Husky Love (Friend of Gaynor Beach Animal Rescue) by Gabbi Grey (spotlight and excerpt)

Husky Love

Friend of Gaynor Beach Animal Rescue

ADULT title

Danny

I may be young, but I've done a hell of a lot of growing up in the past year. I watched my big brother deal with the challenges of loving someone, went through some medical stuff myself, and changed my career plans and ultimately, my city. Gaynor Beach is smaller than where I was, but it has two attractions—my brother's big new house, where he's letting me live for now, and Rob Dunn. When I met Rob, just, damn. Like my brother, I wanted to help that sweet, stubborn guy and his cute kids get back on their feet. Maybe the rescue husky wasn't the right gesture, despite Rob’s connection to her, but a dog is love on four paws, and I plan to be there to help all the way.

Rob

I fled my abusive husband with my two kids and the clothes on our backs. I'm grateful every day for the support the Gaynor Beach folks have given us…okay, I'm not sure I'm precisely grateful for the rambunctious young husky Danny Reynolds gave us, but Trouble makes my kids smile, and that's a big win in my eyes. I'm determined to get back on my feet. I hate relying on other people to help us, but somehow it doesn't bother me as much when it comes from Danny. It's nice to have a real friend after all those isolated years, but do I want to keep him in the friend zone?

This slow-burn small-town gay romance novel is about fresh starts, accepting help, two sweet kids, and an adorable husky named Trouble.

Exclusive Excerpt

As I ushered Danny into the house, with him carrying Thomas, it struck me that this was the first time someone else had hauled the carrier for me. Gerard certainly had never done it. And we’d been within walking distance of the medical clinic and stores, so I’d just pushed the double stroller.

In other words, no one had ever helped before.

I blinked rapidly. He’s just carrying your son. Don’t make a big deal out of it. And I wouldn’t, I promised myself. I glanced over my shoulder at the other two men, but they just waved us on and turned to peer at something on the porch. I left them to do whatever, and followed Danny.

He moved to the couch, gently placed the carrier on the floor, straightened to his full height, and looked around. “You know, this is my brother’s house and I’ve never seen the inside.”

He spoke in a hushed tone around Thomas, which I appreciated. He needn’t have bothered. Thomas could sleep through anything.

Danny stretched a little, rolling his shoulders back. He was tall, although not as tall as his brother. He was also… I sought the right word. Not fat or chubby or anything like that. Just…solid. Both he and his brother had some heft to them. As opposed to myself who was short and… short and scrawny. No! Slender. Slim. Something that wasn’t a word Gerard had used to make me feel bad about myself. Only now was I realizing just how often I repeated Gerard’s cold criticism in my own head. I was determined to learn not to put myself down.

Gerard did enough of that for the both of us.

Danny smiled broadly. “My brother’s lived here for a couple of months, and I’ve never even seen the place.”

“It’s a great place.” I tried not to think of how small it was in comparison to my LA house because that didn’t matter. We had a roof over our heads. For the moment, we were safe. “I love that Hallie’s going to get her own room.” I didn’t mind sharing a room with Thomas. Having the crib next to the large bed would be a tight fit, but—having met James—I saw why the bed had to be so big. The guy was massive. And Colin wasn’t a slouch either.

As Danny craned his neck, I offered up a smile. “Why don’t you take a look around? Then you can say you’ve seen the place.”

“Oh, I don’t want to—”

“Really, it’s okay.” And Hallie was growing heavier in my arms.

As if sensing the issue, Danny nodded and headed down the hallway to the bathroom, bedroom, and den.

I lowered Hallie to the couch. “Do you want to read a book?”

She nodded silently, her gaze on where Danny had vanished.

