Exclusive Excerpt:

Holly sat up fast, gasping. She was certain she’d heard an animal howl, almost like it was right beside her. “Declan,” she whispered, reaching for him to find the bed empty. A strangled growl drew her attention partway across the room where Declan stood with his back to her. He was wearing his black shirt again -- or so she thought.

“Declan, are you okay?” She screamed, overcome by terror she’d never felt before.

Declan approached -- except it wasn’t him. His face and body were completely covered in smooth, black hair. Long, pointed ears poked from beneath his shaggy black locks. Amber eyes burned within his hirsute face. The tips of thick, white fangs shone against his full lips.

If this was a nightmare, it was entirely too real, and Holly wasn’t taking any chances. She jumped out of bed and raced toward the door, but even as she reached it, his hand held it shut, and what a hand.

Big. Hairy. Long fingers tipped with sharp claws.

“Oh shit,” Holly said, shaking all over. Her heart pounded so hard she thought she might faint.

“Don’t,” he said, his voice even deeper than usual. “Don’t be afraid. I would never hurt you. Love, Holly.”

“Shit,” Holly murmured again, staring into his eyes. “Declan?”

“I am Rogue,” he said.

“And I am terrified.”

“No. Safe with me. Always.” He moved his hand from the door to cup her face.

Holly flinched, but didn’t move. He turned his hand to stroke her cheek with the back of it. His hand was warm, the fur wiry, like that of a wild animal.

He was an animal.

“How did this happen to you?” she asked. “Is this the project you can’t talk about? Is this what the army wants from you?”

Excerpt:

Two demon guards clad in black body armor entered the barracks. Their red eyes glowed behind dark face shields. They approached Victor and one guard said, “Get up and come with us.”

All the guards sounded and looked alike. They were even the same height and body structure.

Victor knew better than to refuse. There would be no point in fighting, even if he was so inclined.

He guessed he would be going to one of two possible places. It would either be the punishment chamber because he’d killed Slate too quickly or -- and this was more likely -- to the demon masters who had bargained with him to kill for their entertainment.

The guards brought Victor out of the barracks and down a steel corridor to an elevator at the end. They boarded it. Except for the soft whir of the elevator descending, there was silence.

It stopped with an almost imperceptible lurch. The door opened and Victor, accompanied by the guards, stepped into a spacious room with an enormous glass ball in the center of it. Several couches surrounded it. While the upholstery resembled leather, Victor’s sense of smell told him the couches were covered with material that hadn’t come from any four-legged animal.

He’d been in this room before. Here, the demons had bargained with him for the lives of his fellow gladiators, their mates, and their cubs. Here, he’d traded his integrity and his soul for their lives.

The guards disappeared into dark corners of the room.

Since he had no intention of sitting on the foul furniture, Victor stood near the glass ball and waited.

The ball glowed faintly at first. Then it brightened. From within, two demon masters -- one male and one female -- stared at him. He knew they weren’t actually there. The ball was similar to television. He could see and hear them, but they were far away.

The male had ink-black, elbow-length hair. Tall and slim, he was dressed from head to foot in red. The female had short white hair. Her skin was nearly as pale as her form-fitting white dress. Both demons stared at him with black eyes.

“Your game has improved, Victor,” said the male, “but I’m afraid you still haven’t mastered the art of performing. Your kills aren’t entertaining enough, but for now that’s beside the point. We haven’t called you here to critique your style, but for another reason.”

“We have something special planned for you,” the female continued. “There’s a new contender in the tower -- one who has seen you fight and wishes to face you in the arena.”

EXCERPT

Geoffrey and I stepped into one elevator, the others squeezed into the other. I fumbled with the box as the elevator doors closed. The elevator jerked slightly. Geoffrey had pushed the stop button, and gently took the box from my hands as the elevator halted between floors. I grinned, knowing what he was up to. I reached up to his delicious mouth as his cool palms softly held my face.

Whenever our lips touched the link became a hyper wire of electric current. My tongue danced in time with his as his venom flowed into me. Along with my being the mythological link to him, we’d also discovered that I was immune to his venom—but mind you, it still had its drawbacks. Sure, it gave me enhanced senses and physical abilities, but it also made me sicker than a dog if the dose was too big, basically a nasty hangover.

Just as his icy fingers skimmed my waist, the call buzzer rang, interrupting our moment. I had about two seconds before he pulled away, so I held him tighter to me, tugging on his delicious lower lip a bit longer, and his fingers grazed the top of my hips, which only made me want him more.

Damn buzzer. And I was just getting started, too. He grinned as I tucked my shirt back in.

