The Secret Heiress by Susie Warren (excerpt, review and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by Susie Warren

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Raised by a single mother in London, Anna Harris was surprised to find out her father was the business mogul, Oliver Bolles. Deciding to follow in his footsteps, she used her brilliant ability with numbers to secure a sought after position in a London brokerage house. Disillusioned by the lack of integrity, Anna decides to seek a more fulfilling career and unknowingly throws herself into the path of an old obsession, Alistair Martin. Finding it difficult to endure the emotional scars of being abandoned by her father and then taken advantage of by a devious boyfriend, Anna avoids serious relationships until she is challenged to do something she has never done.

Alistair Martin is a hot, obscenely wealthy vineyard owner with a razor sharp business mind who pursues Anna out of curiosity and decides to invest into her failing events management company. He was raised in poverty until he was a teenager and his father’s family brought him into the fold. Anna is not what he expects and he has to change his game plan if he hopes to convince the secret heiress to let down her guard enough to leap into a wild affair.

Alistair Martin walked into the pub and his eyes were drawn to a beautiful blond girl drinking a Guinness. Dressed in tight fitting jeans and black boots, her charming laugh and graceful body set off a rapid fire urge to approach her. It was ridiculous; he had never set eyes on her before. How could he possibly be drawn to her?

He turned his attention back to the pub. He was doing a surprise walk through of his flagship microbrewery. It was his most lucrative pub. Observing the wait staff, he could tell they were trying to warn each other. His expectations were high but open-minded and he had a reputation for an over the top work ethic and a razor sharp wit.

His attention turned back to the group of investment bankers out for an after work drink. The woman was in her mid-twenties and seemed to keep up with the conversation and took an occasional sip of ale.

Why was he enthralled by this particular beauty in sexy jeans? Alistair stayed motionless as she turned and placed her empty bottle on the table and waved to the group. She walked straight toward him and he had the odd feeling that they had met before.

She had a beautiful body that was both feminine and sleek. Her face had a trace of makeup but she wore no jewelry. Their eyes met and she hesitated for a split second.

She nodded in acknowledgement. “Mr. Martin, it’s lovely to see you again.”

Why couldn’t he place her? He couldn’t imagine bedding her and not remembering the encounter. His body reacted swiftly to her nearness.

“I can’t think of how we know each other.” He looked into the crowd, trying to cool his reaction. Could she be an employee in one of his establishments?

“It’s not a big deal. We met ages ago at a gathering.” She was inching away from him and he could see the manager of the brewery in the distance trying to tactfully get his attention.

He reached out and touched her arm. “Care to refresh my memory?”

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

The Secret Heiress by Susie Warren is part of the “Bolles Dynasty” series and follows Anna Bolles, a driven investment broker, who makes a radical career change.  Her decision to join an events planning company is fraught with risks, including the business’ lack of solvency, which brings her into contact with the one man she’s had an obsession with, ever since he rejected her.  Alistair Martin is a very successful businessman in England, but it will take all of his skills to get Anna to take his business advice as well as accept his personal requirements.  Unfortunately, Anna has plenty of emotional scars as well as a very stubborn streak, and may not be able to accept anything from Alistair, no matter what he promises, and he has plenty of scars of his own that keep him from promising the one thing Anna may be willing to accept.

This story is an adult contemporary romance that gives an intriguing glimpse of life in London on several levels.  I was a little startled to think of prosperous vineyards in England, as that is a product that I don’t typically associate with that country, and there is a nice contrast between the cutthroat business environment that Anna flees, and the challenges of starting a new career in a vocation that is relatively new to her.  I didn’t think she had done a good job of researching the company she was joining, which seemed a bit contradictory, given her business and mathematic acumen, but I suppose her struggles are required for the storyline.

I liked these characters and ached at the betrayals that have formed Anna’s character, but the two of them frustrated me as well.  Their chemistry is sizzling, but their seesawing relationship was annoying and it took far too long for the air to clear, as far as I was concerned.  It also would have been nice to get a little more depth to the secondary characters, especially since this is part of a series, and undoubtedly some of them will figure in subsequent stories.  I’m also a little puzzled by the title, because everyone seems to know Anna’s last name and connect it with her famous father.  Despite all of this, I feel that this is a lovely light read, with plenty of passion and emotion leading up to a satisfying conclusion.