The Beauty of the Beasty by Gabbi Grey (spotlight and exclusive excerpt) ADULT title

The Beauty of the Beast

A Contemporary Fairytale MM Romance

by
Gabbi Grey

ADULT title

Synopsis

Dean

All my life, I dreamed about making the long trip from Australia to Canada to study forestry amid the old-growth stands of the Pacific Northwest. Now here I am, living the dream. Of course, nothing's perfect. The only housing I can find is renting a room from a grumpy, reclusive guy who doesn’t seem to want me around. I should keep out of his way and focus on my studies, but there’s something about him that keeps drawing me in. I feel less homesick when I’m with him, and maybe I can make a difference for more than just the trees.

Adam

Life as I knew it ended with my horrific accident ten years ago. There's no point to my existence now, but I can't seem to stop living, so I hide my battered carcass in my mountain home. There, I can wander from room to room and no one stares, no one laughs, no one even remembers I exist. Until I make the mistake of offering a stranded Aussie a room to rent. It should've been a simple favor—two men with our own spaces, ignoring each other. Instead, he's always close by, and he won't let me wallow, and what's worse, I think I'm starting to like that. But there's no way someone like me can have a future with someone like him. Right?

The Beauty of the Beast is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, set in the wilds of British Columbia, where an Aussie forester a long way from home falls for the untouchable man he shouldn’t want. The novel has moderate angst, a feisty foreigner, and what happens when someone trusts again.

Dean

“I’ll be doing a couple of lectures at the University of British Columbia as well as a few out here at the University of the Fraser Valley. I’m working with a land-management group as part of a municipal project. Mission City has a working forest, and I’ll be part of that project. I want to replicate some of the husbandry practices back home.”

I chanced a glance at Ravi.

His eyes had gone a little glassy.

Maddox, though, seemed more engaged. At least, if his body language was any indication. “I used to do back-country rescues,” he offered. He pointed to his husband. “Pediatric nurse.”

“Both important jobs.” I eyed him. “Used to?” Damn, was that too nosy? I’m always stepping in it…

“Rescue gone wrong. Bum knee.” He gave me a small smile. “These days I do diaper duty and cybersecurity freelance work.”

I would’ve pegged him in his mid-forties. If these were his first kids, he’d gotten a bit of a later start. Ravi, though, was under thirty for sure.

“And dog watching.” Ravi raised an eyebrow.

“Isn’t that dog sitting?” I was curious. Perhaps they called it something different in Canada.

Ravi barked out a laugh. “Oh, if Princess Sofia didn’t belong to us, then yes, it would be dog sitting. But we are responsible for the irascible mutt…so it’s dog watching.”

Maddox glowered.

My phone vibrated. I yanked it out of my back pocket to send the call to voicemail. Oh, wait, the number was Canadian. I glanced at Maddox across the table from me.

He nodded that I should take the call.

“Hello?”

“Mr. Hargrave?”

“Yes, this is he. Or that’s me.” I barely knew what time it was, let alone, apparently, my own name.

“Oh, I’m so glad I caught you. My name is Ethel Thistle.”

Ethel…oh, my new landlady. “Nice to speak to you, Mrs. Thistle. I was just grabbing some dinner before—”

“Oh, then I’m so glad I caught you.”

My stomach sank. “Yes?”

She sighed. “My daughter has been living with this asshole.”

I glanced at the table, somewhat comforted to see no one could, apparently, hear her speaking. “Okay.”

“Anyway, she finally left the horrible man. Just this morning. And I was so glad the basement suite was empty so I could give it to her—”

“Would this be the basement suite you promised me?”

“Well.” She clucked her tongue. “You’re a young man with prospects. I’m sure you’ll find something. My daughter has two young children. Wouldn’t be right for them to be on the streets, now would it?”

“Could they not live with you? We have a contract. I signed a lease and sent you a deposit.”

“I’ve sent the money back.” She cleared her throat. “I guess you could sue me for breach of contract…”

But I wouldn’t.

And she knew it.

I blinked several times. Need to remove these contact lenses.

Right…like that was the problem.

“Do you…” I swallowed. “Do you know anywhere else that might—”

“In this rental market? Not a chance.” She paused. “Oh dear, that sounded callous.”

