The Beauty of the Beasty by Gabbi Grey (spotlight and exclusive excerpt) ADULT title

The Beauty of the Beast

A Contemporary Fairytale MM Romance

by
Gabbi Grey

ADULT title

Synopsis

Dean

All my life, I dreamed about making the long trip from Australia to Canada to study forestry amid the old-growth stands of the Pacific Northwest. Now here I am, living the dream. Of course, nothing's perfect. The only housing I can find is renting a room from a grumpy, reclusive guy who doesn’t seem to want me around. I should keep out of his way and focus on my studies, but there’s something about him that keeps drawing me in. I feel less homesick when I’m with him, and maybe I can make a difference for more than just the trees.

Adam

Life as I knew it ended with my horrific accident ten years ago. There's no point to my existence now, but I can't seem to stop living, so I hide my battered carcass in my mountain home. There, I can wander from room to room and no one stares, no one laughs, no one even remembers I exist. Until I make the mistake of offering a stranded Aussie a room to rent. It should've been a simple favor—two men with our own spaces, ignoring each other. Instead, he's always close by, and he won't let me wallow, and what's worse, I think I'm starting to like that. But there's no way someone like me can have a future with someone like him. Right?

The Beauty of the Beast is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, set in the wilds of British Columbia, where an Aussie forester a long way from home falls for the untouchable man he shouldn’t want. The novel has moderate angst, a feisty foreigner, and what happens when someone trusts again.

Dean

“I’ll be doing a couple of lectures at the University of British Columbia as well as a few out here at the University of the Fraser Valley. I’m working with a land-management group as part of a municipal project. Mission City has a working forest, and I’ll be part of that project. I want to replicate some of the husbandry practices back home.”

I chanced a glance at Ravi.

His eyes had gone a little glassy.

Maddox, though, seemed more engaged. At least, if his body language was any indication. “I used to do back-country rescues,” he offered. He pointed to his husband. “Pediatric nurse.”

“Both important jobs.” I eyed him. “Used to?” Damn, was that too nosy? I’m always stepping in it…

“Rescue gone wrong. Bum knee.” He gave me a small smile. “These days I do diaper duty and cybersecurity freelance work.”

I would’ve pegged him in his mid-forties. If these were his first kids, he’d gotten a bit of a later start. Ravi, though, was under thirty for sure.

“And dog watching.” Ravi raised an eyebrow.

“Isn’t that dog sitting?” I was curious. Perhaps they called it something different in Canada.

Ravi barked out a laugh. “Oh, if Princess Sofia didn’t belong to us, then yes, it would be dog sitting. But we are responsible for the irascible mutt…so it’s dog watching.”

Maddox glowered.

My phone vibrated. I yanked it out of my back pocket to send the call to voicemail. Oh, wait, the number was Canadian. I glanced at Maddox across the table from me.

He nodded that I should take the call.

“Hello?”

“Mr. Hargrave?”

“Yes, this is he. Or that’s me.” I barely knew what time it was, let alone, apparently, my own name.

“Oh, I’m so glad I caught you. My name is Ethel Thistle.”

Ethel…oh, my new landlady. “Nice to speak to you, Mrs. Thistle. I was just grabbing some dinner before—”

“Oh, then I’m so glad I caught you.”

My stomach sank. “Yes?”

She sighed. “My daughter has been living with this asshole.”

I glanced at the table, somewhat comforted to see no one could, apparently, hear her speaking. “Okay.”

“Anyway, she finally left the horrible man. Just this morning. And I was so glad the basement suite was empty so I could give it to her—”

“Would this be the basement suite you promised me?”

“Well.” She clucked her tongue. “You’re a young man with prospects. I’m sure you’ll find something. My daughter has two young children. Wouldn’t be right for them to be on the streets, now would it?”

“Could they not live with you? We have a contract. I signed a lease and sent you a deposit.”

“I’ve sent the money back.” She cleared her throat. “I guess you could sue me for breach of contract…”

But I wouldn’t.

And she knew it.

I blinked several times. Need to remove these contact lenses.

Right…like that was the problem.

“Do you…” I swallowed. “Do you know anywhere else that might—”

“In this rental market? Not a chance.” She paused. “Oh dear, that sounded callous.”

