A new tale of danger and desire from national bestselling author Shiloh Walker featuring psychic FBI Agent Vaughnne MacMeans…

An Assignment She Can't Refuse

Agent Vaughnne MacMeans would do anything to avoid setting foot in Orlando again. But her new assignment, keeping tabs on a psychic kid who may or may not be in danger, is forcing her right back to the city where her sister was murdered. And she didn’t count on a startling attraction to the boy’s guardian…

An Attraction He Can't Deny

Protecting Alex is a priority for Gus. Gus may not understand the young man’s “gift” but he knows that some people would kill for it. When a beautiful stranger moves in next door, his impulse is to take the kid and bolt. But Gus has learned never to flee without a plan, and besides…she doesn’t exactly look like an assassin.

A Game They'll Play For Keeps

But when some dangerous people from Gus’s past do catch up to him and Alex, it’s too late to run. His new neighbor is the last person he thought he could turn to, but Vaughnne isn’t just beautiful. She’s fearless. And she’s the only chance Gus and Alex have left.

My Review:

4 1/2 out of 5 stars
The Protected by Shiloh Walker is part of the enthralling ‘FBI Psychics’ series and features people with extraordinary mental abilities.  Vaughnne MacMeans appeared in a previous story in this series and has had very traumatic experiences that she is trying to recuperate from.  She reluctantly accepts an assignment to ‘babysit’ a pair of individuals who aren’t to know about her task but she is shocked to realize that her mental skills will be sorely tested by an ostensibly simple duty.  Gus Hernandez and his young relative are shockingly tense and exhausted but their wary tolerance of their new neighbor is overridden by the danger that she seems to represent.  Vaughnne’s reluctant attraction to both of them is tempered by her assessment that they represent just as much danger to her.  The question becomes whether their alliance will be more harm than help and whether they will all survive to work out their relationship.

I am a big fan of stories that feature those with extraordinary mental capabilities so this is a series that appeals to me immensely.  Combine that with Shiloh Walker’s ability to create remarkably intense and unique characters who are extremely memorable and I am a very happy reader.  I love the way there are cameos by some of the intriguing people from previous tales and I definitely hope there will be additional books that feature  some of the secondary players in this story.  Gus’ young charge is a fascinating combination of powerhouse and impressionable kid who is being honed by all of the stresses he is under and one wonders whether he will shatter from the pressure or get polished into an invaluable diamond.  The amazing powers that are described encompass quite a range of abilities and the enigmatic Mr. Taylor Jones continues to manipulate the resources at his command and frustrate his agents, whetting one’s appetite for more hints about his background.  I always look forward to more works from this talented author and this book is a wonderful example of her ability to create a vivid and enthralling story and I can only hope that the series continues to grow.

A Novella of the FBI Psychics

Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away.

Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best.

For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside.
Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power.

But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do.

My review:

“The Unwanted” by Shiloh Walker is a novella in the ‘FBI Psychics’ series. Destin Mortin is a psychic whose abilities connect her with sexual predators and aid her in tracking them. Her failed relationship with Caleb Durand is painfully revisited when he is brought in from his latest FBI assignment to assist her. Caleb’s own abilities have garnered him a position away from the woman who both completed and tortured him and they both have gathered visible and non-visible scars as they struggle to survive without one another. They will have to resolve their issues if they plan to move on with their lives, let alone solve the case which has even more ties to them than they realized.

This mesmerizing tale provides a glimpse of intriguing characters who have remarkable powers that wreak their own cost upon those who are blessed (or cursed) with these amazing talents. This author always seems to provide starkly emotional tales that feature people who are somewhat damaged yet have found a way to continue to function, not always efficiently, but enough to survive. This is a great vignette that gives an insight into the lives of two driven people who are scarred and tied together by bonds that they are not sure they want to maintain. The mulitlayering that characterize Ms. Walker’s tales is apparent in this tale that showcases several complicated people and prompts a desire to read more of this series. I am hopeful that there will be many more stories in this fascinating series although I admit that I am torn because I am anxious to read more in another of this talented author’s series. If only she could clone herself and work on both at once!

Reunited by Shiloh Walker

Just to remind you that Shiloh Walker's new novel in the FBI Psychics series is being released Feb. 5, 2013 (and Happy Birthday to my best friend...may you have a wonderful day!)  My Amazon review is at this link.

