Kamen walked to the bathroom and splashed some cold water on his face. Then he turned on the lights and picked up one of the ancient tomes he had been studying in hopes of finding a solution to any of his many daunting problems. And, failing that, he was searching for spells, both offensive and defensive—anything that would help protect the Nightwalkers when Apep’s next attack took place.
 

He had been reading for several hours when, suddenly, something on a papyrus scroll jumped out at him—hieroglyphs of the figure of a god using some kind of power to divide a group of twelve beings into two halves.

Kamen knew instantly that the god was Apep and that he had used his power to sunder the Nightwalker nation into two. Then it showed that the god had died as a result of the curse. This was new information. He felt an emotion akin to excitement—if a man as jaded as he was could even feel excitement and hope any longer. If the god could die from the curse, then that meant he could die, period. That his mortal body was fragile enough to be destroyed. The question was, how did they go about destroying that mortal body when they hadn’t even gotten close to doing so in spite of using strength and manmade weapons against him? He’d been shot directly in the heart and it hadn’t even made him blink. If that couldn’t kill him, then what could?

But the next hieroglyphs were even more important. They showed the god resurrecting, enslaving people, using his power to kill . . . and then they showed the twelve beings coming together to fight the god. Eventually destroying him.

Did that mean what he thought it meant? That if all twelve nations of Nightwalkers got together they could fight this god? If that were the case then it would be an impossible task. Not only because they couldn’t see one another, but because the twelfth nation, the Wraiths, were enemies to all the other Nightwalkers. True, there had been an unspoken truce of sorts these past decades, more a case of neither making any moves against the other. But every Nightwalker on this side of the faction, known now as the Second Faction, knew the Wraiths were cold-blooded and would just as soon touch you with their instantly fatal deathtouch as not. The First Faction was lucky they knew nothing of the Wraiths. They made Nightwalker blood run cold.

But what if the Wraiths could be made to come to the table? Could be made to understand that it was best for all of them if they worked cooperatively against the god Apep? Surely they had just as much to lose.

But the glyphs showed no explanation as to how the twelve were able to coordinate an attack against the god. Hieroglyphs were notoriously open to interpretation and could only get across the most rudimentary of ideas. It wasn’t as though you could glean great philosophical discussions from them.

He gingerly touched the aged papyrus. Simple they may be, those few succinct images were the closest they had gotten to some kind of history or explanation or suggestion as to how to end all of this. He put a marker in the page and continued on in search of more, but he went through all the other scrolls and found no hint of further explanation.

Twelve nations, working together.

It was worth considering at least. And it wasn’t his place to agree or disagree with the concept. His only role was to report what he learned.

And so when dusk fell, that was what he would do.

Excerpt 

My plane touches down in Vegas at eleven a.m. and within minutes I’ve got us in a limousine bound for the Atlantis. It’s the hottest casino on The Strip right now and it’s owned by my college roommate and close friend Sebastian Caine.

Chloe is curled up next to me on the seat, her head resting on my shoulder and her fingers entwined with mine while her best friend, Tori, is seated across from us, chattering nonstop about all the things that she and Chloe need to do before the wedding. The list is growing by the second, getting more and more complicated. Chloe doesn’t seem upset by it, though. Instead, she’s nodding along with everything Tori says, even laughing every once in a while at a particularly outrageous suggestion.

She sounds happy. She is happy, and I’m so, so grateful. There’s nothing I want more in the world than to make this woman as happy as she makes me.

And I am happy. Ecstatic, really. How could I be anything less when the woman I love more than my own life has agreed to be my wife? We’re getting married. Today. And then she’ll be mine, forever.

And still, I can’t relax. Can’t let myself enjoy this moment when something just doesn’t feel right. I try to tell myself it’s only the agony of the last week I spent without her—and the pain of the weeks before that as we struggled to come to grips with the mess that is our tangled pasts. “I’m sorry,” she whispers. “She’s just really excited. She’ll calm down soon. I promise.”