That was callous, but my mother taught me that if I couldn’t say something nice, that I was to hold my tongue. “Well, thank you for letting me know.”

“Best of luck, young man.” Then she cut the line.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it.

A Fall of Light by L.J. Greene (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

A Fall of Light

by

LJ Greene

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Contemporary M/M Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

LJ Greene brings to life one of her most compelling characters: the sensitive, eccentric, bass guitarist, Greg Van de Meer. A Fall of Light weaves together the strands of Greg’s private and public lives—a shattering personal history, a love affair with potentially disastrous consequences, and family bonds that are stretched to their breaking point.

BLURB:

It’s been fifteen years since Greg was outed by his fundamentalist father at age sixteen and sent from home, with devastating consequences for both he and his younger brother, Asher. Now unlaid ghosts from the past are stirring. With his band’s success on the world stage, Greg’s life takes a complicated turn when he develops a friendship with Louis Angel, an ex-Marine with a secret of his own, and finds himself facing familiar threats from an unexpected source.

Strained loyalties, a private affair, and Greg’s own guarded history collide dangerously until a visit from an old foe forces him to confront past wounds and present beliefs. Allegiances are called into question and he must decide whether the secrets he’s fighting to protect are worth the life he’s finally ready to have.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
He’d forgotten. Not just what it felt like to be touched by a man, but how much a part of him those desires truly were. He’d spent so much of his life in wary vigilance, rarely being able to fully enjoy his sexuality or even the fruits of his life. And he’d had so many blessings, but he was always wary. It was exhausting to be so wary.
He closed his eyes, and just for a moment, let himself imagine what it would be like to surrender to another person’s care. No, to Louis’s care, specifically; not some other’s. To Louis’s willingness to take care of him, to lean on him, as he seemed to want Greg to do. To be himself—fully himself—and to trust Louis to accept him, warts and all.
Louis’s face was now turned away, half buried in the white mounds of his pillow, his sleep-warm arms clutching it.
I’m afraid, he explained to him, in his thoughts. I’m afraid I’m going to fall . . . to get used to this, he corrected himself firmly, and you’re going to decide that being with a man—or being with me—isn’t what you imagined it to be. “I told you,” he whispered softly aloud, “I’m not a casual person. And I’m afraid that I won’t be able to be casual about you.”
A soft snore was his only answer. He leaned over, breathing in the musky sweetness of that firm, smooth shoulder, and pressed a small, loving kiss there.
My review:
3.75 stars
“A Fall of Light” by L.J. Greene follows the evolution of the relationship that develops between a rock star with a troubled past and the man who is supposed to make sure he is safe. In addition to the stresses of being in the closet, there are also dangers from the past that threaten to undermine everything these two are building together.
This adult contemporary gay romance provides encouragement and inspiration for those who have to fight to overcome dysfunctional families and censure from those who should support them. I love that these two find a way to get past their insecurities and learn to trust each other, even as I cringe at the betrayal and emotional blackmail that is all too familiar to those of us who deal with toxic people. I was able to relate to the characters easily and became invested in their journey, and I like the fact that some of the others in the band seem to be destined to get their lives featured as well. I hope to see this couple featured again some time, so we can catch up on what they’re doing.
Hidden Blade by Kaje Harper (Spotlight, excerpt, and review) ADULT title GBP
Blurb
Cam
Social anxiety's been my constant companion for twenty-three years, sometimes in the background, sometimes silencing me and yanking my guts out in the nearest trash can. No matter how much I love playing music, I'm never going to get up on a stage and perform in front of a crowd. But since I met Erik, and was asked to join his band Hellsbane, that knowledge hurts worse.
No heart (even Erik's) or dick (even Erik's) is big enough to carry me past my limits, but God, I wish there was a way.
Erik
Life's damned unfair when a guy with the voice of a hard-rock angel and a songwriting talent like Cam's can only post anonymous videos online. But you can't cure anxiety with wanting, or willpower. My drummer needs to quit trying to push Cam onstage with us before he breaks.