That was callous, but my mother taught me that if I couldn’t say something nice, that I was to hold my tongue. “Well, thank you for letting me know.”

“Best of luck, young man.” Then she cut the line.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it.

Thank you for joining me to celebrate the rerelease of my second chance romance novella, The Play of His Life, and thank you to The Reading Addict for having me today.

I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt from The Play of His Life. Check it out below!

Everything, literally everything Christian had done since he’d walked back into Riley’s life last week had served to prove to Riley that, despite how he’d left things six years ago, Christian hadn’t forgotten him. And he was still taking care of him. Christian helped out at Warm Glow, he fussed over Riley’s knee, he gifted him with an amazing memory scrapbook, he made sure his Christmas wasn’t spent alone with his TV. Now this. This tiny tattoo shouldn’t have meant so much, not all these years later. But it all proved that Riley’s heart and soul still belonged to Christian and always would.

97. Riley’s jersey number.

Remarkably, it was tattooed on the inside of Christian’s wrist.

It was also the year he and Christian met on the first day of second grade. Had Christian ever made that connection? They’d both been transplants from Quebec, neither knowing a lick of English. Their last names—Deschamps and Dufresne—meant that, alphabetically, they sat next to each other in school. Instant friendship. And the fact they lived in the same neighborhood? Even better.

“One day,” Christian had said sometime in high school, when it became clear that Riley was developing into a wickedly talented goalie, “you’re going to be drafted into the NHL. And when you do, I’m going to get your jersey number tattooed somewhere.”

Riley had snorted. “No, you’re not.”

“Am, too.”

“Yeah, right. Where?”

“Dunno.” Christian had shrugged. “Somewhere important.”

His wrist. The inside of his wrist. A place not easily hidden from others. A place where he’d likely see his own tattoo every day for the rest of his life. A reminder of the promise he’d made. A reminder of what they’d once meant to each other, what they’d lost. The friendship they’d left behind. Behind, but never forgotten and always treasured.

The ice pack slid off his knee when he shifted to his side so he could face Christian. He didn’t bother blinking the wetness out of his eyes. Christian deserved to know how important, how loved, how cherished the tattoo made him feel. He pressed a closed-mouth kiss very gently to Christian’s lips.

“Thank you,” he said, heart too full for more.

Christian only smiled softly and used the arm around Riley’s waist to pull him closer. Riley tucked his head underneath Christian’s chin and let himself drift.

Teaser 1

Excerpt:

When Riley screwed up an order because he was busy thinking about trying not to think about Christian, he pretended this day was the same as any other and that Christian was still in Vancouver and went about his business.

Christian’s gruff laughter from the back shot that plan to hell.

It was almost an hour later that the line disappeared, though a few people remained at the tables.

“Is it just me, or was that busier than normal?” his other part-timer, Henry, asked. Henry was a seventy-year-old retired army vet who only worked Tuesdays and Fridays because those were the days his wife hosted her knitting club and it was either get the hell out of the house or listen to them talk about the misadventures of their various grandkids.

“Everything’s crazier at the holidays,” Riley replied, wiping down the drinks counter.

Henry started wiping down the small counter that held the condiments. “Should’ve seen the fight that broke out over a parking spot at the Toys “R” Us yesterday. Thought I was going to have to use my army general’s voice.”

Riley had heard Henry’s army general voice. It was terrifying.

Speaking of terrifying voices, where was Christian? Not that his voice was terrifying, but his grumpiness had been known to scare a kid or two.

Riley turned and there Christian was, standing in the doorway to the kitchen, hands on his hips. He wore one of Warm Glow’s green aprons over jeans and a dark blue T-shirt. Just the sight of him made Riley’s heart flip.

