No Cowboys No Angels by Petie McCarty (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by
Petie McCarty

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A cozy romantic mystery with suspense, Book 1 from The Mystery Angel Romances series. An angel hidden in every book . . . it's up to the reader to figure out who.

In No Cowboys No Angels, Kellen Brand's inheritance turns out to be a whopper—one dilapidated farm in West Virginia and one guardian angel!

Since Kellen is convinced no sane woman would choose to live in Riverside, she vows to sell her farm and quick. Her handsome neighbor Luke Kenyon must block the farm sale or risk exposure of his family's secrets. While Kellen has located one potential buyer, she faces a town full of objectors. Someone is trying to frighten her off, and Luke is forced to step in and rescue her more than once.

Unfortunately, Kellen can't seem to stay out of trouble. She stumbles onto a clandestine hazardous-waste-dumping operation next to her farm, and she prays Luke has one more rescue up his sleeve. It's her only hope of staying alive.

Unless her mother really did leave her a guardian angel . . .

Slowing near the tree line to get her bearings, Kellen pulled over at a spot where the bank jutted out over the water. She climbed out of the car and scanned the shoreline. To her right, the slope flattened out and provided easy access to the water. The Tanawoc River maintained a good current, sending soggy leaves and debris speeding past in its flow. Grassy hills rolled back from the opposite riverbank, and she wondered if the Clandestine Mining Company still owned all that property.

A familiar aroma wafted up from the river, a combination of humus, plant material, microscopic plankton, and a touch of fish. Unable to stop the smile slowly stretching across her face, she untied her sneakers, rolled up her jeans, and slipped into the icy water. She immediately gasped and felt her smile deepen to a grin. She remained in the soothing current for a long time, taking in her surroundings as she watched trout dart in and around the submerged rocks to grab their plankton lunch.

A horse whickered behind her, then came the telltale creak of a saddle. Too close for comfort. The back of her neck prickled. Ankle deep in the water, she couldn’t make a decent sprint for the car, and Kellen regretted her impulse to visit this deserted stretch of riverbank.

Easing around, she spied the towering silhouette of a powerfully built man astride a huge black stallion no more than ten yards away. The rider’s face lay shadowed beneath a wide-brimmed Stetson. The cowboy made an impressive and, at this moment, intimidating sight—a throwback from the frontier days of the Wild West.

The horse whickered again and sidestepped away from the edge of the embankment, forcing the cowboy to twist around to keep her in sight. She could feel his dark eyes scanning every inch of her. The intensity in his gaze raised goosebumps on her arms, and a tiny shiver vibrated up her spine. Trapped here along the edge of the river, she felt vulnerable yet strangely unafraid. Would he come any closer?

A horn blared up on the highway, and she jumped with a yelp. The big horse reared at the sound of her cry, and Kellen caught a brief glimpse of the cowboy’s dark eyes, eyes that could stare right through to a girl’s soul. She scrunched her own eyes shut and forced herself to breathe. When she opened them, the rider was gone. Had she imagined him? Another mild shiver rifled up her spine. No, the fearsome rider was definitely real.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

No Cowboys No Angels by Petie McCarty is a mystery with romantic, paranormal, and western elements. The challenges that Kellen Brand faces when she returns to the town where she experienced such privation as a child are not just the difficulty of facing her bad memories and selling the family homestead, but her attraction to her sexy neighbor, Luke, and the ties and relationships that seem to pick up right where they left off twenty years ago. When danger escalates, Kellen can only hope that the guardian angel her mother bequeathed her is still on the job.

This story is the first book in the ‘Mystery Angel Romances’ series and has quite a combination of elements. Of course I loved the sexy cowboy hero who has a little trouble smoothing over his abrupt mannerisms when dealing with the woman he sees as a big-city snob. Kellen was a little frustrating with her hot and cold mannerisms toward the town, her former classmates, and her exasperating neighbor—not to mention her incurable nosiness and propensity for jumping to conclusions—but she does have redeeming qualities.

There are several very dramatic scenes that keep the tension escalating and poignant issues that both main characters are dealing with that give the story depth and emotion. Certain details are inconsistent to me, such as whether a cabin has an attic, whether a benefactor would donate expensive equipment but be obtuse to the lack of lunches for the kids, or even how a certain bad guy ended up in the right place at the right time, but that didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the tale. Overall, this is a fun and romantic story that leaves one with a warm fuzzy feeling and reminds us of how important faith can be.

