Earth is dead. Humanity survives by selling the only resource available—themselves. 2689 has signed away his rights as a living being and become décor, living artwork that rich aliens use to decorate their homes. It's a stable existence but a boring one. Until one day his owner plays host to three unexpected guests. Large, loud, and more potent than anything 2689 has ever experienced, this trio of ship-dwellers from the wrong side of the universe awakens a desire he can't ignore.

However, blissful days of sex and companionship with Brog, Desmodian, and Xavis come to an end when 2689 discovers a plot that could land the trio in jail...or worse. 2689 will have to make a choice—stay silent and allow three innocent lives to be ruined or give up his stable life to protect the ones he loves.

Pet fumbled his drink, creating a clink of glass against glass and spilling pink droplets onto the table’s surface. He had encountered Décor Preservation Services once before, at his first auction, when they evaluated his quality and determined what price to charge his buyers.

“And what does DPS want with us?”

Desmodian sounded too calm, considering the tremor Pet felt running through the hand on his head.

Vige scoffed. “Really? A trio of dirty ship-dwellers running around with one of their precious décor, and you don’t think they’re going to intervene?”

“We’ve done nothing wrong.” Xavis ruffled his feathers again, filling what little space remained in their alcove. “Pet was transferred to us legally. Anyone can check the license.”

In a different situation, Pet would have stroked the feathers back down, but he was too scared to do more than stare dumbly from person to person.

About the Author

D’Arcy Arden grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she attended creative art schools and was surrounded by beautiful country landscape. This combination cultivated an interest in literature, art, and the natural world around her. In college, she earned a Masters Degree in Fiction Writing, which primarily taught her that there is no one way to tell a good story. So, she turned around and went back for a degree in Animation as well. This love for both visual and written stories has given her a preference for stories that are memorable, easy to picture, and, most importantly, fun.

That was her main goal when she started writing The Fourth State of Matter—to provide readers with a fun story featuring the three S’s. Science, sex, and spaceships. It is her first published novel, but only the beginning of a great adventure.

Eye Candy by Pauline Allan (VBT, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

Eye Candy

by Pauline Allan
ADULT title

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: LGBTQ (MM Romance)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Gavin Rossi is one sexy piece of Eye Candy wrapped in a tight body and sweet smile. The hot breath on his neck, the mesmerizing rhythm as he rolls his hips, the strong chest rising and falling beneath his hands make for a distraction he’s terrified to see play out.

When Dutch Williamson feels a set of perfectly sculpted thighs slipping over his lap, the last thing his liquor-hazed brain registers is this is my future. The tempting piece of Eye Candy grinding on his lap is going to cut him at the knees, and he knows it.

This is a dance. This is a tease. God, this is so much more.

EXCERPT

The thought of going back to the crowded apartment after his shift made Mr. Stranger that much more important. Every customer counted as one step closer to being on his own. Granted, sharing a room with three guys didn’t compare to living on the streets, but dreams could change. Life meant more than a warm bed now.

The song switched. A new rhythm pulsed through the air, and they all bobbed their heads to the hypnotic vibe. Knowing the rhythm by heart, he stuffed the dark memories in his life into the hole where he’d pushed all the other messed-up experiences and focused on the gentleman’s wide-eyed expression.

Had his sexy new customer noticed the thickness behind his stretched white shorts? The way those eyes widened gave away the secret. Ah, two bets to one, the swelling behind that zipper had nothing to do with a balled-up sock.

Tingles sparked down his thighs when his toes finally tapped the rough tips of a pair of black boots. “Can I dance for you?”

Watching the man’s Adam’s apple bob before he nodded lent all the confidence anyone would ever need. Gavin filled his lungs and parted his knees, planted them on either side of Mr. Stranger’s lap, and gripped the back of the couch. Unruly silky waves tickled his cheek when he leaned forward.

“I can touch you, but you can’t touch me. Don’t grab my butt. Okay?” Jesus, he never wanted that to happen again.

Mr. Stranger cleared his throat. The guttural sound massaged the side of Gavin’s cheek, forcing him to dig his knees into the cushions.

“Got it.”

