by Jessica Jefferson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
She’s the other sister…
Overshadowed by the beauty of her older sister, Lillian is better known as the other Tisdale; unremarkable and unsure how she will ever deliver on the promise of her family's name.
He’s a rake in need of reforming…
Will Colton leads a frivolous existence, embracing notoriety instead of managing his family’s fortune. Determined to forget his financial burden and his father’s growing resentment, he maintains a lifestyle dedicated to pleasure and self-indulgence. When Will is invited to the Tisdale estate for an extended holiday, he never expects to become friends with the forgettable Lillian. But when a family secret comes to light, he must choose between leaving London and protecting the honor of one woman or staying and risking the reputation of another.
Upon his return, Will finds the girl he left behind has come out of the shadows and into her own. Lillian’s finally the center of attention, and not all of it good. With his own reputation in tatters, can a reformed rake lure her out of the hands of London's bachelors and back into his own arms? Can he escape his past and reclaim her heart, or has he lost her forever?
Exclusive excerpt
Lilly swallowed, her throat thick with mortification.
He tossed his waistcoat atop the jacket, leaving nothing but his shirt separating her from the sight of his naked chest.
Then there was nothing at all.
She sat, rendered defenseless on the grass, staring at the rippled muscle of Mr. Colton’s torso. She’d only ever seen the male form in books, books that she didn’t dare read, only ever allowing herself brief glances at the pictures.
Too brief, she supposed.
Lilly certainly never imagined a man’s chest in real life would be so…
Hard.
He kneeled down in front of her and went to work, the shirt’s lawn easily shredding into strips. With every movement, the muscles in his arms and chest flexed and tightened, ruthlessly stealing her attention away from the pain.
Granted, she felt throbbing, but it was in an entirely different location than her poor shoulder and ankle.
“Here,” he said, wrapping the first strip around her neck. His knuckles brushed against her chest as he pulled the strip under her arm, searing the flesh under her gown.
“I suppose I’m being a child about this.” She started talking, nervously. She’d always been one of those that filled the void of silence with awkward chatter. “Now, my younger sister, Tamsin—she’s forever falling out of trees and breaking things. Yet she’s always been quite stoic about it. It’s a bit shaming that my younger sister can tolerate such pain much better than I.”
He shook his head. “There’s no shame about it. If I were in your shoes I’d be wailing like a newborn babe.” Mr. Colton looked at her, his blue eyes lively.
Lilly chuckled. “Oh, I’m sure that’s not true.”
He took another strip and tied it around her waist. “You, my dear, have never seen me in pain. I have no tolerance for it whatsoever. I’m a complete milksop, I positively howl at hangnails. If you don’t believe me, ask my housekeeper, Mrs. Bankert. She’s been privy to many an embarrassing display of unmanliness. She still doesn’t let me forget it.”
He was teasing her. Mr. Colton was as masculine as they came, reeking of virility and sensuality. But she appreciated his self-deprecating effort to convince her otherwise.
Taming Miss Tisdale (review) GFT
I had the pleasure of having a guest post by Jessica at this link earlier this summer.  To refresh your memories, below please find the excerpt and blurb info, giveaway link and my review.
                                Taming Miss Tisdale
By
Jessica Jefferson
BLURB:
Miss Tamsin Tisdale believes herself to be completely unsuitable for London life. After a myriad of social mishaps, and the potential ruination of her family name, she’s shipped away to her cousin’s northern estate. Only after she comes to her senses will she be welcomed home.
Marcus Winston, the Duke of Grayson, has a lackluster reputation. The last in a dying line, he’s endured a protected life—rank with privilege, encumbered by isolation. After a brief encounter with rebellion, he learns the devastating consequences of his carelessness and willingly accepts living life from inside his gilded cage.
However, a chance meeting with the brazen Miss Tisdale gives Marc the opportunity to reinvent himself into the man he’s always dreamed of being. When his deception comes to light, and ghosts from both their pasts threaten to unravel the intimacy they’ve come to cherish, will either of them set their fears aside long enough to embrace love? Or will Miss Tisdale’s stubbornness divide them?
EXCERPT
    Jason looked bored. “Get to the important part, Grayson. Was she beautiful?”