“At least we won’t have interruptions to worry about anymore,” he said aloud as he tucked my hair back behind my ear, sending a small thrill through me.

Note from ELF: Sorry, I must have gremlins in my laptop this week. THIS is the correct picture for the author, I apologize for any confusion!

Catherine Russell was born in Tacoma, Washington and raised in a small town just south, South Hill, Puyallup. At the time South Hill was a heavily wooded area and far off the beaten path. Growing up she had the forests as her fantasy world along with the wild animals. She lived with her parents and an older sister. There are a few similarities from her own childhood that have carried over in to her first novel, “The Stage”. As a child, she did have a small dog named Toto, whom she would quite frequently roam the woods with. Her childhood home still stands, and is still nestled in the woods even though South Hill has undergone an extreme makeover since she lived there. She enjoyed hours of day dreaming and playing in the woods, which in turn fed her fantasy world of make believe.

Lake Of Sins: Hangman's Army by L. S. O'Dea (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author L.S. O'Dea, who shares...

My Advice For New Writers
by L.S. O'Dea

Hmm.  There’s so much that I’ve learned since I published my first book that it’s hard to pick exactly what to tell a new author.

First, I’d tell them – write!  Don’t worry about getting it right the first time, just get it down.  Let the characters lead you on the journey.  They’re usually more fascinating than you think.

Once your story is done in rough draft – edit, edit, edit.  I edit so much, I get sick of my own books, but I don’t let that stop me.  Even though I don’t want to read it again for the thirtieth time in three months, I do.  I read it and edit it over and over until I’m not changing anything.  Then and only then is it ready for publication.  Putting out something that’s not as perfect as you can possibly make it is cheating your readers.  So, don’t do it.

I’m not saying that my books are perfect because they aren’t.  There are still a few typos and perhaps a misspelling.  I’m only human and so are my beta readers.  We miss things.  It’s a fact of life.  However, the story is as clean as possible.  I remove anything that isn’t needed.  I’m ruthless and so should you be.  It doesn’t matter if the paragraph is the most beautiful piece of prose you’ve ever written.  If it doesn’t add to the story then it has to go.  Period!  No exceptions!

Now, once you have your book ready – publish.  I used to think I was done at this point, but this is where the real work starts (at least in my opinion).  Marketing doesn’t come naturally to me, but it’s part of the process.

So, to all you aspiring authors – start reading up on how to market your books.  Check out forum and other writers’ blogs.  Goodreads has a good forum called “Best Bang For Your Buck” that lists a lot of the promoters that help and hurt.  There are a lot – A LOT – of people out there willing to take your money and give you almost nothing in return.  Beware.

Of course, you have to stay open to new things but do your research.  The best marketing tool I have used so far is Nick Stephenson’s “Your First 10K Readers” course.  It’s not cheap and I thought long and hard about signing up, but it has been worth it (I’m not affiliated with him in anyway).
Final words – good luck.  I have to believe that if you turn out a good story the readers will come (kind of like Field of Dreams and perhaps that’s all it is…my dream).

