 Excerpt:

  Chapter 22
Since Always…

“Hank, this is what I want you to do.”  Captain Stein stepped closer and looked Hank squarely in the eyes with a very serious look, as if to say, this is damn important to me, so listen carefully and do what I tell you to do.  He had Hank’s attention anyway with everything he revealed without Hank making any effort to find out for himself.  All this information was just ‘falling into his lap’.
“Yes, sir.  What can I do?”  Hank was anxious to know what Stein had in mind for him to do.
“I want you to meet with the girl, Roberta.  Get to know her first; don’t get in too much of a hurry.  We don’t want to spook her into keeping her mouth shut.  Use your friendship with Max to get her confidence; she’ll want to know everything about him.  Use that to find out what you can about how much she knew or Max knew about what Schoellkopf was doing.  Find out who he was talking with and meeting with.  They should know who was coming to the house.   She probably knows what they did with the records from his office.  We need everything, every scrap.  Get any clue you might be able to schmooze out of her that could help us find the bastards who are still on the loose out there.”
Hank was dumbfounded---speechless---couldn’t contain his angst.  He felt the heat rising on his skin and knew he was turning a bright red.  He felt like he had unexpectedly been caught in a devious plot---couldn’t run forward or backward---couldn’t do anything to get out of the plight thrust upon him.
“What’s the matter, Hank, you look like you just saw a ghost?”
“Ah, ahhh, nothing, sir.  Ah…I…ah, just never imagined I would be doing this kind of thing.  You caught me off guard.  All I ever wanted was to be a farmer.  I never in a million years thought I would be chasing criminals in Germany.  I don’t know the first thing about this kind of work.”
“You’ll do fine, Hank.  I saw how you befriended Max and that makes you uniquely prepared to meet with his sister; his twin sister no less.  You’re just looking for information.  Get to know her; gain her trust.  You are a good man, Hank, just be yourself.  At any rate, none of us chose to be where we are now, but we have to do what we have to do, and this is what our country wants us to do right now.  I know how much you love America, and I know you’ll get this job done for all of us.  Now, pull yourself together, man, and get to work.  Go see her right now.”
Hank silently chaffed at the sound of being called a “good man”, which he certainly wasn’t feeling at the moment.  He was trapped in his own plot, thinking, Why in the hell did I ever agree to meet with Oliver and Max.  Now look at the fix I’m in.  I should have let well enough alone and never seen them again.  Gain her trust?  What about Max’s trust?   Hank felt dirty and didn’t see his way out of his mess, so he did the only thing he could think to do in the moment.
“Ok, if that’s what you think I should do, then that’s what I’ll do.”
“Those are my orders, Corporal.”
“Yes, sir.”
The ride out to the Displaced Persons Camp, the DPC, wasn’t nearly as long as Hank would have liked.  He needed time to think, but within minutes, the Army Jeep pulled up in front of the impoundment surrounded by a tall wire fence with barbed wire strung along the top.  He showed his identification papers and they drove into the compound.  Max had a sick feeling in his stomach and his hope that something would happen to keep his meeting with Roberta from happening was fading fast.  He had no alternative but to see his job through.  He felt like he was losing his integrity---felt ashamed.
The detained SS Officers and those related to them were being held apart from the displaced persons, the officers in one row of former Army barracks and the women and children in separate barracks, divided by another wire fence.  His meeting with Roberta had been arranged in a small building nearby that was formerly used as an office for the commander of the former German Army facility.
The guard escorted Hank into the building where Roberta was waiting in a small interrogation room in the rear.
“I’ll lock the door behind you.  Knock when you are finished.”  The guard instructed as Max entered the room.
Roberta sat on a straight backed wooden chair at a small table in the center of the room. The late morning sun streaked through the barred window at the rear casting its golden glow across the floor and onto the black prison gown she wore, forming the image of the bars from the window.  It struck Hank as a very sad scene.  He saw Roberta as a victim caught up in an evil situation.  Hank was more excited than he even imagined he would be---his breathing elevated and everything around him seemed to disappear except the vision of Roberta seated with her head down, eyes fixed blankly on the table.  He was still uncertain how he would begin, and awkwardly pulled his chair out and sat down without speaking, quietly looking at her as she sat still with her head hanging down---sadly, he thought.  The sight of her and the sadness evoked a flow of empathy in him.  He decided to sit quietly without speaking and wait for her.
