Life Support by Elouise East (Release blitz, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GBP ADULT title

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by author Elouise East, who shares a glimpse of her path to publication...

Elouise East

Reading has always been very important to me. I love being taken into a different world and seeing things through the author’s mind. When I was younger, I read Charlotte’s Web, and that was the point I realized words could be used to provoke an emotional response. From that moment, I began writing. Granted it was only small snippets, little stories, etc, but I loved doing it. Essays at school were never boring or tiresome, they were a chance to write a story.

I never contemplated publishing anything I wrote. It had never even crossed my mind as a possibility. I began beta reading for a friend in 2019 and we got talking. They suggested I try self-publishing. At first, I told them I couldn’t do it. It was a terrifying thought, but after several more pushes, I decided to go ahead.

First Kiss was published in July 2019. In all honesty, it was published too quickly and needed more work on it before it was released. I’ve re-edited it now, and I’m happier with the result.

I was so overwhelmed by the little bits of information that was needed to publish, even self-publish, and I wouldn’t have made it without them. They, along with several other people they introduced me to, helped answer questions and point me in the right direction. I wouldn’t have been able to get through it and continue publishing without them.

A lot of the information they have given me, I still use now. It’s been tweaked and amended as I’ve needed to, and as my backlist and ability has increased.

The thing that has shocked me most about publishing is how easy it is to do. Although I said before there are a lot of little things that are involved, that is true, but the actual process is so simple when it comes down to the actual publishing of a book. The behind the scenes details, for example, the actual book itself, the editing, the cover, the book description, all those things help a book sell, but the actual process of putting that book into the hands of a reader itself is easy.

I’m more than happy to give advice to other people, and I have done. I’m an open book, haha. I’ve learned lessons the hard way and I’ve been given amazing information that I am more than willing to share. There is so much information out there that works for the author stating it, but every author is different. What works for one, might not work for another.

I love writing—all aspects of it—and would be more than happy to make another author love the process too.

Secrets give others more power. Now is the time to fight back.

Blurb

What can they do when their safety and self-worth are compromised?

Casey’s usually bubbly, cheeky demeanour is diminished by sexual harassment from a colleague. When Casey becomes scared for his safety, he seeks out a trainer to teach him how to escape. Withholding the secret is stifling, but he sees no other option if he wants to keep his job. Spilling those secrets to an almost stranger changes his life in a way he never thought possible.

Luke spends his time training people in evasive tactics. He loves his job, but feels inferior to his more successful siblings. How can he compete with lawyers, police officers and teachers? When Casey comes to him for training, Luke knows he’s hiding a secret and wants to get to the source. Finally, Casey confides in him, and Luke sets his sights on helping.

Can they win the fight against people who bring them down?

Excerpt

“What?” His heart rate increased while their eyes connected.

“You overwhelm me with how brave you are,” Luke whispered.

Casey got lost in the expressive, deep blue pools. No one had ever said that to him before. They’d say he was strong because of his job, or he was clever, but no one had ever called him brave. His gaze flicked to Luke’s mouth, seeing a sheen on them as if Luke had swiped his tongue across them. Casey did the same, swallowing hard. He could feel himself sway closer until Luke’s breath was coasting across his skin. When Luke’s hand rose and cupped his cheek, Casey closed his eyes.

Before their lips touched, Casey jerked back. “Marcus,” he said, breathing heavily. “I can’t do this to Marcus. No matter how much of an ass he is.” His skin felt flushed, and his nerve endings were tingling with what could have been. At that moment, he wished he was single.

“I’m so sorry, Casey. I shouldn’t have… I didn’t… I’m sorry. You told me your story, and I tried to kiss you. I’m so sorry.” Luke stood and headed towards the door.

“Luke!” He waited until Luke turned back. “Don’t go. I’m not ready to kiss you, especially as I’m with Marcus, but don’t go.” He sighed. “Tell me about you.”

Luke hesitated. “Let’s make a deal.”

Casey’s mouth twitched. “You and your deals.”