GENRE: YA, Dystopian Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A rebellion is brewing in the world of the Lake of Sins while Hugh Truent sits in prison days away from his execution.
After taking his findings about the genetic similarities between the classes to the Supreme Almighty and the Council, Hugh had been arrested for treason and all his evidence had vanished as if made from smoke.
To protect his family, he cut off all contact with the outside world while he sat in prison for over four years waiting for his execution. He has no idea that some of his reports were leaked to the other classes and that civil war looms on the horizon.
Trinity and her friends have no hope of winning the war unless they can unite the classes. In order to do that, they need someone everyone will follow. They need the one person all the classes trust and believe in. They need Hugh.
That means they have to break him out of a maximum security prison and convince him to lead their army, but that won’t be easy because Hugh wants revenge and he’s not going to let anything get in his way especially mouthy, attractive, know-it-all Trinity.
Hugh
“What do you suggest we do?”  From this position, the next tree was quite a distance away.  The River-Men waited in the water below.  He didn’t want to go back but he didn’t think they had a choice.
She went farther out on the branch toward the other tree.  “Do you think you can jump?”  She turned toward him, her golden eyes searching his face.  “Don’t lie.  If you miss, you die.”
“I’ll never make that jump.”  There was no room for manly bravado in this situation.
She stared at him for another moment and then leapt.  The River-Men dipped below the surface and then back up as she landed safely on the other tree.  His heart thudded in his chest.  She wasn’t leaving him.  She wouldn’t do that.  He had faith in her.  He trusted her, but his stomach knotted.  He’d trusted before and had been betrayed.
She tied the end of the rope around the trunk of the tree.  “Do you think you can cross on the rope?  If you don’t, I’ll come back, but then we’ll have to backtrack and that means sleeping in the swamp tonight.”
His arms and back ached and his hands were a bloody mess, but he could do this.  He had to do this.  “Throw me the rope.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”  He wasn’t sure at all but they didn’t have time to go back.  He caught the rope and tied it to the trunk of the tree, making sure it was tight-really, really tight.  Then he grabbed the taut rope and wrapped his ankles over the top of it.  Hand over hand, he moved away from the safety of the tree.  He glanced down.  The River-Men were swimming faster, excited and anticipating a meal.
Dark Communion by CJ Perry (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
by CJ Perry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Dark Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A cursed line of Minotaurs has kept Ayla’s people enslaved for 200 years. With nothing left to live for and a death sentence in her womb, Ayla trades her soul to a dark goddess for a chance to break the curse that keeps her people in chains. Armed with only her faith, Ayla and her brethren lead a revolution against an army of half-beasts led by the immortal son of the Goddess Herself.
EXCERPT
The minotaur caught up to Deetra and pushed her down into the sand. Deetra rolled away, but he stood over her, menacing and taunting her. She kicked out at his crotch but missed.
Ayla gave the heavy iron bars a futile shake. “Open this! Now! DEETRAA!”
Alex pried Ayla's hands off the gate and held them. “You can't save her! We have to go, now!”
Ayla snatched her hands away from him. Deetra screamed from the arena floor and the crowd cheered. Ayla turned to look but Alex grabbed her again, by the shoulders.
“We have time to run, but only if we leave now!”
“Get off of me!” Ayla slapped Alex in the mouth. He recoiled and held a hand where she hit him. Ayla pushed him by the chest and accused the other men in the ready room with her eyes.
“Open it.”
Butch pushed between the others and shoved Alex out of the way.
“You heard the Priestess.”
Ayla eyed him as he bent at the knees. He gripped the bottom bar of the portcullis and rolled his shoulders to ready himself.
“My people are still loyal to the Night Goddess.”
The other men lined up on either side of him.
Ayla gave Alex a stern look. “Are mine?”
He shook his head, defeated, and took his place next to Butch. “We’re gonna die.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
My deep and abiding love of fantasy began when I was six when I first saw the 1981 film Dragonslayer on VHS with my father. He loved fantasy movies too, but didn’t have the courage to be a dork about it like I did. That movie was a gateway drug that led me straight to the hard stuff - CS Lewis. I was far too young for such potency but by the time I was ten I had read the whole series. That’s when I found my first Dungeons and Dragons group. When I started playing, my friends and I used pre-made campaign settings and published adventures, but I quickly grew restless with their limitations and trite story lines. I needed my own persistent world: something adaptable to my whim and that no one else owned.
Back in my day, there was no internet, so I took out every book about castles and medieval history from the school library and read them in Math class (I'm still terrible at math as a result). I came up with an entire world and brand new history. I read books on cartography and hand drew maps of my new world. I created a cosmology, a hierarchy of gods, and the tenets of their religions. I read the Dungeon Master's guide a dozen times, and every fantasy novel I could get my hands on.
Then, one day, I sat down and told my friends, "Hey guys, wanna try my story instead?"
Even 15 years after the original D&D campaigns ended, former players tell me that they share our incredible stories with their children. I'm honored to say that most of those players still have their original character sheets 16-20 years later, and a couple have even named their children after them.
Now, I'm 39 years old and a loving father of 2 girls, and I still play those games on occasion. My passion has evolved into putting those ideas and amazing stories on paper for the whole world to enjoy. My first novel took me and co-author DC Fergerson 10 years to write and topped out at 180,000 words. Being too long and too complex, I finally ended the project and took its lessons to heart.