Roberta didn’t move.  Hank was struck by how small she was, much smaller than Max, but with the same dark brown hair, almost black.  Her skin was silky smooth and her hands were so tiny and looked so innocent.  Hank realized he hadn’t looked at a woman seriously, really looked at a woman since he left Wisconsin.  It had been four months.  He was enjoying their silence.
After what seemed to Hank a very long time, Roberta slowly raised her head, revealing the dampness of tears on her cheeks; she had been crying for a very long time.  Then she raised her sad silver-blue-green eyes to meet his.  He was startled at how beautiful she was and her look seemed to penetrate right through him as if she could see all the way to his heart.  He was momentarily mesmerized; the golden glow of the sun seemed to shimmer, and his heart beat faster---he had not expected this.  It took a few moments before he realized they had not spoken.  He felt awkward.
“Hello, my name is Hank.”
“Do you know who I am?” She quietly intoned just those few words, but they were music in his ears, like the wind blowing gently through the pines atop the bluffs at home.  They beckoned him, made him feel warm.
“Yes, Roberta.”
“Then you know why I am here?’
“Yes, I do.”
“Are you going to help me?”
“Well, I don’t know?”  Hank was taken aback.  He didn’t expect her to ask for his help, but deep inside he knew that’s what he wanted to do.   It was his natural instinct to help.  He had no idea what she had been told of his visit.  “What do you think I can help you with?”
“They broke into my home and took me away.  I have not done anything wrong.  I am innocent.  I had no idea what my father was doing in the SS.  I only know that he is a very generous and kind man who is fair and just.  Why have you imprisoned me?”  Roberta spoke pitifully from her broken heart.  It was obvious she was suffering greatly in her circumstances.  “Are you here to interrogate me too?  Like the others?  Do you want to force me to say things that are not true?  Should I tell you lies so you will leave me alone?  They told me my father is dead, that he killed himself that he didn’t really care about me.  How could they be so cruel?  Why?  Why?  Why?”  Roberta began sobbing uncontrollably, and Hank felt the full emotional burden of her pain, reacting how he would to any person in need; he reached his arm around her shoulders and comforted her.
“It’s OK.  It’s OK.  I understand.  Go ahead and cry.  I don’t mind.  There, there.”  Hank was drawn to her as if by a spiritual force, not a magical or religious experience, but a feeling he understood her and felt her pain intensely.
It was several minutes before Roberta could compose herself.  Hank withdrew his arm somewhat reluctantly.  She felt really good to him.
“No, Roberta, I am not here to interrogate you.  I’m not going to badger you, threaten you, or abuse you in any way.  I am very sorry about your father.  I’m sure he was a very good man and he loved you very much.  I need to get to know you better so I can understand how I can help you.  There is nothing I would like better than for you to be able to get out of here and go home.  This war has been miserable for all of us.”
“Home?  Home?  I have no home.  My home in Munich was given to the Nazi’s.  The British have taken my home here in Hamburg.  My mother is dead, now they tell me my father is dead, and my brother was taken prisoner by you Americans and I don’t know if he is alive or dead!  I have nothing, nothing, and no one!”
Hank was startled.  It was enough that Roberta began sobbing again, but he was surprised to learn she had not accepted that her father was dead, and she didn’t know about Max either.  Hank felt an incredible sadness for her, but he thought better of telling her that Max was alive and he knew where Max was, and that Max was looking for her.  These were things he could use at the right time to get Roberta to cooperate and maybe even to forge a friendship.  He would need time to decide how to proceed, and just when to tell her these things.  He needed to get out of there for the time being and come back prepared the next day.  At that moment his head and his heart were at odds with each other.  He needed time to get his emotions sorted out, and didn’t know for sure what he wanted for himself.  The words his father spoke to him the last night they were together rang in his ears… sometimes your special moments will grab you unexpectedly.  No matter how they come, you have to be ready.  Hank wondered if this was such a moment.  His heart seemed to be immersed in ecstasy, but his head was pulling him back---trying to discern the wisdom of his father’s words.  The moment and its illumination necessarily had to pass, but the conviction it etched in his heart would remain forever.
Hank knew Captain Stein would be anxious to hear how his meeting went, so he was prepared with a very positive report, telling the Captain that it went very well; he had established a great rapport and formed the beginning of a friendship that surely would yield good results.  It would just take more time.  He didn’t want to push too hard.  Stein thought that was great, just what he had thought would be the best approach himself.  He knew it would take a little time.
