Haunted Ends 3: Disco Inferno by Elizabeth Price (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by author Elizabeth Price.

ELF:    What is one of your hobbies and how has it enriched your writing?

EP:  One of my favorite things is to research haunted locations. I especially love to visit haunted places. Over the past ten years, I’ve probably visited over a hundred haunted locations or at least locations that claim to be haunted. Every one of them had a fascinating story to tell about the history of the property. In many cases, like with hotels and restaurants, the people working for the establishments would gladly take time out to tell me all about their experiences. Most of the time, the ghostly encounters were harmless. In many cases, there’s a widow or prostitute involved — the young wife of a sea captain who dies of a broken heart and so on.

Some of my favorite stories involve wild west gunslingers. In December of 2020, I visited the grave of Big Nose Kate in Prescott, Arizona. She was the girlfriend of Doc Holliday back in the days of Wyatt Earp. Rumors claim the people have seen her ghostly image at her gravesite. When I visited her grave, there was a jar let with messages for her, unopened bottles of beer and wine, poker chips, and cash. Regardless if the rumors were true, it was amazing to see.

My favorite haunted hotel I visited was a boutique hotel in Ventura, California. I stumbled on it by accident while traveling to Santa Barbara. I didn’t know the hotel was haunted until I walked inside. I’m not even sure why I went inside… probably to find a restroom. Regardless, I started chatting with the man at the front desk, and he told me the story about a prostitute that smelled like roses and who would pinch men’s rumps as they walked up the stairs. She had hung herself in the late 1800s in one of the room’s closets. That experience lit my muse to write the Haunted Ends series.

The bronze statue of Juan Bautista de Anza greeted them as Rocky parked the car in the roundish parking lot. Rocky glanced at the statue, finding it rather odd to see a Spanish conquistador riding through the park, perched on a beautiful stone horse.

Man on a horse? he thought. Surely not. The statue wasn’t there the last time he visited… though it had been a long time.

As he turned to the statue, the statue’s head turned to him, winked then returned to normal. Rocky felt the expression fall from his face.

“You see that?” he gulped. “Dude…” he waved his hand towards the backseat to gain Sam’s attention even though he wasn’t looking at Sam. His hand sliced directly through Sam’s stomach, causing his image to waver slightly.

“What?” Sam muttered.

Rocky jumped out of his car, pointing to the statue. “That! That statue winked at me!” he proclaimed in front of a large group of school children on a field trip. The children all giggled at the madman as their teachers hurried them away from the area.

Sam floated from the car and over to the statue. “Oh, him? Yeah. He’s our eyewitness. Come on, let me introduce you—”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Elizabeth grew up in Redlands, California as an only child. The lack of siblings, cousins, or even kids in her neighborhood to play with sparked her imagination to life. She spent most days entertaining herself with elaborate stories, even doing so when her attention should have been elsewhere—like on her schoolwork.

As a teen, Elizabeth dove headfirst into the geeky culture of Star Trek and other science fiction and fantasy novels. She became so consumed that she spent all her free time and allowance on new books—eagerly anticipating their arrival. When she felt hindered by her limited allowance and the inevitable waiting period between new releases, it dawned on Elizabeth to revisit the creation of her own stories. This is where she was truly born as an author, pouring her imagination into multiple genres.

In 2009, Elizabeth graduated from California State University Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in Communications, emphasizing Entertainment Studies. She has taken numerous writing classes to hone her craft—everything from script writing to copywriting, story writing and more.

Elizabeth has been happily married to her supportive husband since 2001. He greatly encourages her in her writing endeavors and accompanies her on trips to haunted locations—her favorite pastime. She currently lives with her husband in Corona, California.

