I get through the rest of the day. I feed the horses, wash their faces, brush their coats, pick up poop, then walk Molly, fill the bird feeders, clean the litter box. In between, I hug an old teddy bear. Actually, it’s more than a hug. I cleave to my bear like a life preserver keeping me afloat against the waves of despair that threaten to drown me.

 

And…finally…I cry.

 

Sometimes I just stop what I’m doing, slump to the ground, and wail. It is the most awful, primitive sound and I can’t believe it’s pouring from me.

 

Molly comes to me, tail wagging, ears back, offering the comfort of her warm, soft tongue. I reassure her that it’s okay, that I’m okay, and I climb up from the ground and soldier on.

 

Then there are merciful respites where the pain still exists but I’m too drained to express it. But the best moments are when numbness takes over and I simply exist. It feels like the aftermath of a funeral, when the anguish of death has subsided and all that’s left are soft, graveside tears.

“A School of Daughters” by Kate Rene MacKenzie follows Kate Willoughby as she navigates the painful journey of discovery that results from a card addressed to her husband of twenty-two years. Navigating between the blind trust she’s always had in his love and support and the unpalatable realization that she needs to rediscover herself and her self-reliance, Kate relies on the unstinting love that she’s shown all those around her, including her rescued animals, to bring her through her darkest days.

 

This women’s fiction story is somewhat depressing to read, especially at this time of the year, but it is a compelling story that is leavened by the interludes of vivid description of the beauty of nature and the valuable lessons and gifts that come from interacting with various rescue animals. I am sorry to admit that I identify with many of the heroine’s feelings of betrayal and sadness, having watched my mom practice her own version of deliberate blindness to my father’s indiscretions, just as Kate has done. It is frustrating to watch the seesawing of Kate’s emotions and actions as she reveals episodes she’s suppressed or ignored, even though I can understand her reluctance to see the enormity of betrayal that has been perpetrated.

 

The author paints wonderful word-portraits of life in two very different states, contrasting the dangers of bears and moose in Alaska with the smaller life-threatening creatures such as snakes and scorpions in Arizona. Her artful descriptions of the various animals she interacts with brings them to life, and I will be thinking about Winston the packrat and Albert and Victoria for quite some time.

 

I think this is a story that should be approached with caution by those with triggers about infidelity, but one should be reassured and inspired by this woman’s journey and ultimate resilience. Part cautionary tale, part travelogue, and part inspirational tale in support of adopting strays, this story is well worth reading, even if you’re an incurable fan of happy ever afters like me.

Loraine Conn grew up on the outskirts of Upper Hutt, New Zealand. Her backyard encompassed the surrounding farmland, river, hills, and mountains which she wandered with her brothers and fed her imagination. After discovering a love for writing in English class at the age of eight, she continued to write in secret. It was not until much later in life that Loraine turned what she thought was a hobby, and something fun to do, into her first completed novel.

At the moment, her biggest challenge is bringing the owner of Plenty Good Farms in line with the others. The fact that the old curmudgeon of an owner, Samuel Morgan, has brought his nephew in to run things gives her hope. Surely, the younger Morgan will be more amenable to her progressive ideas.

When Chloe first presents her plan the Morgan men, it’s Drew who throws a monkey wrench into his uncle’s agreement to sign the necessary contract. What she doesn’t realize is that Drew’s reluctance has more to do with his uncle’s health issues, and the possibility that he won’t be able to talk the man who raised him into retiring.

When Drew is forced by the military medical team into choosing between a desk job or retirement, he shares his frustrations with Chloe and she helps him find a new purpose outside of being a full-time farmer. It also helps that their attraction is growing. Drew has definitely fallen for the independent woman, and her adorable daughter.

Will Chloe’s faith and determination help her lead Drew through his difficult decisions and bring them what they both need... a love that transcends their everyday challenges.

Drew Morgan pulled his muddy four-wheeler to a stop on the side of the road just short of the driveway leading to Plenty Good Farms. The last place he wanted to be, but where he was needed most. After nearly twelve years of active military service, he understood duty. Responsibility.

It wasn’t like the military was giving him an assignment any time soon. If ever.

He killed the engine, slid from behind the wheel, and walked around for a few minutes, working the kinks out of his bum leg and stretching his back. It wouldn’t do to arrive on his uncle’s porch with a limp.

The stubborn old coot would likely brand him injured and useless, and continue to insist he could manage on his own.

Drew knew better. Thanks to a letter from Doc Taylor, he’d been apprised of Sam’s failing health. As badly as Drew wanted to stay close to Fort Hood in hopes of haranguing them into letting him go back to work, he couldn’t very well desert the man who’d raised him from the age of ten.

C’mon, Andrew, grow a pair!

His uncle’s familiar admonishment echoed in Drew’s ears. Samuel Morgan was—if nothing else—an opinionated and cranky curmudgeon who liked nothing better than to goad people into doing what he wanted them to do.

Still, Drew loved the set-in-his-ways old man with all his heart. So much so, he’d accepted his mandatory three-month medical leave without so much as an argument. Then, he’d set out on the eighteen-hour drive from the base to the farming town of Plentiful, California in order to check on Sam for himself.

No sense putting off the inevitable any longer. Drew hopped back into the car and turned up the long, winding driveway. Parking at the rear of the century-old farmhouse, Drew took the steps two at a time, the reward for his exuberance a shooting pain that ran from behind his knee cap, up the back of his thigh, and ended in his hip. With the pain came the flash of memory he couldn’t quite escape, the loud explosion of an IED, flames shooting into the air, jagged shards of shrapnel flying everywhere.

