Glow by Beth Kery (review) and contest reminders (updated 12/21)

Glow by Beth Kery is the exciting sequel to the story depicted in “Glimmer” and continues to follow Alice Reed, a counselor for Camp Durand who has risen above her humble beginnings as a methamphetamine manufacturer’s daughter. Her searingly carnal relationship with Dylan Fall, the head of Durand Enterprises, continues to evolve, as does the shift in her attitude about the facts that are gradually being revealed about her history. Unfortunately, as Alice begins to accept that some of the memories she is uncovering may be proof that an age-old mystery is going to be solved, evidence also begins to mount that the danger that Dylan has been trying to warn her about may also be very real and she will have to discover who she can truly trust with her heart and her well-being.

There is nothing I like more than a captivating story that combines a sensual and arousing romance and a edge-of-your-seat suspense tale that keeps you racing through the pages to find out what is going to happen. This erotic mystery did a fantastic job of keeping me anxious about the outcome even as it continued to keep me mesmerized as the intense sexual relationship deepened between the main characters. I like the way the bonds cemented and matured between the disparate kids on Alice’s team just as her own growth was fostered during the events that take place in this book. The hints that are gradually revealed about the mystery are delicious additions and the combination of vulnerability and power that Dylan displays make him a much more appealing character for me and I found myself cheering at each milestone that is accomplished. This book would undoubtedly be pretty confusing to read unless one was familiar with “Glimmer” but I think that the buildup from that book to this one was deftly done and ensures that these will be added to my keeper shelves!

EXCERPT

One woman stepped forward and doused her candle on the stone altar.  She grasped the bowl in both hands.  Cordelia paused, about to speak, but before she could utter a word, the woman drank the brew in its entirety.  Cordelia stared at her, then filled the bowl again as a second woman stepped forward.

A strangled sound came from the lips of the first woman to drink.  She gasped, clutching her throat.  Her eyes grew large in panic as she tried to speak.  Her chest heaved with the effort to breathe.  She dropped to the ground as her legs crumpled beneath her.  The others watched helplessly as the woman lay before them, retching and gasping for air.

“Agnes,” Emily cried out.

“What’s wrong?”  Cecily asked.

Someone replied in alarm.  “She can’t breathe.  Help her!”

“Let me through.  I know CPR,” Emily Rathbone pushed the women aside.  They stepped back and stared as Agnes continued to gasp.  Emily struggled to lift Agnes’s head and open her jaw while Agnes writhed violently.

“Help me hold her.”  Emily shouted.  Two of the women knelt.  One held Agnes’s arms and the other, her legs.  Emily tilted Agnes’s head and checked her throat.  “There’s nothing there.  Nothing’s interfering with her breathing.  Maybe it’s an allergic reaction.”  She deftly rolled Agnes to her side.  Agnes’s head fell forward, her movements still violent.  She retched again and whispered, “help me.”  Then her body went limp.

Complete stillness filled the clearing.  No one spoke.  Someone finally whispered, “Is she breathing?”

Emily felt for a pulse while the women watched in silence.  She looked up at their concerned faces.  “Agnes is gone.”

EXCERPT

“Remember that house we did yesterday?”

“Yeah.”

“The wife phoned. Says they’re missing some stuff from the home office.”

It’s enough to make me almost throw up. “Kevin, I was on the phone with you. Whatever they say is missing—”

“Some money and a watch.”

“You know I didn’t take it. I don’t even remember seeing anything like that.”

He watches me for a minute, then smiles. “Yeah, I know you didn’t.”

Kevin walks over, puts his hand on my shoulder. “But the problem is your fingerprints are on the drawer handle, aren’t they?”

“Yeah.” I twist in my chair so I can see his face, but he’s already moving to stand in front of me. “But you can explain that. I mean, I was just doing what you told me to.”

He leans against the desk, crosses his arms. “I could.”

The way he says it—like he knows something I don’t—makes my stomach churn. “Kevin?”

My review:

4.5 stars

Sleight of Hand by Natasha Deen is a young adult story about Javvan Malhotra, who makes a serious mistake trying to impress a girl and finds himself in serious trouble that impacts his family and his future. Caught in a moral dilemma, he must decide whether to compound his mistakes or find a way to fight an apparently losing battle to regain his self-respect and find a chance for atonement. An unexpected ally helps him approach his problem from a new perspective and figuring out who to trust will be the key to determining the success of his plans for the future.

This excellent contemporary story blends a myriad of elements in an engaging tale. I love the way things snowball from a poor decision made by an underage boy into a commentary on the importance of family support, a snapshot of the way racial discrimination can range from overt action to subtle digs, and a revelation of the impact that one action can have on the path the rest of one’s life takes. The glimpse of the challenges of moving to another country and maintaining one’s culture while becoming part of a new environment gives texture to the story and I thought the gradual revelation of the morass that Javvan is sinking deeper and deeper into provided a thought-provoking element. I enjoyed the various secondary characters and hope to see them in future tales and I thought this was a well-written and enjoyable quick read.