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance/Paranormal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Healed from her own loss, Juliana Hopkins wants nothing more than to mend reclusive artist Aidan Byrne’s heart, and help close a chapter in his life that has haunted him for over twenty years. Risking their newfound love, Juliana is determined to release the ghosts he can’t let go.
Aidan has been in love with Juliana since the first moment he saw her, but if she can’t leave the tragedies of his past alone, he won’t be able to make a life with her.
She offers him a love he never dared to want, but loving her could rip open all the old wounds he’d never been able to heal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Aidan stared at her, only inches away from him in the tiny bathroom. The bloodied cotton ball tight in her grip, she’d broken down into heavy sobs. He wasn’t sure how to handle it. Weeping women weren’t his specialty. Hell, women in general weren’t his specialty, and now he felt completely at a loss on how to comfort her.

He’d sensed her earlier mood, when their eyes had locked in the mirror. At that moment, restless awareness turned into a new sort of tension. She’d been so close to him that he could smell the clean fragrance of her shampoo and feel her warm, tea scented breath on his neck. Fighting a similar attraction, he understood why she’d resorted to anger. He would’ve done the same thing in her shoes. Anger he could handle. Tears? That was a different story.

Quickly he grabbed a few sheets of Kleenex from the box on the back of the toilet and handed them to her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you cry. Really, it doesn’t hurt,” he said softly.

Juliana wiped the tissue across her eyes and didn’t look at him. “It’s not that,” she replied with a catch in her voice. “It’s the stupidity of you driving out there. Crazy and irresponsible. You should’ve gotten a lot more than a dumb little scratch on your face. You could’ve been killed, and you could’ve killed Fred.”

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

The Storm Within by Cerian Hebert is an adult contemporary romance with a hint of paranormal that is part of the ‘Soul Mate Tree’ series. Tragically widowed Juliana Hopkins slowly tries to rebuild her life, but doesn’t anticipate the changes caused by her grumpy and reclusive neighbor, Aidan Byrne. Aidan has walled himself off from emotions due to his own dark past, but a little judicious interference by a family legend forces him to reevaluate his life.

This story is an excellent addition to the collection of stories centering around a multidimensional matchmaking tree. The poignant background of each character made me invested in the story and anxious that each get a happier future, and of course, the charming Fred added a nice canine element. I hoped for a more definitive answer to Aidan’s dilemma but perhaps there is a sequel in the works. I wasn’t quite sure I liked the idea of continuing to investigate in the face of such anguished opposition, despite the good intentions, so one has to hope the Soul Mate Tree is as omniscient as usual! The story was an entertaining quick read and I will be on the lookout for more of this author’s works.

Soul Song by Mikea Howard (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

by Mikea Howard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Fantasy/paranormal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Dottie thought she had it all: a successful singing career, a handsome fiancé, and a starlet’s wardrobe. Sudden betrayal brought it all crashing down around her. Those she trusted most played her as nothing more than a pawn. One misstep while fleeing the scene trapped her in another world alone, save a mysterious visitor.