Luke winked. “It gets things done. Anyway, people are going to be worried about you after what happened.” He held up a hand to forestall Casey’s questions. “Not everyone saw, but a couple did. How about we go back out, grab some drinks, pretend you’re okay, and we will sit and talk. And you can ask about me.”

Casey’s gaze roamed the guy who was stood by the door, one hand resting on the handle. His clothing was loose but accentuated his sizeable muscles; Casey didn’t feel scared with him. Quite the opposite, in fact.

“Deal.” He gave a slow smile.

Picking up his empty bottle, he diverted to the bin before moving to the door. The closer he got to Luke, the more his skin prickled with awareness. It had never happened in their previous interactions—at least, Casey didn’t remember feeling it—and he wasn’t sure how to react. If he hadn’t been with Marcus, he might’ve started flirting, but that wasn’t his style. The only reason he had met Marcus in the first place was that Liam had introduced them when Casey had gone to pick him up from the gym one day. Casey had been instantly smitten with Marcus’s looks, which were complemented by his personality on their first date—the double date with Alex and Heath.

Casey had second-guessed their relationship when he’d found out that Craig’s ex was a trainer at the gym Marcus worked at and had spoken with Craig about it before feeling happy to try. He hadn’t wanted Craig to feel scared or upset if Marcus was around. Why Casey had never acknowledged before the possibility that Marcus might take Darren’s side of things, he didn’t know.

“Penny for them.”

Blinking, Casey saw they were still standing at the door to the office, and he felt his cheeks flush. “Sorry. I got lost in my head.”

Luke grinned. “Don’t worry. I do it all the time. My mother wanted to murder me as a child because I never heard her shout until she was right next to me. I was too distracted by what I was doing or thinking about.”

The image of Luke with a woman standing over him, yelling at him, made Casey laugh. It was far too similar to what he’d experienced with his mother, which was why it was so easy to picture.

“Come on. Let’s go get those drinks. I think we need them,” Luke said.

About the Author

I am a bestselling author of contemporary MM romance. I write a variety of themes: sweet and fluffy to high angst to taboo, but friendships are integral to each character's experience. I write books that are emotionally realistic, even if liberties are taken with other aspects of my stories.

Reading and writing have always been a part of my life, although my debut book wasn't published until July 2019. My experience has come from reading thousands of books over the years and being a perfectionist when it comes to trying to make things right. I live in the centre of the UK with my two children, who make life worth living, keep me (in)sane and make me laugh every single day.

My review:

3.5 stars

Life Support by Elouise East features Casey, a paramedic, who resorts to learning self-defense in an effort to deal with sexual harassment. Luke, a trainer, makes a connection with Casey, but struggles to get through to him while maintaining professional ethics and fighting his own self-esteem issues. The pair will have to decide on priorities and learn how to trust each other if they want to form a lasting relationship, but first they have to overcome some pretty serious obstacles.

This adult contemporary gay romance is part of the ‘Crush’ series. Those with triggers should pay close attention to the book description and be aware that there are scenes of assault as well. Although this story can be read as a stand-alone tale, one should be aware that there are a considerable number of characters who are interconnected, and threads of tension and connections that link many of them. It might be helpful to have a list of characters in the back of future books, especially since both of the main characters in this tale have fairly large families.

I like that this story addresses the difficult issues of sexual harassment and emotional abuse with sensitivity and highlights the pain a victim can experience in both personal and professional situations. The slow burn that forms between Casey and Luke is realistic, and there are nicely emotional scenes that show how each evolves and learns to be vulnerable to the other. I love that there is a support network even as I ached that it took so long for the guys to reach out to those around them.

I was a little frustrated by the repetition of the characters’ names constantly, even though I understand the challenge of describing scenes with same sex characters. To me, it makes the action a bit jerky and the writing stilted. Although glimpses of each man’s daily life were provided, I would also have like to have gotten to know them a little more in depth. Since this is the first book in this series I have read, I was also puzzled by some of the undercurrents and tension between various characters, but my guess is that they have been featured in previous stories or will soon get their time in the spotlight.