Rocktoberfest's still our goal, and touring with Hellsbane was my only ambition, until I met Cam. Now I can't have everything I love in one place, but dammit, I wish there was a way.
A first-times, life challenges, coming out, rockstar romance.
Hidden Blade is part of the multi-author The Road to Rocktoberfest 2022 series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but why not read them all and see who hits the stage next? Hot rockstars and the men who love them, what more could you ask for? Kick back, load up your kindle and enjoy the men of Rocktoberfest!
Excerpt
Cameron
“You suck.” I glared at Andre as I clutched the puke bucket between my knees.
“Hey, you did it, dude.” He took his eyes off the road for a second to grin at me. “You got through a whole set and walked off that stage with your head held high.”
“And my intestines climbing out my mouth.”
“Ew, gross image.”
“You’re a nurse. You eat gross images for breakfast.”
Andre threw his head back and laughed. “Okay, you got me. But seriously, wasn’t that even a little bit cool?”
“The bit where I puked in the john before I went onstage, or the part where I got as far as the dumpster down the block afterward?”
“Oh, the dumpster. For sure.” He patted my knee. “I won’t push you anymore. But you were a hit. If you wanted a job or a good fuck, they were lining up to offer it to you. Maybe both at the same time.”
“Hah. Bullshit.” I’m skinny and beanpole-tall and I haven’t cut my hair in years because reasons, and I have this nose that I only don’t hate because it’s just like my dad’s was.
“I mean it.” At the stoplight he fished in his pocket and pulled out a card. “Lead singer of this group was drooling all over your set and he came looking for you like a moose hunting its mate when you were done.”
“You make him sound so appealing.” I took the card from his fingers. “Apparently I could’ve fucked a moose. Wow.”
“Or been fucked by.” The light turned and Andre hit the gas. “He wasn’t that bad, for an older dude. I know you like them with some years on ’em.”
“Shut up, Bones.”
“Only the truth, Spock.”
I chuckled, despite the acid still churning around in my stomach. No one on the planet knew me as well as Andre, and in one regrettably truthful moment years back I’d spilled my attraction to silver foxes and solid older men. He liked to tease me, but never in a mean way, and he kept bigger secrets of mine than that one. “I’m not trying to get laid.”
“You should be. Seriously, Cam, you’ve been with what, two guys in your whole life? A man has needs, or so I tell Lyssa every day.”
“That girl is way too good for you.”
Woman, Cameron. Don’t let the g-word cross your lips. And you’re damn right she’s too good for me. The key is never letting her figure that out, am I right?”
“Sure. Whatever you say.” Andre was the best. His clowning was intended to distract me, keeping my anxious brain from fixating on what-the-shit-did-I-just-do??? Which I shouldn’t have let myself think about, dammit, and I flipped the card over in my fingers to focus on something else. Hellsbane. A familiar band logo and on the next line, Erik Svenson - lead guitar and vocals. With a phone number, an email, Instagram, Bandcamp, and Twitter.
Hellsbane’s business card! I’d known they’d be there, of course, even if we deliberately arrived only just in time for my set, so I hadn’t heard them play. And if they’d been in the audience, I hadn’t recognized a single face in the one panicked look I’d allowed myself. Although… There’d been a big blond, bearded guy up front who might’ve been their lead singer… Our eyes had met, and he hadn’t laughed at the fear in mine.
Was that Erik? Watching me? Fuck, maybe I should’ve played my new song, even if the chorus wasn’t polished yet. Or not skipped that instrumental bridge, except if I’d stopped singing, I might not’ve started again. How bad did I screw up in front of Erik Svenson?…
About the Author
I get asked about my name a lot. It's not something exotic, though. “Kaje” is pronounced just like “cage” – it’s an old nickname, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I’ve been writing far longer than I care to admit (*whispers – forty-five years*), although mostly for my own entertainment. I write M/M romance, often with added mystery, fantasy, historical, SciFi, paranormal… I also have Young Adult short stories (some released under the pen name Kira Harp.)
After decades of writing just for fun, my husband convinced me I really should submit something, somewhere. My first professionally published book, Life Lessons, came out in May 2011. I now have a good-sized backlist in ebooks and print, both free and professionally published, including Amazon bestseller The Rebuilding Year and Rainbow Award Best Mystery-Thriller Tracefinder: Contact. My review:
4.5 out of 5 stars