“She’s not bothering me at all,” I answer truthfully. “I’m glad she’s here with you.” I turn my head, catch her next kiss on my mouth instead of my cheek.

I mean it to be just a quick brush of lips against lips, but she gasps at the first touch of my mouth to hers. Her lips open like a flower and then I’m sinking into the softness, into the sweetness, that is Chloe Girard-soon-to-be-Frost. Nothing has ever felt better.

She tastes like dark honey.

Like sweet wine.

Like a home I never had a clue I was missing before I met her.

The thought steadies me even as it turns me on. Bringing my hand to her hair, I tangle my fingers in her wild strawberry curls. She gasps again at the soft tug, then opens to me fully, her lips and tongue and mouth mine for the taking.

Exposed by Tracy Wolff is part of the ‘Ethan Wolfe’ series but is also connected to the world explored in the ‘Play Me’ series.  Ethan has finally worked through some of his issues enough to convince Chloe that, despite all of their complicated history, they do indeed belong together for the rest of their lives.  Their searingly incandescent and carnal connection is destined to continue to weather significant challenges, but if they can convince one another to trust that what they have is real, and to give each other unconditional support, they can get past whatever the world throws at them…or can they?

This wickedly sensual contemporary romance novella is part of a series that I have not read, yet I had no trouble making a connection with the characters and getting a feel for the challenges they have had to overcome to reach this point.  I was shocked and appalled to read about Chloe’s history and the role Ethan and his family have played in damaging her psyche and a little concerned about the degree of recovery she has achieved and whether her self-image is sufficiently bolstered, but I liked that she continued to progress throughout the story and even began challenging the very dominant and forceful Ethan.  There are certain aspects of this story that are uncomfortable to me, as one of my personal issues is the dichotomy between the infliction of a multiplicity of bruises as “marks of ownership” and the willingness to accept them as a compliment…although I have been informed that there are definitely people who savor this condition. 

This story contains a significant amount of angst and emotionalism, not to mention frequent and intense intimate encounters, but overall there is a nice progression aided by delightful interludes with Chloe’s best friend, Tori.  The unexpected twists add to the intense and atmospheric relationship and make this a mesmerizing and exciting story that will make one breathless for multiple reasons, and I will be curious to see how matters continue to unfold, especially since Tori also deserves to get her own time in the spotlight.

Stephen gazed at the woman next to him. Watched another bite of chocolate mousse slip slowly between her full, pink lips. Her tongue slipped out to lick what was left and he imagined doing the same. Just watching her eat made him sweat.

Even more beautiful than he remembered, and he had a damn good memory. Golden hair tumbled seductively in waves around her shoulders. He imagined how it would feel sliding over his skin. Wearing little makeup if any, the porcelain skin of her cheeks glowed in the soft light. She wore no jewelry other than tiny diamond studs in her delicate earlobes. Another place he imagined his mouth.

He’d watched her before, saw her start into the bar, then stop, and he’d felt a strange twinge in his gut, afraid she might turn around and run. He might have been wrong before about the nervous act and he didn’t like being wrong. Being wrong meant you lost, something he hated even more. He liked easy; she was anything but. Though staring into Hannah’s eyes over candlelight, he forgot what he liked. Forgot damn near everything.

Usually by this point in the evening he was more than ready to move things along. Either they were going to bed, or they weren’t and in that case he was done talking and ready to go home. Have a drink. Be alone.

The bill paid, the dessert now gone, he couldn’t put it off any longer. They rose, passing mostly empty tables, and walked outside.

The valet had already brought his car up, but not hers. Good. He wanted more time. When Hannah passed the guy her ticket, Stephen intercepted, reaching around for the keys. “I’ll take those.”
“Yes, sir.” The young valet pointed to her car a short distance away.

They walked in silence, and stopped beside it. It was odd ending a date this way, standing outside a car. It usually ended with him slipping out of a woman’s bed mildly rested and covered with guilt.
“I had a good time tonight,” she said, flicking her eyes up at him, then away. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Did I pass the test? Can I have your number now?”

