Harmonia Shae, a time traveler, faces a revengeful fallen sidhe queen set on enslaving humankind. A Sihir magician traps Harmonia’s freewill inside a talisman forcing her to submit to three summonses.

On the brink of death, she finds an unwanted champion in Tristan Avery. Upon awakening, she is in his house. Frightened, she scrambles to escape his overbearing need to protect her. Time is short, she must find the ambassador of the gates and return to her cousin’s house to formulate a plan of action to undo the cataclysmic effects she is compelled to inflict on an unsuspecting city once she completes the queen’s commands.

The wild cowboy sidhe, Tristan Avery finds the dark haired beauty unconscious and poisoned with copper. Determined, to find out why she is here, he follows her every move. When a calamitous earthquake hits Sedona, he is sure she is connected to the mystifying vibrational energy storming through the ley lines of magick. As minder of the Kingdom of Sidhe, he becomes entangled in a battle to safeguard Sedona and defend the women he’s vowed to protect.

Harmonia and Tristan can’t stop the tempestuous hot relationship developing between them as they each hide their own secrets. Will these two overcome the obstacles and find love?

EXCERPT:

 “What do you want with me?” Harmonia asked, her heartbeat racing, nearly exploding with the effects of the drug.

“Revenge.”

Another jolt of excruciating pain surged through her brain. Her arms remained immobile, unable to move against the repressing force of the woman’s energy.

A fire djinn, of the Infrit tribe, came through the tunnel to her left. Harmonia recognized the sister of her father’s enemy, Vera.

“You recognize me,” she said, circling around Harmonia with a satisfied grin.

In the recess of the cave, Harmonia sensed a Sumerian Sahir. A sour taste of panic formed in her mouth. Her eyes darted around the room searching for the magician. As a child she had learned to avoid the Sahir, known for their deceit and evil deeds.

Vera materialized a dark magick stone of solomon, giving the flaming talisman to the sidhe woman. The stone crackled with electrical energy before turning an ashy black. “It’s time to initiate the plan,” Vera declared.

Harmonia trembled, realizing they meant to bind her to the talisman. Fingering the pendant around her neck, she concentrated on Oaf and her grandfather. Releasing the water assimilation shield protecting her body, she attempted to slip through the quantum particles of the time ribbon and into safety. For a split second, she thought she might succeed. The wind encircled the vibrating molecules of her body, forcing her to materialize and retreat against the wall. The sidhe’s wind magick left Harmonia gasping for breath. Without her shield, she was vulnerable to the wind’s power.

The sidhe stroked Harmonia’s dark hair. “Silky and beautiful. So perfect,” she said, pulling a few strands from her scalp.

Harmonia heaved a heavy breath and cleared her mind of the shock. She pushed against the wind, determined to gain an upper hand before it was too late. The elements of wind thwarted and overpowered her water magick. Her body weakened. Unable to fight against the poison racing through her veins, she collapsed breathlessly.

“If I’m to be your servant, who is my master?” Harmonia asked, speaking through her teeth with forced restraint.

The female’s silver lips curved into a wicked grin. “Soon, you and all in the kingdom will remember the days of the unseelie reign.”

“Your clan.” With a resurgence of strength, Harmonia pulled the water particles from the wind and deflated its strength, giving her enough time to open the time ribbon.

“Stop her,” Vera hissed to the sahir. He shot an arrow into the ripple of energy causing her body to crumble to the ground, preventing her escape.

The sahir pulled his arrow from her shoulder. “Try it again and the next arrow will puncture your heart.”

Determined to keep her dignity, she stood. “How can I be of service to one so experienced in the world of sidhe magick as you? Your skills far superior to my own.”

“Aw, you desire a game of wits. The binding requires you have the opportunity.”