The Fairyland Murders by J.A. Kazimer (VBB, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) GFT

The Fairyland Murders
by J.A. Kazimer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Blue Reynolds knows the darker side of New Never City--the side that's hopped-up on fairy dust and doesn't care if your house gets blown down. Rent's due and his PI business is all but make believe. But even Blue shudders at having to chase after Isabella Davis, a freckle-nosed redhead five feet tall on her tip-toes...if you don't count the pretty pink wings.
Izzy is tough, and sneaky, and not too thrilled with the idea of being the new tooth fairy. The last six have been most gruesomely extracted. But Blue has a feeling that whoever is killing the tooth fairies is worse than your standard big bad psycho. The fairy council is hiding something. The Shadows are moving out into the light. And Blue is saddled with a shocking power that could take out half of New Never City...
Chapter 1
Of all the fey PI firms, in all the kingdoms, in all the lands, these twin hairless fairies had to walk into mine.
Of course I knew why they were here.
“My rent’s not due for two days,” I said, propping my feet on top of my worn desk. It groaned under the weight. Not that another forty-eight hours would matter in the scheme of things. I’d still be a few hundred short of meeting my monthly office space rent.
The PI biz wasn’t what it used to be.
And it used to be pretty damn bad.
Hell, I only had one case in the last month and I’d yet to see a penny from it. Of course, I hadn’t quite solved it either. But I would. Blue Reynolds, PI, always gets the job done. Eventually.
"Blue,” Peyton, the taller of the two fairies, said as he hefted his tiny pants. They rose an inch, showing off a pair of green and white kids’ socks. “We ain’t here for the rent. We want you to do a job for us.”
I leaned back further in my chair. “Nope.”
Frowning, Peyton consulted with his twin brother, Clayton, in a hushed whisper. They argued for a second, finally nodding in apparent agreement before facing me again. In unison they shot me equally creepy and earnest smiles.
A lesser man might’ve found their pixie-shaped faces and wistful plea cute. Not me. I’d dealt with fairies too many times to fall for their adorable act. In general, fairies were winged devils; these two were in particular.
“Please,” they said. “For us?”
Again I shook my head. This time with greater emphasis, so much so that the bones in my neck popped. I tilted my head back and forth working out the kinks as the twins regrouped.
“Come on, Blue,” said Clayton, the shorter brother. Shorter was relative since neither he nor his twin stood more than two feet tall. “It’ll be a piece of cake.”
“You said that about the last job.” I kicked off my combat boot and wiggled four toes through the hole in my sock. “I still haven’t found my toe.”
Peyton winced, but Clayton, true to his demonic nature, giggled. “Guess he didn’t go running wee wee wee all the way home like we figured.”
Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens (Review)
Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens is the sequel to the imaginative Ghost Seer and continues the adventures of Clare Cermak, who is still coming to terms with the inheritance from her late aunt, both materially and psychically. She is also adjusting to having Zach Slade in her life, while he struggles to deal with both her power and his own admitted as well as unacknowledged issues. They are both hired by Rickman Security and Investigations to deal with the ghost of J. Dawson Hidgepath, who is plaguing multimillionaire Dennis Laurentine, but the assignment turns out to be more dangerous than anticipated and Clare will need the support and assistance of both Zach and her guide, the phantom dog Enzo with his intermittent ‘Other’ knowledge, if she is going to survive to grow into her psychic gift.
This entertaining paranormal tale combines an intriguing mystery that gives new meaning to the term ‘cold case’ with a spine-chilling twist of having a ghost provide many of the pertinent clues. The effervescent ghost labrador, Enzo, does his best to facilitate Clare’s progress in assisting needy ghosts but he also has rules he is circumscribed by which affect his interactions, so it is fun to watch him be a dog, a liaison for the ghosts requiring help, and a conduit for the ‘Other’ who has a definite agenda for Clare. The connection that has formed between Clare and Zach has its ups and downs, which adds to the realism of a developing relationship. There are both fascinating revelations about what Clare and Enzo are able to do as well as an interesting change in Zach’s attitude about his shortcomings and abilities. What a creative series that gives a different twist on the concept of ghosts and haunting, especially for a self-admitted chicken such as myself who isn’t terribly fond of scary ghosts. These tales combine humor, paranormal elements, and romance in a winning combination. I look forward to many more stories from this version of the world, especially as both Clare and Zach become comfortable in their respective roles and with one another, not to mention the warm fuzzy feeling that a dog can supply...even if he is incorporeal!
