For Fox Sake by Susan Mac Nicol (VBB, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

ADULT title
by
Susan Mac Nicol

Tate and Clay's newest case has all the earmarks of typical investigative work: lies, deception, collusion, and a dead body - except the body was found in Fetish Alley, and nothing that happens there is typical.

The Places You'll Go And The Things That You'll See

Former SAS soldier, Clay Mortimer, the M in M&W Investigations, had thought he'd seen it all. But when his ex calls and asks for a favour Clay is intrigued, and then a bit surprised. He and his partner, Tate Williams, have a robust and imaginative sex life, but the things they see and learn in Fetish Alley take their understanding of human behaviour to the next level. Tate's take is part kid in a candy store fascination, part shocked. At the end of the day, all good detective work requires an open mind and the skill to ferret out the truth. Still, the layers of deceit and avarice they encounter are more than par for the course, particularly from people who are not keen about outsiders to the world of Fetish Alley.

Excerpt

Tate sat beneath the covers, his iPad propped up against raised knees as he scrolled down the screen. His brow furrowed as Clay climbed in next to him. “Look at this. Rick’s sent me the police report from Dixon’s case. No one could find them earlier in the station. He made a stink about it and hey, presto. Now we have it.”

Clay picked up his reading glasses from the bedside table, unfolded them, and perched them on his nose. “What am I looking at?” he enquired, peering over at the tablet.

Tate’s finger moved across the screen as he pointed out areas of interest. “The man who alerted the cops didn’t find the body himself. He saw a severed hand, and what appeared to be a costume, then called the cops.”

Clay blinked. “But Dixon wasn’t missing any hands.”

Tate nodded. “I know. Turns out it was a prop, something used in a previous production of who knows what. The place was full of old stage stuff.” He ran his finger across another area of the report. “The cops checked it out, just in case, and they were the ones who discovered the real live body.” He sniggered. “Well, not live, but you know what I mean.”

Clay did. His partner’s dark and often twisted sense of humour was entertaining even if sometimes it bordered on being downright scary.

Tate frowned. “They found Dixon in the basement, still dressed in his fox costume. He must have had his suit on underneath, because, look here.” Tate pointed to what looked like an amateur mobile phone shot. “There’s a cufflink right there.”

Clay leaned in and sure enough, there was a gold cufflink in the shape of a fox in the right shirt cuff. “Hmm,” he mused. “The report says he’d collapsed there on the spot. Then the doctor on scene confirmed it looked like a heart attack and that was it. No bloody post-mortem or anything.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “He must have been boiling in his suit and the costume. I suppose it was a cold night, and it was raining, so that might explain it. I’d be interested as to why no one saw a man dressed as a fox walking down to the theatre. I mean it’s not that far from the club, but the area is populated.”

Tate nodded. “I wondered about the lack of witnesses too. Someone should have seen something. And how could the cops not find the death suspicious, even a little, when the man was wearing a fox costume over his suit?”

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

For Fox Sake by Susan Mac Nicol is the first book in the Fetish Alley series and features the charismatic pair from “Feat of Clay” (in the ‘Men of London’ series), Clay Mortimer and Tate Williams. An investigation at the behest of one of Clay’s former lovers brings the duo to Fetish Alley and introduces them to a variety of kinks and the folks who participate, but they’re hampered by the secrecy practiced as well as Tate’s discomfort with the suave ex.

This adult gay contemporary mystery story features the intriguing couple who use their complementary skills to solve the cases presented to their investigative service. The story starts with a startling scenario and then unfolds in a somewhat meandering path that attempts to prove that a death pronounced as non-suspicious—isn’t. There are fun cameos by various men who were spotlighted in the previous series as well as introductions to multiple denizens of Fetish Alley who will undoubtedly feature in subsequent stories. Interwoven in the story are Clay’s upcoming milestone birthday and Tate’s attempts to deal with his jealousy, as well as interludes that prove that Tate has nothing to worry about in his sizzling relationship with his lover.

Although I loved the connection between the two main characters and the affection shown not only for each other but for others in their intimate circle, I wasn’t captivated by the mystery. I haven’t read most of the other books in the previous series, and I think I probably would have had a better understanding of the nuances if I had, but this still can be read as a stand-alone story.  I look forward to reading subsequent stories that explore some of the other businesses in this unique locale while featuring this yummy couple.