The Lost Town: Bringing Back Trochenbrod by Avrom Bendavid-Val (VBB, excerpt and GIVEAWAY)

by Avrom Bendavid-Val

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA Nonfiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Trochenbrod was a bustling commercial center of more than 5,000 people, all Jews, that was hidden deep in the forest in northwest Ukraine. It thrived as a tiny Jewish kingdom unnoticed and unknown to most people, even though it was “the big city” for surrounding Ukrainian and Polish villages. The people of Trochenbrod vanished in the Holocaust, and soon nothing remained of this vibrant 130 year-old town but a mysterious double row of trees and bushes in a clearing in the forest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
As I was growing up, my father did not often mention the town Trochenbrod (pronounced Trawkhenbrawd) in Eastern Poland where he was born and raised. But when he did, his longing and affection for it were unmistakable. After my father passed away, I realized I knew nothing about his beloved hometown. He had never volunteered information about it, and I had never asked. Although none of my relatives knew where Trochenbrod had been located, other than “in Poland someplace,” they were certain nothing was there anymore. I was told that after the Nazis murdered all Trochenbrod’s Jews, they destroyed all its buildings, and the memory of it was lost.
How could that be? I wondered. How could all traces of a town and its people vanish? If the town was destroyed in the Holocaust, wouldn’t something—derelict buildings, house foundations, low stone walls—still be found there? And what happened to Christian neighbors of the Jews who lived in Trochenbrod? They weren’t destroyed by the Nazis; maybe their descendants were still there and could tell me something about Trochenbrod in the days when Jews also lived there. I had to find out. I had to see for myself.
EXCERPT
"You're about as transparent as that window, Benny. Maybe more so. It's filthy. Now tell me the truth."
"Screw you, Starke. I don't have tell you nothin'. Get the hell out of my office, and stay outa the bar too."
I sat there for a moment, contemplating his fat face, then I nodded and rose to my feet, but I didn't leave. I walked around the desk, reached inside my jacket and pulled out the MP9, and sat down on the desk facing him.
"Whoa." He leaned away from me, his eyes wide, his hands in front of him, fingers spread.
"Now then, Benny. There are two ways we can do this; either way you'll tell me what I want to know. So, what do you think? Painful or not?"
"Harry, I swear I don't know those two guys. I barely even noticed 'em."
I nodded, and then tapped him gently on the bridge of his nose with the barrel of the nine."
"Ow, ow, ow." he yelled. "That hurt, you son of a bitch."
"I asked you, Benny... painful or not? You chose painful." I tapped him again.
"Oh ow. Goddam it, Harry. Quit it. You'll bust my nose."
"Yup, it's quite likely I will. You ready to talk?"
"I told ya, I don't know who they are."
Smack! This time I laid the flat side of the gun hard against his ear.
"Uch, uch, uch, uch, uch," Hah, the man was actually crying, sobbing as he rubbed his ear. The bridge of his nose was already turning black.
I grabbed his right hand and slammed it down on the desktop, fingers spread.
"Benny, you want to talk to me, before I start on your fingers?"
"Okay, okay." He nodded enthusiastically.
"They... they... work... for the Packman."
"The Packman? You mean Lester Tree, Shady?"
My review:
3.75 out of 5 stars
Harry Starke by Blair Howard is a mystery story that evokes the American noir genre, with its eponymous central character, a private investigator with ties to the police force as well as other movers and shakers.  An unwilling witness to a suicide, Harry is determined to discover the reason for the attractive young woman’s fatal decision.  His investigative techniques are sanctioned by his contact with the police department until he crosses a line that the lieutenant can no longer ignore.  As Harry gets closer to the truth, he finds that far more is at stake than he ever imagined and his case gets even more personal and the end result may not be what he wants after all.
The mystery that gradually unfolds through the course of the story is intriguing and fun to follow but I can’t say that I am thrilled with Harry’s persona.  His hard-bitten persona and adversarial relationship with both a former colleague as well as various thugs provided interesting interludes that show what a tough customer he is, but his blithe dismissal of a long-time relationship, disregard for proper protocol, and willingness to use whatever tools or connections he has to achieve his goals is less than attractive to me.  Despite that, the story is entertaining and keeps one’s attention as Harry works through the clues he finds, even though it has a bit of an unusual twist.  I was a little taken aback at the casual handling of items that I would think are supposed to be part of a documented chain of custody and I am sure that Harry’s unorthodox methods would not be accepted elsewhere, but they definitely contributed to a very colorful story.  This was a good light read that will be appreciated by fans of detective stories starring unorthodox characters who are willing to use whatever means necessary to achieve their goals.
EXCERPT
Hero and Heroine
Did she really expect him to answer so personal a question? Apparently she did, because she was giving him the most provocative smile, one that said she knew she’d put him on the spot. His answer, however, would be too revealing.
She laughed again, but the sound was warm, embracing. “You know, sex doesn’t have to be impolite. It’s a little undignified, but—”
“Which is why it is private.”
“Yes,” she agreed, and cocked her head, reassessing him. “Yes, it is.”
“Why are we talking about this?”
“You tell me.”
Now that would be dangerous. He was talking to her about sex because she made him think of it. Because Adora looked and sounded and smelled like a woman who might enjoy being with a man. Lorant had called her a slut, but Vallmer had never been fool enough to believe it. He had known all along Lorant could not abide being rejected by a woman who found him wanting. Vallmer liked that about Adora, that she was fearless about her opinions. He met too many women who were so completely deferential to men their thoughts could not be trusted.
“I talk to you this way because I feel I can talk with you about anything, anything at all. And because I feel this way, you can steer me into talking about anything you wish.”
Her smile beckoned him to thoughts he would do better to avoid. “Are you calling me artful, Prince Vallmer?”
“I am calling you fascinating.”