Show No Weakness by Joyce Holmes (review)

by Joyce Holmes

--> Show No Weakness by Joyce Holmes is a contemporary romance title that follows single mother, youth counselor Joely Sinclair as she deals with her teenage son Taylor’s growing pains and his search for an adult male role model. The conflict of continuing to keep Taylor from learning about the negative aspects of his father while keeping the boy on the straight and narrow path is almost more than the Joely can deal with, particularly once RCMP Corporal Cole Dennison gets added to the mix. Cole has his own painful past to deal with but he’s unwillingly drawn to the protective mom and her personable son. Unfortunately, both Joely and Cole need to make peace with the past before they can explore a future together.

I enjoy reading the stories penned by this talented author because they give me glimpses of a life in a country I am unfamiliar with. The realistic characters face problems that I can relate to, despite never having been in their shoes. I enjoyed seeing the flourishing of the relationship between Cole and the young man he elects to mentor, and thought the slippery slope of peer pressure was nicely depicted. The attraction that builds between the two main characters was delicious to follow, even if I did want to shake some sense into them occasionally, lol. I love stories that end with me sighing happily, and this one definitely evoked that emotion.

A copy of this story was provided to me for review

EXCERPT:

Time for a practical demonstration…

I step into a sandwich shop. It is busy with the lunch hour rush. Jimmy sits at one of the tables, staring into his book, and trying not to think. He is a heavy guy, big and round with jowls and a frown. His connection to the Loom is worn thin, and a lot of his strings play sour, dull, notes. He is nearly forty, but has never been kissed and never known that warm fuzzy glow in his chest.

What he has known is shame, self-doubt, and fear. Whenever he has felt his heart crack open, he has been trained to think it is unnatural and shameful. People like him were the butts of jokes, when he was a kid. Most the people he hang around still use “queer” and “gay” as a shorthand for worthless and disgusting. He has spent too long burying his feelings, and now believes that they make him less of a man, and less of a human..

There is a girl at his office who likes him. She is friendly and flirty. He responds politely, but is so convinced of his self-image that he thinks she is quietly mocking him. He sees no malice in her, but he thinks there is gentle teasing at his expense.

Kelly is in the queue. He is waiting on a chicken and avocado baguette to go with his bottle of soda. He is thirty-nine, tall, burly, and jolly. He has a kind laugh and gets on with everybody in the office. He recognises Jimmy. They bump into each other in the office kitchen, making coffees. They talk about cricket and football while waiting on the kettle.

Jimmy nods for Kelly to join him. They joke about the latest email from head office. The "Fair culture flowchart" is a policy that spends three thousand words telling them, in essence, not to be dicks.

Neither men see me standing by their table. I pluck the string that binds them. It plays a sweet note, made heavy by Jimmy's doubts. I knock his drink into his lap. Jimmy squawks in surprise and Kelly drops to his knees, mopping at Jimmy's lap with napkins. Jimmy panics at the touch.

"Hey. Let me." Jimmy laughs a little. "If you don't mind where you put your hands, you will do something you will regret."

I stoop down to Kelly's ear and whisper, "Will you?"

Kelly gives a dirty laugh. "I wouldn't regret it. Would you?"

For a moment they hold each other's gazes.

Show No Weakness by Joyce M. Holmes (Release blitz, guest post)

SnW Slideshow.jpg

I have the pleasure of a guest post by author Joyce M. Holmes, and have had the chance to share part of her journey, so I know firsthand how delightful her stories are!

JMH:  My path to publishing can easily be described as more stop than start. From my earliest memories, I’ve loved to write, and the idea of one day being a published author was a secret fantasy held close to my heart. Meanwhile in the real world, I got married at the tender age of twenty, and my husband and I focused on our jobs and making ends meet. A few years later, I became a young mom and, for the better part of two decades, I immersed myself in raising my three boys. Nothing was more important. Any thought of writing was summarily relegated to the far recesses of my mind, along with my dream of being an author.