Soul of Discretion by Susan Mac Nicol and M. Tasia (VBB, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

Soul of Discretion

by Susan Mac Nicol and M. Tasia

Blurb:
CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET

Simon Bridgeworth believes in loyalty, and keeping things in-house. When he discovers his best friend, who has been running the Canadian division of Simon's tech empire, has been skimming millions from the company, Simon flies to Toronto to get to the bottom of the theft and learns his friend has been murdered. Devastated and at a loose end, Simon knows there's no way the company's problems can be kept under wraps now. Imagine his surprise when he learns the Mountie investigating the murder is the first repeat Simon has allowed himself in years.

Sergeant Nick Cooper is a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He's served his country in the military, and now he's protecting the citizenry of Toronto. But devotion to duty is no longer enough. On a whim, Nick hooks up with Aristocrat69 on crUIzer, and what started as one night of incredible sex turns into an attraction neither man can ignore. When a grisly mob murder sends Nick to the Breakforce corporation, he is shocked to discover his lover is none other than its CEO. When Simon's life is threatened, ethical lines blur as Nick does anything to keep him safe - no cost is too high for the man who has become Nick's everything.

******************************

Excerpt:

Pushing himself up into the sitting position, Nick prepared to get up and go to the bathroom when Simon grabbed his arm. “Where are you going?”

Nick pulled back, shocked by the question but he answered, anyway. “I’m getting cleaned up to go.”

“No.”

No? What the hell? “You don’t want me to get cleaned? Come on man, you can’t be serious. I’ll only take a minute.” Nick’s anger rose. He hadn’t pegged Simon as an asshole but obviously, he might have been wrong.

Simon sat up and took Nick’s hands. “No, I meant I would like it if you stayed. We can have a drink, maybe order in food. Have you eaten?”

Nick couldn’t stop himself from staring at his lover for a moment, but he quickly recovered. “Sure, I’d like that.” He honestly would.

“I’ll clean up and leave a robe in the bathroom for you to use if you’d like.” Simon said before kissing Nick and walking to the bathroom naked, making Nick’s cock twitch. “Easy there, we need a breather between rounds.”

Simon came out of the bathroom wearing the same yoga pants he had on the first time they’d hooked up. The ones that highlighted that perfect ass of his. “All yours, Nick.”

“Thanks. Do you mind if I take a quick shower?” It’d give him the extra time to try to work out what the hell was going on with Simon.

“Yes, go right ahead. I’ll pour us a drink and then we can look over the room service menu.” Simon replied acting as if this was perfectly natural to him. Nick didn’t think it was.

“If that’s what you want.” Nick answered, still unsure of the situation.

Simon picked up on this and walked over to stand in front of him. “I realize I’m behaving oddly compared to last night. I’ve been thinking, and if you’re agreeable, I propose that we spend our free moments together while I’m in town. We get on well and even you must admit, we’re sexually compatible.”

Nick thought about it, he wanted to see Simon again. “How long are you expected to stay in Toronto?”

“At the moment it appears I won’t be able to conclude my business in Canada for at least a couple weeks.”

Well, no one ever accused him of being stupid. Weeks of the best sex of his life with a man he finds irresistible. Where did he sign up? Nick would likely regret this when it ended, but until then he planned to enjoy this to the fullest.

“Okay, deal. While you’re in town, we’ll see each other.”

“And no one else. If you’re with me at night, I don’t want to share you with any other men. I’ll do the same.”

Nick had never been one to date multiple men at the same time, even if this wasn’t really considered dating. But if Simon needed to hear it, Nick had no problem with that. “I agree, no other men.”

Simon flashed a smile that must have men falling to their knees all over England. “Now get showered so we can order dinner.” Nick smiled back before heading into the bathroom still shocked by the turn of events.

My review:

3.75 out of 5 stars

Soul of Discretion by Susan Mac Nicol and M. Tasia features Canadian Mountie, Sergeant Nick Cooper, and the man who starts out as a hook-up but turns out to have quite a few unexpected facets, Simon Bridgeworth. Their private lives threaten to spill over to their professional personas when Nick is assigned to work on a homicide case that involves Simon and his company. The lines become blurred as each man pursues justice, but their biggest challenge may be figuring out what role they will have in each other’s life.