Rite of Summer by Tess Bowery (VBB, excerpt, review) Goddess Fish Tours

It is my pleasure to have a guest post from Tess Bowery today:

TB:  First off, thank you so much for hosting me today! I’m thrilled to have you on the tour, and to be able to ‘meet’ your readers.

I’ve been asked about publishing quite a bit, of course, and I’m happy to talk about the path I took to get to this point.

I’ve been writing stories since I was little; my mother has a handful of things I wrote when I was five and six that she refuses to let me burn. It took me thirty years from those first filled scribblers, though, to get to a point where I was willing and able to send a manuscript off to a publishing house and have it accepted.

My biggest obstacle on the path to getting a book out has always been a lack of confidence. I always used to make the excuse that I didn’t have enough time to sit down and write 90,000 words. Or that I didn’t have any original ideas. Compared to fighting off that firebreathing dragon, the rest of the process has been remarkably simple.

It’s so easy, especially for women, to believe that we’re not ‘good enough’ – to internalize all those messages that say that if we’re not publishing our first books by the age of twenty, bestsellers by twenty-five, we’re already all washed up. Or to look at the stack of well-thumbed favorites on the bedside table and say ‘I’ll never be able to write as well as Guy Kay / Stephen King / Nora Roberts / Margaret Atwood; why set myself up to fail?’

I used to flip through my folders of unfinished ideas and notes and think, ‘if only I were able to write this story the way I want it to be told.’ (If only I could cook like Julia Child, host like Martha Stewart, have the beauty of Halle Berry, etc etc etc… the demands we make on ourselves are so much stronger than anything coming from outside.)

The problem is, that quickly becomes a terrible feedback loop, where the negative self-talk leads to nervousness, which leads to half-assing something from fear of failure, which… leads to failure. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I got my sorely-needed kick in the pants from a friend of mine who read my amateur writing and fanfic. She asked a simple question, that became a complicated one: ‘have you ever tried writing something for publication? Then how do you know?’

And I had no answer.

At least, not one that didn’t boil down to ‘because I don’t believe that I can.’

(She’s the kind of friend who would kick my butt from here to Poughkeepsie if I tried that excuse, anyway.)

So I sat down to write, taking my favorite of the ideas scribbled down in my notebook. Having a passion for the subject matter helped, because it made the research fun. I could pretend that I was doing the entire thing purely for my own entertainment, which made it far less daunting to actually consider submitting.

To an editor.

Who would read and judge my writing.

(Doing some industry research helped. I carry a hefty dose of spite against those who’ve called LBGT representation an ‘unimportant minority interest.’ I operate very efficiently when ‘so there’ is part of the equation.)

The thing that I found the most helpful, after the initial ‘god no!’ reaction was over, was to enlist the help of some cheerleaders.

I conscripted my partner and a handful of very good friends into reading chapters of my first draft as they spooled out. Sometimes they commented, sometimes they didn’t. Even when they were quiet, the knowledge that I had them at my back was enough to make it easier, even once I was biting my nails waiting for replies from publishers.

The process becomes about taking that leap of faith, and learning to trust ourselves when we say that we have engaging stories to tell.

Come by www.tessbowery.com on June 2nd, 7 pm Eastern Time, to join me in the chatroom for the release party! I’ll have giveaways and prizes as well as interviews and a social hour. I look forward to seeing everyone!

Tess Bowery is an east coast writer of historical LBGT erotic romance (can it get more niche?) BLURB:

There are terrors worse than stage fright. Like falling in love.

Violinist Stephen Ashbrook is passionate about three things—his music, the excitement of life in London, and his lover, Evander Cade. It’s too bad that Evander only loves himself. A house party at their patron’s beautiful country estate seems like a chance for Stephen to remember who he is, when he’s not trying to live up to someone else’s harsh expectations.

Joshua Beaufort, a painter whose works are very much in demand among the right sort of people, has no expectations about this party at all. Until, that is, he finds out who else is on the guest list. Joshua swore off love long ago, but has been infatuated with Stephen since seeing his brilliant performance at Vauxhall. Now he has the chance to meet the object of his lust face to face—and more.

But changing an open relationship to a triad is a lot more complicated than it seems, and while Evander’s trying to climb the social ladder, Stephen’s trying to climb Joshua. When the dust settles, only two will remain standing...