Sleep never really came for Hank that night.  Every time he dozed off he saw Roberta looking at him with those big beautiful eyes, hair flowing in the breeze and a smile on her lips that melted his heart.  He tossed and turned, dozed off again, and was awakened time and again by his vision of Roberta.  His visions were interrupted with his confusion about what or when to talk with Roberta about her father and Max—then, of course, there was Max, and Oliver, who were anxious to hear from him about Roberta the next evening.  Hank was in a mess.
Toward the early morning, he gave up trying to sleep.  He lay in his bunk wrestling his anxiety about how he would approach Roberta to get information that would satisfy Stein.  He was in a quandary over forces pulling him in opposing directions.  He didn’t believe Roberta was guilty of doing anything to support the Nazi’s and he didn’t think she knew anything about what her father was doing, but he was under pressure to come up with clues.  The opposing force was more compelling--- he thought he might be in love for the very first time.  Whatever he chose to do, he would follow his heart.
The first thing the next morning, he left for the prison camp, arriving early.  He asked for Roberta to be summoned and sat nervously at the table for what seemed a very long time.  His heart leaped when he heard footsteps on the wooden floor and rose to face the door, not sure if she would be happy to see him again, but hoping she would.  She stood just inside the door with her head tilted toward the floor until the guard closed the door behind her and slid the lock in place with a heavy clunk.
When she raised her head Hank captured the image he would remember all his life.  Roberta’s eyes sparkled in a way he had never seen eyes sparkle, the smile on her lips stretched wide, she lighted up the room like sunshine, and she vanquished any reservation that remained.  She really was happy to see him!  And, she was so beautiful.  He was in love.  He had the sensation of having no weight, all the concerns of his life evaporated, nothing else mattered.
His first impulse was to rush toward her, wrap her in his arms and caress her, but he hesitated, thinking it may not be what he hoped.  At that first movement, Roberta leaped forward into his arms.  He felt the brush of her hair and the exquisite softness of her cheek on his as her arms stretched up to squeeze his neck and he leaned to fold her into his arms.   The warmth of her body pressed firmly against him brought a surge of emotion he didn’t know could be so strong.  He longed to kiss her lips, but held her tightly, her head pressed against his neck and shoulder, and felt her body gently throbbing as her warm tears of joy wet his neck and cheek.  It had been so long since he felt such intimacy.
“Roberta, you feel the same way I do don’t you?
    “Oh, Hank, It has been so long since anyone cared how I feel; so long since I have felt anyone so sensitive, who cared about me.  I thought I would never feel this way about anyone!  I feel like we have known each other a very long time, well, since forever.”
“I feel the same way!”  Hank was giddy, as excited as a young high school boy at his first prom with the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.  Then he realized there was something he had to tell her that he must say right away.
“Roberta, I have good news for you?”
Roberta stood back and looked up at Hank with a look Hank understood.  She wanted good news, she was desperate for good news.  She couldn’t speak, her expression said, tell me…tell me, now!
     “Max is alive!”
Hank caught Roberta as her legs buckled under her, falling into his arms as she wept with joy.  Once again she was comforted in his arms.  Hank felt good.  He was able to make her happy.
She quickly composed herself.  “Where is he?”  Is he here, in Germany?  Has he been wounded?  Is he well?”
“Whoa, whoa, little one.  Yes, he is here in Hamburg and he is perfectly fine.  He was captured by our American troops in France and has been in a prison camp in America, but now he is here in Hamburg, safe and sound.”
“Here in Hamburg?!  When can I see him? Can he come here?”
“Those are good questions, but the answers are not easy.  Of course, he cannot come here to see you, or he would be arrested just like you.  And, of course, you cannot go to see him.  But I have an idea that may have to suffice as the best we can do for now.”
“What is it?  Tell me!”
“I will continue to meet with you as we have been meeting.  I can carry messages for both of you, but they will have to be verbal only.  I don’t want to risk anything written.  I know you want to see him and hold him, but we cannot do that now.  But, I have an idea.  I will arrange for Max to come near here at a distance and you can see each other across the field.  Look out that window.  You see there is a woods there?  I will have Max come to the woods so you can see him and he can see you.  I know it isn’t what you would like, but for now it may be the best I can do.”
“Anything, anything.  I’m so happy to know he is alive.  Thank you, thank you, my darling!”
Her words startled him.  My darling, he pondered the thought.  He had never heard those words from anyone but his mother.  They felt good, really good, and he was delighted to see her happy.