“Hidden Blade” by Kaje Harper is part of the shared-world series, ‘Road to Rocktoberfest’, and features Erik, lead vocalist and guitarist for the group Hellsbane, and Cam, a younger, painfully shy but talented singer/songwriter. Although they mesh well at songwriting, their painful pasts may make any personal relationship too much of an obstacle to get past. Then comes the chance of a lifetime, and they have to decide what price they’re willing to pay for fame.
This contemporary gay romance is written by one of my favorite authors in this genre, and as usual, the characters immediately captured my attention and became real to me. I was invested in their story, ached at the trauma they’d experienced, and I anxiously waited for them to discover a way to get past the multiple challenges they faced. It was fascinating to get a glimpse of the hard work and dedication required to mesh as a band, and the creative process was fun to watch. I identified with Cam’s social anxiety, although I’m very glad that I don’t have it to his extent, but his arc was a creative example of finding a way to cope.
I enjoyed this tale so much that I rushed through the first time, impatient to see how things turned out, then reread the story so I could savor the nuances. I suspect this will be another of Ms. Harper’s stories that I revisit again and again, and I hope to see more of these guys at some point in their future.
Finally, I headed outside. Opening the screen door with both hands full proved interesting, but I managed. I was shutting it when someone appeared to help. A petite someone. The sun was bright off the water in the pool, but I quickly figured out who it was. “Thanks, Julie.”
She smiled. “Of course.”
The woman was so beautiful she sometimes took my breath away. Almost-white blonde hair, stunning green eyes, and a smile as wide as any ever offered to me. She took the bowl of mixed nuts. But as she gazed into my eyes, she faltered.
“Is something wrong?”
“You’re very flushed. Did you walk here? Have you been out in the sun too long?” She pressed a hand to my forehead.
“Uh, no. I’m fine. I’m totally fine.”
“Thomas.” Her voice held a note of concern.
“No, really, I’m fine. Just the sunshine is bright and—”
Before I could offer more, my boss appeared. He removed his sunglasses, and the concern in his brown eyes was obvious.
“Really, I’m fine.” My brain was fried, and I’d just had a hand job, but really, I was fine.
Julie grabbed the other bowl from my hands, and then Thomas grabbed both mine in his.
I winced. Yep, scrubbed a little bit too hard.
He glanced down at my hands, then back up at my face.
Was I beet red? Undoubtedly.
“What’s going on?”
No missing Thomas’s concern.
“I just washed my hands before I got the nuts and chips.”
“Thomas, what’s going on?”
Great, now Peter was involved. Could this get any worse? The gorgeous movie star stood in the shallow end of the pool with a toddler in his arms. He was all slicked-back wet hair, muscular chest, and nice biceps. Basically sex on a stick. I’d overheard Thomas using that description—I didn’t think I was supposed to overhear—and I’d never use it myself. That being said, it fit perfectly.
“Something’s wrong, Peter.”
No, Thomas, nothing is wrong. Please believe me.
Something told me protestations and denials would only make things worse.
“Val.” Thomas whispered the name under his breath. So low I wasn’t even sure Julie heard it.
“No—” Crap. Val…Valentino… Yeah, probably the same guy. And something told me he wasn’t just the caterer.
“Hey, I brought salsa.” Valentino, no, Val, stepped onto the patio.
Thomas lunged for him, but Julie was faster.
I managed to grab the salsa bowl as she hauled him up. I honestly believed she was going to hit him—a move she could perfectly execute—but she spun him around, kicked him in the ass, and he went flailing into the pool.
She dusted off her hands.
I stood stunned.
Skylar clapped.
Oh my God, I want to die.
A quick trip before Christmas. Instead, I get the shock of my life. Do I face this new challenge or do what I’ve always done—run? Excerpt
I entered the kitchen to find Angus hunkered down on a stool, watching Justin stirring something in a saucepan. A wonderful aroma of tomato and spices filled the room. I used to cook, once upon a time. Loved making elaborate meals for Maddox. I’d puttered around a few times since then, but mostly did takeout. What was the point of cooking for one?
And now two?
Justin’s eyes lit when he spotted me. He pointed to the stool with his wooden spoon. “You’re in time to solve the great debate.”
Tentatively, I sat. “Okay…” My voice held wariness. Of that, I was sure.
“Do mushrooms belong in spaghetti sauce?”
I looked back and forth between the man and Angus, trying to determine who was on which side.
“Don’t think about it,” Justin admonished. “Just go with your gut.”
Our gazes met.
My heart did a little flip.
“Portobello are the best, and you can never have too many mushrooms in the sauce.”
Angus pumped his fist in the air.
