EXCERPT

She turned back to the stove to hide her blush.

“I take it you like it?”

“Oh, yeah. I like it.” There was a gravelly undertone to the words.

Her cheeks burned. “Could you hand me the wooden spoon on the wall peg there?”

He leaned over her and reached for the wooden spoon. He paused, the tip of his nose grazing her hair.

“Mmm. Your hair smells delicious.”

She gnawed her lower lip as her heart skipped a beat. “Thanks.” She turned to face him, and the embers of his evident desire radiated like a power plant.

“Bloody hell, Madelyn. I’m sorry. Feel free to punch me.”

She furrowed her brow. “For what?”

“This.”

He cupped her face in his hands and kissed her full on the mouth. She gasped as her insides liquified. Jeez… Forget decent kisser. Forget experienced. This guy was a mouth sensei. She clutched his shirt and pulled him closer. He smiled against her mouth and opened her lips

with his tongue, touching the tip to hers. She melted. His lips soothed, scrubbing away the scars of the past. She hadn’t been kissed in almost two years.

He drew her in close and kissed her like his soul was on fire. She moaned, wrapped her ankle around his and wound her arms around his neck as her body ignited. She hadn’t planned on skipping dinner and going straight to dessert, but by God, they were headed there.

My review:

 3.75 out of 5 stars

Type Dirty to Me by Roxanne D. Howard follows recently divorced Madelyn as she makes a new start in life, including opening a bookstore/coffee café, complicated by a famous neighbor who is interested in her but also going through his own trials post-divorce, as well an online friend who is pushing for more intimacy than she’s ready for. Then there are those threats she’s receiving…

This adult contemporary romance story has an intriguing twist as the heroine grapples with her attraction to both her online friend and her charismatic neighbor. This is a great story about second chances and the complications that can accompany them. The mystery/suspense element is a little forced and predictable to me, and I’d like to know these folks a little more in-depth, but I liked watching the relationship evolve between the main characters and the way he is so supportive of her hard work and her dream even as he coaxes her to own her sensuality and to relax occasionally.

When You Close Your Eyes by Roxanne D. Howard (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

ADULT title

Dreams are the perfect shelter for fantasies, safe havens to step inside without changing our daily lives. For Lark Braithwaite, all that is about to change. During the last six months, Lark has dreamt of a mysterious Irish lover who knows what she wants and gives her exactly what she needs. In her waking life in busy London, things aren't as ideal as her long-term relationship with her controlling fiancé Charles has hit a dry spell.

When Lark is called home to Oregon for her father's funeral, she comes face to face with the demons from her past, but she never expects to meet her dream lover in the flesh. Niall O'Hagan steps straight out of her fantasies and into her life, and the powerful connection they share rocks her foundation. Although she's dealing with the bitterness of her fiancé's betrayal and his jealousy, Niall soon stirs Lark's awareness of her superficial existence and reawakens her sexuality....and her soul.

From PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY:
"Howard (The Longer They Last) explores the concept of fated love in this skillfully woven contemporary erotic romance. Lark Braithwaite, an American in London, is living with her British fiancé, Charles Chase, when she starts dreaming of a sexy mystery man with an Irish brogue. After Lark gets word that her estranged father has died and she returns to her Oregon hometown for the funeral, she meets the dream man in the flesh: he's her parents' widowed lawyer, Niall O'Hagan. Lark quickly falls in love with Niall, struggling to decide whether she should follow her heart or the commitment she's made to her fiancé-a decision that gets easier when Charles shows his true and ugly colors... Explicit sex scenes crackle with heat, and Howard's characters invite readers to come in and get lost on the pages with them as the plot hurtles toward a shocking, but not unbelievable, climax involving Lark's father's past and her future. Erotic romance fans will devour Howard's suspenseful and heart-filled story."

Excerpt

If the kiss had stayed careful and guarded, she might have continued to question it. But the blindfold disappeared. She’d fallen asleep. Her eyes flew open, and he was there. Oh, my God. He was there! Heated eyes watched her. Rakish dark hair fell over his forehead as he breathed hard, and the morning sun lit up the world behind him. She shuddered and took a deep breath to speak, but his hands moved to cup her face. He held still and closed his eyes as his lips took her mouth. Right then and there, she knew with crystal clarity this was real. This was the weight of a real man on top of her, clothed. He smelled citrusy and freshly laundered. What in the hell is this?

How did he get here? He was only her dream lover.

Or was he?