This book is a thought-provoking and sometimes scary look at a distressingly commonplace occurrence in today’s world. I salute the author for shining light on the subject and giving ideas for coping mechanisms to consider. I would recommend that other books in the series be read first, because I think that would help familiarize the reader with some of the connections between the secondary characters in this particular story. I think these guys also have more of their story to share, and I hope to see them in the spotlight again.

Excerpt

“You had news. Is it about the Arches?”

I grinned, unable to keep it from him.

“They accepted our offer?”

“Yes.”

Jesse bounced up and down in my arms, squealing excitedly. “That’s fantastic!”

“We’ve got to get all the building and land checks done and a survey, so it’s not a done deal yet. But all being well, our youth centre is one step closer to opening.”

Jesse grasped my face and kissed me hard. “It’s exciting, isn’t it?”

“Very.”

His eyes widened. “You should invite your dads to come and stay so we can show them the Arches.”

“I’d been thinking about that.” I carried him over to the sofa and sat down with him on my lap. “Maybe it’s about time we moved out of this flat.”

Jesse tilted his head to the side. “Why?”

“Well, right now, if we want to invite my family down, they have to stay in a hotel.” I paused, measuring my next words carefully. “And at some point, we’re going to have a family, Jesse. There’s not going to be room for children in a one-bedroom flat.” I stroked my thumbs over his lower back. “You wanted a house filled with music and the patter of tiny feet, remember?”

Jesse nodded, but he didn’t speak. His eyes were brimming with tears, and his chin wobbled.

“And I wanted a big bath.”

That made him laugh. “We need a huge bath.”

I stared into his dark eyes. “I want to find our forever home, Jesse. And I want to get married.”

Jesse frowned. “We can’t, not until—”

I silenced him with a kiss. “We know roughly when your heats will be. We can plan around it. We’re already mated. You know I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Now I want to show everyone else that—your family and mine.”

“And the world?” Jesse asked. “Because we’re not gonna get a cosy little wedding.”

I smiled. “The whole world. I’m yours, Jesse, now, always, and openly.”

Jesse gasped. “I’ve got it!”

“Got what?”

“The title of the song I’m going to write for you.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Will you share it with me?”

He smiled mischievously. “Nope. I think I’m gonna keep it a secret.”

I tickled him until I reduced him to a giggling, writhing wreck on my lap. Then I flipped him onto the sofa and lay over him, tickling him more until he was gasping for air.

“Now are you going to tell me?”

He put his hands around my neck as his breathing slowly returned to normal. “‘Openly Yours’.”

I nuzzled his nose with my own. “That’s beautiful.”

“So are you.”

We looked at each other, my heart filling as I saw how much love radiated from his eyes and smile. I kissed him, teasing his mouth with my tongue. “Let’s set a wedding date and start looking at houses.”

Jesse nodded. “Okay.”

Related By Murder by Jo A. Hiestand (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

It is my pleasure to share a guest post by author Jo A. Hiestand, who shares the answer to my question...

ELF: What do you think is the strongest attraction about the genre you like to write in?

JAH:

I write classic mysteries.  I add a strong dose of the cozy element to them—a closed group of people who know each other, all in a small location like a village, and the focus of the story is to solve the identity of the murderer.

For me, and probably many readers, one attraction of reading this type of book is the puzzle, solving the killer’s identity along with—or before—the sleuth does.  It’s a race, pitting our observations and reasoning against those of the experienced detective.  It’s grand fun, attempting to solve the riddle, figuring out clues. It’s a grand workout for the brain.

Another allure this book exerts is escape.  While reading, cares and problems of everyday life are left behind.  We’re plunged into another world, perhaps a different location from where we live.  We get to experience people, sights, customs, and cultures unlike our own, and that’s tremendously interesting.  We’re learning, too, about these places.  Reading a mystery, involving us in the characters’ problems, is a great release from the familiarity (and at times what we may consider boredom) of our routines.  Nothing spices up our lives like escaping to Scotland along with McLaren, for example, and keeping out of a killer’s clutches!