Christian had always been a big guy, but Riley had forgotten just how imposing he could be when he scowled that way. And what was with his pouf hairstyle? A pompadour, was it? Riley had seen hairstyles like that on guys before and thought those men should be on the cover of cheesy romance novels. But Christian pulled it off, probably because he could scowl anybody into liking anything.
“Is it my turn to order now?” Christian asked.

It made Riley laugh and the tension drained from his shoulders. “Sure, what do you want?”

“What’s good?”

“Seriously? You’re asking me that in my own bakery? Everything’s good. The salad—”

“What guy likes salad?” Christian interrupted. He said “salad” like “peas”—which Riley knew Christian hated more than any food ever.

“I like salad,” Riley said, slightly offended. Warm Glow’s salads were good, damn it!

“Me, too,” Henry said, coming around the counter to grab a wet cloth. “Know why?”

“Because you’re turning over a new leaf?” Christian suggested.

Riley just looked at him.

“What?” Christian said. “That was funny.”

“That was as lame as ever.”

“I thought it was funny,” Henry said.

“Me, too,” piped in a customer adding milk to his coffee.

Christian raised an eyebrow at Riley like, see?

“Awww,” Riley gushed. “You have fans.”

That got Christian scowling again.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

The Play of His Life by Amy Aislin features Christian Dufresne who needs a push to reconnect with his ex-best friend and lover, former pro-hockey player Riley Deschamps. Maybe it’s time to find out if what they had is worth fighting for.

This adult contemporary gay romance has great elements—yummy athlete, smart web marketer, a relationship that is comfortable and familiar, and a meddling mom who knows more than her son is quite comfortable with. I love some of the elements, especially the unique gifts that each presents the other, the way they welcome the novice hockey player and make him feel comfortable, and Christian’s mom pointing out that the front door works just fine, lol. I didn’t quite feel that some of the other elements gelled, since their connection is so strong that I really couldn’t see them not having resolved their differences sooner. This is a sweet, feel-good story that gives a glimpse of Canada and two lovely guys, and I recommend it to anyone in search of a quick light romance.

Arctic Heat by Annabeth Albert (Spotlight, excerpt, and review) ANT ADULT title

Blog Tour Exclusive Q&A:
Q: Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

AA: Both characters, Quill and Owen, are special to me for different reasons. Quill, my grumpy park ranger, is special to me because he’s a more mature hero, but he’s also unaware of the extent of his own loneliness. Giving Quill the HEA he deserves was immensely satisfying. Owen, my optimistic new volunteer assigned to Quill, is special because he represents a character that I’ve wanted to do for a long time—one who survived a major medical scare and now has a second lease on life and is determined to make the most of each day.

Q: What was the inspiration for the story?

AA: My amazing critique partner and best friend, Wendy Qualls, came to me with the idea of how in remote areas, park rangers are often snowed in together for months at a time. I loved the idea immediately, and we started brainstorming. I brought in a lot of my favorite tropes—opposites attract, age gap, close proximity, building friendship, adventure, working together, and more as the plot started to take shape for me. Then later, I came up with the idea of making it series set in Alaska, and worked that plot bunny into the series. Book Three seemed to fit best for this one, so that’s where it landed, but initially it was the first plot bunny, and everything else sprang from that one.

Q: What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

AA: Love finds us where we least expect it, but most need it. Neither Owen nor Quill expects to find the love of their lives when they’re snowed in together for an Alaskan winter, but love has a way of finding people when they need it most and of healing old wounds and giving fresh courage. I really wanted to show how love can provide the best fresh start of all, even when we stay in the same place we’ve always been or when we venture thousands of miles out of our comfort zone—love finds those who need it most.

Q: What is the significance of the title?

AA: ARCTIC HEAT is actually the coldest book in the series—tons and tons of snow and snowed in fun. The heat totally comes from the chemistry between the main characters!

Q: If you had to describe the main characters in three words, what would those three words be?

