SEDUCING SENSEI

Excerpt 3

Being this close to Kai brought out all the bad memories, the pain, the trip to the hospital, the heartache, rejection, betrayal. Really, could I call him a friend? I hadn’t in a long time.

“Are you all right?” He said. But there was no concern in his eyes. Only his stubborn poker face.

I regained my balance and tried to push him away as forcefully as I could. He might as well be bolted to the ground. He didn’t even move under my hand. It was me who stumbled away. This time he didn’t motion to grab me. Thankfully I didn’t trip this time.

My body went numb. My mind went blank. My only urge was to run, flee, escape. The body shakes returned in force. There was no Itsuma to hold me this time.

“If this is how you act around me, what is the point?” He said.

“You were supposed to meet me at the grill.” I tried holding myself to put back the pieces of my failing courage.

Kai stepped into my house and shut the front door. “I would rather speak in private. I have something personal to say.”

Fucking Kai—doing whatever he pleased. He hadn’t changed. We stared at each other. Kai looked the same as he had five years ago. His black hair still shined. His short locks waved and shifted whenever he moved like a damn shampoo commercial. Those golden eyes still pierced with a laser focus that seemed to be able to physically push people away. Narrow chin, slight nose and a perfect complexion made him devilishly handsome. Operative word being devilish. But that face wouldn’t fool me anymore.

“So I have a favor,” I said.

“What? No how is life? How have you been? What is new?” Kai folded his arms as if he had a right to be pissed.

“Fuck you, you god damn asshole! You’re five fucking years too late. Go to hell!” I screamed my head off. Wetness trickled down my face. Shit. I couldn’t look at him. Not like this.

“Communication runs both ways.”

My head snapped up. “Communication? Well then you’re the worst listener ever.”

Kai breathed a sigh of relief.

My trembling became a source of energy. The energy enough to punch him in the face. “No you don’t get to come here and find resolution fucktard. You used me like a god damn toilet...” my knees wobbled. I caught myself and leaned against the back of my couch. Oh god, why did I call him?

Flashes of memory came rolling in. Six years of trying to forget him and what he did came rolling back like it was yesterday. Kai staring at me like he’d never seen blood in his whole life. The hospital. The nightmares. Watching him sling an arm around a girl, ignoring me as they passed. The pain of rejection when I needed answers and he wouldn’t return my calls.

His voiced snapped me back into the present. “Granted, I probably deserve your ire—”

“Probably?” I screamed like a woman who’d been cheated on. “Ire? No, you son-bitch, there’s no probably about it. What you did doesn’t just cause ire fuck face.”

“You always did have a flare for theatrics.”

EXCERPT

The delicate paper menu held only a few choices, and my eyes widened at the prices. I should have thought to ask where we were going before I agreed. I didn’t have the money to spend so much on dinner, especially since Peter had moved out and money was much tighter. My heart thudded in my chest as I quickly scanned for the cheapest item on the menu; even the side salad was nearly fifteen dollars. How do people afford this? Well, the salad comes with bread and a bowl of soup, so at least it should be enough to fill me up.

The waiter, clad in a white dress shirt and perfectly pressed black pants, appeared just as I laid the menu down. “Have we had enough time?” he asked politely, glancing at each of us before focusing his attention on Philip, who took the lead in ordering.

“Yes, we’ll have two glasses of your finest red wine and two plates of the steak and lobster, grilled medium well.” He handed his and Raquel’s menus to the waiter.

“Very well,” the waiter nodded and turned his attention to me.

I swallowed. “Um, I’ll have the side salad and the tomato soup.”

The waiter cocked his head. “Will that be all miss?”

My face flushed, and just as I was about to answer, Henry jumped in. “Yes, and the same for me please.” He handed our menus to the waiter.

The waiter nodded. “Yes, sir, and anything further to drink?”

Henry glanced at me; I shook my head. “No, water will be adequate for now, thank you.”

As the waiter turned away, I regarded Henry. Who was this man, and why was he being so nice to me? He caught me staring and shot me a small wink as he picked up a piece of bread.

Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, North San Diego (review)

Torrey Pine

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

Last fall, we had the misfortune to deal with a minor emergency at the Radisson hotel in Fresno, and I swore I would never (knowingly) stay at a hotel from this chain again, since they didn't even bother to address my complaint. So, imagine my surprise to check-in at the Country Inn & Suites by Carlson when we went to San Diego and discover...you guessed it...Radisson is part of their network! Sigh, it's tough to vote with your hard-earned dollars when you don't have full disclosure, but wading through all of the information requires fortitude and more research than I care to do when I am looking for a bargain, lol. However, I would have been doing this place a disservice, because I was very pleasantly surprised by their atmosphere and service.

The first lovely amenity I noticed as we walked into the lobby was a pair of shiny metal dog dishes with water...at two different heights! What a nice touch and a unique way of indicating this is a pet-friendly hotel. I noticed the bowls at an additional exit, so they definitely are welcoming to their four-footed guests.