No answer. Second time today she’d refused him and still, he ached to arch her back, taste that sweet mouth, nip his way across her cheek and down her throat. “How do you feel about parties?”

“Um . . .” Her eyes were everywhere but on him, teeth pressing into that bottom lip he was dying to suck into his own. “I’m not really into parties.”

“I think you’ll like this one.”

She held out her hand for her keys. “No, but thank you.”

“Hmm. The birthday girl will be very disappointed. If I don’t make an appearance she’ll get her feelings hurt. I’d hate to do that.” 

Something flashed in her eyes at the mention of another woman. So she wasn’t totally uninterested. Good.

“Why can’t you go by yourself?”

“I don’t want to go by myself. I want to go with you.”

“Well, if she really wants you to come to her party, she probably won’t be very happy about you bringing a friend.”

“No, she’d love me to bring a friend. Definitely the more-the-merrier type.”

“I don’t think so.” Hannah turned to her car, remembered he still had her keys and turned back with her hand out.

“You sure? Turning five is a pretty big deal.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Five?”

“Yes. My niece. Gracie.” He grinned, enjoying her shock. “It’s at my brother’s tomorrow. Five o’clock. Give me your address and I’ll pick you up.”

Her eyes met his and he waited. When the wind blew a long strand of hair across her face, they both reached for it. The second their fingers touched, she dropped her hand and eased back a tiny step, putting space between him that he didn’t like.

BRING ON THE HEAT

People sometimes wonder where we get inspiration for stories. Usually it’s hard to pinpoint the exact thing that sparked an idea. I usually have to think backwards after the story has been written to try and remember what the original inspiration was.

My first historical, Twilight Ecstasy (note from ELF, this is under her Colleen Quinn name), was inspired by an old village located in the Wharton State Forest of New Jersey. If you’ve never been to the pinelands, it is well worth the trip. You would never know you were New Jersey when surrounded by miles of silent forests, rushing rivers, and sapphire lakes. Batsto mansion is a restored manor house built by the owners of the surrounding Ironworks. The site dates back to the Revolutionary war, and is now a protected site owned by the state. The mansion is huge, 32 rooms and a tower overlooking Batsto Lake. It’s one of those places where you see ghosts everywhere, haunting the mansion, working in the restored village, or carrying grain from the Gristmill.

I was a huge fan of Kathleen Woodiwiss, author of The Flame and the Flower. I was also a Sherlock Holmes devotee, thanks to my best friend who started passing me the books in Catholic school when we were supposed to be reading English 101. The Hound of the Baskervilles (Illustrated) was one of my favorite stories. Walking through the trails, taking pictures of the house and the property, I could see my heroine arriving at this secluded place as an Irish immigrant, frightened by the strange goings on in the woods while fascinated by her attraction to her handsome employer. It was a lot of fun to combine my favorite elements of mystery and romance while indulging in history of this beautiful place.

Other stories came from different places. I saw an old movie where Barbara Stanwyck set up Henry Fonda as a mark so her father could take advantage of him in a poker game. Of course she fell in love with him, which messed up everything. Henry Fonda was presumed to be wealthy, and it occurred to me it might be funny if it turned out he wasn’t really rich. That was the inspiration for Unveiled (note from ELF, also under the Colleen Quinn moniker), a historical based on the premise: what happens if two people marry for money, and neither one has any?

Bring on the Heat: The Boys of Summer is my first contemporary romance. The inspiration came from watching a baseball game in the sweltering August heat. I had grown to love the sport thanks to my daughter, who patiently taught me all of the nomenclature and how the game worked. But my mind wandered as I admired the strikingly handsome pitcher, and wondered what would happen if he met a girl he assumed was an heiress, but was actually the girl next door? Could he get past his expectations of marrying someone who was a model or an actress, once he realized he was in love with an ordinary woman?

I had a great time writing Bring on the Heat: The Boys of Summer! The baseball venue is loads of fun, and you get to work with a whole team of hot guys! Life doesn’t get much better.