I learned that Dungeons & Dragons did not translate well into a novel. D&D made for great times, but also for some meandering plot lines, pointless encounters, and poor character motivations. No matter how memorable some of the moments were, if I wanted anyone to read my story, I needed to learn a lot more about writing.
I threw myself into being a full time student of novel crafting. I read every book on writing by Dwight Swain I could find. I paid Chuck Sambuchino (Editor for Writer's Digest) to critique and edit my older work. I took James Patterson's Masterclass, went to college, and joined online writing communities. All the while, I read my favorite fantasy novels again, only this time with a mental highlighter. I reworked my stories, outlined them, and decided to start from the beginning.
Many, many years later, I am in the final edit and proofreading stage of Dark Communion, the first installment of the Shadowalker Chronicles. My role as a father of two girls heavily influenced the characters I’d known for over 20 years, shaping them into women that my own daughters could respect. My characters took on a depth and quality that brings them off the page and into the minds of readers, because they have become all too real. I was privileged enough to work on two careers at the same time to accomplish this feat - a fun-loving and involved stay-at-home dad, and a full time writer.
My review:
3.5 out of 5 stars
Dark Communion by CJ Perry is a dark fantasy that starts the ‘Godswar Chronicles’ series. It is a twist on the tales of the minotaur, giving the story of the origin of the half bull-half human creature and his descendants. Those with triggers should be warned that there is a dark and twisted connection between minotaurs and those forced to bear their offspring, and considerable violence accompanying the struggle to overthrow these cruel and oppressive beings. Although there is a certain degree of satisfying resolution, this story serves as the introduction to a series so there are dangling threads.
I thought there were interesting twists on the Greek myth but events got a little hectic and confusing for me at times, as events unfolded and more bits of the world were revealed. I wasn’t quite convinced of the deep and supposedly romantic connection that forms between two major characters and I was puzzled by the dichotomy between the powers that get conferred and the lack of protection that often accompanied them. I think it would be great if subsequent stories give a little more depth to the various characters and a clearer idea of the pantheon that governs this world. This story includes elements of loyalty and treachery, courage and cowardice, and mystical and pragmatic occurrences that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of epic fantasy.
Sword of Shadows by Karin Rita Gastreich (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post from author Karin Rita Gastreich, who shares her answer to my question...
ELF:  What is one of your hobbies and how has it enriched your writing?
KRG:  Dance has always been an important part of my life. As a girl, I started out with classical training: jazz, tap, and ballet. In college, I was introduced to modern dance. I belonged to my university dance troupe, performed regularly, and even choreographed a few numbers.
Throughout grad school and into my career as an ecologist, I kept up modern dance. While living in Costa Rica, I studied at the Taller Nacional de Danza and participated in some of their performances as well. When I moved back to my home town of Kansas City, I began studying flamenco.
Dance is a perfect integration of grace and power. Mastering a dance is never easy, and whenever I succeed in tackling a new choreography, it gives me a deep sense of satisfaction and joy. More importantly, dance has led to many great friendships and wonderful experiences over the years. I especially enjoy the camaraderie of performances and the excitement of being on stage.
When I began writing The Silver Web, I decided to make dance, music, and other forms of art part of the magical system in Eolyn’s world. I wanted to give Eolyn the experience of being in a dance troupe, so I invented Corey’s Circle, a group of traveling performers that gives Eolyn a home when she first returns to her people. In Eolyn, Book One of The Silver Web, Corey’s Circle dominates about a third of the story. In book two, Sword of Shadows, music comes to the forefront as a form of magic that helps Adiana cope with the terror of war and imprisonment.
My experience as a dancer even helps me in the process of writing. I consider writing a form of choreography, except one uses words instead of movement. Much like when I used to choreograph dances, I often listen to music when choreographing a scene. The same creative process that once helped me link steps together now helps me weave dialogue and action into a single whole.
For me, dance really is a form of magic, one that has brought many blessings into my life, and one that I hope to share with my readers through the stories I write.
EXCERPT
A hush of wings on the windowsill interrupted Eolyn’s thoughts. She looked up to see a Great River Owl, its proud silhouette outlined by moonlight.
Eolyn rose to her feet in surprise, keenly aware of its penetrating gaze, though she could not see its round eyes in the dark. A breeze ruffled its feathers. Its aura was impossibly familiar: intense shades of gold, burgundy, and forest green, shot through with streaks of deepest indigo.
She held her breath and let it go in a whisper. “Akmael?”
More than a question, it was a hope, a fear, an invocation.
A shimmer passed through the owl, followed by a flash of white light. Suddenly Akmael was with her, the heat of his hand upon her throat, the strength of his fingers intertwining in her hair, the demand of his lips upon hers, warm and full of passion. The magic of the South Woods blew through the window in a humid gust, swirling about them, begging Eolyn to remember who she was and what she once meant to him.
Akmael kissed Eolyn until she had no more breath to give. Then he paused and held her close, their foreheads touching as her fingers traced the familiar prominence of his cheekbone, the line of his jaw, the curve of his full lips.
All she could hear was his desire, carried on the rhythm of his heart. She dared not speak, for if she did, she might stumble upon words of caution or prudence or common sense, and none of that had any place here. Not when he was so near, nearer than he had been in such a painfully long time, closer than he might ever be again.
This is a gift from the Gods, Akmael had once said. To deny it would be an insult to them.
“Eolyn, I—”
She hushed him with a kiss.