EXCERPT

The man in the portrait was not classically handsome. His mouth was too full and his hair too red for that, his jawline perhaps a little too soft. But his eyes crinkled at the corners with secret mirth, as though sharing a very private joke with the viewer, and those lush and generous lips curled up at one corner. He sat in a smock and his shirtsleeves, a palette on the table behind him. His head tilted very slightly to the side, like he was listening to some secret, lively song. His eyes caught and held Stephen, grey as stormclouds over the cliffs, a hint of blue that was the clear sky breaking through, and a knowing look that struck some chord deep within that Stephen could not immediately name.

He wanted-

Well, he wanted a great many things. But never before had a portrait been responsible for a curl of longing or desire twisting its way up from the center of his being, some vague and wistful sense of thwarted desire focused on that arresting stare.

I wonder if he would look at me that way in life.

I wonder who he is.

A faint scuff of feet behind was all that gave Stephen warning before someone spoke, and he managed neither to whip around in surprise, nor jump like a child caught where he shouldn’t be. “He’s not a particularly good-looking fellow, to deserve such lengthy scrutiny.”

The voice was an unfamiliar one, a warm rich tenor that verged on a deeper range, a faint northern accent coloring the tone.

“I suppose not,” Stephen replied, pausing to allow his heart to slow before he introduced himself. “If you value men solely based on looks. But there is more life in his expression than in all the other portraits put together. Either the sitter was a man of uncommon vivacity, or the painter was exceptionally fond of him.”

He turned and looked at the man standing behind him.

His hair was shorter now, and he was dressed for dinner, his cravat impeccably tied and tucked into a cream waistcoat. The man from the portrait stepped in to the gallery, framed by a shaft of light that fell across the floor from the hall. His eyes had not been exaggerated. They had been perhaps underplayed, and that grey-blue gaze regarded Stephen with a peculiar intensity. He was a little taller than Stephen, his frame of very pleasing proportions, and had a controlled energy to his walk that suggested strength lying beneath the layers of wool and linen.

“Or he was his own painter,” the newcomer said, his lip quirking up in that selfsame knowing smile, “and both irredeemably prone to vanity and in desperate need of an honest friend to check him in his fancy.”

My review:

4 out of 5 stars

Rite of Summer by Tessa Bowery is an erotic m/m and m/m/m historical romance that is the start of the ‘Treading the Boards’ series.  Stephen Ashbrook and Evander Cade are an established couple who have managed a comfortable life under the patronage of the Earl of Coventry, who is impressed by Evander’s talents as a composer but merely tolerates Stephen as an accompanist.  A house-party changes the duo’s lives forever, as an encounter with painter Joshua Beaufort, who has admired Stephen from afar, changes the dynamics of their relationship and forces some unpalatable truths to come to light.  The societal persecution of gay men intensifies with horrifying and discouraging impact, and Stephen’s world spirals out of control and he must find the strength and conviction to follow his heart, no matter what obstacles are in his way.

This very spicy tale gives an intriguing look at a frighteningly unbending society with distressingly fatal consequences for those who don’t comply with the purported requirements for acceptable behavior.  It was fascinating to see the courtship dance from two different perspectives against the backdrop of aristocratic England and the contrast between wickedly carnal intimacies and staid bucolic pursuits in the country was deftly presented.  The ending felt a bit rushed to me as the various resolutions are rapidly detailed but it was lovely to see some of the characters mature.  I was drawn into the story and enjoyed the interactions with some of the secondary characters and I would be curious to find out more about a few of them, so I will be on the lookout for sequels.

A copy of this story was provided to me for review.

Pack of Lies by Lucy Felthouse (ADULT title) Guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY

The Research (Part Two) for Pack of Lies (ADULT title)

by Lucy Felthouse

(@cw1985) #werewolf #paranormal #erotic #romance

Hello and welcome to the fourth day of my blog tour for Pack of Lies, and thanks so much to my host for the day.

Wow, I can hardly believe that I did so much research for a book that it warrants more than one blog post. But this one did—it’s a 96,000 word thriller with historical elements, sex, romance and werewolves. And the werewolves, as the main characters, had to be paid very close attention to—for example, where would they change on the full moon?