Mysteries also offer a dose of justice.  In our present, crazy world we’re bombarded with news of terrorist strikes, mass shootings, civil unrest, and suicide bombers.  The mystery shows us that this crime, at least, has been dealt with according to Law.  The guilty person has been arrested, possibly about to stand trial and conviction.  Right has triumphed; no one got away with anything.  The system works.

Control might be another attraction to mysteries.  We may have little control over many things in our lives: bad weather, bad drivers, house repairs, co-workers or the boss, family members, rising prices, taxes…  These things can produce frustration, anger, or dejection.  But when we read that the killer is behind bars and all is well in that fictional world, that sense of everything returning to normal assures us that one place, at least, has gained control of the madness that claimed it for a while.

In addition to all this, the genre awards the desire for safety.  No matter the fear produced by the murder, blackmail or assaults, we sense this will end peacefully with the criminal’s apprehension.  There will be no more murders, the blackmail has ended, the physical abuse or threats are over.  The victims and community can relax, stop looking over their shoulders and avoiding shadows.  We are safe.

McLaren isn’t looking to be lied to, insulted, or physically assaulted in Related By Murder.  But those things find him, and his world spirals out of his control.  He loses his sense of safety.  During his hunt for the killer and the person behind the assaults heaped upon him he is pursing an outcome of fairness for himself and the victims.  He, too, puzzles through the clues with which he’s presented, and he triumphs in the end.  There’s more than satisfaction in stopping a killer.  He’s also brought peace to his own life.  It seems to fit right in with the reason we read mysteries.

EXCERPT

McLaren sat up and leaned against the remnant of a broken-off column. How long had he been there? Forty-five minutes, his wristwatch announced. It was time to end this farce.

He didn’t, though. A beam of light near the river changed his plan. He crouched down, hugging the column, and watched.

The torchlight moved up the riverbank, a slow and steady progress that implied the walker was picking his way over rocky ground. The light bobbed several times as the person holding it evidently lost his footing. But it remained focused ahead, toward the main grounds of the Abbey. The progress was now more sure, signifying the rocks and sand had been left behind and the walker was now on firm soil. The light never flicked from side to side, as it would if the person was unsure of the land and was looking for obstacles. Several times the light slid behind a portion of the stone wall or a taller column remainder, but it always appeared again within seconds, still moving straight ahead.

Who the hell would be here at this hour?

Suggestions whispered to him, and he moved quickly to the cemetery section of the Abbey. Hoping to blend in and look like another pile of rocky foundation, he crouched beside a stone coffin. He turned his head and held his breath, not wanting any sound to give away his location.

When he looked up, the light had vanished.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I grew up reading Dumas, Twain, duMaurier, Dickens and the Brontes.  I loved the atmosphere of those books. Add the Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce movies and the moods of 1940s/50s movies like Brief Encounter, Night Must Fall, and The Thirty-Nine Steps, and I knew I wanted to write mysteries, and the books had to be set in Britain. That was a must even though I knew only what I’d seen in the movies and read in the novels.  But the British pull was tenacious.  Three years ago I discovered that I have literally centuries and centuries of English, Scottish and Welsh ancestry.  Do genes mean anything

My first visit to England was during my college years and that cemented my joy of Things British.  Since then, I’ve been lured back nearly a dozen times, and lived there for a year during my professional folksinging stint.

What do I write?  Well, at the moment, I write two British mystery series: the McLaren Mysteries and the Peak District Mysteries.  The McLaren novels feature ex-police detective Michael McLaren, who investigates cold case murders on his own.  The Peak District books feature a different British custom/tradition that is the backbone of each book’s plot.  These are a combo cozy/police procedural, and members of the Derbyshire Constabulary CID Murder team work these cases.