This adult contemporary m/m romantic suspense tale follows two sexy men who morph from strangers meeting through an app for a one-night stand to a team determined to get justice for Simon’s murdered friend and employee. I liked the heat between the men and the hint of danger that overshadows their developing relationship but I didn’t quite connect to either man as much as I would have liked. For me, some of the motives were a little murky and I couldn’t quite appreciate the annoyance when punishment was enacted since rules had indeed been broken. The timing was a little erratic and some things were glossed over in order to move the story along, but I suspect part of that is due to the challenges of co-writing. Despite all of that, I enjoyed the story and one particular secondary character, particularly because of the Canadian-British connection and contrast, and I wouldn’t mind seeing these guys in future tales.

Forbidden Song by Brooklyn Ann (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

 I have the pleasure of a guest post by author Brooklyn Ann, who shares the answer to my question...

ELF: What is one of your hobbies and how has it enriched your writing?

BA:  I like to work on cars. Yes, cars. As in being my own mechanic. My interest began as a necessity since I had been too poor to take my car into a mechanic’s shop, so I had to fix it myself. When my first car died and people mocked me for thinking I could bring her back, it only made me more determined to prove them wrong. Necessity is the mother of invention – my photo is next to that saying. I rebuilt the engine and suspension of my beloved Datsun, and the car took me to college, where I got my degree in automotive technology. I worked as a mechanic for a couple years before I injured my shoulders and decided to go back to college to get my English degree and focus on my writing.

I still work on cars when I have the time and my experience turning wrenches has definitely enriched my work. There’s a subplot in With Vengeance (Hearts of Metal book 2) where the heroine’s ex sabotages her car and she and the hero bond as they fix it. Research is great, and I recommend it to everyone, but there’s nothing like the real thing – knowing how to fix a car put flow into writing those scenes, which made the characters’ interactions more intimate and realistic.

Alas, there isn’t much car stuff happening in Forbidden Song, the newest installment in the series, but my love for classic cars will reappear in the next novel in the Hearts of Metal series.

EXCERPT

Weaving his way through the backstage crowd, pausing to sign autographs along the way, he embarked on his search for the raven-haired beauty.

Luck shone upon him. There she was, off in a corner by the stage left exit. Alone.

She looked up at him and smiled with an intriguing combination of shyness and curiosity. Oh, man. Those green eyes.

He gathered his formidable charm and grinned as he approached. “Hey, are you the new girl Kat and Kin hired?”

She nodded with a slight frown and extended her hand. Fuck. He remembered Kat telling him to quit calling women girls.
“I’m Christine.”

“Cliff Tracey.” He gave her a long, slow smile, and was gratified to see her blush. Good, now he was back on the right track.
His fingers curled around hers. Damn, her skin was soft. No calluses, so she likely wasn’t a musician.

A light laugh tumbled from her lips. “I know. I really enjoyed your performance tonight. Your voice is incredible, and that solo during ‘Sorrow’s Harvest’ gave me chills. In fact, I’d wanted to talk to you.”

“Oh?” He kept his tone light and teasing to hide his excitement. She’d admired his performance. That was usually the first thing chicks said before the flirting began. Maybe he’d mistaken what he’d thought was lack of interest earlier. “About my solo?”

“No, though I’ll admit your talent does blow my mind.” She took a deep breath as if gathering her composure for some big announcement. “Aside from writing for Metalness, I’m working on my doctorate in occupational psychology and could use your help for my dissertation.”

Cliff blinked. “Oh. Uh…I only got as far as my associate’s, so I don’t know how much good I’d be. What’s the topic of your paper?”

“I’m studying the effects of group dynamics within metal bands under high stress conditions.” Her clinical tone was comical even as it was disappointing, what with her seeming lack of response to him.

“You want to study me?” he joked. In return, he could study her.

“The whole band, really,” she replied. “But I figured, since you’re the lead singer, I’d have to ask you. You see, my goal is to be able to travel on the road with a band and document my observations. I was hoping I could tag along, not only for the rest of this Metalfeed tour, but also your regular tour that starts next week.”

Cliff puffed up, happy that for once someone had acknowledged him as the leader of the band instead of Klement. Then: “Did you talk to Kat about it?” Since Christine worked for Kat, maybe the guitarist had suggested it.