The answer to this question explains why, last September, I found myself wearing a hard hat and clambering down into an old cave and mine system. Not by myself, I hasten to add, but with a very nice local gentleman, who generously gave up a few hours of his Sunday to take me and my other half down (who was also very generous with his time and patience as I dragged us off into the Peak District in the name of research!) into the cave system so I could see if it was feasible for two grown men to go down there and change into werewolves on a full moon.

Fortunately, after much banging of heads on low ceilings (thank goodness for the hard hats!) and crawling about in dark and narrow passages, I discovered it was indeed, feasible. Granted, it’s a fictional novel so it would have been okay to make it up, or stretch the truth, but I’m nothing if not a perfectionist. So imagine my relief when, having finally reached a cavern where I could stand up straight, I discovered that two large werewolves could indeed, prowl around in the darkness. Even better, the lack of space in the passages we’d entered through was such that, in werewolf form, they wouldn’t be able to get back out. Not until they’d changed back into human form. I can’t say why this is important without giving away some of the plot, so you’ll just have to read it and see!

Check out the photos on my Pinterest board

The book has been incredibly well received so far, with lots of four and five star reviews—so if you’re a paranormal romance fan, I hope you’ll check it out! Also, don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

Happy Reading,

Lucy x

Blurb:

Werewolf brothers Matthew and Isaac have lived in the peaceful village of Eyam all their lives. The villagers know what happens every full moon, and are happy to keep their secret. But their privacy comes at a cost—neither brother has taken a lover in almost four hundred years.

Then at the full moon, a sheep is slaughtered on Eyam Moor, by what could only be an animal. A large, vicious animal. Even the brothers’ staunchest supporters begin to have their doubts. Meanwhile Isaac is smitten by a handsome newcomer to the village, while a vivacious visitor is happy to offer Matthew her all.
As they indulge their lust, they must clear their names and convince their neighbours that they aren’t also letting their baser instincts out to play.

Inside Scoop:  This book contains sizzling scenes of both M/M and M/F sex.

Excerpt:

As Matthew and Isaac Adams opened the front door to their house, the telephone started ringing. Matthew sighed. “Typical. No rest for the wicked. I’ll answer it, you go and get ready for work.”

Isaac nodded and headed off to do as his brother advised. Matthew, the older of the two, walked toward the ringing phone and snatched it off the hook. Then, remembering that the person on the other end of the line would have no idea what a rough night he’d just had, he made the effort to inject some politeness into his tone.

“Hello? Adams residence.” Isaac had told him time and time again that the last part about the residence was old-fashioned, that people didn’t say that anymore, but Matthew couldn’t seem to shake it.

“Hello, Matthew? It’s Richard.” The village vicar’s voice, even though he’d only spoken four words, sounded strained, almost panicked. “You boys just get back?”

“Yeah, a moment ago. Why, what’s up?”

“I, uh… I got a call. A dead sheep has been found up on the moor. Not just dead. Mutilated. Like a wild animal attack.”

An unpleasant feeling wormed its way under Matthew’s skin and his stomach flipped. “Oh?” He paused, then figured he had nothing to gain by not saying the next words he wanted to. “You don’t think it was us?”

The vicar’s gasp was instant, one of genuine surprise. “Lord, no! Absolutely not. I just phoned to let you know and I was wondering if you’d come up there with me and take a look. You and Isaac are probably more qualified than anyone else in the village to tell what did this.”

“Isaac has to work, he just went to get ready. But yes, I’ll come up. I’ll let my brother know where I’m going, then I’ll be straight over. Are you at the rectory?”

“Yes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. Thanks, Matthew. Bye.”

“Goodbye.”

Matthew hung up the phone with another sigh. The horrible feeling that had crept under his skin and taken over his gut seemed as if it was there to stay, and it was never a good sign. The vicar’s news was surprising, yes, but he also had an inkling that it was going to spell trouble, or at the very least inconvenience, for him and his brother.

Pulling in a deep breath in an attempt to calm his jangling nerves, Matthew walked upstairs and toward his brother’s bedroom. The door was closed. He knocked. “You decent?”

“Yeah,” Isaac replied, “close enough.”

Stepping into the room, Matthew looked at his brother. He was half-dressed, ready for his shift at the doctor’s surgery, where he was a general practitioner. “Sorry to interrupt, mate, but that was Richard on the phone. They’ve found a mutilated sheep up on the moor, and he’s asked me to go with him to check it out.”