Unraveled by Jen Frederick (spotlight, short excerpt, GIVEAWAY), updated

Hmm, I am not the only one with timing issues lately.  Here is a guest post from the author of Unraveled

 Grand Gestures

Jen Frederick, Guest Post

Many romance books feature a grand gesture. Often it is from the hero who engages in some activity to show the heroine how much he loves her and how very sorry he is for everything he’s done wrong. In some stories the grand gesture involves some kind of public display such as in The Girl’s Guide to (Man)hunting by Jessica Clare. To convince the heroine that he loves her and that she should believe in his verbal promises, former NHL star Dane Croft reveals himself to the citizens of Bluebonnet in a way that they hadn’t seen him before.

But not every grand gesture is a public one. In
Unraveled, Marine Sgt. Gray Phillips tries to get closer to Sam by taking up one of her hobbies, one that isn’t normally associated with males.  The grand gesture is always about the character going outside his or her comfort zone in an effort to show their chosen mate that they’ll do anything to win him or her back whether it’s jumping into a lake or quitting a job or moving across the world.

The idea is to create some type of sacrifice that both atones for a past wrongdoing but also proves to the doubting party that the person making the gesture is worth loving. Sometimes the grand gesture can be tragic.  In Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma, in which a brother and sister develop an immoral and illegal relationship, one character makes a huge sacrifice. Whether it was the correct grand gesture is probably up to the reader.

Movies are full of the grand gesture. In Say Anything the grand gesture is John Cusack’s character standing outside in the rain holding up a boom box playing “their song.” In Love Actually,
several story lines include a grand gesture such as when Mark holds up the signs expressing the love he has for Juliet, his best friend’s new wife, and the way that young Sam runs after the Joanna in the airport.  There’s the big speech that Jerry Maguire makes to Dorothy where she utters the famous line “You had me at hello.”

Grand gestures invoke big moments but some of my favorite stories feature characters who don’t engage in the grand gesture and whose love is steady and present throughout the book. There’s something heartwarming and wonderful about both types of stories. And I’m glad that the romance genre encompasses the entire spectrum from the steady quiet love to the loud boisterous ones.

Twenty-two year old Samantha Anderson lost her husband to an IED in Afghanistan just two months after their vows. Two years later, Sam is full of regrets—that she didn’t move with her husband to Alaska; that she allowed her friends to drift away; that she hasn’t taken many chances in life. But how can she risk her heart on another military man who could share the same tragic fate as her husband?