Confused beyond all comprehension, Lark didn’t have any time to contemplate a single thing. His lips delivered a breath-stealing, soul-shattering kiss, and then they were all over each other. This, ah, this she knew. Lark hooked her ankle over his, put a hand on his shoulder, and tried to rid him of his jacket as she drew him closer. She fisted his hair as he devoured her mouth. He tasted the same as her dream lover, and she put her tongue in his mouth to savor more of his tangy sweetness. They both made noises they never had in her dreams, breathy gasps and blasts of air as their mouths met and separated as they sought new angles and depths to their passion.

He made a disgruntled sound as he tried to get more comfortable in the cradle of her hips over the hindrance of clothes. This wasn’t a dream. He nibbled on her lower lip as she opened her mouth to tell him to stop, but then he carried her away in the undercurrent of his large, warm hands, which caressed the skin of her stomach beneath her hoodie and T-shirt. She continued to accept his kisses but pawed her zipped-up sweat jacket. Okay, so she was still clothed. He was rock hard against her, and he ground his hips into her. A disbelieving grunt escaped his lips. Lark shivered at the jolt that went through her.

“Wh— Mmm. Whoa. Stop,” She managed against his mouth. She furrowed her eyebrows and scrutinized him as he breathed in and out. He braced himself on the weight of his hands above her, his bright green eyes bearing into hers. His face was the face of her dreams—the sensual bowed lips and cleft chin, the built body, and the thick hair. His hair… She blinked. His hair was cut at the nape and styled for a day at work. She glanced at his clothes.

“Um, why are you wearing a suit and tie this time?” She squinted against the sunlight. Please, God, let this be a dream. He moved his head and put her in shade.

His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
It had grown dark, and the lampposts in the parking lot were lit. She had a little pep in her step as she walked to the ER doors, but she stopped and didn’t go in. He was there, hands on his duty belt as he talked with a patient near the security desk. Griffith emitted shock waves of sex appeal, even from where she stood.
Oh, hell no.
She’d never be able to walk past him after what she’d done the other night. She reddened. Not like he would even know about her stupid fantasies, but she would. She’d half forgotten he would be on graves with her, too wrapped up in the exhilaration of getting into medical school and…other activities.
Evasive maneuvering seemed the best way to go, so she sidestepped and made her way around to the back employee entrance leading into the ER. She smiled to herself over the minor victory, and pushed against the handle to go in, but it didn’t budge.
“You’ve uh, got to pull it.”
She turned around, and there he stood, dangling a black Maglite in his hand. She reigned in the growl that wanted to surface. “I’m sorry?”
“The door. You need to yank the handle toward you, not push it. There’s a sign.”
Sonnet froze, and eyed the PULL sticker she’d been oblivious to, right above said handle.
“Of course,” she murmured. “Figures.” Even though he must think her an imbecile, she raised her chin with defiance and muttered her thanks as she tugged on the door. It didn’t move.
“Use your badge,” he said. “It’s a security measure so no unauthorized personnel get in.” She glanced at him. He crossed his arms, and his lips fought a losing battle to twitch upward.
Sonnet shook her head, flustered, and rooted around her purse for her work badge. “Look, I realize you think I’m a total moron here, but it’s my first night on the floor, my car had trouble starting earlier, and my nerves are all shot to hell. So, I’d appreciate it if you, your ridiculously stacked chest, and all your muscles wouldn’t judge me, okay? I’m nervous enough as it is. We’re not all perfect.” She held her badge to the RFID reader. The second the green light went on, he beat her to the handle and held the door open for her.
She didn’t see a wedding ring on his left hand. Hmm.
He smirked. “Good to know you like my muscles.” He raised his eyebrows as she clipped past him.
“Shut it, Rambo.”
My review:
3.75 out of 5 stars
Sonnet Coupled by Roxanne D. Howard features Sonnet Mendoza, a young nurse with very precise career goals, who encounters temptation personified in the sexy security guard at her new job, Griffith Parker. He, too, has a definite career path that he’s determined to follow. The chemistry between them may make a mockery of their plans, if they give in to their attraction. Maybe it’s time to reconsider what the future looks like…or is it?
This contemporary new adult romance features a delightful slow burn that ratchets up the heat and gives glimpses of the sacrifice and dedication required to serve in two different capacities—the medical field and police force. I enjoyed the Argentinian connection and the mouthwatering descriptions of some of the ethnic dishes and I can only admire the determination and grit that both characters display.
There were a few inconsistencies that bugged me (especially the blithe disregard of the need for protection at the onset of the intimate relationship), I wasn’t quite convinced about one person’s about-face, and I thought the pace was a little uneven, especially at the end when it seemed events were a bit compressed. Those who have triggers should be aware that there is a scene that may be a bit uncomfortable to read.
Despite all of this, I enjoyed watching these two dance around their attraction and draw each other out of their respective shells. I love that there is both passion and cherishing in this romantic tale and I hope we get a chance to see these two as they continue their lives together.