I combined my love of writing, mysteries, music, and board games by co-inventing a mystery-solving treasure-hunting game, P.I.R.A.T.E.S.

I founded the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the international mystery writers/readers organization Sisters in Crime, serving as its first president.

In 2001, I graduated from Webster University with a BA degree in English and departmental honors.  I live in the St. Louis, MO area with my cat, Tennyson, and way too many kilts.

Forgiveness is a hollow prayer you only hear in your dreams.

Patrick Collins has spent years handling cases as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency, even as his secret standing in the preternatural world has changed. He should have confessed to his role as co-leader of the New York City god pack when he and Jonothon de Vere took up the mantle months ago, but he didn’t. Now that split loyalty will cost him at a time when he can least afford it.

Outmaneuvered, framed for murder, and targeted by the Dominion Sect, Patrick has to face a past full of lies to regain his freedom. Revealing the truth means he’ll need to give up the life that has defined him. Everything he’s fought to build with his pack is at stake, and losing them isn’t a price Patrick is willing to pay, but some choices aren’t his to make.

Jono knows they can’t cede any more territory if they want to win the god pack civil war spilling into the streets of New York City. “The only way to win is to take them out completely. That’s going to be a costly fight in terms of blood and territory,” Jono said.

“What about our alliances?” Wade asked.

Jono shook his head. “Their assistance in maintaining our borders is helpful, but we need to be the ones to push Estelle and Youssef out. This is our fight.”

“What about going the direct route and meeting them in the challenge ring?” Marek asked.

“I wouldn’t trust any fight that happens in that place,” Amelia said flatly.

Other people in the crowd echoed her statement. Patrick had never been to the challenge ring located beneath the god pack home in Hamilton Heights. The underground space was familiar to everyone else from the times all the alphas had been summoned to meetings. He’d seen the aftermath of fights held in other challenge rings to know they were bloody spaces. He agreed with Amelia though—no fight held in a space controlled by Estelle and Youssef could be handled fairly.

“I’m not sure how much help the fae will be able to provide right now. Tiarnán was summoned to Tír na nÓg today on an emergency basis. He’s been our liaison for the fae, and I don’t know when he’ll return,” Sage said.

Patrick shrugged. “His absence shouldn’t affect the alliance. We—”

A loud explosion in the bar above cut him off, magic crashing against the wards embedded in Tempest’s walls. They flashed fire bright for a split second, nearly blinding Patrick. Before the glow faded, Patrick was on his feet and racing for the stairs, Jono right on his heels. The crowd of alphas peeled away from his headlong rush forward, giving them both space.

 My review:

4.5 stars

An Echo in the Sorrow by Hailey Turner is Book 6 in the ‘Soulbond’ series that features god pack alpha werewolf Jonothan de Vere and his lover and co-pack leader, mage and Special Agent Patrick Collins. The pair continue to deal with the threats to their leadership as violence escalates in New York City, but the pack dire, Sage, is determined that nothing is going to ruin her wedding…not even the gods’ pesky machinations.

This gay paranormal romance series continues to enthrall, with its fantastical adventures and deft blending of various pantheons that continue to complicate the lives of the main characters. The tale picks up after the momentous struggles in the previous story and its surprising revelation at the end. More gods and demigods are drawn into the struggle that is taking place on a couple of levels, and the city is unwittingly drawn into the civil war that has erupted as Jon and Patrick try to cement their pack’s hold. I love that Wade the dragon is continuing to evolve in his position as part of the family and pack although I can’t quite understand his fascination with pop tarts, lol.

As always, this story is exciting and immediately draws the reader in to cheer for the main characters, has plenty of secondary characters who are intriguing enough to hopefully get their own storylines occasionally, and provides a unique look at a familiar city through a paranormal lens. Those who have not read the other books in the series should probably start at the beginning in order to better appreciate some of the events and revelations in this story. The tension continues to rise, and I can’t wait to find out which new pantheons get involved in the mix as the quest continues.