Excerpt

THIS WAS ONLY TEMPORARY, I reminded myself, as Samantha so sweetly kissed me back. I'm only here for a short time I reminded myself but as I felt her tongue stroke the side of my tongue, as she nipped her teeth against my lip, I wanted to just drown in the sensation. Her scent filled my head and the air around us shrank until all I knew was her small body sitting so close to mine. I moved my hand from her shoulder to cup her neck and angled her face for deeper penetration. I licked every inch inside of her mouth until the taste of her was all that I knew on my tongue.

And all that time I stared in to her green eyes and not once did she look like she was anywhere but right here with me. I saw my reflection there. Her heartbeat was made wild by my kisses.
And temporary was the farthest thing from my mind.

Dragon's Fool by Aldred Chase (VNBtM, Excerpt, GIVEAWAY) GFT

It is my pleasure to have a guest post from the author of Dragon's Fool, Aldred Chase and to be able to share information about his book with you!

Outrunning My Inner-Critic

by Aldred Chase

I picture my imagination as a sandy beach. Every morning, when I write, I’m taking time to visit the beach and build a sandcastle. Most days it doesn’t matter that the tide will come in and wash the castle away, because my pleasure was in building it, but on some days an angry boy watches over my shoulder as I work, and when I’ve finished he jumps up and down on the sandcastle, demolishing it. The angry boy is my inner-critic, speaking spiteful words about what rubbish my writing is.

I first had an insight into how powerful and destructive my inner-critic was when I attended a creative writing class where the teacher gave us a series of timed writing exercises where the only two rules were keep your pen moving and don’t judge the quality of what you write. The fact we all had pens to keep moving rather than laptops or tablets does date the class but not the message. I was astounded by how much more creative I was when I suspended my judgment and forced myself to keep writing. It wasn’t just me; everyone in the class made the same discovery.

Since that lesson, I’ve integrated this approach into my writing. The first draft of every scene in the Nobody’s Fool Quartet was written keeping my fingers dancing across the keyboard and making no attempt to judge what I’d written. I’d do a brief outline of the scene in advance, write the scene in one go without stopping, and then leave it to compost on my computer until I had completed the whole first draft of the book, and it was time to edit. My inner-critic talked about the work festering rather than composting but I ignored it.

I’ve used these simple rules on other occasions that have had nothing to do with writing. Sometimes, I’ve felt overwhelmed when I’ve been faced with a crisis or a difficult decision. I’ve found one of the best ways to get a grip on the situation is to sit down with a blank piece of paper and write about it, keeping my pen moving and not judging a single word I put down. This act of writing calms me down and helps me see the issues involved with far greater clarity.

My inner-critic is a tough beast and it does sometimes succeed in interrupting me. When that happens, rather than beat myself up, I remind myself of the simple pleasure that I receive from writing. I love splurging words on paper; it’s joyful and exhilarating. In a noisy world, the page is a quiet place where I can express myself and no one will interrupt me. Best of all, I find writing things down helps me think more clearly and I feel less muddled; this applies both to my fiction and real-life.