He stopped at the door and sucked in a breath before turning the knob and stepping into the warm and welcoming kitchen.

“About time you got here, Andrew,” Sam groused from his seat at the table. He cradled an all-too-familiar cup of coffee in his sun-tanned grasp.

The first thing Drew noticed was the way Sam’s hands trembled where he held the ceramic mug. “The road was wet,” Drew countered. “I couldn’t go top speed all the way.”

Sam’s faded gray gaze narrowed in his direction. “No doubt you’ve lost all the driving skills I taught you as a teenager.”

“After maneuvering caravans of military vehicles for a dozen years, handling a lightweight four-wheel drive takes a bit of practice.”

“Yeah, well, you’re home now. You’ll catch on once you’re back on the tractor and pulling a wagon load of fresh-picked ‘cados.”

Avocado Toast by Nancy Fraser is the first book in the ‘Orchard Brides’ series, and centers around wounded military man Andrew (Drew) Morgan, who has reluctantly returned to his uncle’s beloved avocado farm to convalesce. He never expects that his future will be completely changed by single-mother Chloe Taylor and her enchanting young daughter, even though Chloe’s modern marketing techniques threaten to disrupt the lives of the stubbornly traditional orchard owners, such as Drew’s uncle.

 

This sweet Christian romance evokes the challenging yet rewarding life of a commercial farmer, including a sobering glimpse of the challenges of balancing climate, the market, and survival. The relationships between Drew, his uncle, Chloe, and her daughter Jessi are nicely portrayed, and I was invested in their journey together. For me, the pacing is a little uneven, and there’s a mystic element that doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the story, but this is still an entertaining light read that reminds one of the importance of faith, trust, and family

Poem no. 7: Scary, Isn’t It?

I often think about how scary it is;

one minute you’re fine and the next

you’re yearning for a girl you’ve only just met. And the mere thought of her is enough to give you violent butterflies.

The more you get to know her

the more she becomes everything you think about.

The more you know her the funnier and prettier she becomes until the butterflies aren’t

only reserved for when she’s near;

they’re there forevermore.

I often think about how scary it is;

How is it that a singular person has that much of an effect on you?

It’s scary because you know that you’re giving her the power to break your heart if she so chooses.

Polly crept softly downstairs and into the vaulted kitchen. In the window behind the double sink, her mom’s stained-glass butterfly reflected a glint of moonlight. Her gaze darted from the window to the sliding glass doors across the room, behind a small round oak table. A greasy takeout box and two plates of chicken bones on the counter—her mom’s only half-eaten—glistened in the faint light. She paused next to the table, gripped the padded back of a dining chair, and leaned toward the glass door. She peered out, across the backyard and into the orchard.

 

A large beacon of light flickered in the trees. It moved, as if floating. No, not floating—walking. The intense glow, marked by dark strips of trunk and branch, moved at a measured pace. She squinted, trying to make out an outline of . . . whatever it was that meandered through the trees.

 

It’s an animal. It has to be!

 

She lifted the latch on the sliding glass door and gently opened it. Chilly night air rushed in, smelling of ozone and the earth. Her flannel nightgown billowed in the breeze. She placed a bare foot on the smooth concrete of the patio. The cold was sharp and shot straight through Polly, causing her to gasp, but she forced herself to keep moving. She stepped all the way out and slid the door back into place, almost closing it but not quite.

 

The roving light in the orchard had grown larger. It was weaving between the dark rows of trees in the distance. The undulating pace of it . . . it wasn’t human. Whatever it was, it was moving—walking, she thought, but not on two legs.

 

Polly put one foot in front of the other, compelled by her need to know. She crossed the backyard, reaching the bumpy bare earth of the orchard floor. She steadied herself against a tree trunk as adrenaline raced through her veins. She leaned into the tree, hoping to conceal her figure without losing sight of the creature, whatever it was.

 

She waited, watching in both awe and terror as the glowing animal came closer. The creature made no sound at all. Polly watched, eyes trained on the glow itself, until finally she could make out a shape—a long, muscular torso flexed above four knobby legs. Pointed ears flickered.

 

It’s a horse! A white mare! Oh my god, she’s so bright.

 

The horse turned its head, flashing a spiraled horn—unmistakable against the dark branches around them.

 

NO WAY!

 

“Polly? Are you out there?” she heard her mom call. She turned to see her mom’s silhouette standing in the kitchen. Her mom flicked on a light, spilling yellow across the yard. Polly whipped around to see the unicorn again, but the orchard had grown dark, full of silent indigo trees.

 

The glowing animal was gone.

The Electric Girl by Christine Hart centers around Polly Michaels as she deals with the specter of her mother’s cancer. If her mother dies, the young girl will be an orphan. A series of odd occurrences, including Polly’s sighting of a unicorn plus a vicious bear attack in the town, mark a potentially world-changing struggle that Polly and her friends may play a key role in, but her primary goal is helping her mother. Little does she realize that the two challenges may be connected.

 

 

This young adult fantasy story explores the bonds of friendship as well as the concept of extra-terrestrial lifeforms and alternate realities. There are many imaginative elements that should prompt curiosity and exploration of the concept of lifeforms other than those humans share the world with. The action is a bit uneven to me and I was a little disappointed in some of the choices made that will have negative effects on others, but overall this is a fun, thought-provoking tale.