As my boys got older and became involved in sports, I started submitting write-ups of their games to the local papers, and they always got printed. Those small successes fueled the fire kept on slow simmer for too many years. On my fortieth birthday, I sat myself down, as people tend to do, and asked what did I still want to achieve for "me"? I wanted to write a book. So I did. And it was terribly bad. But the bug had bitten. I wrote another one, then another and another…

I took classes, attended conferences, joined writing groups, and I began getting "good" rejection letters. I know, right? Total oxymoron. It was frustrating and discouraging because, good letters or not, they were still rejections. And I simply decided to stop writing. Halfway through a story, I just completely gave up on it. But if you have a true passion for something, it can't be denied. It took a few years, but I gradually found my way back to writing. My first project was to take my favorite story, Show No Weakness, and edit the heck out of it to bring it into the twenty-first century. My, how the world had changed in those few brief years.

The publishing world had also changed in that short time. No longer did an author have a limited number of big publishers to submit to. With the emergence of e-publishing, many small presses had opened up, and my newly edited story found a home with one of them. I’ve since published three more books.

The world of publishing continues to evolve and, with self-publishing becoming a popular option, several of those small presses have had to close their doors, including the one that had published my first two books. I felt discouraged and overwhelmed, and didn’t know the best way to proceed. It took another year of waffling, but I’m so pleased and excited that Show No Weakness has been given new life with Roane Publishing.

Contemporary Romance Novel
By Joyce M. Holmes
Release Date: April 10, 2017

Blurb:  She’s a tenderhearted social worker, looking for her Happy-Ever-After. He’s a distrustful RCMP Corporal who’s sworn off relationships. Factor in a surly teen heading for delinquency, and you have a case of passion and turmoil too explosive to handle.

As a defense mechanism to deal with his guilt and grief over his daughter's death, Cole Dennison has become an expert at compartmentalizing his feelings. He keeps his personal life private, while making it his professional mission to rescue children in peril.

Joely Sinclair is fiercely protective and openly compassionate. When she meets Cole Dennison, she falls hard. He's everything she admires in a man, and because she wears her heart on her sleeve, she can't understand how or why Cole keeps all his emotions to himself.

As much as Cole resents his interest in Joely, with her inquisitive and caring nature, he can't deny her appeal. Against his better judgment, he becomes involved in both her and her son's lives. Taylor is in desperate need of a positive male role model, and Cole can't turn his back on the boy. But when Joely starts talking love, Cole's inability to commit puts an end to their relationship—until a dangerous situation throws them back together.

Excerpt:

-->
“By the time I turned sixteen, I was pregnant. I became a child bride at seventeen, married to an adult-sized infant with chest hair, with a real live baby doll to take care of, as well. That marriage was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. Before I hit twenty-one, it was over.” She heard the bitterness in her voice and stopped talking.

“That had to be rough, but isn’t it time to stop beating yourself up about it? At least you had enough sense to get out.”

The compassion, the offer of understanding in his voice almost overwhelmed Joely. She wondered if he’d be as sympathetic if he knew she had left her precious little boy with her alcoholic husband while she worked. And it took four years and a serious injury before she clued in to the fact her toddler didn’t get all his bruises from being overactive and clumsy.

No, Cole had it wrong; she didn’t have a whole lot of sense when she was younger.

He pushed his coffee cup aside and leaned forward in his chair to stare sharply at her. She realized he must be very good at his investigative work. Those dark penetrating eyes would intimidate anyone into telling the truth when they flashed as fiercely as they were right now.

“You’re upset. I didn’t mean to do that,” he apologized. “I wanted to make you feel better.”

“Oh no, hey, I’m not upset with you. I actually appreciate your effort. I can’t remember the last time I had a conversation with a man who cared how I felt about myself. Men are usually much more concerned about how I feel about them.”

“You already told me you didn’t like me.” He smiled brilliantly, his eyes crinkling. “Whaddaya say to giving me a chance to change your mind?”

For just a moment, Joely saw beneath the laughing, self-confident grin to the flicker of loneliness in his eyes. He was new to the area, she remembered. He probably didn’t know many people, and here she was monopolizing the conversation. She ignored his question and posed one of her own.

“Why did you choose law enforcement for your career?”