Dragon's Fool, Book Four of the Nobody's Fool Quartet
by Aldred Chase

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Keth has become the most powerful person in the city of Russett. He is both Prince Dawyn's fool and his most trusted adviser. The secret of Keth's success is listening to the tart, sour comments that the turnip on the end of his fool's stick pours into his mind, which no one else can hear.
When an earthquake strikes Russett, it is only the first in a series of disasters to devastate the city. Superstitious folk say that these are signs that a dragon is coming and only the golden prince of legend can save them. Keth's turnip tells him that these are only natural events and dragons don't exist, but he can use peoples' fears to his own advantage.
In the ruined city, Keth has to decide who he will trust and what he will believe. The fate of his friends and the survival of the land depend on the choices he makes.
Dragon's Fool is book four in the Nobody's Fool Quartet, the gripping climax to a tale of comedy and adventure.
*****************************
Excerpt:
“Dragons and the princes who fight them are only in stories, aren’t they, fool?” Dawyn said. His fingers were gouging at the blankets.
“That’s right, Your Highness,” I said, sitting on the bed beside him. “They’re just legends.”
“Like that ‘Golden Prince’ play,” Dawyn said.
“Exactly,” I said. “We don’t have any real dragons, only actors holding up a costume on sticks.”
Dawyn sighed and his fingers relaxed.
“Are we expecting Dawyn to fight a dragon?” I thought at Turnip.
“Of course not,” Turnip said inside my head then chuckled. “You must reassure our noble prince that no acts of courage or heroism will be required from him.”
“Captain Wheelbrace spoke of a dragon,” I thought at it.
“And so will his crew,” Turnip said, “and so will his passengers, and with every telling the dragon will grow bigger and its fire will burn hotter.”
“I don’t believe they’re all making it up,” I thought at it.
“They’re not,” Turnip said. “They saw something they did not understand, so someone called it a dragon. That made sense to everyone else, and they repeated it.”
“So what did they see?” I thought at it.
“A special type of mountain called a volcano has erupted,” Turnip said, “and when that happens, huge fiery lumps of molten rock are hurled high into the air. It’s far more awesome than a paltry dragon dragged from a legend, but a dragon is the best description these people can come up with.”
“So what do we do?” I thought at it.
“Relax and become heroes,” Turnip said.
Excerpt
“Hey,” she said quietly.
The memory of that kiss made him crave another taste of her. He’d thought she was fire and passion and so damned determined before. Now he knew that quiet energy she directed toward work was merely a hint of the passion concealed beneath that cool exterior.
It was a passion he wanted to feel beneath his fingertips. That he wanted to slide against.
“Hey.” He swallowed, about to cross a line from professional to… something else.
And damned if he wasn’t afraid to cross that line. That kiss earlier was nothing compared to what she’d just given him.
She’d lied for him today. Ben had been about to make something up that would get his battalion commander off his back and Olivia had stepped in with a smooth story that had deflected Gilliad’s attention with no one the wiser.
She’d agreed not to tell the boss. He hadn’t expected her to all-out lie for him. And now that she had? He didn’t quite know how to broach the subject with her. Not at all.
She straightened and leaned against her desk. The broken scale tray swayed as she bumped it with her hip. He grasped at it for a distraction from his racing thoughts. “You know one of these is broken?”
She nodded. “It’s supposed to be.”
He studied her quietly. “What like broken justice?
Ben paused, studying the soft bun at the nape of her neck. Her skin was exposed. Her neck was long and lean. He had the sudden image in his head of dragging his tongue down that tender flesh. Would she gasp? Would she tip her head and grant him access to more of her secret places?
He cleared his throat roughly. “You lied for me today.”
She stilled, guilt flashing over her face. “Yeah, about that…”
“Thank you,” he said quickly.
She lifted one brow. “For lying?”
“For giving me the benefit of the doubt. That doesn’t happen very often,” he said quietly.
“Really? But you’re such a charmer.”
Ben shifted until he stood a little too close. Until he could see her eyes darken the way they had in the car when he’d given in to the temptation to kiss her. “Are you teasing me? Because if you are, I think I need to make a note on my calendar that yes, you do officially have a sense of humor.”
A smile crossed her lips. It took everything he had not to slide his thumb over that soft skin. He wanted to see her lips close over the tip. To feel her warm mouth encircle him and… Jesus, he still had to go back to work.