Isaac paused with one arm pushed into his shirtsleeve. “He doesn’t think—”

Matthew cut him off. “No. He was quite adamant about that. He just thought we’d be able to help figure out what did it. I explained that you’ve got to go to work, though. I’m going to head across there now and go up with him.”

“I could phone in, let them know I’ll be late.”

Matthew held up his hand. “There’s no need, brother. Relax. Just go to work and help the sick people. I’ll let you know what—if anything—I find out.”

Opening his mouth, then closing it again, Isaac seemed to have thought better of whatever he was going to say. He continued to dress. “All right, I will. But make sure you let me know what happens. Send me a text or something, and I’ll phone you as soon as I have a gap in between patients.”

Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. Hated mobile phones, actually. Technology was one of the things he disliked most about modern-day life, though he realized it was a necessary evil. It solved as many problems for him and his brother as it created, so he dealt with it as best he could. Fortunately, Isaac had always had an affinity with computers and phones, so he tutored his older brother.

“Yeah, all right. I’d better go and find my phone first then, eh?”

Smirking at his brother’s rolled eyes, he left the room and headed for his own bedroom, where he thought he’d left the device the previous night, before he and Isaac had headed for the caves. Immediately spotting the mobile phone—which Isaac often made a point of telling him was akin to a brick—he grabbed it and stuffed it into his pocket and made his way downstairs.

Retrieving his keys from the hook by the front door, he called up to his brother. “I’m going now, Isaac. I’ll see you after my shift at the pub. I’m working until closing time.”

“Okay. Don’t forget to keep me posted!”

“I won’t.” As if he could forget. The dead sheep was going to be a big thing, he just knew it. The vicar might not think he and his brother had anything to do with it, but some of the other villagers might. When there was no proof either way, just his and Isaac’s word, it was understandable, really. Since he and his brother changed into wolves every full moon, it was a natural conclusion to draw. Particularly since normal wolves had been extinct in England for over five hundred years.

Moro's Price by MC Hana (review) ADULT title

 Moro's Price

Warning: This is an ADULT m/m erotic science fiction title that is very spicy and dark and is not for squeamish or easily offended readers.

Blurb:
Cheated out of freedom and destined for a lifetime of servitude, gladiator and slave Moro Dalgleish escapes from a brutal arena. Valier Antonin, a lonely student, is tormented by dark urges he's forbidden to indulge. When the two men meet on the skyscraper roof where Moro plans to commit suicide, Valier offers a bargain: sex with Valier will infect Moro with the sentient symbiont endemic in Valier's part-human race, with death the likely result.

As one of the infection's rare survivors, Moro learns he is now a free Camalian citizen. He's also effectively married to Valier, crown prince of the Camalian Commonwealth. Expecting a shallow encounter with a doomed slave, Valier learns Moro is his Knife, the mate who can stabilize Valier's undisciplined mind and make him fit to rule.

My review:

5 out of 5 stars

Moro's Price by MC Hana is the darkly erotic m/m science fiction story that features Moro Dagliesh, a tortured man who has been subjected to the sadistic machinations of two different masters.  A desperate attempt to escape his torment results in his becoming embroiled with a seductive individual named Val who promises his release through an entity named Cama, who will either destroy him or secure his safety.  Unfortunately, there are more forces at play than just the readily visible ones and not only Moro’s survival but that of entire planets may be at stake in an intricate game whose rules are only known to a few elite beings.

This mesmerizing novella is a fantastic combination of science fiction and sensuality which explores the dark seduction of pain and pleasure.  The remarkable combination of fantastical beings and imaginative worlds and situations are blended together in a very compelling tale that provides both a very spicy read and a wonderful romance.  There are plenty of twists and turns as more and more charismatic beings are introduced and the highs and lows give one the sensation of a roller-coaster ride even as one roots for Moro to have a life free from the torment that he has been experiencing for so long.  Be warned, there are pretty intense and disturbing sexual situations but these become overshadowed by the fascinating developments as more and more conflicts are revealed.  This tale reminds me of the dark erotic fantasy ‘Kushiel” series by Jacqueline Carey which was just as mesmerizing and every time I browse through “Moro’s Price” to check a detail, I am again captured in the spell of Moro and Val’s story.  There are so many intriguing threads that I am hopeful that there will be many more sequels because even though this story had a satisfying ending, I want to know more about all of these characters and I will definitely be on the lookout for other works by this very talented author.