Guatimozin, an eagle shifter, has spent ages assisting people through the realm between life and death, leading them to join loved ones on either side. No one had ever made him want anything for himself until he discovered this city girl.
Forces plot against them and time is short. Soon, their chance for a happily ever after will be too late.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Dottie wiped the tears from her face. Damn him, and damn his floosy too. She’d do what her mother constantly threatened her stepdad with, and remove his cock to wear it proudly on a chain around her neck.
I jus’ gotta find a way out of this kooky forest first.
Making her way back onto her feet, she dusted off her dress in a mindless motion. The fabric passed beneath her strokes smooth and dirt free. She studied the once vibrant red dress she’d worn on stage. The satin now appeared drab and colorless. Her bare feet peeked from beneath its hem, as clean as the moment she’d dabbed them dry from her bath. The blind sprint from her dressing room, across town, and up the hill, should have left them covered in filth.
In exasperation, she threw her arms in the air. “Swell. I mus’ be dead and I’m . . .”
She moved away from the tree to scrutinize her surroundings. As much as Dottie hoped she’d end up in heaven, her mother always insisted that, as a willful child trying to pass as something she wasn’t, her final destination would be a bit further down.
The sensation of electricity passing through the air made every hair stand on end as a matter-of-fact reply came from behind. “No, you aren’t dead, but you’re not exactly alive either. You’re in a realm known as the in-between.”
Spinning around, Dottie came face to face with a stranger. Like the tree, he appeared in color, only he wasn’t pink and purple. Instead, a tall man with reddish tan skin, swirling silver eyes, and waist length striking black hair, stared at her as though regarding a ghost. Thick muscular arms crossed over his chest as his shocked expression ease into a slow smirk, highlighting the defined beak-like nose, high cheekbones, and strong chin framing his mouth.
Nervously licking her lips, she couldn’t help but muse, Di Mi. Well hello, sailor.
Writing under Mikea Howard, we are actually Mindy Howard and Kelly Smith, sisters-in-law who share a love for romance, usually paranormal. We have spent the last several years reading and sharing books as well as authors, often making comments about how we'd love to write our own when we ran out of things to read.
While based on our TBR piles, we have not run out of reading material, yet we decided to write when the muse hit Kelly with a dystopian diesel world and an opening scene with the heroine running out into the woods. Mindy then saw her hero step in, and The Diesel War series was born.
Mindy is an IT professional at a telecom company. She is married to a musician and teacher, who also happens to be Kelly's brother. She has one adult son and is living out west.
Kelly is a Registered Nurse working in maternal-fetal medicine. She has a great husband, who happens to be Mindy's husband's best friend. She has one son in high school, one daughter in middle school, and is living on the east coast.
My review:
3.5 out of 5 stars
Soul Song by Mikea Howard is an adult dystopic paranormal romance that is part of the ‘Soul Mate Tree’ series. Singer Dorothea (Dottie) flees from her fiance’s betrayal and inexplicably ends up in an odd land sheltered by an unusual tree. Her unexpected connection to Guatimozin, an eagle shifter in service to the horned god who she meets at the tree, gives her hope that her life is going to change for the better, but she has to figure out why she’s being hunted and how to survive long enough to explore a relationship with the sexy shifter.
This story is an unusual mixture of genres as humans and shifters sometimes coexist in various enclaves formed from remnants of the States. I think there is a lot of backstory that is alluded to and I am not sure whether there are other stories connected to this particular tale that go into more detail.
I like the diversity present, both in terms of race and types of shifters, and I was delighted to get a peek into the nature of the tree. The quaint colloquialisms used by the heroine and some of those she interacts with were interesting and I am entertained by the idea of using “applesauce” as a more benign epithet, lol. I didn’t quite grasp the bad guys’ motivations, except for greed, nor understand how society functioned in this universe or even what brought it to this point. Hopefully, there will be a longer version of the story that goes into more detail and will showcase even more creativity from this imaginative writing duo.
Love at the Electric by Jenn Hughes (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
by
Jenn Hughes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Walking wildfire Sam Owens gets Lillian hot in all the right ways, but there's more to the software CEO than just a pretty face. And a great body. And… Oh, right. He’s the enemy, according to the contract she signed with his rival. So when they secretly meet up for movies at The Electric, Lillian can't get too involved with Sam. She could lose her job. Her reputation. And her heart.
Sam is in love with his company, his image, his video games, and his ability to avoid commitment--at least until he levels up with attorney Lillian Walker. With her love of campy horror flicks and a body that makes him want to howl like a cartoon wolf, Sam’s found his leading lady. Too bad getting close to Lillian means tangling with her boss, a supervillain in the making.
In the nights leading up to Christmas, movies at The Electric mean more than just mutant toads and cannibal fruitcakes. Between shenanigans with old flames and an arch nemesis out to destroy any future they might have, Sam and Lillian learn the hard way that falling in love isn’t as easy as it looks on screen. When the past gets in the way of a perfect “the end,” there’s really only one solution--if werewolf Santas can bring them together, zombie ex-girlfriends can keep them together.
After all, anything’s possible at The Electric.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

The lights dimmed, the terrible background music stopped, and the movie finally got started. Sam settled down into the soft leather chair, letting his head drop against the bulging seat back. He occasionally lolled his head to the left, stealing glances at Lillian during the bloodiest parts of the flick.

She smiled at the most inappropriate times. Laughed when the werewolf Santa tore his elves to shreds. Rolled her eyes when Santa kidnapped the Queen of England. Near the end, Sam realized he’d lost track of the plot after watching Lillian more than the film.

