkward, but that doesn’t detract from the warmth that is evoked by the love and affection that the rest of the characters share with each other. One can’t help but be charmed by the darling Libby and sweet Rex, touched by the blossoming relationship that develops between the main characters, and amused by Carter’s irrepressible mom. I was a little disappointed that someone with the drive to become a veterinarian would fail to be his own advocate, especially with the support system he has, but I understand that something was needed to provide a bit of angst and possibly lead to a sequel. This is a quick undemanding love story that gives the reader a warm fuzzy feeling and a reason to cheer for two bighearted men who find that missing piece in their lives.

Becoming Magic by Michelle Garren Flye (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by author Michelle Garren Flye, who gives shares her opinion on the fact that...

Sexism Ruins Everything

by

 Michelle Garren Flye

Before I began writing romance, I tried a little of everything. Scifi, fantasy, horror, even a little Southern literature. My objective in writing was always to make things better. When my second son was born, I decided rather than by showing my readers how bad things could get, I should show them how beautiful things can be.

Over the years, my perspective on my chosen genre has morphed. I feel like romance as a genre has been twisted to mean sex. And not just sex, but sexual practices that should probably remain on the fringe of our literature, not showcased on the bestseller shelf. Anyone who thinks that Fifty Shades represents a new sexual revolution needs to pay attention to the headlines. Women are more objectified and abused than ever, and in many cases, it can be traced back to the practices that are glorified in that particular branch of romance.

The truth is, sexism ruins everything. It ruins tennis. Look at what happens on the court to the best women players versus the best men players. Sexism ruins politics and government, movies, comedy—and it’s on the brink of ruining love in general. The reason for this is pretty simple. The war between the sexes is a very real thing. But every time our side wins a battle, the other side pitches a fit.

I persist in optimistically believing I can somehow convince the world that love is a beautiful thing. That romance and sex between two consenting adults has the potential to be uplifting, and that even flirting, when done right, can be fun. I do this by creating characters I hope my readers can relate to and putting them in situations I hope my readers will aspire to. That’s where I believe my genre can make a difference.

Of course, if I wanted to, I could paint a different picture. One where one sex has finally won the war. Where one sex enslaves the other and uses them for procreation only. I’m fairly certain there would be buyers for such books. Probably more than there are for my straighter view of what romance is and can be. Because we all want our side to win the war, and love is about compromise, not winning.

EXCERPT

She looked around, spotting Connor almost immediately. She took a half step toward him and froze, stumbling a little, her eyes on the dark-haired man at the next table. He was the large, powerful type you got used to seeing in Hollywood. The kind who worked out at a gym first thing in the morning and then again at night. He was good-looking in a slick, well-kept way. Nothing about this man was an accident.

And nothing about his appearance should make her want to find the nearest potted plant and puke in it, but that was exactly how she felt, nonetheless. She felt hot and cold in quick fluctuations. She swallowed hard against the bile that rose in her throat and wheeled around, knocking into a waiter with a tray full of glasses as she did, sending them flying with a crystalline clatter.

The icy water erased the need to throw up, but not the need to flee. She wanted to look over her shoulder, to see if Connor had seen, but nothing mattered except getting away now. The world whirled and refocused on a narrow aisle leading her away and she followed.

Chapter 9

A few minutes later, I heard the door open again.

“That was quick,” I said while shuffling cards, not paying attention to Anna’s return. But it wasn’t Anna. It was Naheed…he walked around the corner, and leaned next to me, putting a hand on the back of my chair.

“You forgot your drink,” he said, setting the drink down in front of me while keeping his hand on the back of my chair, essentially enclosing me in his arms.

“Thank you.” I felt the heat emanating from him and I know my face was bright red. I couldn’t breathe. Butterflies were storming around my stomach.

“You’re welcome. Aren’t you going to even say hello? You’re acting like I’m a stranger.”

“Hello,” I said. I haven’t even looked at him yet. I was avoiding that like the plague. I knew our eyes would lock, just like they used to…and I can’t let this get out of hand.