Pen Name: Doctor Chicken by K.C. Burn (Virtual Book Tour, review, GIVEAWAY, GFT) ADULT TITLE

I am delighted to have a guest post by the author of the ADULT m/m title, Pen Name - Doctor Chicken
(and I love the two titles I have read from her 'Toronto' series, Cop Out and Cover Up
My reviews for those are at this link and this one.

From KC Burn...

For Vinnie and Stratford, food figures very prominently in their relationship. After all, they meet at a cooking class, and there are a number of significant events and milestones that revolve around food in Pen Name – Doctor Chicken.

The cooking class is a little bit of me. In another life, I think I could have been a chef. I do like to cook, I like to experiment, and heaven knows I love to eat. However, I absolutely hate cleaning up after cooking, and given the demands on my time between writing and the day job, I’m not interested in making things that are too complicated or that are time-consuming to prepare.  Maybe one day, when I can afford little gremlins to clean up after my cooking experiments, I’ll get into more gourmet cooking. But for now, it’s all about simplicity and ease.

With that in mind, I’ve got a little recipe for you! It’s fast, easy, and tasty, although I bet it isn’t one that Vinnie and Stratford got in their cooking class. But it is certainly simple enough that even Stratford could make it without damaging himself or others. I make it all the time for parties.

Cheese Balls
3 pkg soft cream cheese (can use low fat)
2 tbsp grated onion
½ tsp dry mustard
4-5 drops hot sauce
½ tsp paprika
4 c. shredded cheddar

Mix cream cheese, onion, paprika, mustard, and hot sauce together.  Mix in cheddar. Divide in 2 and shape into balls. If desired, garnish with parsley and chopped walnuts. Serve with assorted crackers and celery sticks. Tastes even better if you refrigerate for a day before serving.

So tell me, what’s your favourite thing to cook/bake? And it’s okay if it’s take out ; )

BLURB:

Sometimes Stratford Dale feels like Doctor Chicken consumes his life. It’s his pen name for a series of wildly popular children’s books. They were his brainchild; he meant for them to be a way to pay his many bills while he pursued his dream of publishing graphic novels. But the Doctor Chicken contract was a raw deal. Instead, he churns out book after book for a pittance, leaving him broke and no closer to his dreams.

Stratford’s dreams of love have fared no better, but he’s still trying. After yet another disastrous date, he’s intrigued by a man going into a cooking class—so he takes the class too. Vinnie Giani is a successful, self-made man who is charmed by Stratford’s bow ties, sharp humor, and clumsiness—which leads to an opportunity to take Stratford in for stitches. Vinnie is, above all, responsible, having taken on the care of his mother and sisters from a young age. Perhaps it’s natural when he begins to treat Stratford more as a child who needs a parent than as an equal partner. But when Vinnie tries to “fix” Stratford’s career woes—including the Doctor Chicken problem—and ends up making the situation worse, their fledgling relationship may not withstand the the strain created by blame and lies.

EXCERPT

“ABBY, I swear, I’m never going to find my own Thad.”

Stratford should have waited until he’d gotten home to call Abby, because the wind was going to freeze his fingers into a permanent curl around his phone. Gloves, scarfs, and wind-resistant fabrics hadn’t suited his super-sexy Barry-bait outfit. Unfortunately, the Barry bait had been too enticing. Or the wrong kind of enticing. Sluts might wear shirts and pants as tight as his, but they didn’t wear bow ties, did they? At least he was able to grab a latte on the way home. Aside from being one of his few expensive indulgences, it was keeping his left hand warmish.

“Of course you will. Are you sure you’re not judging him too harshly? You sometimes have unrealistic expectations.”

He snorted. No one had to know he’d had a sneaking little thought that he’d so dazzle Barry with his erudition and joie de vivre that the man would immediately become smitten and fall in love. Besides, Abby already knew he was a hopeless romantic.