“I do have a sense of humor. I just don’t get to break it out very often because the only thing I see at work is the seedy underbelly of the army. There’s not much humor in what I do.”
“Maybe you need to relax a little more.” Ben shifted until he could nudge the door shut behind him. He didn’t want anyone to see. Didn’t want to give anyone a hint of something that was private and intimate and deeply compelling. Were they flirting? This felt like flirting. And with this woman, he had absolutely no basis to say either way what this really was.
“I don’t know what this ‘relax’ is that you speak of,” she said.
He felt a long-forgotten twinge deep in his belly. It was something so foreign, he’d forgotten it was something he was capable of. In all his casual encounters, he’d forgotten what real attraction felt like.
He swallowed the dryness in his mouth. He didn’t know what to do with this realization that Olivia Hale was someone he wanted to… someone he wanted. It was one thing to flirt with someone at a bar, to take them home for a few hours of mindless sex.
This? This was something entirely different.
Something more than wanting a few hours of sheets sliding over skin, of warm bodies slipping together. This was something darker.
Something warmer.
Something infinitely more valuable.
“Maybe I’ll ply you with alcohol tonight at Stable Call. We’ll see if we can’t get you to unwind a little bit.” His voice was low, grating on his ears.
“Good luck with that. I only drink socially. There will be no drunken pictures of me immortalized on the Internet.” She stepped toward him then, closing the last distance between them. She reached up and slid her hand over his cheek. Ben went very still as her palm slid over his skin. Her palm was cool against his face. Gentle. It took everything he had to let her slip out of reach again.
He captured her palm before she could slip away. Held it there against his cheek. “Thank you,” he whispered. “For Zittoro.”
Her lips parted. He could feel the slight huff of breath on his skin.
“Thank you for trusting me with the truth.” She slipped her fingers from his, her eyes sparkling. “Just don’t make me come after you for that packet.”
Ben caught her hand before he thought about it. His hand closed over hers, her index finger captured in a gentle loop between his thumb and forefinger.
He had the sudden wild idea to put her finger to his lips. He pressed it gently to his mouth. Felt the pad of her finger on his bottom lip.
A single bolt of electricity snapped over his skin.
A simple touch. Nothing more.
They were at work. It was the single stupidest thing he could have done.
He released her quickly, before anyone could see. Before he could do something stupid like pull her close and kiss her again. The want inside him was powerful. Raw and needy.
My Review
4 out of 5 stars
It's Always Been You by Jessica Scott is part of the military romance ‘Coming Home’ series and features Ben Teague who has been thrust into the unwelcome role of command during the attempt to ‘clean house’.  He must deal with both the pressures of the job and the complication of making unwelcome decisions about men he has shared life-threatening experiences with.  Major Olivia Hale has been tasked with making sure that the legal requirements and appropriate paperwork are completed, no matter what resistance.  It takes some patience and compassion for her to realize that her own past history and individual biases must be overcome and that sometimes what is protocol is not necessarily what is humane but the challenge is knowing when and how to apply the rules.
The allure of this series is the gritty realism that is balanced by the hope that a change can be made for the brave soldiers who are sacrificing so much.  Each book is eye-opening as it reveals the challenges that are faced both on and off of the battlefield and the repercussions of decisions that are made for the masses yet impact on very distinct individuals.  The heartbreaking aftereffects of military action and the long-lasting impact on soldiers and their families is again emphasized and adds to the poignancy of a story that allows the reader to learn about some of the harsh reality facing those who develop addictions or suffer from traumatic brain injuries or PTSD that go untreated.  The gradual blossoming of the relationship between Ben and Olivia who each have their own past traumas to overcome is wonderful to watch and it is great to get a glimpse of Reza and Emily as well.  I love the camaraderie that is displayed even as I mourn the challenges that all of these individuals must overcome and applaud their perseverance and loyalty to each other and those they are responsible for.  It is wonderful the way the stories in this series integrate and I am always anxious for more of them and hope that we get to see many more tales of these charismatic individuals.