Justin rolled his eyes and sighed dramatically. With exaggerated motions, he went over to the fridge and pulled out a container of pre-cut mushrooms. Another sigh exploded from him as he dumped half the tray into the pot.
Angus clapped.
Anything. I’d do anything to make him smile again like that.
Justin held out a raw mushroom slice, and Angus nabbed it, shoving it into his mouth.
Okay, I loved mushrooms, but that was a little much, even for me.
As Angus struggled to swallow, Justin poured a glass of water from the sink. “Drink up, kiddo.”
He did. After several gulps, he put the glass down. “My dad fries them up in butter for me. Mom didn’t love them, but I sure do.” His shoulders slumped.
I met Justin’s gaze, and he nodded, knowing what I was asking. What I needed. I placed a tentative hand on my nephew’s shoulder. Unbelievably, he didn’t tense.
Instead, he sagged into the touch.
He was slight beneath my large hand. So delicate. Much like his father had been around that age. “You know, I don’t remember your dad liking mushrooms so much, but I do remember how much he loved swimming. We had a swimming pool, and he spent every day of summer vacation in the water.” I hadn’t, of course. I’d been too mature for frivolity.
Angus perked up. “I love swimming. I take lessons all the time over at the pool. My teacher is a nice lady named Quinn. She’s going to be a veter…a…”
“Veterinarian.” Justin said the word easily. He pointed to the dry pasta. “Do we break it in half?”
“Only little kids need their pasta short.” Angus jutted out his chin. “I’m not a little kid.”
“No, you’re not.”
Justin said the words quietly, but I caught the flicker of pain in his eyes. Angus would never be little again. What innocence that had been left was gone for good.
I held my hand against the boy, offering what comfort I could. I might be an adult, but I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.
There’s a fine line between protecting and stalking…
Blurb
An MM romance about life, love, family and beating the odds, especially when it involves a police officer and a dancer.
There’s a fine line between protecting and stalking...
Logan has unwavering loyalty to the law, and when he finds Bastien in a precarious situation, his protective instincts flare up to an all-time high. His need to help overshadows everything else, including his sense. Unfortunately, the dancer doesn't want his help.
What Bastien does for a living doesn't mean he has no morals. He has to live, and his wages and tips don't always cover everything. He's glad he doesn't have anyone who relies on him because he can barely make ends meet working all the hours of the day. When a so-called friend turns on him, who does he have left?
Can they put their differences aside and realise what is right in front of them?
Excerpt
“Taylor! Walker! You’re up!” their chief yelled from the door of his office. “Homicide.”
Logan grimaced but shoved away from his desk, checking that his phone and keys were in his pockets, then grabbed his coat from the back of his chair. They jogged down the cubicles and out of the station into the drizzle, carrying on until they reached Logan’s car. He peeled out of the car park and headed towards the address that Ava had immediately brought up on her phone.
“There’s not much information on here. Woman, late twenties, found on her living room floor. The neighbour looked through the window after the victim hadn’t opened the door for their appointment and saw her.”
“Wonderful.” Logan clenched his hands around the steering wheel and dropped his neck to the side, a crack easing the tension before repeating on the other side.
They raced their way through the streets until they reached the relevant house, then pulled up at the kerb. Both exited quickly, showing their badges to the police officers on the scene before heading up the path through the well-maintained garden of the detached bungalow. It wasn’t a house he would’ve expected a woman in her late-twenties to own unless it had been an inheritance, but he knew better than to stereotype.
Ducking under the top of the front door—his six-foot-two height unable to fit through otherwise—he headed to the living room, mindful of the low wooden beams dotted around the house.
The living room was comfortable and homely, if old-fashioned, which gave more precedent to the place being inherited. The blonde, slender woman lying on the floor with her clothes askew looked out of place in the room. Several police officers were hanging around, talking, while one of the photographers took photos of the body, the intermittent flashes doing nothing to help Logan’s headache.
His gaze examined the scene, not moving any closer to the body. After several minutes, something out of place caught his eye. “What do you see, Ava?”
Ava stepped to his side and didn’t answer, but he knew she was scanning the room. Her breath caught, and he knew she’d seen it. “Why does she have a kitchen knife in the living room?”