“There was a certain romantic touch to the butt plug discussion over shrimp devolving into a dessert discussion on whether silicone, rubber, or glass was preferable for dildos. A dead giveaway, if I’d been paying attention. I mean, anyone who has enough information to write a dissertation on dildo production materials is either way too oversexed for me or hasn’t had enough sex with other people… and probably for an excellent reason, as I discovered.”

An older man in a fedora, walking in the opposite direction, gave Stratford a raised-brow look, and Stratford simply rolled his eyes and shrugged.

“Ford, you slut. You didn’t! On a first date?” Abby’s light, teasing tone hadn’t the slightest hint of censure, but it could have. After all, Stratford had had his slutty moments, to be sure, but slutty wasn’t the best way to snag a boyfriend. He didn’t think. Or at least, not too slutty. What man didn’t like a hint of slut? Monogamous slut. If there was such a thing.

“Uh, hello, you still there?”

“What, oh, yes. Sorry.” Stratford had to stop drifting to his fantasies of a fairytale ending.

“You dog. You did it, didn’t you? And how was it?”

“No. Really, I didn’t. I mean, he blew me a little bit.”

This time it was Abby who snorted. “Blew you a little bit? Kind of like being a little bit preggers, you know.”

“It’s never a good sign when you have to say ‘watch the teeth,’ followed closely by ‘don’t bite that.’ Puts a damper on things.”

“You think?” Loud gales of laughter buffeted him across the wireless waves, and Stratford pursed his lips. Why was his dating life such a fucking joke?

After moving from Toronto to Florida for her husband to take a dream job, she discovered a love of gay romance and fulfilled a dream of her own – getting published. After a few years of editing web content by day, and neglecting her supportive, understanding hubby and needy cat at night to write stories about men loving men, she was uprooted yet again and now resides in California. Writing is always fun and rewarding, but writing about her guys is the most fun she’s had in a long time, and she hopes you’ll enjoy them as much as she does.

My review

4.5 out of 5 stars

Pen Name - Doctor Chicken by KC Burn is a yummy m/m contemporary erotic romance that showcases Stratford Dale and Vincent (Vinnie) Giani who are both relatively shy and somewhat inexperienced about the dating scene.  A series of mishaps embarrass Stratford which only endears him to Vinnie but their blossoming relationship is handicapped by their failure to be completely honest with one another.  They will have to decide if each can be what the other man needs.

I enjoyed the interaction between these two males and the fact that they were both tentative in their approach to dating yet willing to step outside of their comfort zone once they found someone worth fighting for.  The humor and warmth that each display makes this a heartwarming yet lighthearted romance that still addresses serious issues such as exploitation, workplace harassment, and rejection by those who should be part of your support structure.  Being a person who can trip over my own feet, I sympathize with poor Stratford’s mishaps and I thought that both of these guys are people who I would love to have as friends and felt that the author did a great job of creating an entertaining story but, I think the major conflict was forced and the end was less than satisfactory and abrupt and I would have preferred a more detailed resolution so I really hope there is another story that will pick up where this one ends.

The Pack or the Panther by Tara Lain, review (ADULT title)

This is an ADULT m/m erotic romance

The Pack or the Panther by Tara Lain is a paranormal m/m story that introduces Cole Harker, alphanta, i.e. next leader, of his werewolf clan, destined to secure a pack alliance through a mating arranged by his alpha father. Unfortunately, the alphanta of the Marketo pack, Analiese, has her own plans which do not include tying herself to Cole. Her sexy and limber half-brother, Paris, reciprocates Cole’s attraction but has no interest in clan politics, partly because of his solitary panther nature. When Paris’ life and freedom are threatened, Cole proves that his actions speak louder than his tongue-tied words and his clan is forced to recognize that his heart has been given to a very unique lover.

I am always delighted to see a new story by this author who does such an excellent job of combining a deliciously erotic story with glimpses of the difficulties facing those who love someone of the same sex. It is always difficult to see the rejection from family and so-called friends that must be overcome in order to have the freedom to pursue one’s heart but this story provides suspense and heat as the main characters work out the challenges in their respective packs. It was fascinating to watch the spell that Paris casts over those who see him perform even though it was very creepy to see the lengths his stalker would go through in order to have him. Hopefully there will be future stories featuring these very different shapeshifters.