The check-in desk not only has a couple of complimentary newspapers to choose from, but there was also a cookie station! Otis Spunkmeyer cookies in several varieties were in a little display case along with the makings for coffee or tea. What a lovely touch, especially for those who need a quick pick-me-up.

The room was fine, it looked and smelled clean, and we were fine with it being our temporary home away from home for a few days, particularly once we got the thermostat to actually work! There's a Chili's restaurant within walking distance, so we were set until we found the other local restaurants. A complimentary breakfast was included with the room which also had a small refrigerator (with an odd set of buttons so it would have been nice to have an instruction manual) which managed to keep our sodas cold, as well as a microwave. The downside, although I suppose it is a luxury, was the down-filled pillows. That is lovely--if you don't have a spouse who is allergic to the feathers! There were substitutes in the closet, but silly me, when I felt them, they didn't feel much different from the down-filled ones, so I was nervous about using them. I am sure we confused the maid the next morning with our request for new ones, when all I should have done was remove the double pillowcases and looked for the label. Sigh, live and learn.

I was tempted to try out the bathtub, now that California is not so strapped for water, but alas, I think we are still discouraged from taking a bath since I couldn't find a way to stop up the tub. Oh, well.

Of course, we didn't need much in the way of amenities since we were doing the tourist tour during the day, but it was a little disconcerting to have a screaming neighbor...who sounded off in the early morning, and early evening the next day. Next time I will try to be more proactive and call the desk instead of putting the pillow over my head or turning the TV up, lol.

The best element of all? There was a little alcove on the way to the elevator...with...surprise! A lending library! Now, I'm always an ardent supporter of anything that promotes reading, and discovering a collection of books with a variety of books for all ages and tastes was such a wonderful discovery. (I discovered I have gotten really behind with the Rita Mae Brown 'Sneaky Pie' series, lol)
It's called the Read, Relax, & Return program and features books from Penguin Random House. You are encouraged to borrow a book, and if you aren't done with it by the time you check out, you are welcome to take it with you and return it to any hotel in the chain. Now, I suspect I will have to mail mine back, because I don't think I am that close to a Country Inn...although I might call the Radisson near my alma mater and see if I can return it there.

So...this hotel definitely gets my stamp of approval!

Alien Nation by Gini Koch (Spotlight and review)

Alien Nation

by

Gini Koch

Blurb:

Sci-fi action meets steamy paranormal in Gini Koch’s Alien novels, as Katherine “Kitty” Katt faces off against aliens, conspiracies, and deadly secrets. • “Futuristic high-jinks and gripping adventure.” —RT Reviews

It’s a typical day of bureaucracy and stress for President and First Lady Jeff and Kitty Katt-Martini, made more stressful when alien spacecraft are spotted making a beeline for Earth, none of them from the Alpha Centauri system.

Then a cryptic request from an old adversary pulls Kitty out of the White House and into an explosion—and an even more explosive situation. Not only is the Mastermind back in the game, influencing the Club 51 True Believers to find and destroy all Centaurion bases, but he’s also found a dangerous benefactor and created some frightening new cloning abilities.

And, just to make things a little more challenging, those alien spacecraft are coming to ask Kitty for protection, and asylum on Earth. Police stations being blown up and war helicopters in play aren’t enoughto keep Kitty down, especially when she’s got some new alien friends helping out.

But what these aliens share will rock the world—the other aliens on theirway to Earth are fleeing an enemy so terrifying that even a Z’porrah ship is trying to get to Earth for safety and protection. And if Earth isn’t able to stop this threat, there may not be anything left of humanity.

Now Kitty and Company have to figure out where the Mastermind is and stop him, before any new aliens land. And then they have to save the world from a deadly invasion. Or, as Kitty calls it, Thursday.

My review:

4.75 out of 5 stars

-->
Alien Nation by Gini Koch is part of the genre-twisting ‘Alien’ series, this story combines science fiction, fantasy, paranormal romance, and adventure elements into another suspenseful tale as mostly human Katherine (Kitty) Katt-Martini and her hunky Alpha Centauri hubby Jeff marshal friends, family and allies to deal with an alien invasion that is fleeing an horrific menace that will literally change every being it comes into contact with. Finding a way to cozy up to those who definitely look different from what she is used to will be only one thing that Kitty needs to conquer but she’s never backed down from a challenge yet and she is definitely not going to start now…when EVERYONE’s life is at stake.

This book features another delightful and exciting adventure with First Lady Kitty Katt-Martini and the rest of the larger-than-life folks in her circle. The FLOTUS is learning the ‘power of the paw’ in addition to a few other perks of the office, but the crises are still arriving fast and furious, and problems are increasing astronomically. With her usual inimitable style and aplomb, Kitty kicks butt with enthusiasm accompanied by an impressive playlist that represent not-so-subtle clues from one of her allies, working around constraints imposed.