Hero Worship by Kimberly Quinton (guest post, excerpt and GIVEAWAY)
I have the pleasure of hosting Kimberly Quinton today.  She is sharing her thoughts as well as an excerpt of her new release Hero Worship
Here's Kimberly...
What makes you so special?
by Kimberly Quinton
First let me say Hi! Thanks for hosting me today! Briefly, my love of romance started early and has been my number one love in reading since I was fourteen. Before that, I read everything paranormal I could get my hands on. And that meant a lot of horror thrillers like Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Between the books, television and movies my imagination stayed on overdrive and colored every memory I made growing up, so much so that I remember more about what wasn’t real than what was.
I’ve had a consistent fantasy most of my life—from elementary school and wanting to be invisible to reading little-known paranormal teen novels that I stumbled upon in the forgotten section of the library (this was way before YA became a thing.) through King, Koontz to Brooks and into romance—I want a superpower. I dreamt of it often, made up elaborate fantasies about being psychic or being able to astral project, about finding a twin that activated a special power and then about finding a boyfriend with powers. As you can see by the excerpt from Hero Worship, I haven’t outgrown the fantasy but now I write them down and try to turn them into a book.
Stick me in the paranormal/sci-fi section of a bookstore and I am a happy camper for hours and will leave with an armload and an empty wallet. I’ve discovered what it is about this type of fiction that appeals to me so much—the mystery of it all. Whether in a romance, a sci-fi or fantasy epic, urban fantasy, or horror; A good story makes you think you have the usual characters figured out, but then you find out they have this one thing that makes them special or unique and they will never be ordinary in your view again. Instant character fascination and I want to know more and see what the character does with his or her gift.
What draws you to paranormal or science fiction stories?
Enjoy the following excerpt for Hero Worship:
“Look, princess, I don’t have a knight-in-shining-armor side. You need to get around to my real side.”
Caroline’s teeth clicked together at princess; her tongue barely escaped the sharp edges before she forced another breath through her nose.
“And what side would that be? Your, I-want-my-own-island-and-the-rest-of- the-world-can-rot, side? Or how about your, I-need-a-new-woman-every-couple- weeks, side? Which one of those should I appeal to?”
Her voice sounded strange to her ears, thick with frustration and on the brink of screeching. I never raise my voice. Pursing her lips against the tremble, she gripped the edge of her seat, doing her best to ignore his wide smirk. She needed this conversation under her control.
He leaned back and tilted his head to look beneath the table, eyeing her legs. She stiffened but didn’t move further at his perusal of her from head to chest and back. A negotiator couldn’t be easily offended.
“Definitely my I-need-a-new-woman-every-couple-weeks, side. You could be that woman.”
“What?” Incredulity tightened her throat and her words sputtered out in a breathy puff. “Are you insane?”
“Depends on who you ask.” He winked; a suggestive tilt broadened his smile.
No way in hell. She squashed the butterflies that flapped in her belly, determined to ignore the temptation of his sun-kissed shoulders and golden abs, each muscle defined like a sculpted masterpiece. A perfect Hero. Physically. Too bad, of all the Heroes, only he remained.
Caroline cleared her throat. “I’m here to negotiate your chance at freedom, not feed your lascivious appetites.”
“Okay. Tell the AG the offer is rejected.”
“Millions of lives are at risk. We can’t combat a cyborg army under the control of a terrorist on our own.”
“Not my problem.”
“You used to be a hero. Now you’re heartless and cruel—pathetic.”
 Caroline searched his face for a reaction, anything to tell her she’d gotten to him. He gave nothing but a shrug under a steady gaze. Her insults seemed to roll right off him.
“Your brethren would be ashamed.”
A flash of violence passed through his eyes as he thrust forward, shoulders raised, in a shift from nonchalant to coiled aggression, ready to strike at the next provocation. Here was the vengeance that cost a dozen citizens their lives and damages in the billions to government assets. She struggled not to react, but anger surged inside her, smothering her self-protective instincts.
Prejudice Meets Pride (spotlight, GIVEAWAY)
Prejudice Meets
Pride
Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson
After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome new neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.
Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.