Spell Cat (adult title) and adventures in giving blood

Spell Cat:  The Aloysius Tales

by Tara Lain is an ADULT tale that is the delightful m/m paranormal romance story that introduces the remarkable Professor Killian Barth, the most powerful male witch in ten generations.  Killian is expected to marry and have children with Lavender Karonoff, the female witch who is expected to be the most powerful female witch in their community.  The problem is that each of them is attracted to human males, something that is virtually forbidden by the Council.  Killian is prepared to sacrifice his attraction to the openly gay Professor Blaine Genneau but his recently acquired familiar, the feline Aloysius has an opinion about almost everything and does his best to guide Killian to enlightenment about a variety of issues.

This fun m/m read combines a combination of quirky characters, paranormal elements and a demonstration of the dangers of bigotry in an enjoyable romantic tale.  There are great scenes that demonstrate the feline Aloysius’ ability to communicate his desires without having to speak a word of English and it was entertaining to read about the students who were in Professor Barth’s class more for his appearance than for his subject matter.  This was a great introduction to an entertaining series and a lovely combination of sizzling and sensual encounters and an emotional tale that details the struggle between following the expectations of family and community and being true to one’s own self.  I look forward to reading more about these beings (especially the cat!).

I received a copy of this enjoyable read in exchange for an honest review.

*****
I have always felt guilty about not donating blood but traditionally I weighed less than the cut-off.  Unfortunately, that is no longer true and, searching to find something to make me feel a little less glum about the fact that I am struggling with the middle-aged (yes, I am the person who refuses to grow up so I can call it middle-aged if I want to!) weight gain...I thought I'd go with a friend who donates regularly.

The folks working at the center are very warm and friendly and tried to make me as comfortable as possible.  (we won't discuss the other person who was there to donate who threatened to block the door before I could run out, lol)  An i.d. is required and there is a long list of questions to complete (hmm, never thought about the impact of getting tattoos or traveling out of the country) and they check your hemoglobin levels to see if there is an immediate reason to decline your gift.

I do admit that the needle being used is pretty impressive but it does make the blood flow out pretty quickly and the nice foam ball that you get to squeeze is one of those aids for reducing stress.  I was fascinated watching the end process where there are special crimping tools to separate the tubing and they make sure the blood is well-mixed with anticoagulant and then make tiny little packets of the blood remaining in the tubing (the majority of the blood goes into the bag) that are used for cross-matching.

There was a variety of juices and water to choose from as well as muffins, fresh fruit and, for some reason, they had nachos ingredients which my friend told me was not the typical fare.  There were snack bars and nuts and fresh veggies and even ice cream cones in the freezer.  Everything went well as we sat and chatted for awhile and consumed the various goodies.

Ok...you are given a list of instructions of what NOT to do after giving blood, foremost of which is no strong exertion.  My friend crochets hats to donate to the City of Hope for the cancer patients and their office is on the next floor above the blood donation office...so we took the stairs to go up to the next floor.  Duh...exertion?  I got to the top of the stairs and I was breathing a little heavily and thought...wow, I am really out of shape!  Then I started seeing spots before my eyes and got nauseous...and the door to the office we were going to was locked.

I sat down on the floor of the hallway and pondered the advantage of putting my head between my knees versus the likelihood of losing the apple juice, fruit and muffin I had just eaten.  Well, to make a long story short, the office wasn't actually closed and there happened to be a doctor just exiting who started inquiring why a very pale woman was sitting with her eyes closed on the floor outside of the office.

It turns out there is something called a vasovagal response that I tried to make sure I had all of the symptoms of...my heart rate dropped as well as my blood pressure and I broke out into a cold sweat.  They put me in a wheelchair and took me into the office and laid me down on one of their exam tables and I was much improved in about 15 minutes.  I was terribly embarrassed to create such a dramatic scene over a little thing like donating blood but I guess it's not something that I will do very often...and I certainly won't climb any stairs afterward!  Not an auspicious first attempt at donating blood...and, if my hubby has his way...it will be the first and only time that I ever do it...but I do urge people who weigh more than 120 lbs. and who are healthy enough, to donate...there is definitely a need for it.  Just don't climb any stairs afterward!