    Again, Marc was ill-prepared to answer such a question. Taken individually, that large mouth, those plump pink lips, her long nose, red hair, and freckled skin—nothing about her was spectacular by any means. But together, all those odd pieces and parts, which seemed so ordinary at first glance, fit together to form the picture of a particularly stunning woman.
    “Yes,” he answered quite simply. No need to give Jason any more fodder for discussion by rambling on like some sort of awful poet.
    Jason grinned from ear to ear. “Well, that is quite eventful, indeed.” He swept a crumb off his jacket sleeve. “Does this original have a name?”
    Marc stopped suddenly, his coffee halfway to his lips. “Name?”
    Jason laughed. “Yes, her name. This unique creature has to have a name. Diana? Aphrodite? Venus, perhaps?” Then Jason stopped laughing as realization spread over his face like a mordant rash. “You don’t know her bloody name, do you?”
    Marc set his cup down on the table and stared at it. “She never volunteered the information and I never bothered to ask.”
REVIEW
3.75 stars
Taming Miss Tisdale by Jessica Jefferson is a historical romance that explores the travails of countering Society’s perception of one’s role, from the perspective of each gender.  (Fern) Tamsin Tisdale has been sent away to escape the consequences of her actions but she continues to be true to herself, much to the surprise of the gentleman who introduces himself as Mr. Winston.  Tamsin finds herself strongly attracted to the man who finds the freedom to be himself when around her but they both have to find a way to share their respective truths and decide whether they are going to let those around them shape their futures.
This story is a gentle read that combines multiple tropes in an entertaining story.  The hero is tired of dealing with the strictures imposed upon him and finding his backbone.  The heroine is determined to go her own way, no matter who she has to defy, but she slowly discovers that there may be someone worth changing for although he has secrets of his own that may change everything.  There is a friend of the hero who may or not be trying to be helpful but seemed to almost steal the spotlight, hopefully he will get his own book.  I found myself a bit frustrated by some of the events as they didn’t quite seem logical but there were great episodes of banter that enlivened things.  Be forewarned that this tale features someone who is not a strong alpha male but rather a mild-mannered hero who is finding a way to cope with his handicap.  This story can stand alone yet connects to another story about a sibling who has found her own path to follow and undoubtedly will be augmented by more entertaining tales about the Tisdale siblings.
A copy of this title was provided to me for an honest review.
Taming Miss Tisdale by Jessica Jefferson (guest post, spotlight, excerpt and GIVEAWAY)
I have the pleasure of having a guest post by Jessica Jefferson today who is musing on...
The heroine as stereotype?
by
Jessica Jefferson
Throughout literature there are several heroine stereotypes that repeat themselves time and time again.
First, there’s the tough girl with Daddy issues.  She’s got a chip on her shoulder, as well as one or two tattoos.  She often refuses to fall in love because that’s just a sign of a vulnerability that she doesn’t want to admit to having.
And then there’s the unsure, shy female who becomes empowered through her relationship with the uber-dominating alpha male.
There’s the studious, smart girl who miraculously turns into a supermodel the moment she removes her reading glasses.  Usually she’s pretty covered up, only to reveal her Brazilian bikini body at an unexpected moment.
Then there’s the lovely, too-good-to-be-true type that struggles with some sort of inferiority issue contrary to all evidence indicating that her life should be perfect.  There’s always some sort of inner struggle taking place with this one, though the motivation may not be crystal clear.
And finally – there’s the tomboyish mischief-maker.   That one’s my personal favorite.  In my latest release, Taming Miss Tisdale, the heroine (Tamsin), is characterized by her feisty temper and inappropriate clothing choices.  Regency novels are a great place to find such a heroine.
So why do authors keep coming back to these tried and true characterizations of the literary female form?  They work, obviously.  But why do they work?  Even though a heroine may be overtly characterized by one of these descriptions, throughout their story they may adopt characteristics of any number of these different stereotypes.  The most endearing of heroines will be a contradiction unto themselves-a combination of all of the above.
And like the heroine, readers are not just one of these stereotypes, but a combination of them all in one way or another.  At different times in our lives we may channel one of these identities more so than another, but at one point all of us will have a need to play the tough girl or the smart girl.  We are able to see ourselves reflected through these heroines, which is why they work so well.
