Temptation and Treachery by Sahara Roberts (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

by Sahara Roberts
ADULT title
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Andres “Rio” Rivera became his ICE profile years ago. Cold and calculating, he never promises anything beyond right now. But when he ends up with a cancelled flight and a shared hotel room with the secretive Celeste Patron, the fire behind Celeste’s buttoned-up exterior melts every barrier. He may only have her for one night, but that’s long enough to make her every fantasy come true.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
“Come on.” Kari led them back to the infirmary, taking her time with each step. “I’m going to try putting the pieces together myself. Stop me if I’m off track.” They walked away from the edge of the clearing. “I figure you didn’t just meet Rio yesterday.”
Celeste kept her expression neutral.
“In fact, from the way he was acting, I’d say the last time you saw him was three weeks and two to three days ago.” She held up a finger. “Well, three to four, since that was a day ago.”
It shouldn’t surprise her that Kari had figured things out on her own. Did everyone else know? Did they realize he’d played her for a fool? She closed her eyes, wondering if everyone in the chow hall was laughing at her, even know.
“Oh, come one. When you two were together there was so much sexual tension in the room I thought I’d end up pregnant.”
Oh damn, she’d hoped she’d been wrong about that.
“There’s no reason you can’t pick up where you were back then.”
Celeste’s gaze snapped to Kari. Did she mean sex? If so, no. She shook her head. They wouldn’t be picking up there. She’s been seduced for one reason, and one reason alone. To get the Ayala cartel.
“Rio’s an intense guy, and the way he looks at you…” She looked over and winked. “Well, as long as he doesn’t launch himself off the ceiling fan, you should be good.”
Synopsis:
A little temptation never hurt anyone…
Lance Townsend craves freedom after years living a structured existence in the Army. But just as he’s about to start on his bucket list, Lance receives an unexpected request: check in on his goddaughter. The problem? The adorable little girl’s aunt is the one woman he’s never been able to forget.
Carly Quigley can’t believe her brother’s best friend, the man who jilted her years ago, is at her door. He claims her brother asked him to check in on her niece and their fixer-upper, but all either of them can focus on is their undeniable attraction. Carly knows Lance is counting down the hours to leave, which makes him the wrong man for her. Unfortunately, the wrong man has become oh-so-tempting.
Excerpt:
They walked back into the kitchen. Carly faced him. “What time is Mya coming home? Do I need to pick her up?”
            “Caitlin’s mom said she would drop her off.” He looked down at his watch. “In about two hours from now.”
            Carly put her hands in the pockets of her jeans and rolled back on her heels. “Wow, two whole hours, Mya-free. Just me and you.”
            She said it lightly, but as soon as the words were out of her mouth, the implication that they were alone filled the room. No Mya, no interruptions.
            They stood on opposite sides of the table. He could see her chest rising and falling as the silence between them dragged on. His palms were damp and he wiped them on his jeans.
            God, she was so damn beautiful. Taking in her gorgeous body, the usual reminder that he shouldn’t look at his best friend’s sister like this didn’t surface. In fact, he’d stopped thinking about her as Chris’s sister days ago.
            Those green eyes that sparkled as if they were laughing at all times. Her luxurious red hair. All of those womanly curves packed into her petite body. What man would be able to resist her?
            Not me. Not anymore.
Synopsis:
Some words last forever…
It’s been six months since Ashlyn Daniels was kicked out of her home. Six months since she stood up to her abusive stepfather and got a busted rib-and seeing all her things set ablaze in a backyard bonfire-for her trouble. Never going back. She doesn’t need trouble…especially if trouble is tattoo artist Lane Garrett, who’s six-feet-plus of tattooed hotness and a complete ass.
Lane has spent the last decade fighting to support his family. To protect them. There’s no room for romance, even with a fragile (yet amusingly feisty) stunner…even if she somehow manages to invade his world and his heart.
But while some secrets are as visible as ink on the skin, others must remain hidden at all costs…
Excerpt:
“No one is going to hurt you,” I whisper against the top of her head. “Not while I got you.” And I mean every word. In this moment, while cradling this broken girl, I would rip the arms off anyone who tried to lay a finger on her.
Her shuddering stills, and Ashlyn loops her arms around my neck and claws her fingers into the fabric of my T-shirt. Her tears trail down my neck and bleed into my shirt collar. Her grip on my neck is almost choking, but I don’t say a word. In this moment I will be whatever she needs me to be—even if that’s just something to hold onto.
I wrap my arms around her and pull her tight against me. She feels too skinny and too frail in my grasp. A small voice in my head screams at me to stop, to let her go and walk her straight out of the shop, locking the door behind her. But the strength required to release her is more than I can gather.
He barks out a laugh. “Is that so? Well, what’s an ogre without his ogre princess?” He grabs for the paint pan and dips his hand into it. “The transformation is almost complete. Looks like we missed a spot.” He points a paint-covered finger at my forehead. “Don’t you dare!” I kick my legs in an attempt to scoot away. “No you don’t!” With sticky fingers, Lane grabs my wrists, pinning them to the floor. He swings a leg over my waist, straddling me. He leans down, his chest heaving. “Are you going to say ‘Uncle’?” A charge of electricity passes between us, buzzing beneath my skin and catching my breath in my throat. My smile fades as a flush courses over me. The heat from his hands feels as if it’s searing my wrists, and yet I don’t want him to let go. Even as the room wavers and the entire world feels like it’s falling away, he holds on. “Uncle.” The word is barely a whisper as it leaves my throat. “Too late,” he says, and I know he’s right. The wall I’ve worked so hard to build between us is crumbling with each breath I take. I actually have to fight the urge to buck my hips toward his, to close the cruel distance between us. I’ve been falling for so long and he’s the first person to hold on. Without warning, his lips crash against mine like a tidal wave. He swallows my gasp of surprise as his tongue meets mine. His mouth tastes sweet, and there’s an urgency to his kiss. His hands grip tighter and his mouth works harder against mine, almost as if he’s trying to drink me in. I kiss him back, just as hard, because if he can drink me in, I’ll let him. And then I’d remain there for always, a part of the man who wouldn’t let go.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPTS

Fortunately, he found her five seconds later. The woman wasn't anywhere near halfway to Maine, but by all accounts, she was about halfway from an embarrassing 911 call.

"What do you think you're doing?" he barked, coming up behind her.

Maddie—whose forearm was wedged up one of his vending machine drop slots—lifted her pert nose at him as if she were royalty and he a common serf. "I'm retrieving my Diet Coke, thank you very much."

He smothered a grin. "Well, before you can retrieve your soda, you must first insert your money."

She huffed out an exaggerated breath. "I understand that, Captain Obvious, and I already did. This stupid machine moved the can just close enough not to fall. It's probably the owner's way of getting extra money."

He bit down on his tongue at that remark, considering he was the owner.

Maddie shoved her arm farther up the slot. "I almost have it."

"Will you take your arm out of there before we have to saw it off?"

Fire sprung in those blue eyes of hers, making her look even more adorable, he decided. Like angry Tinker Bell. "Don't tell me what to do."

Trent gazed heavenward. Great. Not only would he have to place that 911 call when her arm got stuck, but then he'd probably have to call his attorney, too, for when she sued him. It wasn't such a wonder anymore why she needed help getting that wedding date. This woman was trouble with a capital T.

Trying a different tactic, he gently placed a hand on her shoulder and leaned in. "You're right. It's none of my business. Stay in that position all day if you want. The guy on treadmill number two is getting quite the view. One more deep squat and I guarantee he'll be asking for your number."

"What?" Cheeks on fire, she sprung up. She glanced behind her then turned toward him with narrowed eyes. "Hey, that was a dirty trick. There's no guy over there."

"No, but if there were he would have been treated to a dazzling display of hot pink thong. Not to mention that I'm sure my ‘dirty trick’ just saved you at least eight weeks of physical therapy. And by the way, you're welcome."

For Love or Vengeance, spotlight and review

For Love or Vengeance by Caridad Pineiro is part of the 'Reborn Vampire' series.

Blurb:

FBI Special Agent Helene Alexander is a goddess.  An actual frickin’ goddess. And her mission is clear, see that justice is served at all times or her days as a goddess are numbered.