As the end credits streamed down the screen, she glanced over and caught him staring. “I’d give it a seven. Honestly, the Queen of England? That’s tired. And there should have been a bit more gore during the elf slaughter, don’t you think?”

Sam nodded. “Yeah, maybe a little more. At least they didn’t CGI the blood and guts. I hate it when they do that. It needs to be corn syrup and red food coloring.”

After the lights came up, Sam followed Lillian out of the auditorium, oddly anxious about saying goodnight. By the time they walked out of The Electric and into the bitterly cold night, Sam’s heart had decided to perform a thrash metal drum solo.

“I’m heading back downtown,” he said, pointing to the left.

“I’m that way,” Lillian said, nodding toward the opposite end of the street.

He knew he needed to leave, but he didn’t move. The eager thumps of his heart started playing a beat he understood. Sam didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world other than standing in the falling snow at midnight with Lillian Walker.

My review:

4.25 out of 5 stars

Love at the Electric by Jenn Hughes follows lawyer Lillian Walker, whose inexplicable urge to help out the ex who broke her heart when they were both in college leads her into an unconventional relationship that threatens both her livelihood and her heart.

This contemporary romance with comedic elements is part of the ‘Port Bristol Novel’ series and at first almost convinced me that I wasn’t quite geeky enough to appreciate it. There are a lot of “in” jokes and allusions that weave thinly-veiled gaming and sci-fi references into the story and I am sure that I missed some of them, but my love of certain well-known science fiction series came to the rescue for others.

Port Bristol itself is a character in the story as well, with its contrast between modern technology and traditional and sometimes old-fashioned treasures, as is exemplified by the theater named The Electric that plays both modern blockbusters and campy horror movies.

For me, the story started a bit slow but it built in momentum as the main characters began to let their true selves show and dared to become a bit vulnerable to each other. I think the initial premise is a bit too contrived and the interconnections between all of the characters a little too pat, but there are fantastic plays on words, fun repartee, and wonderful images (I really enjoyed Sam’s mom and her “Mom Smash” hugs as well as the thumbnail description of Sam’s partner as a “nextlevel genius with the conversational skills of a caffeinated squirrel on Ritalin combined with a cookie habit bordering on addiction”). Throw in a refrigerator that can make one feel guilty about sneaking ice cream and a personal assistant program that finds a way to keep one on one’s toes, and combine this with the lovely romance that SLOWLY builds and this was a fun and mesmerizing read with a delightfully romantic ending.

