“Oh, yeah.” With his pants off, Frankie wore nothing but a deep V-neck and bright underwear. He stretched his arms over his head, filling his bed, and casually scratched his balls. “I dig the foreign-exchange thing. Russian, huh? What was the last one, Greek?”

“Yeah.” Jeremy had a thing for exchange students. So what? They always seemed nice. Not only that, but they were the only gays in school who might also be virgins. “My friend Austin has to work, though, and I don’t think going alone would—”

“Oh, it doesn’t matter if you go alone. You’ll run into people you know.”

Jeremy shrugged. Other than Austin and Frankie, Jeremy hadn’t made too many friends at school. Between being gay and being from a small town, he always felt out of place. Twofer by Daisy Harris is a m/m story that features two college students who are struggling with both their classes and their sexual identities. Jeremy seems to be the opposite of his outgoing promiscuous roommate, Frankie, but they find out they have more in common than they believed.  Their connection is complicated by the fact that neither one wants to be the ‘top’ in their relationship, but they’re bright college students, of course they will find a solution!

This erotic m/m novella conjures up the carefree life that many experience when exploring the new vistas open when living on one's own for the first time.  The combination of shyness and bravado, plus the flowering of confidence gained when one starts feeling comfortable is artfully portrayed and the author did a great job of reminding me all of the hesitance and euphoria experienced in a new situation that eventually becomes familiar and comfortable.  There is a nice blend of sizzlingly carnal scenes and charmingly awkward situations in this coming of age story but one never gets a deep understanding of these two other than the fact that their education is being enhanced both in and out of the classrooms.  A fun and sexy light read.

Jeremy almost flinched as the man’s eyes met his, but somehow he managed not to. As he tilted his head back to take a long swallow of his beer, Jeremy’s mouth watered at the arch of his throat, the muscles working as he swallowed, a pair of sinful lips wrapped around the tip of the bottle like Jeremy suddenly wanted them wrapped around the tip of his cock, drinking him down as Jeremy emptied his balls against the back of his throat….

Signs of Life by Melanie Hansen is part of the ‘Resilient Love’ series and is a sequel to “Everything Changes”. This story follows Jeremy Speer who has had to cope with horrendous tragedies, with varying degrees of success. He crosses paths a couple of times with Kai Daniels, under far different circumstances, but each time is memorable. Kai has had his own demons to deal with, and the hot sexy man he is attracted to is very clear about what he is willing to accept and what his boundaries are. Life tends to throw its share of curveballs, however, and each man has to decide whether what he thinks he wants is truly what will work for the two of them.

The word I would use to describe this story is intense. There is intense emotionalism, intense intimacy, and intense relationships. This is one of those tales that plummets down and takes its characters through a crucible that threatens to destroy them before allowing them to gingerly explore whether they can even reach for happiness. The secondary characters are also intriguing and it was delightful to get a chance to see Jase and Carey from the first book in the series and I look forward to reading Loren’s story. The heartbreaking issues of abuse and the terrible cycle of poverty and oppression are sensitively depicted and I suspect that anyone reading this tale will need several tissues, just as I did. I was enthralled by the combination of angst and searing intimacy and I look forward to reading more chapters in this compelling series.

Outing the Quarterback by Tara Lain is a delightful m/m contemporary erotic novella that is the first in a new series. William Elliott Ashford III (aka Will Smith) has it all, a reputation as the star quarterback of his college football team, the captain of the cheerleading squad as his girlfriend, a custom blue Ferrari, and a great future in the business world. The problem is, he lives in a double closet—not only does he want to pursue a career in art instead, but he hasn’t publicly admitted that he’s gay. A competition for a highly coveted art scholarship pits him against Noah Zajack, the man who threatens to turn Will's world upside down and makes him take a good look at where’s he’s going. The question is, will he continue to live a lie or will he show the same courage in his personal life that he displays on the football field.

One can depend on getting a story that combines poignancy, heat and a thought-provoking challenge whenever one reads a story from this author. The delicious combination of carnality and humor leaven the harsh truths that are presented, as some of the realities that face those who are attracted to the same sex are explored. The wonderful imagery presented is excellent at reminding us that each person can see the same thing in quite different ways and I was struck by Will’s description of a scar as a vehicle to provide a contrast...”The scar reminds you of just how perfect the rest is”. What a wonderful way to focus on the positive aspect of something that others would judge as ugly. I enjoyed watching Will learn to cope with the challenges of living in his truth and thought that Noah was a beautiful example of triumph over adversity, particularly in his responses to his creepy teacher (who I would like to see get his own comeuppance as well). The intriguing aspect is that Will’s own life has had challenges to overcome, despite the superficial appearance of perfection, and again reminds us that nobody can truly know what another person’s life is like unless we live it. Another great story that explores the damage caused by discrimination even as it provides a heartwarming and entertaining read. I look forward to learning more about the secondary characters as they get their chance in the spotlight.