“Good question. Simon,” he said, getting the photographer’s attention, “Could you ensure you get pictures of the knife on top of the mantelpiece, please?”
His eyes widened as he lifted his head. “I didn’t even see that. Good catch.”
“Just doing my job,” he muttered distractedly, still studying their surroundings. “Officer?” The group of police officers turned towards him. “Could one of you give us the rundown?”
The older of the three stepped forward, crossing his arms over his chest. “The neighbour called it in when she came to collect the lady for their usual morning appointment. Apparently, they always go jogging at eleven, so when the lady didn’t answer, the neighbour was worried and checked through the window when she didn’t hear her coming to the door.”
“Does the lady have a name?”
“Sure.” The police officer pulled out his notebook and flicked through several pages before saying, “Miss Winona Conrad.”
Logan frowned. “Why does that name sound familiar? We’ve not got any cases with that name, have we?” He glanced at Ava, who shook her head. Staring back at the deceased, he tried to figure out where he’d heard her name before because he didn’t recognise her face. Unable to figure it out, he brushed it off and continued asking the officer questions, noting down his responses in his own notebook.
When he had enough information, he stepped closer, continuing his questioning but with the forensic pathologist. She wasn’t able to give him many details but enough for him to start gathering facts. It seemed Miss Conrad had been dead for approximately twelve hours.
“Thanks, Kat.”
He returned to Ava, who had disappeared into the kitchen. “We need to speak with the neighbour.”
Ava nodded and followed Logan to the front door. “Simon, could you please photograph the back door and the knife block in the kitchen. Thanks.” Logan raised his eyebrows. “The knife was one from the kitchen. There was a missing spot in the block, and the handles match.”
“So, the killer came through the back door, maybe?”
“That’s my guess.”
“Why?”
“There was a scrape on the back door as if it had been forced open using something sharp,” she answered.
“Good work.”
She beamed at him. “Thanks. You’ve taught me well.”
About the Author
I am Elouise East but feel free to call me Elli. I write sweet and steamy connections in gay romance. I also touch on taboo stories under the name Elouise R East.
Books that tell the stories where friendship and family are the focal point - be it blood family or chosen - is very important to me. That’s why I include a variety of personalities, talents, ages, situations and abilities as I believe a story needs, or a character needs. I want my characters to be real, to be relatable, to be free to have whatever views they tell me they have. And trust me, most of the time, I do not have any say in the matter!
My characters come to life on the page for me as well as my readers. Their stories unfold in front of me, and I have very little input into how they want to be shown. Just like real life, the lives of my characters change with every choice, every interaction and every conversation. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I write books that are emotionally realistic, even if liberties are taken with other aspects of my stories. I don’t know any other way to write. It comes from deep inside.
Who am I? A single parent to two children who make life worth living. An avid reader who still devours every book she can get her hands on. A student of learning about any subject that takes her fancy. An author of books she would read herself. And a romantic at heart who loves anything cheesy.
Lawful Attraction by Elouise East follows Detective Logan Taylor as he deals with the conundrum of the attractive exotic dancer known as Black while investigating frustrating and fatal stalking cases. Each man has a painful past that threatens to derail their budding relationship, but their incandescent attraction is hard to deny.
This adult gay contemporary romance is part of the ‘Crush’ series but can be read as a stand-alone story. There is a formidable list of characters at the beginning of the story, but fortunately they are integrated in as cameos and pique one’s interests about their individual times in the spotlight during previous books in the series.
Logan’s initial encounter with Black (Bastien) is definitely unconventional, and their ensuing encounters continue the pattern. I love Logan’s close-knit family and his dedication to his profession and particularly his acceptance of Bastien as he is. The counterpoint between their sizzling attraction and the frightening cases that touch both their lives is mesmerizing, and made the story a page-turner. I enjoyed getting to know these men, and I’m definitely interested in reading the previous stories in this series, since I suspect they’ll be just as entertaining as this tale.