AA: As the story opens, Quill is grumpy, lonely, and loyal. He’s grumpy about being assigned a new volunteer, lonely from long hours alone and with his BFF now assigned elsewhere, and he’s loyal to his job. Meanwhile, Owen is optimistic, fun, and adventure seeking. He’s an optimist who survived a health scare and now is seeking fun and adventure in Alaska.

As the weeks pass, the two snowbound men give in to temptation. But can their seasonal romance last until spring? Excerpt:

“Tea for everyone. Then a hot shower and lots of blankets,” Owen declared as they entered the building, bossy streak making a blessed reappearance right when Quill really needed to not be the one thinking. If Owen had a plan, so much the better because Quill wasn’t good for much besides stripping off his gear, stowing his piece, stomping upstairs, and flopping into a kitchen chair. Owen draped one of the blankets from the couch around his shoulders before doing the same for himself, wearing it like a cape as he made tea. “Bourbon in yours? I found a bottle in the cabinet the other week.”
“Yeah.” Quill didn’t often imbibe, but he needed the burn of the liquor even more than any warmth-giving properties. The bourbon was there exactly for nights like this one where Quill had done his best and it still hadn’t been enough. Fucking universe and its random acts of cruelty.
After adding a healthy glug of liquor to each of their mugs, Owen shoved a cup at Quill. He also put a plate of cookies from the batch that got baked on the table. “Here you go. Eat something so the alcohol doesn’t hit too hard.”
“Feels like I should be the one taking care of you,” Quill admitted after he’d had a few sips of tea, let the warmth and burn work past the tightness in his throat and chest.
“We can take care of each other,” Owen countered, pulling his chair close to Quill’s. “That’s what we’re here for, right?”
A few hours ago, Quill would have argued that being alone was the best way to cope with something like this—find a way to push through and on to the next day either with the aid of some strong drink or just a restless night spent replaying the events until sleep did its thing, softened the edges of the awfulness. But when Owen grabbed his hand, squeezed, and looked at him with such compassion in his eyes, Quill couldn’t find it in himself to pull away.
“Yeah,” he said, even as he knew that he shouldn’t let himself come to need Owen like this, to lean on him. He and Hattie had always tended to retreat to their own corners after a hard shift, and he prided himself on being a strong man. Sure, accidents like this affected him as they would anyone, but he’d always tried to handle those emotions on his own. Harsh memories of his father’s comments about men who showed their feelings didn’t help any, but lately all those memories, all the family drama, seemed more distant. Less sharp.
And funny how without that mantle of a painful past, his present seemed somehow more hopeful, old wounds and past fears no match for Owen. In fact, they’d been on the verge of another disagreement when Owen had dropped everything to come help. And now here he was, taking care of Quill yet again. Owen simply didn’t seem to have it in him to hold a grudge too long. Quill would be a fool to pull away now, even if he knew the next night like this, the inevitable one after Owen left, would hurt that much more. But that moment, all he wanted to do was hold Owen close, take every comfort he offered from Christmas lights to hot toddies to underdone gingerbread to that strong hand of his, holding on when Quill needed it most.

My review:

4 stars

Arctic Heat by Annabeth Albert is part of her ‘Frozen Hearts’ adult gay romance series and centers on Ranger Quilleran Ramsey, whose orderly existence is upset by the presence of forthright volunteer Owen Han, who makes no secret of his attraction to the taciturn man who seems determined to resist any overtures.

I love the play on words of this series title, since these guys are literally dealing with frozen temperatures and all of the hazards attendant on folks out in that kind of weather, while there are the emotional implications as well. The contrast between the irascible Ranger who is already uncomfortable at having lost his regular partner and the newbie volunteer who wants to experience life to its fullest makes this a fun and touching story. I love being able to armchair travel as this author transports us to an entirely different way of life and paints vivid pictures of both the beauty and the dangers of the environment. The touch of diversity made the story even more attractive for me, and I enjoyed watching the evolution of the relationship that grew organically. I look forward to reading other tales that feature the fascinating men who are willing to brave the extreme temperatures of this part of the world.