It’s always amazing to me how this author can address current issues with such flair and provide a wondrously entertaining story with her portrait of the dangers of bigotry and the importance of acceptance and appreciation for the contributions that can be made by those who are very different from us. I am always vastly entertained by the creatures who populate these stories, and wow, the images of the Turleens swooping around doing their Gamera imitation while helping Kitty save the day had me laughing out loud. The amazing thing about Gini’s stories is that they are SO outlandish and chock-full of pop culture references and musical clues that one can spend hours captivated by the imagery. Add in an exciting story…who can help being nervous when the BAD GUYS are FLEEING something…plus a few puzzles (like who is Patricia and what did she do to be featured as such a horrible alien race, lol), cameos by some of one’s favorite characters, and the ongoing love affair between the main characters, and one can disappear into one of these hefty books for days.

Those who are unfamiliar with the series should definitely start at the beginning (one of these days, these thick books need to be made even thicker by a list of characters to help us keep track of who’s who) but be advised that only those who love sarcastic wit and wonderfully exciting larger-than-life adventures will appreciate these comic-book-on-steroids tomes that combine humor, self-honesty, loyalty, and the excitement of an ongoing struggle for identity in a world that is getting smaller but no less important in terms of the universe. I have to wonder how the author is able to keep raising the bar in her ability to combine wacky with relevant but I definitely appreciate her talents and look forward to more tales in this fantastic series even though it apparently has a planned endpoint that is rapidly approaching.

A copy of this title was provided to me for review, a version of which was submitted to Night Owl Reviews

And...to show how far behind I am...the sequel has just released! I am looking forward to reading it...but unfortunately there are (quite) a few in line ahead of it, drat!

“Okay, the blue shirt with the gray slacks doesn’t make you look as stiff and lawyerly-looking as the white shirt does,” Marlene said. “Too bad you don’t have any softer-colored shirts.” She dangled three other ties in her hand she had brought along with her.

Rich glowered at her. “Lawyerly-looking? Softer colored? Are they even words? All I want to do is not look like an affluent stuffy lawyer with a stick up—”

He stopped and looked over at his small daughter, then continued in an irritated voice. “I want to look dressy, but not straitlaced or smug. You know what I mean.”

“But you are a stuffy lawyer, and it’s no secret your bank accounts won’t bounce, you dolt,” Lulu said with a huff. “I thought you and Torrie were going out as friends.”

He looked at the elderly housekeeper. “We are. But I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable, and I want to feel casual, but well-dressed.”  He picked up a blue and white striped tie and held it to his chest. All three females groaned. He chose a darker blue one and the groans grew louder. He glared at them. “I’ll have you know some of these ties are pure Italian silk and cost a fortune. To some people, neckties are a symbol of success and authority.”

“Then send them back to Rome and let the Pope bury the lifeless-looking things.” Lulu rose. “They look like they should be on a corpse.”

Rich looked at Marlene. “Can you believe I’m paying her to insult me?”

Lulu snorted. “No, Perry Mason, you’re paying me to feed you, do your laundry, and oversee the household. The advice is free.” She headed for the door. “I’m going home, kids. See you in the morning.”

“I can’t wait,” Rich muttered and followed it with a dismal shake of his head.

Lulu paused and offered him a don’t-you-dare-tangle-with-me stare, then looked at Estella with a tender, warm, grandmotherly smile. “Your daddy doesn’t realize the only reason I take his grief is because I love to be with you, doll face. Tomorrow we’re making brownies and Perry Mason here is getting zip, zero, none, nichts, nada.” She headed out the door.

“Stop calling me Perry Mason!” Rich shouted at her retreating back. He heard her cackling laugh as she hustled toward the stairs.

“Okay, Sunshine.”

Haunted Blade (A Kit Colbana Novel) by J.C. Daniels COVER REVEAL

A Kit Colbana Novel
By J.C. Daniels
About the Book:
Haunted, Hunted…and harassed.

Never let it be said that Kit Colbana had ever been given the easy road. Or even the semi-paved road.  Only weeks after dealing with the mysterious—and murderous—being called Puck, she’s got another killer on her hands. Perhaps even two.
Some of the bodies turning up bring up haunting memories of a past she longs to forget, but as always, that past is chasing her at her heels, like a hated shadow.

As the body count racks up, there’s an imbalance of power, particularly among the vampire population and Kit must yet again deal with ugly memories as one of the monsters who tried to break her is set free to deal with the imbalance of power.
Yet while a power struggle rages in East Orlando, there’s another, more subtle battle taking place and Kit feels like the center of it all.

Arrogant? Maybe. But the dead bodies don’t bear the mark of her grandmother’s pet killer by sheer coincidence…and she doubts her nemesis being released is either.

Releasing in September.