Her head was down, her eyes focused on where she was putting her feet. She wasn’t concentrating. Suddenly a hand was over her mouth and her windpipe felt like it was being crushed by an iron bar.

She went into autopilot mode, going completely limp. The additional weight, her group had been told during self-defense training, might knock an assailant off balance, potentially giving the victim a chance to flee. Unfortunately it didn’t quite work that way in practice. Suspended by the arm of her attacker, she felt as if she were being slowly and inexorably strangled. Desperate to relieve the pressure, she scrambled to find her footing.

“I would advise against that.” The voice was soft against her ear, and she remembered something else she’d been told. Try to pinpoint things that will make it easy to recognize her assailant later. Even speech patterns.

She was clawing at both his hand and his arm, twisting and trying to free herself.
“I’m choking,” she croaked through his fingers. It wasn’t strictly true. His hold had already eased a little.

“No, you’re not,” he said. “Will you keep still?”

She made an attempt at nodding.

“Okay. Here’s the rule. There’s only one, so it shouldn’t be too hard to remember.”
Cassie nodded again.

“Don’t move, and that includes trying to turn around.”
She nodded for a third time.

“Good. Just so long as we understand each other.”

The pressure relaxed further. More to the point, the hand over her mouth was gone and she filled her lungs gratefully. “Okay, okay.”

“Keep facing front.”

“Who are you?”

“Just someone passing through.”

She was trying to concentrate, to remember what she had to do, both as part of her job and if things were as bad as they seemed, to stay alive.

“Good guy or bad guy?”

“Depends on whose side you’re on.”

“Military?”

His reaction was almost imperceptible. Had she not been forced up against him she’d never have noticed. So she was right. She tried again.

“Afghanistan?”

“Among other places.”

This might not be good. She doubted his time in the army had been spent behind a desk. He was too assertive for that. Plus, he was fit; the muscles of his arm told her that. Hard and unyielding, this guy had been frontline.

Her throat was aching, and she swallowed. “Any chance of a little civilized behavior here?”

“What do you suggest?”

“That you take away your arm altogether.”

“I’d have to trust you to do that.”

“So trust away.”

He laughed. It was a deep, bass sound, and not unpleasant.

“Here’s the deal,” he suggested. “I’ll remove my arm if you agree to stand perfectly still while we engage in a spot of conversation.”

“Okay.”

“I’m taking you at your word—the word of a serving police officer.”

Interesting! He must have been watching her yesterday. So why hadn’t he already moved on?

My reviews:

The Outsider

3.5 out of 5 stars

The Outsider by Galia Ryan is an erotic novella that portrays the events that unfold after Cassie Jonsson, the only female deputy in town, investigates the derelict farm she once played in as a child.  A chance encounter with a stranger draws her into an erotic interlude that seduces more than her body—it threatens her very career, and forces her to take a good look at her life and future.

This gently unfolding tale gives a picture of a woman who is frustrated with the sexism rampant in her workplace and vaguely dissatisfied with both her professional and personal lives.  The carnal interludes that tempt her to discard all that she has been striving for are certainly sizzling but I was a bit taken aback by her decidedly risky behavior and cavalier decisions, although it seems that she is already engaging in less than stellar behavior, both professionally and privately.

The author’s style is poetic and flowing, and I enjoyed her descriptive phrases, but I was not convinced by the instant connection between the characters or that the intensity of this relationship should have had such a radical effect on the heroine’s actions.  I think the story is more of a teaser and designed to evoke a ‘what if’ reaction to a tale that is more fantasy than realism.

Alice After Hours

3.75 out of 5 stars

Alice After Hours is an erotic novella that follows a woman workaholic in London who tentatively explores a Dominance/submission forum with disdain, only to be seduced into trying the lifestyle for herself.

I thought that this story did a very nice job of depicting the gradual foray into a foreign world that challenges the heroine’s preconceptions and expands her sexual horizons.  The sensual assault and gradual introduction to power exchange, uncomplicated by a focus on BDSM, is artfully described and the reader is drawn along on this woman’s journey.  As with the other story I have read by this author, I enjoyed the smoothly flowing prose and the nicely evoked atmosphere, but I am vaguely unsatisfied by the ending and consider it a ‘happy for now’ situation, so I hope that these characters are revisited at some point.  Nonetheless, this is definitely a very sensual story about one woman’s seduction into the submissive lifestyle.