His gaze unexpectedly turned cold. His features revealed no emotion, nothing to indicate why he suddenly shut down. The pause grew a little too long, giving Joely the impression he preferred not to answer.

“I take a lot of satisfaction out of my job, especially working with the kids,” he eventually replied, his voice back to that aggravatingly polite, neutral tone. “But it wasn’t a matter of choice so much as of doing what was expected.”

“Your parents said you had to become a cop?” Joely wanted to keep her mouth shut and let him do the talking, but stunned disbelief made her blurt it out before she could stop herself.

Cole smiled tightly. “My grandfather was a cop, same with my father. As far as they were concerned, there was no other suitable job for a Dennison, and they presumed I’d follow their lead. My mom didn’t get a say; she died when I was five.”

Joely let out an involuntary gasp of sympathy. “Oh, I’m sorry. How sad for you to grow up without a mother.” Not having a father had left a gaping hole in her childhood and even though her mom would’ve never won mother-of-the-year, she’d always given freely of her hugs and kisses. She was important to Joely, and Joely couldn’t imagine growing up without her.

Cole lifted a shoulder casually. “I survived. You don’t miss what you never really had.”

“Yes, you do,” she replied fiercely. “You miss it and you want it terribly. At least I did. I wanted a father more than I wanted anything else. It was the defining reality of my childhood. How can you say you didn’t miss your mother?”
Something hard and acrid flashed in his eyes, and he didn’t acknowledge her words. He pushed out of his chair abruptly. “We should get back to the detachment. Your son’s waited long enough."

~~~oOo~~~
EXCERPT:
Unmarried and approaching thirty in a small town branded her as ready and willing to meet every unattached man who set foot inside the city limits. A sigh escaped. Like last week when Espe called Trent Sullivan over to their table at El Tres Amigos and then suddenly remembered an important errand, leaving them together. What Espe hadn’t known was Cadence and Trent already had been set up on blind dates—twice—by other well-meaning friends.
Nothing had clicked on those occasions either. Cadence craved someone with a mysterious past like in her beloved romantic suspense novels. A dark, shadowy figure who knew how to excite a woman with a molten look or a lingering touch. A man who fought to hide his pain and almost succeeded. Not someone like Trent—a guy whose high-school accomplishments she could probably recite.
Sweet plaintive notes of a stringed instrument floated on the breeze. Cadence stopped, straining to recognize the tune. A person didn’t grow up surrounded by folk music without knowing just about every ballad that could be plucked.
But this one eluded her. The twanging strings cried with a soulful sadness that grabbed her by the throat. Her thoughts were washed in loneliness, and she turned toward the sound, past the Heritage Herb Garden. A part of Cadence that couldn’t resist helping others had to see who was expressing such need.
She lifted the hem of her long skirt and hurried toward the haunting sound, as if the notes pulled her feet along the path. The compulsion to know who played added speed to her steps. Abreast of the groundhog pottery kiln, she slowed and peered toward the outdoor stage.
On the platform, several musicians were gathered—some unpacking instruments, others adjusting microphones. Off to one side, a dark-haired man sat in a straight-backed chair, one foot braced on a scratched case. He leaned forward and strummed a dulcimer, the light wood instrument cradled on denim-covered thighs.
Cadence stood a dozen feet away and studied the talented player. His too-long hair was tied back, his shoulders were broad inside his western-cut shirt, and his legs were long and lean. Scuffed boots, faded jeans and a worn Harley-Davidson tee-shirt composed his attire. Definitely more attractive than her own outfit. Even from this distance, she spotted a posture that meant the man had an attitude…or was mysterious. A thrill ran over her skin.
Who was this guy? He’d definitely swagger when he walked. Yummy. At the thought, she stepped closer, wanting nothing between her and the performance.
Long fingers picked the strings in a heated crescendo—note on teasing note, twang on shivery twang, strum on driving strum. He ended the song with a flourish, right hand arcing upward as the last note hung on the early morning air.