From the national bestselling author of The Departed comes an all new novel of danger, intrigue, and a love stronger than death…

AN ETERNAL DESIRE
With his strong psychic ability, FBI Agent Joss Crawford longs for the woman he loved in a past life. But after years of searching, a new case is drawing him into the last place he’d ever want to find her: an underground slave ring. Going undercover to infiltrate the network, he meets Drucella Chapman—the mastermind’s fiancée. Joss has every reason to believe she’s evil. So why is he irresistibly drawn to her?

A DANGEROUS GAME
Drucella has made it her personal mission to bring the slave ring down. But the sadistic ring leader is even more careful than he is cruel. In order to gain information, Dru has had to get close to the very man she wishes to kill, using her gift to read his memories bit by bit. She’d do anything to finish the job, but agreeing to marry him may have been a step too far—even for her.

A FATEFUL ENCOUNTER
Though Joss and Dru are both undercover, nothing can disguise the sense of déjà vu they experience when they meet. Neither can afford to be distracted from the mission at hand, but perhaps their reunion is exactly what this mission needs…

Hands jammed in his pockets, he headed down the strip, no particular destination in mind.  As a tiny little girl–dressed in a wide-skirted dress of sunny yellow–cut in front of him, he almost tripped over his feet to keep from tripping over her.  Geez, what did she have on her feet, rockets?
Her mother came running out of a store after her and automatically, Joss took a step to cut her off.  The little girl stopped in her tracks and smiled up at him, her mouth smeared with chocolate, a rather marked contrast with the glittery stuff on her eyes, her hair.
“I think somebody’s looking for you,” he said, nodding to the frazzled woman just before the lady could catch her arm.
She gave him a thankful look and as they melted back into the crowd, Joss did the same, moving with the flow.
Nothing here, he thought, distracted, nothing…
The road veered in a path off to the left.  It wasn’t a conscious decision to follow it, but he did so, following it around the curve, passing behind a shop to a small alcove.
And he came up short, freezing in his tracks.
There she was…it was the woman he’d glimpsed earlier, in that figment of a vision, just before the dream had fallen apart, but that gut deep recognition…he knew her.
     He knew her face.
Joss Crawford wasn’t prone to melodrama, he wasn’t prone to wishful thinking and he didn’t much believe in fairy tales or anything about crazy tales of love at first sight.
But the woman striding down the pavement, her face grim, her eyes dark…the sight of her was a punch, straight to his heart.  She didn’t look like she should, part of his brain insisted, but it didn’t matter.
He knew her, damn it.  Standing rigid, barely able to breathe, much less move, he waited for her to look at him, to see him…to know him.  But it didn’t happen.
In fact, she was so busy staring at the pavement and making a concentrated effort to ignore everything around her, she didn’t even seem to notice.  She went to pass around him and he just couldn’t stop him–he stepped right into her path so that she crashed straight into his chest.
She plowed into him, that body, all lean limbs and long muscles and golden, sunkissed skin, a nice, solid weight that he figured would fit his body just about perfectly.  She stumbled and he reached up, closed his hands around the upper part of her arms, where the cotton of her shirt kept him from touching bare flesh.
He wanted to touch bare flesh…after all this time, he figured he just about needed to.  But not now.
Right now, she was staring up at him with dazed, distrustful eyes–wariness flashed through them and he felt her tense.
“I’m sorry,” she said coolly. Oh.  That voice.  He loved it.  Elegant and sexy as all get-out, crisp and clean and so damned proper.  “I didn’t see you standing there.”
“No problem,” he said.  It wasn’t what he wanted to say, but after all of this time, he didn’t know what to say.  Damn it.  She was here.
Images, bits of memory from that other life danced through his mind.
Standing by the waterside, almost just like this.
Her face lifted up to his.  That first stolen kiss.
The sound of her laughter.  Watching as she brushed her hair…golden hair then, long, past her waist.  It had been beautiful.  Her hair was dark now, nearly as dark as his own, sleek and shiny in a braid that fell over her shoulder, the tip of it curving over her breast.  He wanted to unravel that braid, fist his hands in her hair and cover her mouth with his, taste her again.