Blood in Her Veins by Faith Hunter (spotlight, excerpt and GIVEAWAYS!)

SHILOH AND THE BRICK  (Copyright held by Faith Hunter)
Part Four
I dove for Molly and wrapped her in my arms, making a cage of my limbs as I spun across the floor and under a table, taking the weight and force of the rolling dive onto my body, on elbows and knees and spine. My braid, down and loose, caught under us and I yanked it free. “Stay put.” I growled at her. My Beast was close to the surface, her cat-voice rough and coarse.
From the back of the house I heard the sound of a shotgun breach closing. The blood-servants were on the way. That left the missile up to me. I tossed my braid and shifted my roll to the thing that had been thrown inside.
Glass was still flying through the room as Beast shoved me across the floor. Seeing it as I reached out for it. A brick. With a note tied on. For freaking crap’s sake.
I grabbed the brick and checked it with more senses—touch (no explosives), smell (no explosives), sight (no explosives). Just a brick with a note, folded over, a name on the outside. Tied with a neat bow of twine. I stood, seeing a hedge of thorns witch ward lifting around the house. Evan had whistled it up in seconds flat. Pretty nifty, that.
The blood-servants stood at the doorway, a man with a shotgun leveled at me. The others with knives and a nine-millimeter and a tiny .380. All aimed at me. I set the brick down on the floor and stood. Held up my hands, trying for innocent, but that was hard for a six-foot-tall Cherokee chick so weaponed up that I looked like a walking arsenal. “Not me,” I said. And then I chuffed, cat-like laughter. “I come in peace.”
The man gave his shotgun to the blood-servant nearest, and walked, slowly, to where Shiloh cowered, vamped-out, inch-long needle fangs and sharp-as-steel talons out. She hissed at me as her witch powers gathered around her. Okay. This was bad.
To my side, Evan Trueblood was already whistling up a defensive spell to stop his niece.

4.75 out of 5 stars

Blood in Her Veins: Nineteen Stories from the World of Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter is a collection of paranormal urban fantasy short stories and novellas. Ranging from the early 19th century to more modern times, these tales give an overview of the progression of Jane the skinwalker’s life and development of her powers in snapshots that tie together the stories portrayed in the books of this series.  There are glimpses of the beings that have had profound influences on her journey, including her ups and downs at forming connections with others who are acceptable to both her and Beast, particularly the Everhart family.  Some of the folks who have ostensibly been secondary characters get their own time in the spotlight, particularly one very precocious witch-child who threatens to turn the world on its ear, just the way she upsets all of the plans of the adults around her.  There is a plethora of details about vampires, the problem of were-taint, the struggle to form a useful council to deal with vampire-witch relations, and the ever-evolving details about the mysterious Anzu.  Also introduced is a character (Nell) who is about to star in her own series who has indeed been “Off the Grid”.

One of the joys of reading stories by this author is the sheer immensity of details that she provides, with lots of unexpected twists and turns.  I’m always hungry after reading about the delicious meals they are consuming (although I draw the line at cold oatmeal and probably at the fried gator, lol) which add such realism to the stories.  I was grateful that there were little pockets of peace described while the various characters consumed their edibles, because the stories provide an experience that is like a strobe-lit picture of Jane’s evolution over the years, jampacked with pivotal struggles.

I fear that this book has plenty of spoilers for those who haven’t been keeping up with the series, but it is a great overview.  Those who are squeamish should be forewarned that there is plenty of violence and death depicted (and ew, leaving a piece of one’s liver on a branch!), and it is awe-inspiring to watch the way the author provides such depth and texture to change the one views the paranormal creatures populating this series.  There are moments of levity to give one a quick respite from the occasionally very heart-wrenching struggles, but one never forgets what a kickass combination this motorcycle-riding female is, nor how unique and powerful a relationship she and Beast have.  This is an enthralling and exciting collection of tales that is sure to delight fans of the series and seduce plenty of new readers into falling under the spell of this fantastic author.

A Jar of Dreams by Clarissa Cartham (VNBtM, guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY) GFT

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post from author Clarissa Cartham, who shares her musings on...

