Austtralia Burns (The Wild Rose Press Charity Anthology) Vol. 1 featuring Darcy Lundeen's "The Relaxation Response"

Image by Sierra Clark from Pixabay

As I've said before...

I am proud to announce that the generous folks at The Wild Rose Press...from authors to editors to the owners...have compiled a three-volume anthology to raise money to help the poor folks in Australia. The authors (48, I believe!) donated a short story and the staff busted their buns to get them ready for publication in a matter of weeks.

I wanted to share excerpts from some of the short stories I was privileged to read. I will post over the next few days and I ask that you help spread the word.

Ideally, purchasing directly from The Wild Rose Press will garner the most money for the fund, since there will not be the cut that goes to AMZ, but unfortunately, the shipping is fairly steep unless several copies are being purchased.

The Relaxation Response

Darcy Lundeen

Excerpt

The elevator lurched to a stop, putting a merciful end to the conversation, and he let her get out first, then followed as he nodded politely to her.

“Well, good night.”

“Good night.” Janie stopped before her door.

As she fished in her bag for her key, she cautiously watched him from the corner of her eye to see where he went. He paused at an apartment four doors away. Ah. That was where he lived. Apartment 8-E.

Janie entered her foyer and closed the door behind her. Down the hall, his door closed, too. She shook her head with regret. What a shame he was like so many of the other rising young executive-types she’d met, all smooth lines and polished surfaces.

For a moment, the possibility crossed her mind that perhaps she might be wrong, perhaps he might somehow be different underneath, maybe a little less sophisticated and secure than he seemed.

“After all, you can’t always judge a book by its cover,” she intoned softly as she kicked off her shoes and hurried into the living room to describe the latest, totally boring events of the day to her two fishy confidants.

But it was just a passing thought, and in the case of people like Glenn Spencer, she wasn’t really sure that she believed it.

Just in case you've missed all of the times I've said this before, here it is again...

The Lark
by
Gabbi Grey

Shelby was reaching for the door handle when Lark placed a hand on her arm, stilling her. Turning to meet her lover’s gaze, Shelby sucked in a breath at the intensity she met.
“I really  missed you, Shel. More than I can say.”
God damn, no more tears. “I missed you too. Skype is great, but having you here is better.” Never mind that there’d been only two Skype sessions and half a dozen calls over the whole two months. Lark had been on the front lines for most of that time with little rest. When she had time off, she tended to crash , sleep for hours, inhale some food, then go right back to sleep. Shelby understood, but it didn’t stop her from wanting more contact.

Tall Tales

by

Laura Strickland

Excerpt

The oldsters—six in number besides Deacon—exchanged dour looks with one another.  Not one of them there hadn’t heard the “Mongolian” story at least a dozen times.  True, it wasn’t always the same: sometimes Deacon exaggerated one detail or another, turning the Mongolian into a professional wrestler or the noodles into a tasty can of stew.
Wiley, who’d been the town’s grease monkey until he retired, pulled a stogie from his pocket and then put it away again, hastily. They were allowed to smoke out on the porch, but if he lit up in the store, Eric Nielson’s wife, Donna, would come down on him like ten exes.  Wiley thought about going on home, but the rain drummed on the roof of the store with the intensity of a maniacal rock drummer.  He also considered calling Deacon on the veracity of his stories, telling him he was full of hot air, but bit his tongue instead.
“Well then,” Deacon started up again, wheezing like a bagpipe, “did I ever tell you ’bout the time Martians landed in the back forty out at Henderson’s farm? A clear night it was, and I was walking home after delivering Elmer Wright’s kid. Not his blood kid, you understand, but the goat his prize nanny was carrying. She was having trouble giving birth, and Elmer knew what a deft hand I was with small stock.  He sent his boy Timmy running to fetch me and I delivered him a fine, strapping billy goat, too big in the head for his ma to manage alone.”
You’re big in the head, Wiley thought with a wave of annoyance.  Why couldn’t the old fella let someone else get a word in edgewise? “Anybody want a game of checkers?” he proposed, hoping to head off the remainder of the Martian story.
“Now hold on, young fellow, you just listen. No need to get all impatient.” Deacon broke into a wide grin, which didn’t do his face any favors.  The man had lost his dentures years ago, and beneath the battered old cap he always wore, he was all gums and wrinkles. “Listen up and you might learn something.”

Excerpt:

The sun lit the horizon in pinks and purples, chasing away the dark blue of night. It was almost time for them to turn the keys over to the day shift. Joanna snored lightly from the passenger side.
Shay yawned. After the long night, she was tired. But it was a good tired, knowing she made a difference in people’s lives.

A Witch’s Protocol
by
Tena Stetler

 Excerpt

A month later, Megan braved the Council's hearing and escaped with a strong warning and probation. She'd never used magic so irresponsibly before, and looking back, she wasn't sure what had happened. One minute she was furious and casting Zack aside, the next all hell broke loose. Of course, she didn't admit that to the Council or the punishment would—she didn't want to think about it. She straightened, held her head high, and thanked her lucky stars, determined that her loss of control wouldn't happen again. To prove it to herself, the next morning she drove back to the park for a run. Maybe the good-looking guy will be there again. Oh no, stop right there, no more relationships. I can't afford more trouble.
Stepping out of the car, she started through her stretching routine and glanced up. There he stood, not ten feet in front of her—shoulder-length wavy blond hair tousled by the wind, wide muscular shoulders narrowing to… She licked her lips. The dude who played Thor has nothing on this guy. A furry black dog followed at the man's heels. For a split second, Megan considered ducking back into the car.
One hand on his waist and the other stretched over his head, Braiden bent slowly from side to side and front to back. He looked up, a genuine smile curving his full lips. “Hi there, nice to see you again. Megan, right?”
Too late. She groaned. She didn't have the self-discipline to walk away. Besides, it would be rude. “Morning. How are you?”