How did he know exactly how she felt on nights when everyone in Mountain View either had a date or was home curled next to a spouse? The isolation of being solo at the drive-in or enduring the knowing smile of a sympathetic waitress. His song wrapped all those feelings tight around her heart and squeezed. She inhaled, and the backs of her eyes stung.
Hadn’t she learned her lesson about musicians from the way Dale deserted her when his band got the chance to go on the road? Three years running, and he hadn’t yet steered the tour bus through his hometown.
The stranger laid a hand over the strings, rolled his shoulders, and lifted his head. Piercing brown eyes scanned the area, surveying the other musicians, and his gaze locked with hers. For a suspended moment, his gaze roved along her length, widened, and then returned to her face.
Under his scrutiny, she shifted her feet and tugged at the sides of her skirt. Her period costume didn’t exactly show off her figure to its best. Not that the fact should matter, but she couldn’t look away and chose to ignore the warning bells ringing in her head.
Love Under the Harvest Moon A Sweet Romance Anthology (guest post and GIVEAWAY) Roane Publishing
HM Blitz Button (1).jpg
It is my pleasure to share a guest post by the authors of this anthology of sweet romance short stories, as they answer...
What makes you know it's fall? or... What dish do you look forward to the most at Thanksgiving?
T.E. Hodden
Being English, Autumn could be heralded by the first frosts or new sports season. But more so than any of these, or Halloween, it is Bonfire Night, and paying a penny for the guy, that is quintessentially Autumnal. Bonfires, history, fireworks, and sparklers.
*-*-*-*
Nemma Wollenfang:
In my back garden, there’s a humongous Beech tree. One of the biggest in the area. It’s the last to go into leaf, and the last to drop its leaves, so it’s hardly a reliable indicator of when Fall has begun. However, its resident family of squirrels always seem to know, they go into a gathering frenzy. More than once I’ve gone into the garden and had them bark at me from the lower branches and begin to pelt twigs and nutshells at my head! Just because I’ve disturbed them. Never mind that I’m only there to refill their feeder, kindly providing them with extra ammunition. Under that tree is not a good place to sit and read at this time of year. In early summer they’re okay, and have been known to feed from my hand, but when Fall hits they just go crazy.
*-*-*-*
Patricia Crisafulli:
I know it’s fall when the wind picks up, rustling the branches of the maples trees along the parkway, tossing my hair in my eyes, and sending me back inside for a sweater before I venture out on a walk. More than anything else, it is the quality—and quantity—of that wind that makes me know the seasons are changing. The stirring of the air marks transitions—a literal change of scenery from the deep green of late summer, to the first yellows, oranges, and reds of autumn, and then the bare brown of November. If I could, I’d spread my arms and soar right along with it, to wherever that wind would take me.
*-*-*-*
Claire Davon:
I rarely wash my car. I tell myself that it’s to preserve water under the desert conditions that exist in my adopted home city of Los Angeles, but the truth is that I don’t…I just don’t. Popular belief would have it that we have one season. Not so! We do have (some) weather. Fall is when you might just see this strange stuff called rain fall from the sky. It’s great! Free car wash! Since Southern Californians usually go from July to October without rain it is the single best indicator that a new season has arrived. That’s how I know it’s fall here in the land of sunshine.
*-*-*-*
Laura Lamoreaux / T.L. French:
Dish I look forward to the most at Thanksgiving:
My first Thanksgiving in Texas, there were a lot of dishes around the table that I had never tried before—a deep fried wild turkey that somebody’s husband had shot a few days ago, cornbread stuffing, and sweet potato soufflé. Each dish was like a revelation—but none more so than the sweet potato soufflé. At home in Arizona, the only thing I had seen people do with sweet potatoes was that thing with the marshmallows on top. Topped with toasted pecans and gobs of brown sugar, this soufflé is all of the highlights of fall, plus an extra helping of Southern charm. The wonder of new friendships, and the adventure of starting life in a new place, will always be captured for me in the taste of sweet potato soufflé.