REJECTION- A WRITER’S NIGHTMARE

 by Clarissa Cartham

One of the first quotes I memorized as I was growing up was “No man is an island,” by John Donne. Essentially, it means that no one is self-sufficient and at some point one has to depend on others for survival.

However, I did come to realize that acceptance was just as much a crucial aspect of social survival, and perhaps now more prevalent than ever. In a digital world and a global network of community, people are tending to find their esteem in the number of friends they have on Facebook or followers on their Twitter and Instagram accounts. A high number indicates better popularity and hence the more satisfying feeling of acceptance.

In the world of writers, we generally get out boost of esteem from good reviews. However, it is the bad reviews which are often the topic of debate amongst writers and much has been delved and discussed on how one should handle this form of rejection.

When I first stepped foot in the publishing world, my first reviews were fortunately raving and this primed me up well and ready for the bad reviews that were to come. And sure enough, they did. I, of course had prepared myself for rejection by meditating on the belief that I could never please everyone. But what did shock me was the hurt that dug deep into my heart as if someone had physically stabbed me. I would read and re-read the bad review that haunted me for days. No longer did I care for the ten or so good reviews and neither did they compare to that sole one star review. That torment filled weeks, I sought therapy by reading through the many advices established authors had to say about bad reviews. But nothing pleased me more than discovering renowned and celebrity authors were also not spared from the scathing reviews of displeased readers. It only takes a quick search on Amazon to find bestsellers riddled with bad reviews such as these:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This is the worst book I've read in a long time. A complete waste of time. I am still trying to figure out what the point was. No moral compass, no reason for the games to exist, the so-called love interest wasn't interesting. A good basic idea for a book squandered, instead it is really only a computer game on paper. Thank goodness it only took me 4 days to read. This book is aimed at teenagers but due to its graphic nature and complete disregard for humanity, only adults should read this book, but few would if they knew what was in store for them.

SO I SUPPOSE THE POINT OF THIS BOOK IS THAT PEOPLE WHO WEAR TURBANS ARE EVIL??? THERE ARE NO MINORITIES IN THE BOOK AND HARRY "THE WHITE BOY" POTTER SAVES THE DAY THIS BOOK IS RACIST AND SHOULD BE CONDEMNED BUT NO PEOPLE READ AND THE ONLY GIRL IN THE STORY IS PORTRAYED AS A NERDY BOOKWORM SIDEKICK BUTT KISSER REAL GOOD PORTRAYAL OF WOMEN WASNT IT WRITTEN BY A WOMAN??? THIS BOOK IS STUPID AND RACIST AND DONT BUY IT

And yes, it was capslocked in its entirety.

Of course today, I no longer sulk over that bad review. Instead I seek solace in the many good reviews I get. But above all, I have learned that reviews are merely opinions and are subjective to the reader’s experience. If, in case I did need an educated critique of my work, I forward my writings to an appropriate professional who can provide me a valid and literary assessment which would ultimately benefit my skills as a writer.

Finally, my publishing experience has not only made me more resilient but also more accepting of all kinds of readers. I believe that no person is a writer without his/her readers- readers who are like beacons, guiding us writers on our course as we navigate through the different stories we narrate.

The bus drifted back slowly on its route, leaving an odor of its exhaust fumes behind it.

“Well, I would say I’d see you again, but I can’t.” Anne smiled.

“Excuse me,” he stammered.

“I was teasing,” she explained. “You know, I’m blind if you hadn’t noticed.”

“Right… yeah,” he said awkwardly.

She played with the head of her cane, supposedly feeling just as awkward.

“Well, goodbye then,” she said and turned around to walk away.

He floundered back and forth. Who was he kidding? He wasn’t ready to just let her walk away. It surprised him that even after fifteen years, she continued to make his heart pound like she did the first time he had seen her. He had thought he was well over her. After all, he had indulged in several relationships after her, no longer the shy teen afraid to ask a girl out for a date. He became widely known as a Don Juan, and he savored the popularity and gifts the women showered upon him. That was until someone handed him a gun and challenged him to shoot an empty can placed fifty paces away. It was then that he found a new obsession and every other passion paled before it. At least, he had thought it had. He stared after Anne helplessly.

“Wait,” he called out to her.