Christine nodded. “She said she’d love to have me, but that she doesn’t have the seniority in the band to make that kind of call.”

Well, I’d love to have you, Cliff wanted to say, but he didn’t want to overplay his hand. “Let me think about it….”

Smoke by Emily Mims (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY)

I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post by author Emily Mims, who shares with us her answer to the question...

ELF:  What is one of your hobbies and how has it enriched your writing?

EM:  My second passion in life, after telling my stories, is music. I was blessed with parents who bought a piano when I was nine and treated me to nine years of piano and organ lessons. I played both for fun and semi-professionally during my teen years and served as church organist during high school and college. That extensive background on keyboard and theory enabled me as a teenager to pick up a guitar and teach myself to play it. As an adult, I continued to play on and off, but teaching school, writing and rearing a family got in the way, and I was lucky to sit down at the piano three or four times a year.

I found myself returning to my interest in music in the summer of 2012. I was in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and happened upon a luthier demonstrating a mountain dulcimer. I sat down and in just a few minutes was making music on it. Needless to say, that dulcimer came home with me and I found a tiny but enthusiastic group of dulcimer players, the San Antonio Riverpickers, who taught me the old mountain tunes that they play. I fell in love with a second instrument, the ukulele, on my first trip to Hawaii in the winter of 2013. I brought home a ukulele, got chord charts and within just a short period of time was playing that little instrument also. Since then, I have picked up a bowed psaltery, an autoharp, a hammered dulcimer, a banjo dulcimer and a mandolin dulcimer. I don’t play all of them yet, but give me a little time!

Through the Riverpickers, I discovered and began attending the various dulcimer festivals held in Texas and the ukulele workshop held at the Kerrville Folk Music Festival every year. These festivals are wonderful. As well as offering performances by true masters of the craft, there are plentiful workshops offered to interested participants. Almost everybody there has a gig bag with them! My husband and I also play with Ukulele Ladies and Gents, an all uke group that performs frequently for everything from parades to murder mystery dinners.

So when I was thinking about a second series to write, having mined the lake community in the Texas Hill Country series to its limit, I wanted to do something with this renewed love of mine. So I combined my musical knowledge and background with the place where it all began-Appalachia. I’ve spent literally months in the region since my son and his family moved there in 2009 and love it there. My characters in some ways are based on the musicians I’ve met and studied with at the festivals, many of whom have sat down and shared with me what it’s like being a professional musician. My heroes and heroines all play mountain and bluegrass music (these are two separate but related genre) in a fictional bluegrass club in Bristol, Tennessee. My characters play the same songs on the same instruments that I do. Francesca learns the same songs on her fiddle that I learned on my dulcimer. Cooper’s bowed psaltery looks and sounds a whole lot like mine does, although he plays it a lot better than I do. The festivals portrayed in ‘Smoke’ and the other books in the series, aptly dubbed the ‘Smoky Blue’ series, are like the ones we’ve attended. Research for this series has been minimal. Or does going to a music festival count as research?

More importantly, my heroes and heroines share my love for music. Music is a passion with them, just as it is with me. It’s what draws them together in the first place and what holds them together against all odds. It holds Francesca and Cooper together when it would seem they have nothing else in common and draws them back to one another in the end. I sincerely hope that my readers can feel this passion that my characters feel for their music. If they can, then I have done my job.