“So...you’d be up for doing this again if...” Nicky pushed like he wanted an ultimatum, some agreement that would make him gay enough or out enough to meet Michael’s standards.

No step-by-step guidelines would get Nicky to that place, though Michael wished Nicky were there already.

“Why don’t you think about it?” Michael watched the lake go by, the window cracked open and letting in the sweet summer smells. A comforting sadness twisted in his belly. “Call me when you figure it out.”

In Michael’s heart of hearts, he knew Nicky would call whether he’d decided anything about himself or not. Maybe it was Michael who needed a few days to cool off and get some perspective.

“Okay.” Nicky’s voice was quiet and perfectly serious when he muttered, “I will.”

Nothing but Smoke by Daisy Harris is Book 3 of the ‘Fire and Rain’ m/m erotic romance series that centers around a group of firefighters who are facing personal challenges.  Nicky O’Brian is barely coping with the heartache of his mother’s serious illness and his occasional forays into brief intimate encounters with random strangers are less than fulfilling.  Michael Larson is unwilling to get into another bad relationship and getting involved with the closeted Nicky seems to be the epitome of a undesirable goal but somehow they can’t manage to fight the attraction they have to one another.  Each man has to decide what he is willing to accept and whether to fight for what they have found with each other or to bow to the expectations of others.

This poignant story contrasts the plight of two different men who have vastly different interactions with their respective mothers and who are at different stages of dealing with their sexuality.  The intense pressure on Nicky eventually has to find an outlet and it is heartwrenching to accompany him on his journey as he searches for self-acceptance.  There are nice cameos of other characters introduced in this series and intriguing glimpses of quirky characters such as Michael’s mom but I had difficulty establishing a connection to either of the main characters and their relationship progressed in a very erratic fashion to me.  Sadly, I think this probably is an accurate representation of the progression of a relationship that is circumscribed by so many potentially negative factors but this story just didn’t resonate with me as much as the prior two did.

Logan pulled off his helmet, and Henri did the same. There was a moment when their eyes met, Logan grinning and Henri grinning right back. Henri realized Logan was going to kiss him a split second before it happened.

Henri jerked to get out of the way before their lips touched, and though Logan’s kiss landed at Henri’s hairline, a thrill of panic still ran through him. No way. Herpes! Logan couldn’t kiss him, and Henri definitely couldn’t kiss Logan back. Plenty of other guys would have taken the risk—especially if it was just a kiss—but Henri couldn’t.

“Oh.” Logan froze, his breath still in Henri’s hair. Slowly, he stepped back. “I’m sorry.”

“No. It’s fine.” Henri held his hands palms up, wishing he could explain in a few words, but the guys on the ridge above were already calling to them, hollering that it was time for lunch.

“I didn’t mean...” Logan turned away, hiding his expression. “I just mean it’s no big deal.” Shoulders curled forward, Logan headed up the stairs.

“Logan,” Henri called after him. He hated this. If things were different, he would have been on Logan from the second he saw what he was hiding under his shirt. He would have kissed him and even given his dick a squeeze for good measure. Now he’d be stuck with half explanations all weekend. “Wait up.”

After the Rain by Daisy Harris is Book 2 in the series ‘Fire and Rain’ and centers on firefighter Logan MacDonald, one of the youngest men to join the crew.  Logan is struggling to deal with his sexuality after finally facing that he prefers males but is handicapped by his age, his concern about his coworkers’ opinions and his unfamiliarity with the new town he is living in.  Henri Serre is on the rebound from a cheating ex who may have given him a communicable disease and not quite prepared to deal with a new partner who isn’t completely out.  A camping trip forces them in close proximity and the attraction that flares between the two tentatively flourishes but both men have to decide on what they want out of a relationship and whether that includes each other.
 
This erotic m/m romance continues after the events depicted in From the Ashes and follows the aftermath of a couple of failed relationships which demonstrate the futility of not following one’s heart.  Logan is a sweet naive character who is exploring his sexuality and Henri is defensive and wounded but somehow they find a way to reach a compromise.  There are plenty of sensual encounters but a few thought-provoking aspects that remind one of the importance of being able to trust one’s partner or deal with life-changing repercussions.  An enjoyable addition to the series.