Helene’s new FBI partner defines good-looking, but Miguel Sanchez, wants nothing to do with her ends-justify-the-means attitude. He knows through experience the type of guilt her actions can bring and Miguel wants nothing to do with Helene’s careless ways. Even if she’s so damned hot she makes him burn with the need.

When the serial killer they’re tracking strikes again, Helene and Miguel are drawn into a case that will challenge their most fundamental beliefs about justice and vengeance. But it’s the passion between them that forces a goddess to choose: eternal life with all her powers...or death—to save the man she loves.

Excerpts:

“My job was to protect her,” he finally said through a tightness in his chest that threatened to strangle him.

To his shock, she reached up and cradled the side of his face. Her palm was smooth. So smooth. So warm and…comforting. He had never expected that a woman as hard as Helene could offer comfort, but there it was, adding yet another intriguing layer to his partner. That sensation coursed through him, freeing up the tension in his chest so he could breathe again.

“It was her time. Nothing you did could have changed that,” she said with absolute certainty.

Her words resonated within him, bringing unexpected peace as if she were a priest who had just granted him absolution.

He brushed his hand against the thick waves of her hair and urged them away from her cheek. Then he dug his fingers into their softness, cupped her jaw, and tracked his thumb along the edge of her mouth.

“Thank you,” he said, at a loss to find any other words to express what he was feeling. Knowing in his gut that there was only one thing that might.

He leaned forward until her warm breath spilled against his lips. Her gaze filled with part surprise and part anticipation. A heartbeat later, he allowed insanity to take over.

* * * *

Helene’s breath became trapped in her chest as Miguel closed the distance between them and covered her mouth with his.

Craziness, she thought for a millisecond before all that he was—all that goodness and honor and sexiness—made her lose her head. Her supposedly more powerful refined goddess senses didn’t stand a chance against the wonder of his kiss.

He moved lightly against her mouth, an invitation rather than a command, as if knowing the latter would have been refused. Tentatively she accepted, meeting the sweep of his lips and deepening the contact. She opened her mouth to taste him and permit his exploration as he eased the tip of his tongue in to graze hers.

She moaned with need and the unexpected desire he aroused. The sound was loud in the quiet of the room. So loud it awakened them from whatever insanity had possessed them, breaking them apart.

They were both breathing heavily as she stood there, her fists clenched against the desire to reach for him again.

Someone walking in might have assumed they were fighting. And maybe they were. She was definitely fighting—for control.

He spoke first. “I’m sorry, Helene. That was out of line.”

“No need to apologize. We’re both adults and desire is a natural thing,” she said, attempting to downplay her fear that it had been much more than passion that had brought them together.

It worked. Miguel wasn’t the kind of man who indulged in desire just for desire’s sake. That would be too shallow. His lips—those mobile, engaging lips that had only seconds before brought her such pleasure—became a pencil-thin line.

“It won’t happen again,” he said, and before she could utter another word, he stalked from the room.

My review:

“For Love or Vengeance” by Caridad Pineiro is part of the ‘Reborn Vampire’ series and is an intriguing paranormal tale that mixes Greek mythological characters with contemporary situations.  The goddess Nemesis is seeking to escape the horrific attentions of her father, Zeus, and is on earth to exact justice, in this lifetime by posing as FBI agent Helene Alexander.  She is not the only newbie at her new field office and her newly assigned and reluctant partner Miguel Sanchez is also trying to settle in at his new location.  Their uneasy partnership will have significant challenges, not least of which is the race to catch a serial killer before another murder takes place.  Helene can’t reveal her primary directive but gradually her prickly partner causes her to realize that she may need to change her priorities and learn to depend on someone other than herself. Unfortunately the partnership may be forced to end before it really begins.

This entertaining story that combines a goddess and the procedures of the FBI provides an exciting tale as the search for a serial killer intensifies.  There are hints of the presence of various immortals but the action centers primarily on Nemesis in her human-seeming incarnation who has some trouble displaying human emotions.  There are a few disturbing elements (especially Zeus’ unnatural interest in his daughter) and some unexplained occurrences that aren’t quite resolved but the overall story is a fun read.  I am not quite sure how this relates to the Reborn Vampires but I surmise that subsequent stories will address that.  The emotional obstacles that both main characters have to overcome provide a nice depth to the story and I hope that we get more of their adventures.  I look forward to more stories by this fun author.