GENRE: Romance/Romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A concert violinist and musical prodigy, Francesca Giordano is internationally acclaimed and always in the spotlight—right where she doesn’t want to be. Not after she’s witnessed a murder. Suddenly on the run, she finds her way to Bristol, Tennessee, and to the music club Acoustics. There, as “ Chessie Hope,” she can hide out in the open. But with this newest gig comes a different kind of danger. Older and impossibly sexy, bluegrass singer Cooper Barstow is everything she’s ever wanted in a man, and his daughters are just as easy to love. Yet Francesca cannot enjoy the luxury of such a relationship, not even if he could protect her from the men on her trail or if she could be honest with him about who she is. Cooper is as wounded as he is strong, and he needs someone who will stay by his side for the rest of his life. Just as Francesca does. And the smoke on the mountains and the haze of desire almost make her believe that could happen.
EXCERPTS
“No, it was more than that.  You’re wise for your tender years, Chessie.  How did you get to be so smart?”
“I’m not all that smart.  You’d eventually have figured it all out.”
They stared into one another’s eyes for a moment.  “I was jealous.”  Cooper was abrupt.  “Of Jeremy.  When he came on to you.”
Chessie cupped his face between her hands.  “Cooper, why?”
Cooper put his good hand on Chessie’s shoulder.  “He’s young and he’s cute and he has both his arms.”
“If I were into boys, I might have been impressed.  But I’m not into boys, Cooper.  I’m into men.  One man, in particular.  And you know what?  I’m going to kiss that man, right now.”
Cooper stood, not moving, as Chessie went up on her tiptoes and placed her lips against his.  She held his face in her hands and nibbled, touching and seeking in the gentlest of caresses before deepening their embrace.  At first Cooper let her take the lead, but as hiss torment became unbearable he crushed her to him, her soft curves fitting just right into his hard, muscled body like a cool drink of water in the parched Arizona desert.  She wrapped her arms around his body and held him even closer.  Her nipples stiffened with desire and poked into his chest.  Cooper was overcome with longing.  He wanted this woman so badly he could taste it.
Synopsis:
Some ghosts won’t take “yes” for an answer.
Jack Harris has loved Legs Anderson since they were kids. Now that he has her in his bed, he has no intention of letting her go. Aunt Ada has other ideas, even from the grave.
GETTING BETWEEN JACK…
Orphaned at a young age, Legs Anderson owes her Aunt Ada everything. The stoic old lady raised her, and Ada’s warnings about men—and the Harris boys in particular—have stuck, even after her death. Of course, that could be because Ada stuck around, too.
…AND HIS LEGS
Patience is not one of Jack Harris’s virtues, and he’s waited too long to start a life with the woman he’s loved since childhood instead of them just knocking boots. Now Ada is interfering from beyond the grave, haunting the old Victorian house she bequeathed to her niece and reinforcing Legs’s fears of commitment. But Jack won’t give up. No matter what trouble may follow, the house will be renovated, Ada will learn to let go, Legs will put her money where her mouth is…and then Jack’ll put his lips everywhere else.
EXCERPT
The roar of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Rachel’s block and the rev of a throttle in her driveway announced Jack’s arrival. Legs tried to appear nonchalant when he walked through the poolside gate, but the sight of his sun-streaked hair and tanned, muscular good looks nearly knocked her off her seat. She eased her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to get a better look.
When he stepped into the pool area dressed in black jeans, black biker boots, and a white muscle shirt that framed his pumped-up shoulders and biceps, she caught her breath. Everyone in the group said “hey” and Rachel offered him a cold drink, but his focus had remained on her. He slid his sunglasses on top of his head and nodded in her direction.
Legs remembered his gaze meeting hers before his attention strayed to her gold and black bikini then savored every inch of her skin. An appreciative smirk curled his lips and desire flashed in his beautiful blue eyes. He took a long pull of the soft drink someone handed him and then set the can down on the patio table. He looked her way and said, “Want to go for a ride?” The invitation came out like a dare.
My review:
3.5 stars
Lip Service by Adele Downs is a sexy contemporary romance with paranormal elements that centers around Linda “Legs” Anderson and her complicated relationship with Jack Harris.  Despite a sizzling sexual connection, they can’t seem to deepen the relationship into anything more permanent, not only because of Legs’ fear of commitment but also because of her Aunt Ada’s opposition…that is continuing from beyond the grave.  Jack is going to have to use all of his considerable inventiveness to win the woman he has been in love with for most of his life, but even that may not be enough, because who can fight a determined ghost?
This is a quick read that has a great sense of small town life, some nice twists, lots of heat, and poignant moments. The characters frustrated me a bit because they continue to vacillate between following up on what they theoretically felt from the very beginning of their relationship and complying with other people’s wishes so I wasn’t convinced of their dedication to each other at first, and they don’t always behave in a manner that would be logical to me, but there are definitely spicy scenes to remind one that these two are on the same page when it comes to their intimate encounters (like bringing new meaning to idea of stenciling on one’s walls).  If you’re looking for a fast sexy read with an unusual antagonist throwing obstacles in the path of two lovers, this is the story for you.