EXCERPT

The brigands never showed up. The Svadlu concluded the thieves had seen soldiers moving in to protect the school and had elected to flee the realm with the little they’d stolen from a few farms in Gruen the day before. At any rate, after an afternoon of hiding in the hay, we were allowed to come out.

Davor sent most of his soldiers back to Pilk, leaving a few to stand guard through the night.

“Do all the children return home each day?” he asked.

“Most do. A few stay over for various reasons. We teachers take turns spending the night with any left behind. With winter here, more will stay. In bad weather, the barn is nearly full and all the teachers remain. Why?”

“I wondered if perhaps you’d be spending the night?”

“Not tonight.”

“Oh. So does a new husband expect you home soon?”

“I’m single, sir.” I felt the flush in my cheeks at his question. Of the seven girls in my family, I’d been the one cursed with flaming hair no one could ignore and a fair skin that turned warm and pink at the slightest embarrassment. “I live with my parents. My family never knows whether to expect me or not, given the situation.” I tried to force the heat back out of my cheeks.

“I see.” His smile widened. “I travel with a tent befitting my station. I know it would be a tad peculiar, but under the circumstances, could a Mozdol of the realm offer a beautiful young woman…,” at this he reached out and ran his fingers through my silky orange hair “… a toast to her bravery and her assistance during a difficult situation?”

A Mozdol? This man was more than a soldier, more than an officer. I’d been flirting with an honorary prince of the realm, a fighter who’d received this high honor for his bravery in battle. Oh my.

My heart skipped a beat. I looked closer. He was years older than I, his skin weathered by time in the sun. He was stocky and strong, although a bit short for a man. He had a full head of gorgeous shiny black hair, though, and dark eyes that spoke of mystery. I liked him.

“Well, sir …”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Sherrie Cronin is the author of a collection of six speculative fiction novels known as 46. Ascending and is now in the process of publishing a historical fantasy series called The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters. A quick look at the synopses of her books makes it obvious she is fascinated by people achieving the astonishing by developing abilities they barely knew they had.

She’s made a lot of stops along the way to writing these novels.  She’s lived in seven cities, visited forty-six countries, and worked as a waitress, technical writer, and geophysicist. Now she answers a hot-line. Along the way, she’s lost several cats but acquired a husband who still loves her and three kids who’ve grown up just fine, both despite how odd she is.

All her life she has wanted to either tell these kinds of stories or be Chief Science Officer on the Starship Enterprise. She now lives and writes in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she admits to occasionally checking her phone for a message from Captain Picard, just in case.

My review:

4.25 stars

“She’s the One Who Cares Too Much” by S.R. Cronin is Book 2 of ‘The War Stories of Seven Troublesome Sisters’ series and centers on Coral, the sister who discovers that she may find a way to be of benefit in her sister Ryalgar’s defense plan against the potential of invading Mongols. Coral’s courtship by a warrior prince provides a way for her to leave the family home, but complications change their relationship and force Coral to examine what she wants to accomplish with her life. But first she has to survive long enough to make that decision.

This historical fantasy continues the saga of a people who discover that their best defense against a potential invasion of their country, Ilari, is learning to work together and change their preconceived notions to allow them to think outside of the box. Fair warning…this book, just like its predecessor, ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. This story is told from the perspective of Carol, who has been content to live at home and teach children even as her eldest sister has left home to join with a mysterious group of women who live in the forest.

Although this can be read as a stand-alone story, especially if one reads the glossary in the back to learn more about the various aspects of this world and some of its inhabitants, the tale will be savored better if one has read “She’s the One Who Thinks Too Much” first. The world-building is intricate and provides excellent realism, and both the major and minor conflicts are depicted in such a way as to keep the reader invested and cheering for the heroine and those who are important to her. There are plenty of dangling threads (and five other sisters who need their time in the spotlight), but the story also completes a satisfying arc about Coral’s life. I look forward to learning more about the various talents in the family and discovering what other feats of ingenuity reflect the increased power that is amassed by lots of individuals working toward a common cause.