“So, you’re engaged to Dominik. Why him?”

A slight fit of anger made me look up to Naheed; he’s still standing incredibly close to me.

“Why do you care?”

“Because…he’s not the one for you.”

“Ah, how ironic. That’s what my friends said about you.”

“Yeah, I remember.”

“And you still have a girlfriend…so, I guess things ended up the way they were supposed to.”

I got to him; he looked pissed. He was quiet for a minute…then sat in the chair next to me.

“Kara, I’m with her because you walked away. YOU WALKED AWAY from us,” he said loudly.

“What did you expect me to do?”

My review:

3.5 out of 5 stars

Flawed: The Story of Kara and Naheed, Part 1 by Vivian Kohlman is the first book in the ‘Young and Privileged of Washington, DC’ series. This contemporary new adult story centers around Kara, whose love life is complicated and angst-filled. Her relationships with the men who capture her heart seem destined for failure but she always has friends to rely upon, even if they sometimes complicate the healing of her bruised emotions. The uncanny connection she feels for a man named Naheed may be mutual but the obstacles to their relationship may be more than they can overcome.

This story gives a glimpse of a hedonistic lifestyle as Kara and her friends party enthusiastically and patronize all of the “in” restaurants, bars, and night clubs. There is plenty of angst and betrayal accompanying this high life, and one can’t help feeling sorry for her even as it becomes apparent that the men in her life adore her but don’t necessarily make wise choices…but then again, neither does she. It is important to realize that this is Part 1, meaning that there is no clear resolution at the end of the story, not even a “happy for now,” therefore this is not technically a romance. Love scenes are off-page and there is a frequent shift between present and past tense, which I found very distracting. Despite this, I was intrigued by the men in Kara’s life—some of whom seem to be real sweethearts while others were definitely not, not to mention her jet-setting ways and ability to party all night and go to work the next day. Those who enjoy angst-filled stories featuring young fashionable twenty-somethings will undoubtedly like this tale but probably should have the sequel ready and waiting to avoid frustration!

EXCERPT

This is how the story was told to me.

When the midwife brought me into the world, she let out a scream. Hands trembling, she swaddled me in a white blanket, leaving only a small opening so I could breathe. She refused to let my mother see me until my father appeared and stood by her side. Purple mist seeped through the white blanket, staining the midwife’s fingers.

“God help us all. This baby is cursed!” the midwife cried, thrusting me into my father’s arms. She grabbed a rag and tried to scrub the stains off her hands.

As my father unwrapped me, the color drained from his face. My mother, weak from the delivery, reached toward him...or perhaps to me.

“What’s wrong?” After a moment, he held me up.

My mother wailed when she saw her purple baby.

My father turned away from her and laid me in the cradle, far from my mother, his fingers shaking as he bundled me in the plum-colored blanket. He remained silent, wiping his purple stained palms on his pants. The stains wouldn’t stay on him forever... only a few moments...but he didn’t know that then.

“Oh, Samuel,” my mother sobbed. “How did this happen?”

My father gazed into my eyes, and when he finally spoke, his voice broke.

“We’ll call her Violet.” He stroked a tuft of my lavender hair and sank to his knees.

My review:
(slightly revised)
 4 out of 5 stars

The Purple Girl is a sweet children’s book beautifully illustrated by Tory and Norman Taber that tells the tale of a child named Violet who definitely is unlike any others but is loved by her parents anyway.  The townspeople aren’t quite so comfortable with a child who can even turn things she touches to purple and reject her.  A little boy named Frankie challenges her to embrace her difference and eventually she finds that she has something to contribute even as she learns to accept who she is.

This whimsical children’s story is a celebration of the color purple and the importance of finding one’s comfort zone.  There are plenty of obstacles to overcome and Violet chooses her own pathway to become a person who is comfortable with herself.  There were a few threads that I would have liked to have had cleared up but overall this is a fun story that is enhanced by the lovely pictures.