There are a few dangling threads that lead me to believe that this wonderfully quirky cast of characters will continue their adventures in another tale and I look forward to another story that will have me laughing out loud and sighing with satisfaction. Congrats to the author on a debut work that provides a breath of fresh air in its treatment of a couple of familiar tropes, can’t wait to see what new twists will show up in the sequel!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Her eyes snapped open, her vision blanketed by huge white feathers, before a giant wing shoved her back. Her arms flailed as she fell hard on her tailbone, the impact rattling up her spine and clacking her jaw shut.
Pain and awareness ripped into her, the veil of fantasy torn from her eyes as she gawked at the rail in front of her.
She was outside. In the dark. Ready to jump from her hotel balcony.
Her sharp intake of air scraped her ears, her heart kicking against her ribcage as she covered her gaping mouth with her hand. Holy shit. Did I sleepwalk? Was she really about to plummet to her death from fourteen stories high?
And did a huge bird just save her life?
Backpedaling across the concrete, the air cool against her thighs now that she’d nearly torn her dress in half, she hit the glass of the sliding balcony doors. Reaching up with a shaking hand, she clutched the handle and pulled herself haphazardly to her feet, yanking the door open and stumbling inside. She slammed it shut behind her, the glass rattling from the force of the blow as she flipped the lock closed. Retreating farther, she toppled onto the bed, staring at the night outside with growing horror.
She recounted her steps from when she’d arrived at the hotel. The elevator, the housekeeper, entering the room, sitting, crying, falling asleep, the river, the blood, the panic, the tree—
The tree.
Climbing the tree, touching its leaves, remembering . . .
A loud thump hit the balcony outside, muted by the thick glass. Her bleary eyes shot to the figure standing on the ledge and she released a cross between a sob and a shriek, then stifled her mouth with a hand.
Tall, bare-chested, his suit jacket and shirt bunched in his fist as he tossed them aside. Tattoos covered his arms, shoulders, and the base of his neck. Closer now, she discerned the pattern of inked wings, pale muscles rippling, lines and cuts he’d never worn before. His dark hair fell a little longer on top, disheveled from the wind, his face still carved with gorgeous edges, but thinner, wearier. His eyes were black holes, endless, consuming. Infinite.
Sebastian.
His knuckles rapped on the glass, the sound sending a terrified jolt into her nervous system. His eyes bore into hers, cutting through the darkness.
“Reen. Open the door.”
Reen. Her nickname rumbled from his lips, his voice still that resonant timbre she adored. God, some nights she’d pleaded to hear that sound again, just to listen to him speak one last time.
This had to be another dream. He had to be a dream. She was hallucinating.
Christ, had Phillipe spiked her drink?
“Reen.” He grasped the handle, tugged on it, his inked bicep contracting. “I know you see me.”
She couldn’t move, nailed to the bed with fear, paralyzed by disbelief. He pressed both palms flat on the glass, big hands with callused fingers, hands that had memorized every part of her body. He broke eye contact, dipping his head as he murmured, “Please, baby. Let me in.”
As if his plea granted her motor skills, Irene was suddenly on her feet, hurrying across the carpet toward him. She struggled to control her shaking hands, trembles reverberating through her entire body. It took her three tries to flip the latch, and then she backed away, recoiling, afraid of this man who looked so much like her dead lover.
He pulled the slider open in a smooth, fluid movement, the cool ocean breeze escaping into the airless hotel. Setting his sights on her, he stepped over the threshold, his presence filling the room, overwhelming her entirely. When her back hit the main door, the opportunity to flee opened up wide, but she stilled as his scent wafted into her nostrils, a blend of sandalwood and her husband.
Sebastian. Her Sebastian.
The slider closed behind him, the finality of the sound echoing through her bones, and she couldn’t run.
Not from him. Never from him.
An almost strangled sigh escaped him and he swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. A gut-wrenching pain glittered in his dark eyes while he drank her in, his gaze skittering over her from head to toe, as if reacquainting himself with his broken disaster of a wife.
Finally, he approached her in the dark, closing the distance between them, and she pressed harder against the door. If he held her, if he so much as touched her, she would be lost to him, squandering any semblance of sanity she’d managed to retain in these awful years without him.
Blistering tears flowed freely down her cheeks as he halted mere inches away, so close, so goddamn close his warmth radiated off his bare chest. He lifted a hand and she flinched, stopping him as if she’d slapped him. The pained expression on his face yanked a wretched sob from her throat, and she just couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe he stood right there in front of her.
The medal, the flag, the decorated casket, the salute . . . had it all been a lie?
His finger brushed her cheek, tentative, soft, waiting for her to strike. When she didn’t, he cupped her face in his hand, his skin still rough and callused, wiping away her tears with his thumb. She leaned into his touch, unable to resist his warmth, and he framed her face with his free hand, staring into her eyes with a need so raw it stole what little breath she had left in her burning lungs.
“My God.” He whispered the words, as if he didn’t have the strength to give them voice. “I’ve missed you.”
My review:
4.25 stars
Sweet Sacrifice by L.D. Rose is a contemporary paranormal/fantasy romance that is part of ‘The Soul Mate Tree’ series.  Widow Irene Lockard has still not gotten past the loss of her heroic SEAL husband who sacrificed his life to save the others on his team. Sebastian “Bash” Lockard is still coming to terms with his role as a newbie archangel but the requirement that he put aside the love and devotion he still has for his wife may be the one thing that he can’t comply with.
I always enjoy stories that highlight military heroes and the twist that includes archangels and an even larger war being conducted made this a fascinating tale for me. I liked the different slant on such things as the manifestation of wings and weapons, and the intense connection between the main characters is lushly romantic although I was definitely puzzled about how things would work out. There are a few things that I’m not quite satisfied with (including the explanation of how Bash is reintegrated into the role he chooses at the end) and wow, what a harsh and ascetic afterlife! Those who are squeamish should be advised that there is a bit of violence depicted with a fair amount of clinical detail. I was captured by the story immediately and loved the gradual revelations. I wasn’t quite sure about the Soul Tree’s involvement with these two except for very brief encounters and I think a lot of things were a bit glossed over but this was still a very fun and entertaining read.
